I've been to Ray's Boathouse so many time in the past - it was my favorite restaurant in Seattle. I had there the best salmon of my life! Last month, I finally got a table after they have completed the remodel. They have a new chef and a new menu: prices went up, quality went drastically down. I ordered a salmon and it was good - nothing special. It was actually overcooked and when I pointed this out to the waitress, I was expecting picking up the dish and bring a new one. It didn't happen... Besides, I really don't like the new layout with this big bar in the middle. It completely ruins the atmosphere. We booked reservations through Open Table for a sunny Saturday evening. We were quickly seated upon arrival and were surprised to see how busy the restaurant was. After being seated we waited 5 minutes before our waitress took our drinks. The drinks came 15 minutes later and my bottled Corona was mildly warm, making the taste undrinkable. The bread and butter had also arrived right before our drinks did, and even then the bread was hard and cold. I ate half of a slice while my wife ate the other. Shortly after our drinks were brought out, our Calamari Ceviche appetizer arrived and we found it very tasteless and were surprised that we were starting to have a bad experience here. 20 minutes later our food arrived and we split a Salmon Burger with fries, which were too greasy. The burger was ok but the only thing great about our meal was the lemon aoli sauce. I also made a trip to the men's restroom and had found children's boogers smeared all over the wall. It was really disgusting. As I seated myself at the table I told my wife what I had found and we both decided we weren't coming back. We were so upset and disappointed that our experience had not been the same since the last few times we had visited. We're not sure if the amount of people that were there had hindered the taste and quality of the food because of the demand or if Ray's was starting to go off our favorites list. We've had better experiences before and are really disappointed that this was a let down especially since we had out of town company join us. I emailed the restaurant about our experience and, surprisingly, haven't heard back from them. Unless something changes with the restaurant, we probably won't be back. read more

We had lunch here yesterday. Food was overpriced, which I don't mind if it is really good. This was very disappointing. Cesar salad had no taste at all, the calamari was over breaded and overcooked . An order of spot prawns had not been deveined and had to be sent back. Our oysters were tiny- paid $22 for 6 of them- really? We have eaten at Ray's for years and have always been pleased- a "go to" where you know it will be good. No so anymore. read more

Just had an absolutely spectacular dinner at Ray's with two friends who had just got married earlier this evening plus some family members. This was one of those visits to Ray's where everything was pure gold. Where to begin...our server's name was Livia and I am not exaggerating: she is the best server I have had in I don't know how long. She knows the menu backward and forward, and not just the "science" of the menu but also the "art" of it, if you know what I mean--why certain things are prepared and paired the way they are, and she could describe dishes in ways that showed deep understanding of and appreciation for them. She also had that special presence where a server is a calm, warm, confident and skilled professional, whom you are actually happy to see come by the table. The food was stellar, cooked and presented wonderfully. I got the marvelous sablefish sake kasu, terrific as always, and others got different salmon or halibut dishes, all excellent. My girlfriend and I shared a pistachio creme brûlée afterward that was really delicious (and good to share--it was immense!). I really loved the way they took care of my newlywed friends, too, with complimentary champagne and a specially presented flourless chocolate cake with berries and "congratulations" written in ganache. *5 Star views and 1 Star food for sure, I ordered the black cod and the description was Cucumber Kim Chee and Jasmine Rice, what came back was raw chopped cabbage and some cucumbers, no dressing whatsoever, just awful and the rice was horribly overcooked and stuck together in a big clump, almost tasted day old and reheated *For 500 bucks for 3 couples I couldn't have been more disappointed, the service was decent, view magnificent but the food, even the apps was meh, the mussels were bland and the cheese plate came our with 4 cheeses unceremoniously lumped on top of each other with these spaghetti house skinny bread sticks, just weird *Here's the bottom line, if you are charging 30+ per entree AT LEAST make the side dishes tasty, it's the easiest part, the fish was cooked perfectly! read more

Prepare yourselves for an exceptionally gushing, glowing, hyperbolic-overload of a review, for I have never, never, never worked with an events team as organized, down-to-Earth, compassionate and relaxed team as the team at Ray's Catering... and it starts. (For the easily digestible CliffsNotes version, find the * at the bottom.) In Summer 2009, the "high school reunion committee" which consisted of me, myself and I went on a mission to find a venue to hold our 10-year high school reunion. (Side note: I made great choices in High School. This was *not* one of them.) The only problem is that myself and all of my alter-egos live in London and have not live in Seattle for, well, 10 years. Enter Amy Stevens at Ray's catering. She instantly put me at ease with a simple and low-pressure plan of action: I go back to London and she will handle everything. Amy worked with my annoyingly limited budget, my strange hours, my requests to know less rather than more, and came back to me with a menu, a room set up and an assurance that all would be a-ok. We were on the phone the day-of bumping menu items, adding drink tickets, and discussing the effect Facebook has had on reunion attendance, so to say Amy was accommodating and easily accessible is a vast understatement. It sounds a bit odd, but I'm actually going to miss holding our "committee" meetings via phone and email. She was *that* great. The night-of was flawless. So much so that I showed up 15 minutes before the event and everything was done and dusted -- all I needed to do was plug in my iPod's 90s playlist and grab a glass of wine. The entire night-of staff, from the chefs to the bartender to the servers busted their butts for the entire 4-hours and I'm sure both long before and after. There was never a dirty plate or an empty platter, the drinks were stiff and the food was incredible. Adam our captain had everything under control from the timing of food to the cut off of booze, he kept me updated on drunk-levels and how quickly food was disappearing. At the end of the evening, he not only boxed up the left-overs for our family picnic the next day, but printed out maps to the after party that I could then hand out to guests. Basically, this guy made me look good all night. *All in all, Ray's is -the- place to hold an event in the Seattle area. From a small intimate gathering to an 120 person shin-dig, I can't recommend the team at Ray's Catering any higher. In a warm summer day you can sit on the out side deck and enjoy the amazing view of Puget sound, At Ray's cafe the atmosphere is very casual, the food are always fresh and delicious. my personal favorite are the calamari, and grilled salmon skewer with pineapple. I'm seeing possibly the most wonderful man alive because he oh so casually took me to Ray's, and by casually I mean we were in jeans and fresh from dragging the beasties around Green Lake and I said, "hmm, how about fish?" and he said Ray's, and how did I know it was a Big Deal? He's unpretentious that way, unlike, of course, Ray's. Ray's is the sort of restaurant where the waiter is borderline obsequious to allow you to better celebrate the fact that at least one of you can afford it. It's pricey, people. So pricey I audibly gasped at the menu and he had to talk me down. But the fish, it is good. Thai mussels swam peacefully in a red curry sauce that called for a bowl of rice - and they were plump and tender. The seafood classic platter was perfectly executed without the over-saucing of lesser kitchens. Plus - there are some good wine deals to be had. Sunset at Ray's is pretty romantic, although it might be more so if one is not covered with dog hair at the time. read more

Come to Ray's Cafe only for the view nowadays - maybe a strong drink. If you want tasty food at a fair price and good service, this is not your place. Beware: step outside on the patio, and happy hour prices are not honored during the seemingly gracious happy hours at Ray's Cafe. The appetizers were mediocre, at best (calamari, seared ahi, hummus) especially at full price on the patio. One Friday in May, I found $100 dollars on the sidewalk. No kidding. Guess how I spent it in the hours following? Yep, at Ray's, Sipping cocktails and eating one of my favorite meals I've had in Seattle. We sat at the bar and enjoyed the gorgeous view. The bartender/ our server was perfect. The Asian fusion white fish entree was nothing short of memorable. My date had the halibut (never a bad choice) and was not disappointed. I went To Ray's purely for the view, and was sort of expecting the food to be a little on the mediocre side as a result. Quite the opposite was true. First of all, the view was better than I imagined it would be - floor to ceiling windows, every table has a great view AND we went on a rarely sunny day in Seattle for a perfect sunset. Second of all, the food was great. Particular stand-outs in my opinion were the smoked salmon blinis (the smoked salmon was out of this world) and the sablefish (also known as black cod), which was melt in mouth and beautifully flavoured. Finally the service was great. We were there for about 3 hours and never felt rushed at all, and our server was super friendly. Overall - great date/parent place, and a little bit classier than the average restaurant so dress up just a smidge and leave those hiking sandals at home ;). read more

We went to Ray's for the first time in years recently. It was for my wife's birthday and she wanted traditional NW seafood. The front of house staff was courteous and I had requested a view table via Open Table. They were aware of this when we arrived and had us wait a few moments while they prepared a window table. The table was great, good view, although it was late by then, so there was not much to see (my fault, not theirs). Upon looking at the menu we instantly realized that the previous menu that we had experienced was no longer available. The new menu appears to be less traditional and more oriented around the current chef's desires. It was a little eclectic and didn't really excite us, but we were there so we plowed ahead. We started with a poke appetizer, which was fine. Not the best we have had, but still it was ok enough, although a bit salty. Our entrees were a risotto and a sablefish that was recommended by the server, we shared both. Both were incredibly salty, heavily salted by the chef. The risotto contained cured olives and artichoke hearts, both of which are salty on their own and probably did not require much additional salt for the dish, yet, additional salt was certainly added. The sablefish was oily and again, overly salty. Sablefish is usually a little oily, and I have not cared for it much in the past for that reason, so I cannot blame them for that. But the excessive use of heavy salt on every portion of this meal made it unappetizing. If it were only one dish that was salty I could let it slide, but it was the entire meal including the butter for the bread. This was the worst meal I have ever had there, and the new menu does not appeal to me. I would recommend that anyone deciding to go there should first look at the online menu to make sure that they know what they will be eating. read more

This is a but overdue but I felt I needed to put my 2 cents in. My boyfriend and I decided to go to Rays Boathouse for valentines day. We hadn't made any reservations and it was pretty last minute however they were very accommodating when we arrived. We sat in the bar area which would typically still have a view of the water but because it was after dark, we couldn't really see much. Out waiter was very friendly and attentive. The appetizers were good, my boyfriend ordered the steamed clams, I ordered a salad and a cheese plate - we were pleased with the starters. Once the entrees arrived we were immediately disappointed. It didn't look appetizing and normally I eat with my eyes prior to actually eating so I was bummed to say the least. I ordered a steak which was mediocre at best. It was covered in a heavy goopy mushroom sauce which was not appetizing. It also had a side of spaghetti squash and some potatoes which were just bland. By boyfriend ordered salmon which had the same sides. The salmon arrived under cooked and the waiter explained that they cook their salmon medium to rare. My boyfriend ended up eating it but he wasn't thrilled. When our bill came it was a whopping $200 (we didn't even order any wine/drinks or dessert). Normally, for a nice romantic dinner we wouldn't mind spending the money however for food that was just not good we were not pleased. We've been going to Ray's for years and it's always been a favorite of ours. We decided to stop by for lunch on our anniversary the other day and enjoy the view and have some good food & drinks in the cafe. The last couple of times we went it was late night happy hour and we were treated as though they were doing us some sort of favor by letting us partake. We just chalked that up to being busy, the late hour, bad day, and didn't worry about it too much because the food was good and it wasn't a big deal. This time we got off to a good start when the waitress tried handing me the menu, bobbled it and it fell on the floor. After giving me a dirty look for her dropping it while trying to hand it to me, she picked it up and handed it to me again with a disgusted look. Hmmm... really lady?! The service continued on this path for the remainder of our lunch. Food and drinks were just tossed on the table in front of us with no smile, eye contact, nothing. We kind of laughed and said that it must just be a miserable place to work and that it seemed everyone was suffering from the same rudeness. To make matters worse, it wasn't just the exceptionally bad service, but now the food! We ordered the mussels which are always great and were shocked that NONE of them had been cleaned / de-bearded! We didn't send them back because we didn't want to take the time to wait... and besides what were they going to do? Debeard an already cooked mussel?? Anyhow, we've come to the conclusion that Ray's has become way overpriced for the type of establishment that it is now. Miseable experience, never again. We were seated very promptly, downstairs and out side on a lovely evening. Wait staff pleasant at first, coctails arrived, salds showed up and then we waited, and waited. I inquired as to the status of our main course and it all went directly down hill from there. The manager stopped by to see if everything was ok, I explained I had been treated rudely. From then on out we were ignored, meal showed up, NEVER saw anyone after that. I absolutely loved my dinner at Ray's Boathouse. I had a delicious wild berry martini to start off. It was the perfect combination of sweet and bitter, yum! We shared a starter of the Oregon coast dungeness crab which was delicious. I had the Dungeness crab cakes for dinner which came with an amazing piquillo pepper dressing I had to ask the server for a little bit more of it! My boyfriend had the strip steak which he enjoyed. I had never been here prior to, but made a reservation here for my boyfriends birthday. I ended up quite happy with the decision to come here. Everyone delivered great service from the very beginning. The hostesses were welcoming and helpful (we didn't know if we needed to be upstairs and downstairs), and once we realized we needed to be downstairs, we were taken straight away to our table. There waited a birthday card for him from the restaurant. The space is beautiful and open with great views. It is broken up by the bar in the middle of it, which only hindered our view a little bit. Our server was very helpful and went over a lot of the menu items with us. At first, it seemed like he was simply just reading us the menu, but then he mentioned facts about where exactly the salmon had been caught that weren't mentioned, I was sold (Cedar planked wild Alaskan Salmon). In the past, I've had difficulty having salmon at restaurants that isn't as fresh and well-prepared as my dad made growing up, but this ended up being a close rival. It was amazing and the wine pairing they suggested to go with it was great (Haden Fig pinot noir). Boyfriend ordered the Wagyu Sirloin + Jumbo Prawns and that was also delicious. Overall, it's a good standby for a nice dinner without going all the way downtown. Good food, excellent views, and great service from exiting your car until you drive away. read more

After my last post, the restaurant reached out to us and - wow - did they make it right! My boyfriend and I had a "meh" experience here back in February. I've been going to Ray's for years, and have always had very good to great experiences. The Feb dinner was an exception. The manager helped us to schedule and then reschedule dinner. We were warmly greeted and seated at the same table as before - with an outstanding view! Everything was perfect from the food to the service. Ahi appetizer, black miso cod, and the oscar style filet were all fresh off the cook -- tender, delicate, and finely seasoned. There was no bill so we left a generous tip. So got my hair done @ Habitude for like 3 hours without eating breakfast and we were freeaaakin starving! We went to Ray's cafe and sat outside on the balcony. So nice! It was kinda cold but they provide blankets.The view is great and you can see boats come in and out of the Locks. The clam chowder was soo delicious.(Usually I don't like the little pieces in clam chowder but I scarfed down the whole things pretty fast) And because I was super hungry I needed a cheeseburger LOL.. The cheeseburger was made medium well -yummy! Fries were crispy.. Couldnt't even finish the burger but went home sleepy and full for the rest of the day.Great Day. read more

Rays is like getting to second base in a baseball game. You have to be good at the game to do it, but its just not as good as hitting the ball out of the park. Ray's has alot of those great aspects of a good local restaurant, but there just seems to be something holding it back. I can't put my finger on it, maybe its the price, could be the service, maybe the food, but I don't think so. All those things are good, just not great. And that sort of sums up Rays, Good... Not Great. I did add an extra star however because in the summer you can sit out on the deck with an amazing view, watching boats coming in and out of the harbor while feeding the sea birds bits of bread. read more

I find it odd that people give this place 3 stars. If you're not going to give this place 5 stars then you may as well return to whatever fairytale land you're from because this place really is as good as it gets. That said... Ray's is a place I love to take my bay area parents to so I can impress the pants off them on how we do it up here in Seattle. Then I'm reminded each time that this place would be a spectacular date place. If you do want to come here, look up when sunset is, and make reservations around then. Most all the restaurant faces the sound and you get a stunning view of both the sound and the Olympics as the sun drifts behind them (likely behind some clouds as well). The service is always impeccable here. The wait staff is friendly, knowledgable and available without seeming desperate. They seem to have that fine line well marked and they walk it well. The place overall focuses (not exclusively) on local which is awesome. So there is a healthy selection of local microbrews, local wines, and many of the drinks are made from local spirits from the region. I'll say they have some intriguing drinks on the menu. Classics, and inspirations of classics. They're certainly keeping up with current mixology trends. The place even makes their own tonic. The humble G&T gets a makeover with their own hand-made tonic base. Finally the food. The menu emphasizes seafood, but you can of course usually get steak here. I think I went with a salmon and clams dish when I was here. My wife got the sablefish. This is one of those places that really makes me wonder how they do it. Fish is perfectly cooked. Presentation is gorgeous, and the flavor is better than anything I've had anywhere else. Of course you get what you pay for here. This isn't a diner. If you're going to a place to for this sort of experience, it is money well spent. However, the last time I was there the house chardonnay was $4 glass, and very good a that. I don't remember the last time I only paid that little for chardonnay so good. So there are notable exceptions. If you want a place to pleasantly surprise some guests, or friends. In town, or out I highly recommend Ray's. I've never been disappointed here. read more

I came here on a Friday night with a group of 7. We had to wait 20 minutes for our table, not too bad as it have us a chance to catch up but not ideal. Apparently the place has been renovated in the last however many months. Decently adorned with dark wood and subtle nautical touches or maybe that's just me projecting because of the proximity to the water. It was dark by the time we got there but I imagine its a great view in the late afternoon/sunset. The food was okay. One of the underwhelming appetizers was the cheesy pastries. Several commented that we didn't taste any cheese. It was just an airy pastry. I got the skate fish which is their cod/ butterfish that apparently is the only hold over from the previous menu. That's what sold me. It was flavorful. Didn't like it as much as the one at Roy's but worth trying. The other knock was an error on the bill where they added four items that we didn't order. They were removed when we pointed it out but that shouldn't have happened in the first place. Not sure if I would go back. read more

As someone who has frequented both, I can tell you that they are two very different dining experiences. So this review is solely for the boathouse (the pricier, stodgier, more formal older brother). I will post my review for the cafe upstairs under the separate "Ray's Cafe" listing.] Ray's is definitely the most famous Seattle seafood place, and it's well-deserved. I have no hesitation in listing this off as the one place to hit for someone coming in from out of town. BUT, I will add that with the caveat that I always recommend the cafe, not the boathouse. Same kitchen, virtually the same food (smaller portions at the cafe \ bit cheaper). But the ambiance is really what brings the boathouse at Ray's down a star or two. It sits right on the water, which is beautiful. But it's dark, poorly-lit, with low ceilings and a prominent 70's/80's vibe. In other words, the boathouse could use a remodel. I like dimly-lit restaurants. But every time I'm at the boathouse, I want to take a nap, especially after the sun goes down. The food, however, is some of the best seafood around. Planked salmon to die for. Marinated sablefish? Sinful and fatty. And service is always spot-on. The wine list is expansive, and $$ at that. So I feel kinda like an a$$ for only giving three stars given that the food is so good. But the cafe blows away the boathouse in terms of views, atmosphere, crowd, and price. So I would recommend the cafe any day over the boathouse. That being said, if you want to impress & pull out all the stops, the boathouse is a retro classic. read more

Firstly, I have seen where they will make people wait 30-45 minutes, when there are empty tables. Who does that? I'd rather have slower service and get to enjoy the deck, than sit in their lobby. We have spent 2 anniversaries here; we will continue go back without hesitation every year. A bit sappy, but hey, when you find something love, stick with it. Halibut, yes. Salmon, yes. Anything with dungeness crab, yes yes. Veggies are always fresh and very well prepared. Staff is better than 5 star, very, they stay out of your face, they dont touch your water glass when refilling, and they are professional...which is not always the case around Seattle. There really are not too many views that beat this. Make a reservation that allows you to watch the sun set over the Olympics and the Sound. BTW, the cafe on the second floor kicks a$$ as well. read more

About a year ago my friend and I had a really nice lunch and drinks on Ray's great patio. I went back with the same friend recently and it was like a different restaurant! Fortunately their awesome view hadn't changed but everything else did. The food: not good. I had the chicken sandwich. The bottom half of the roll was so soggy that I couldn't even pick it up. The top half was so stale that when I tried to cut into it, it just disintegrated into crumbs. The rockfish was decent at best. The drinks: totally watered down and overpriced! The service: I think maybe it was just an off day for the staff but the whole place looked and felt chaotic! It wasn't even very busy. Our orders were mixed up, we sat for 15 minutes with empty waters and drinks, we had beer poured on our toes and everything took longer than it should have. It feels like Ray's has gone down hill. Took my parents here on their first night in Seattle and it was perfect. We got a stunning view of the water, the service was excellent and food was exactly what you pay for. We got the following: Steamed Manila Clams: best part of the meal! they give you a huge bowl of clams that are very meaty. the sauce was so delicious that we kept it for dipping bread! Cedar Planked Wild Alaskan King Salmon: delicious, but you could also get great salmon at any nice Seattle restaurant Sablefish in Sake Kasu: fish was buttery and melted in your mouth like a piece of black cod, but we found it to be saltier than expected Wild Northwest Pacific Halibut: flaky and delicious. we didn't expect this to be our favorite, but turned out great! My review is echoing the one below because I was with Ashley and her husband at the time and experienced the way this mistake was handled. When a customer says they have a food allergy, you'd think the restaurant would take that seriously. The first time they made the mistake of putting onions and peppers in my friend's dish, he was annoyed, but politely told our waitress that the dish had onions in it. She apologized, took the plate, and brought it back to the kitchen. After that, the manager came to our table to apologize and told him they were making him a new dish. She then came back with the new dish and said, "I watched him make this, and there are no onions," which we appreciated... Until he found onions again. Ashley and I were both irate at this point and alerted the manager again. She awkwardly stood there, staring at him. It was obvious she was super uncomfortable and just didn't know how to handle the situation. When they brought the check out (which had my friend's meal deducted, but not the entire check which would have been the obvious/right thing to do) the manager gave us her card and said when we come back she'd personally take care of our reservations. I've been here only once, but it was enough to keep thinking about returning. I loved the sablefish, it was different then what I expected. They have a nice bar, good drinks, and a wonderful atmosphere in which to dine. It's on the waterfront, so you get the whole seafood dining experience. read more
