We had a wonderful family dinner, party of 6, here on a Saturday night. We had made reservations well in advance and they had a round table in a corner waiting for us. This was perfect because we had a 4 year old with us. Our server was very knowledgeable of the menu and gave us excellent recommendations! We started with a strawberry vodka cocktail and although it didn't taste like it-It was very strong and delish! Husband had an old fashioned, also strong! For apps we tried the tomato bread and mozzarella cheese sticks. Huge portion of the tomato bread and both were absolutely fantastic - hard to say about that about cheese sticks but they were the best We have had. Also ample bread, butter and free Bowl of yummy homemade meatballs! We could have been done then but had full entrees as well. The baked onion soup was to die for, and homemade garlic and ranch salad dressings great too. For our entrees-beef tournedos. Huge and the bearnaise sauce was the best thing ever. Garlic mashed potatoes were the perfect side. Others ordered steak Diane, pepper steak and chicken Florentine. Everyone loved their dishes and had a ton of leftovers! Amazing! We celebrated our anniversary tonight the Princess cafe and the food was phenomenal! The drive is worth it if you love filet and lobster. Not for vegan or special diets, which was tricky for my gluten/dairy free self, but I don't remember the last time I had such an amazing filet! A little pricey, so be prepared, but oh so worth it! i haven't been there in over 20 years. I had steak and my wife did also , steaks were fair at best . not a lot of flavor .a very crowded Saturday night. food was served very late , 45 minutes after being seated 40 min after reservation time. so we were a bit hungry from the wait, food came out same time as soup . so didn't get a chance to enjoy the soup, French onion $ 7 apiece . it was ok as far as flavor. manager told us they had too mamy customers. well now they have two less to worry about. spend your money were the restraunt actually cares about the quality of the food and the quality of the service they provide. meals are in the range of 40-125 depending on what you order. the couple we were with did like the lobster they had but the service so much tonight. read more

Food is mediocre at best. It's good it is dark in there so you can't see the dirty carpeting. Food is over priced. Wait staff is good but hostess is rude. They over book on Wednesday nights so even with a reservation they make you wait. Went to The Princess Cafe today for my birthday. I come in the door and I see stairs.I lack feeling in my legs so I'm unsteady on my feet. To the right we see an elevator. However, there is no sign, there is no weight capacity, there is no host, the only way to get to the host is, yes, up the stairs. So we decide it must just be a simple self serve elevator and we get in, go up, and when up it shuts down and won't let us out. This is when the hostess comes. She's pissed. AT US She has an elevated tone and starts saying " why did you use this didn't you see the sign (which was on the top level not the bottom), and then asked what we did to it. We said nothing. She tells us that it sticks all the time, they thought they had it fixed, eye roll eye roll while she's walking us to get seated. I'm like don't take your anger out on me I can go, unless you'd like to apologize. She gives me a half heated apology, doesn't even turn around to say it to my face. NOW I'm stuck up a flight of stairs. This is important ladies and gentlemen of the jury- I hear her say to the guy who will be our waiter that there is no sign downstairs and they have to call to have the elevator fixed again. He throws his hands in the air. Then we wait for someone to serve us. I'm trying to hide my tears at this point so mom and Dylan can have a good time. Up to our table walks Jim, the waiter, probably not his real name, the guy with the hands. I say I don't want to be here but we decide to stay because IM LITERALLY trapped at this point. Repeatedly during the dinner, Jim asks if we need anything, and as we attempt to answer he says wait I have to go see this other table I'll be right back. 3 times this happened. Why did you ask? Were those other people more important? I decide once mom and Dylan leave I'll confront him. People I am not joking when I tell you this jerk gave me the biggest attitude EVER. His exact words were "have I not provided you with excellent service today?" I'm thinking now ooooooh bitttttch there's gonna be words now. But I'm a frigging lady so I decide to play it cool since I'm at the table and I don't want to ruin anyone's dinner so I basically said "my bad" thinking I'll talk to the manager later. I happened to mention it was my birthday and he brought out cake and sang like you could buy me with cake mother trucker I'm on a low carb diet now you've shoved sugar in my diabetic face and just made me angrier. And it wasn't a I'm sorry you had a bad time please accept this cake cake. Oh no, they charged me for it. Little did I know that while this was going on Dylan was talking to angry hostess lady asking how we get out. She says she didn't know because "you broke my elevator." Then tells him about a ramp in the back but we need someone to take us there. So I ask Jim to have a manager walk us. TWIST Jim is the manager. Or rather "he does manager duties." he says he wants to go ahead of us to make sure the floor isn't wet. He waives us over like it's ok. Guess what? The floor is wet. I feel like I'm being trumped. There were puddles my people. Puddles. I'm thinking in my head that this witch is trying to kill me. I let mom and Dylan leave so I can do this alone. Jim says "I only have a second because my food is up." People this is when it gets saucy because I've had it at this point. I've lost decorum. I'm not a lady anymore. I say "oh no you're gonna listen today." I begin to list the numerous violations they have made according to the ada, the health code, and of just plain human decency. He hears nothing because he has to get his food, eye roll eye roll, yada yada. I'm blocking him from leaving while I talk. Again no apologies no politesse. Finally I let go. Let's finally get to the point. This restaurant, and other businesses and people who do these things to the disabled, need to be held accountable. read more

Ate there for a second time and went home hungry again. Was in the mood for the french dip and was told it wasn't available so ordered one of the chicken dinners for $32. Came with a thimble of soup and a tiny scoop of mash potatoes. The chicken was so overcooked and dry I can't believe they served it to customers. I politely said it was overcooked and dry and they agreed to take it off the menu but you still get a $10 charge for the thimble of soup and small scoop of potatoes. Will never eat here again. We took our neighbor there for her birthday because this was her favorite restaurant and she was happy with the Sole and my wife was happy with the prime rib but if you order something not on the regular menu you will probably not be happy. Great food, great waitress, expensive food. Saturday nights, they will not allow separate tickets at one table. They said it's too much time for the waitress to separate the ticket. We had 9 people. There would had been 4 checks if allowed. Instead, it took us a little over a half hour to figure out who owed what. (Bill was over $600) I would think as a restaurant, it would had been easier to split the bill. Also, the waitress lost out on another table coming in her section because it took too long for us to figure out our totals. We feel this is not good customer service. The food was fine but for a supposedly "nice" restaurant, they nickel and dime you to death. They used to offer a complimentary relish tray at the start of the meal - now they charge you. Wow! After bragging to everyone that will listen, I can't say we will ever recommend Princess again to our friends. Tonight, we invited a couple to dinner with us, after bragging how outstanding this place was, we were WRONG for the first time ever. After waiting 45 minutes to be seated after our reservation time, it then took another 55 minutes to get our appetizer of baked French onion soup, only to be informed that because our server had too many tables, our entree was going to arrive very soon after the soup. Now French onion soup is NOT EASY to eat fast and definitely not enjoyable to eat fast while feeling like we were in a race to avoid our entree coming out. Sure enough, our entree arrived about 7 minutes after the soup......UNACCEPTABLE!! We actually had to cancel our salad, because what were we supposed to do, eat the salad as dessert??? I took my concerns to the manager who promised to "take care of us", well that resulted in ONE french onion soup being removed from our check per couple and nothing but excuses about how busy they are and short staffed they are on a Saturday night, yet they continue to accept reservations???? The food was actually delicious (thankfully), but we walked away with a very expensive meal that was very disappointing and a 3 hour dining experience. Totally unacceptable in my opinion. Sorry Princess, you are going to need to try harder for great customer service. read more

My favorite restaurant of all time! The steaks are phenomenal. The salmon with dill champagne sauce is delicious. I love the relish tray, the meatballs and sauce served before your meal...we always get saganaki. The baked French Onion Soup is outstanding. Steak and Lobster, if you want to splurge. Pincess Cafe is an institution in the area, famous for frog legs. The menu is not only meat heavy, the vegetables offered are fried or a potato of some sort, baked, mashed or fried. The salad was pale iceburg with a tomato and some wilted onion. As a vegetarian, the only option for me was a pasta Primavera....which was seriously lacking in flavor. They used to offer a relish tray prior to your meal. It had pickeled and fresh crudite which was typically where I would get my nutrition. They no longer offer this. The staff was lovely, although they clearly could have used more staff. Unless you are a big fan if over priced meat and/or seafood, skip this place and take a longer drive to something worth your money. read more

Get Evan as your server. He is very knowledgeable about the menu and will be honest about the quality of the food ad what is good. Food is made to order and the quality/service never disappoints. The menu has its main staples as well as the specials but we never get tired of the food or atmosphere. Quality of service and the product rivals "well known" Chicago restaurants. I think the Xhef could afford to be slightly adventurous at times with the menu given his expertise but then again if it's not broken why fix it. We are repeat customers albeit not as often as I prefer but we love the Princess for our night out, special occasions, and birthdays. 3 teens in our family of 5 and they never complaint about the place. I grew up in Beecher, Illinois, and defected to the city (much to the chagrin of the locals). Here's the thing: It does not get better than The Princess. Hands down. My first memories of The Princess at the ripe old age of five are eating Grandma's secret recipe meatballs ( provided with all dinners at The Princess and which have not changed in 31 years) and basking in the family dining atmosphere. Let me frame the review: I live on the north side of Chicago near Evanston and I still drive to The Princess for dinner. That's saying something... First off, I've not had a bad meal at the Princess. I am hard pressed to find an item on the menu which I've either A) not had or B) Didn't like. For appetizers, go with the saganaki. For main courses, I love their steaks, frog legs, shrimp dishes and anything with a Greek flair. The soups are homemade, the salads are always fresh and every meal comes with a large collection of relishes. I've never walked away from The Princess hungry. Yeah, it's expensive for Beecher. But, honestly, think of the quality and quantity of the food. If you're looking for a pizza from Aurelio's, then go to Aurelio's and stop trying to make The Princess something it's not. The one and only thing which pains me is that it's now soup OR salad, when it used to be soup AND salad. Ah, well, the pain is nostalgia related. Our party of 5 went to the Princess last night and had a wonderful dinner and experience. Our waitress was attentive without being overbearing. And the food? well the food was the best. Along with the relish tray, soup or salad, and potato, all of our meals were prepared to perfection. Steaks were tender and prepared to perfection as well as the Haddock. Myself and one other had the seafood platter. I can attest that the perch, shrimp, scallops, and frog legs were sauteed to perfection. It's about a 50 minute drive from the City, but I don't believe I've had a better meal in the City of Great Restuarants. read more

Our first time here.... Early Valentine's Day. We started off with the sautéed shrimp. . Only 4 pieces, but soooo good! Next , i had the baked French onion soup, and my husband had the cream of broccoli. . He had the Steak Diane. I had the veal chop... HUGE!! (see photo ). The Princess has been a favorite "special occasion" restaurant in our family for years, but no more. Over the past few years, we have been disappointed after each visit. Their french onion soup is classic, and delicious, and absent. Our reservations were for one hour after opening, the french onion soup was gone. The prime rib was the special for the evening, it too, was gone. Such was the case for our next three visits. We never minded the price as it was only for special occasions, however, if I am going to pay the prices they charge, I would just as well go downtown, they'll have french onion soup. The restaurant is beautiful however,but very dark and makes it difficult to even read the menu, and it is disappointing to give such a sentimental restaurant a poor review, but unfortunately we will not return. read more

One of my favorite restaurants of all time. It is usually packed and reservations can run behind. However, the food, the service, and the ambiance are worth the wait. You must try the seafood. The scallops de jonghe is a personal top choice for an entree. And for an appetizer the blue point oysters on the half shell are huge and sensational! Got reservations for 730 pm, arrived at 739, called the restaurant numerous times prior and post arrival, I even watched the phone ring until 749 when we were finally greeted by the hostess. She stated our reservation would be delayed 30 minutes since they were behind and we should have arrived earlier also, there was no way to verify our actual arrival time since she was out working. The atmosphere was dimly lit and smelled of stagnant saltwater and stale fish. Would not recommend, just go to an Applebee's for similar food and better customer service read more

This place is pretty good. The staff was all nice and the service was quick. I think they sang Happy birthday three times, including once to my Dad, but there heart was in the right place lol. My Steak Diane was superlative, it was well cooked and juicy, further elevated by the consummate sauce it was paired with. I also had a bite of my grandfather's prime rib which was also pretty good. The serving sizes we're large and came with several well sized sides. My only problem with the restaurant was some of the side dishes, one dish came with french fries which were horrible, we had a cheesecake which was substandard and a shrimp cocktail as an appetizer which was also pretty bad. I did however get a french onion soup which I liked. Overall, good service and food, just a little rough around the edges. read more
