My 2nd time in Red Holic in a million years. You can hardly find Korean street food places in northern Virginia, to be honest. Myungga has more like a restaurant vibe, not a bunsik place. Although Red Holic has a lot more menu options which include other than Korean street foods, they have a legitimate street food kinds all available such as tteokboki, soondae, tempura, mandu, kimbob, and ramen. I went there with a friend of mine to bring back the nostalgic memoir of Korea. We ordered Holic Sampler which has "a little bit of everything" I would go there again! Definitely a unique Korean street food experience for foodies who might be curious what Korean people can easily find on the street. Came in on a Thursday evening and got seated immediately because it was completely empty. Our server was extremely friendly, quick, and let us have our breathing room, but was also attentive at the same time - a hard to come by quality in a server. She almost made my review into a 5-star alone. I ordered the Holic Sampler as well as the Katsu. The Holic Sampler was good but it didn't blow me away, there wasn't much to it. Just a whole bunch of fried veggies, fried dumplings, ddukbokki, blood sausages, and kimbap. It would feed around two people but leave you feeling a bit unsatisfied. I think the katsu itself was good but the sauce on top made the skin soggy towards the latter half of the meal, so I would recommend getting it on the side. It came with rice and Korean-styled potato salad to complement the protein. (Sorry, forgot the pictures for the katsu) The location and inner design of the store made me feel like I was in a hole-in-the-wall type of restaurant which gave it that authentic Korean feel. Red Holic is a decent Korean restaurant. I asked for a recommendation from the guy working at the counter mid-afternoon. He recommended a plate (don't remember the Korean name) of breaded pork, which was good. This particular platter reminded me of the same type of dish I get going through Japanese airports. This restaurant has been in my mind for long time. My last visit was about 7 to 8 years ago, and their food and service were impressive. Now, they have more restaurants to compete with and they haven't really updated their interior (to me, it still looks good though). I was excited to revisit this restaurant. First, let me just say I care about the taste of food more than anything. Of course, you don't want a server who is extremely rude or mean, but at authentic places like this, i don't expect a smiling server who fills your water constantly and checks up on you. And that's because the way they get paid is generally not by your table's tips. (FWIW, my expectation for service is generally low unless it is a Michelin star restaurant.) My advice is that if you want a nice service, you should go to more high-end, probably less authentic ethnic restaurants. They will overcharge you but service is likely better, food may be more catered toward "American" taste. I've been to this place many times to satisfy my craving. I can make most of these dishes at home so I don't go as often but it hits the spot when I miss the taste of Korean street food. read more

Love the new "boon-shick" (aka - Korean diner) place. It specializes in offering Korean comfort foods. Be sure to come with a Korean friend so you know what you're really ordering. We ordered several dishes all of which were pretty good. Ddukboki + Kimbap Set #4 - good. Added noodles and upgraded to Tuna. Tuna was delicious!!! Tempura Set - really good taste and good value. Lots of different fried fritters and my favorite...kim-mari. Good for dipping or mixing with ddukboki sauce. Mandu dumplings (Friday menu item) - good. Also mixes well with sauce. Regular Kimbap - good. As a starter, the soup broth which is traditionally served with this kind of food was good and the sweet potato chips/fries were a nice touch. To be fair I don't go out to eat often because I work opposite shifts of all my friends and when I crave stuff like this none of my friends are available to go with but I order to go from here OFTEN and it is by far my favorite ddeokbokki in the area. I have other kimbap places I prefer in Fairfax but the Deokbokki is always the perfect balance, not overly sweet the sauce isn't overly thick and the rice cakes are also my favorite kind. I cannot speak to the service and of course to go isn't an ideal way to consume fried foods so I haven't tried a lot of the menu but I have enjoyed everything I have had from there thus far. read more

Having Korean street food is actually a pleasant surprise out of the monotony of Korean BBQ and fried chicken in annandale. The options are great, and the variety platters are awesome for sharing and trying out new dishes. Food is solid, and all their dishes are really tasty. My friend suggested we try this place for dinner! Inside had a very cozy and homey feel to it, with the benches and decor. We ordered the spicy rice cakes, kimbap (bulgogi & spicy squid), fried dumplings, and Korean fried chicken. The spicy rice cakes were delicious! Mind you the rice cake itself tastes like nothing but the spicy sauce was delicious! It also had fish cakes, cabbage, and an egg that went well together. The kimbap (both) were ok, nothing amazing. The dumplings were a little bland and quite oily-- suffice it to say, its dipping sauce was utilized throughout the meal. When the Korean fried chicken came out, the inside looked a bit pink so they fried it again and it tasted AMAZING. Been here a few times. Nothing too special or memorable about the food or environment. Came here recently to use a friend's groupon. Food: Mandoo- you can get good fried mandoo (dumplings) anywhere. Soondae- most disappointing. I've never tasted soondae of their kind... interesting and hard to describe, not in a good way. It made me wonder what they put in it and that's not a thought you want to have while eating pig intestine stuffed blood sausage. Ddukbokki- just o-kay. I like Myunga's better, but theirs has a lot of sugar in it too. Chicken- good. One of the only things worth coming here for. Kimbob- just o-kay. How anyone can make kimbob just okay tasting is beyond me.. it's usually a no fail home run. My favorite part of the platter was the fried vegetables. That's saying a lot because it's not really one of the main dishes. I really want to like this place- boonshik (korean) food is some of my favorite korean food- like mandoo, kimbob, etc. But everything is just o-k. I love this place for three main reasons. 1.) the food is super cheap. They have half off chicken during one day of the week! 2.) their platters full of different Korean street foods. The platter is massive! And when I say massive I mean big enough for four people to share as not only an appetizer, but a meal. These platters are about 25$ or maybe a little bit more. My best friend took me here for my first time a few years ago to order their soondae platter. It was more than enough for two people and was a good deal I thought. Fast forward to more recently, my uncle's family likes the fried chicken here so we joined them on two occasions. Both times, our service was really lacking. I'm not sure if it's because we're not Korean (not to be racist) but it seemed like every other party in the restaurant had more attentive service. We had to keep reminding them of the extra items we ordered or to ask for more water refills. The restaurant space also isn't that big either so I don't understand how we always get overlooked. Red Holic is one of the few places that serve up a few korean street food items in Annandale, which I find surprising. I've come here a few times and really enjoy their Fried . I've had a few other dishes like their topokki () that I'm not a huge fan of, however most of their food I really enjoy. It's a smaller restaurant on the basement floor if you're looking for it. Came here with a Groupon for a dinner for two and got 1/2 soy sauce and 1/2 sweet and spicy chicken. The crust was good, but I found it to be inconsistent in some spots. The parts that didn't get coated in the battery became dry/hard in the deep frier. Between the two, I liked the soy sauce chicken better, it had a good balance of salty/sweet. We also ordered the ramen (for only $6), but it really tasted exactly like the Neoguri or Shin ramen from the package. I was expecting legit ramen, but I should have known from that price. I know that this place gets mixed reviews, but I appreciate that I can get decent Korean junk food (Bun-Shik) in Annandale. In my honest opinion, you had to grow up in Korea to appreciate the flavors that Red Holic delivers. I am talking about really cheap street food that you buy from street vendors in front of schools and theaters that you grew up with. When I was in middle school in Korea, I could buy a small plate of ddukboki for about $1. My friends and I would eat cheap fried veggies/kimbap/soondae (Korean blood sausage) dipped in spicy ddukboki sauce. SO cheap, yet so satisfying. For me, eating at Red Holic is like tasting a bit of my childhood again in Annandale, but I understand why so many people dislike this place. Jason C and I always get the Han-Pan, or the famous spinning platter, which comes with the glorious combo of Kimbap, soondae, fried japchae roll, fried veggies, fried flat dumplings, etc. I LOVE EATING ALL THIS JUNK FOOD AT THE SAME TIME and the platter is so large that it can feed 3 people. We've tried their donkatsu, and again, this is Korean style donkatsu. If you want more authentic style, I would suggest miso instead. The donkatsu sauce here is Korean style gooey sweet more gravy style sauce on top of larger more flat piece of meat. If you grew up eating this in Korea, you will love it. Here's what we ordered: -Sample Platter: A little bit of everything you crave when you want Korean food (that's not BBQ)! -Donkatsu: Nice and crispy pork cutlets. Sauce was meh. -Sweet and Spicy Chicken Wings: Similar to Bonchon but not as spicy. -Seafood pancakes: I'm a big fan of octopuses (tentacles and everything) so I was definitely pleased to see them in the pancakes! This place is by no means gourmet, but that doesn't mean it's food isn't something that should be praised and recommended. Let me say that first, but I think one should come here if they're looking for some simple, well done, and tasty shareable Korean dishes like tteokbokki. Most of the dishes are shareables so its definitely a place to come with people, you'll definitely get a group family kind of vibe being here, the decor and service all play towards it. With that out of the way, the staff and owner are very friendly, in a way I feel like they were welcoming their guests to dine in their home more than they were their restaurant. I decided to go back with a purchase of Groupon It says you pay $16 for $27 worth of chicken for two and is a 43% discount but it turns out the chickens you get to order is $20 at most , so you save like 4,3 at most I think it's such a cute place to get Korean street type food. If you're a fan of kimbap and twice fried chicken, Red Holic is the place to be. Red Holic is a small, cozy restaurant that does Korean well and for cheap. I came here with my bf and we got kimbap, wings and dumplings. The kimbap was delicious and was served fairly quickly-- I got the Spam kimbap, yum. The wings were crispy but a comparison to Bon Chon isn't quite fair. Does Red Holic have tasty wings? Absolutely. Is it on par with garlic soy glazed Bon Chon wings? Not even close. But in its own right, they were delicious. Dumplings were, well, dumplings. The service is quick and friendly- there were only two people working the floor and despite having nearly every table full, they were so super quick and attentive. The only weird thing is, is that their free coffee machine says out of order yet I saw one of our servers snagging a cup of coffee for himself. 3.5-4/5 stars Red Holic is a great place to binge on Korean junk food on a serious budget. I mean seriously, where else can you get a rotating platter full of tempura, dddukboki, soondae, and kimbap (enough for about 3-4 ppl) for less than $20?! I've had Red Holic numerous times, more often during my pre-Yelp days, and the food is usually pretty good, if not better than other Korean restaurants in the area that serve snack foods. I can't say that I found a specific dish to be particularly omgsuperamazing, but Redholic gets the job done. Their ddukboki (the original kind) is better than almost all the ddukboki I have had in the DMV area and tastes closest to the ddukboki I have had in Korea. Redholic's ddukboki is definitely tamer and less spicy than the OG Korean kind, but I've been disappointed by ddukboki more times than I care to count in the States, so I know good spicy rice cake when I taste it. Red Holic also serves tonkatsu, fried chicken, noodles of all kinds (jjol myun, udon, ramen), and like 6 variations of ddukboki. Ah, and they serve pretty good fried chicken too. Definitely underrated and overshadowed by more popular places, like Bonchon, if you ask me. If you order the chicken, it'll take a good 20-25 minutes to come out of the kitchen as it is made to order. I have had both the sweet/spicy chicken as well as their regular fried chicken. Both are solid choices (crispy on the outside, moist on the inside) and they give you these little finger gloves to eat your chicken with, so you don't have to worry about greezy hands. Convenient! Bottomline - Redholic probably has the best Korean snack food in the DMV. The food quality surpasses that of Myung Ga (another well-known Korean snack establishment). Good, basic street food at decent prices, and with a decor I wouldn't have come up with myself, but was inexplicably cheer-inducing. This would be a great place to bring a group of people for a fairly cheap introduction to Korean street food, particularly thanks to the combo platters for anywhere from 2-6+ people. This isn't a restaurant you are going to see from the road; you have to know it is there. Once you step down into Red Holic you'll be immersed in red; it's a bit funky, but in a fun way. Service at Korean places in Annandale seems to be unpredictable, but we didn't have any issues; our server was perfectly friendly and cheerful. The food here is, as others have noted, Korean street food so it is nothing fancy, but hearty and delicious. The ddukboki was decent, and the noodles were already in bite sized pieces unlike the usual presentation of 4-5 inch long massive noodles. The mandoo were also good; they were deep fried rather than pan fried, which gives them a slightly lighter feeling than a dan-fried potsticker. We also got an order of the korean-style fried chicken drizzled with soy/teriyaki sauce, which was delicious. Overall the food was all good and with pretty cheap prices and huge portions. Came here with friends to try their Korean street foods. I got the dukbokki, and my friends got the same, some got combos with kimbap. Their food is pretty standard, I don't think my dukbokki was spicy enough and the rice cakes were a bit too hard, but maybe that's just my personal preference (I like reaaaaaaaaally spicy and soft rice cakes). I also think they could have put more fish cakes in. My friends' gimbap was tasty, but I feel like you could get the same thing for cheaper at H-mart or something and it would taste the same. It's been a couple of years since I have last visited Red Holic. At that point they were a new establishment and the food was short from memorable. Fast forward to 2015; they have a taken a huge step in the right direction and I will be visiting more often if I am craving some snack food. This isn't the place to visit if you are looking for galbi, jiggae, etc. you get my drift. Between 3 other people we ordered the mayak kimbap, dduboki, fried dumplings and fried chicken (regular and spicy). I will start with my favorite-- the kimbap was delicious and coming in at a close second was the regular fried chicken. Typically I don't like Korean style fried chicken but the version they serve here at Red Holic is excellent. The chicken was very juicy. On that note, the spicy fried chicken was more on the wet side so I wasn't a huge fan of this. I eat about just everything but ddukboki is something I don't really like. So I won't comment on that dish personally, however everyone else at the table seemed to enjoy this dish very much. Don't expect good service here-- the waitresses will take your order and bring out the food. You won't see them again until you request your check. Luckily there is a water machine you can refill your own water located near the coffee machine. With that in mind if you are looking for a quick bite this is a great place to visit. read more
