It looked like reservations are highly recommended if you're planning to dine in. The ambience was elegant, calm, and intimate, and the service was hard-working, cheerful, and accommodating. Our large group ordered a variety of drinks, and not a single person was disappointed. I can personally vouch for the espresso martini and the Fashioned in Apple; both perfectly suited my tastes. For dessert, a friend ordered the chocolate mousse while I chose the Yule Log. The presentation was gorgeous and delicate, and of course, they were delicious. A quick tip: definitely call ahead for a reservation. The dining area is small but cozy, offering a really intimate vibe. The cocktails were fantastic, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. The food? Outstanding. You can tell the owner knows a thing or two about authentic flavors--probably from time spent traveling and living abroad. I really appreciated how true the dishes stayed to their roots. The semi-open kitchen was also a great touch--it shows they're confident in their craft and proud of what they're serving. We stumbled upon this place looking for high quality food in the NWI area and despite a mixup during making our reservation (completely our bad) the restaurant and staff were still accommodating which was the beginning of an amazing food and dining experience. We were a bit early for our reservation and got a chance to head to their gorgeous lounge to browse the drink menu. The staff was extremely kind and helpful on menu recommendations, we started with the mushroom pate which was fantastic and opted for the duck and sea bass entrees. By far the best dishes we've had prepared in a long time, especially the duck that had us wanting more! The drinks were well made and balanced and the ambience was very calm and romantic. This was an amazing restaurant- the greeting was incredible and our server (Scott) did an incredible job! The food was probably some of the best we had ever tried- we started with an amuse bouche which was great (the gold leaf was a nice touch). We went with the tasting menu so we could try a few things. Shrimp cocktail was great, soup was awesome, scallop was really good and the pork chop was incredible. We finished with baked Alaska- two choices - berry and s'mores - both were delicious! From initial contact through wrapping up our celebration, the Figs and Fables experience was absolute perfection. They delivered high end ambiance, service, and food without being ostentatious. I could describe the food in detail, but I feel that would take away the joy of discovery that we experienced with every course. However, I will say the coffee service done with mismatched tea cups was a delightful surprise, and a salad that was more beet than greens took Grandma back to her days of eating fresh produce from her garden, and the pastry chef's chocolate cake was perfectly decadent. Ordered a glass of champagne at the bar, and when I handed cash to pay, the bartender asked me if I needed the change. I was never even told the price of the glass. We had the tasting menu and requested the main meat course be boxed as we were already full with several more courses to come. They never even brought the boxes to the table. We were busy talking, didn't notice, and left without them. All three of us, in different cars, realized it on the way home, None of us were of a mind to return and cause a fuss. New spot in downtown Valpo! I strolled in the other night for drinks and had the pleasure of meeting the owner Adam and the bartender Ellie. Great conversations about the inspiration behind the place and insight into specific dishes/drinks. We decided to order the caviar sampler and it was such an unexpected and fun experience. We will definitely be back to have a formal dinner. This is a great place to get dressed up and celebrate a special event with a special person! We had been here before and enjoyed a nice a-la-carte dinner, so booked it again for a Valentine's Day treat. Once seated, we were presented with a surprise. The a la carte menu was suspended; they offered either a 6 course ($135) or a 10 course ($195) tasting menu. This hadn't been revealed to us either on the website or on the reservation site. We did decide to stay, but further disappointments awaited. Most courses were just ok, although two of them were oversalted. Lobster bisque and focaccia were excellent. Dessert was classic chocolate/berry and to some would be sublime. Not for us, though, as we usually skip dessert. Their aspirations are high but execution is wanting. Our first time to Figs and Fables and everything was absolutely amazing from start to finish! Rich was a fantastic server and all of his recommendations were spot on. The wagu bites and turkey meatball appetizers both had a lovely combination of flavors, and my main dish 'quak quak' was some of the best duck I've ever had. We were there for a birthday celebration and instead of the typical dessert that any restaurant would do, their pastry chef created a sensational work of art in the cake that was brought out to us. Every bite was a discussion point at the table and we were delightfully surprised at the flavors, textures, and presentation. If you love an Old Fashion, please do yourself a favor and order it! You'll thank me later :) We felt so special the whole evening by the way we were treated by all the staff including the owner Adam who was very hands on and excited to share his restaurant dream with all of us! We had a wonderful evening at Figs & Fables celebrating two birthdays in our extended family. Rich was our waiter and he was knowledgeable, kind, and gracious. They brought us a free Tuna tartar with which to start. Nice touch! We got two starters, the Wagyu Kushiyaki (on the right) and the Ceylonese Terrines (on the left) and they were both very delicious! The Ceylonese Terrines were a little spicy, but not over the top. I ordered the "Oldie But A (sic) Goodie" from the Signature Whisky Cocktails" portion of the drinks menu. The presentation for my drink was impressive and it was also a really nice drink. For my entree I had the Miso Glazed Chilean Sea Bass and it was amazing. I typically had Sea Bass with no sauce, but this was just right. The ambience of the restaurant was dark with mostly gold trim in the dining area and bathrooms. We were seated in the private room at the back and that made for a special evening. When the reservation for the evening was made, we them it was for birthday and to please prepare a birthday cake, leaving the pastry chef to do what they thought best and it was exceptional! We wanted to go out for a nice dinner for my birthday. My wife called Figs and Fable to see if they could accommodate 3 vegans for dinner. Scott and Adam (both amazing by the way) called my wife back and were excited to have us join them for the celebration and asked a few questions about favorite veggies. When we arrived we had a nice glass of champagne in the beautiful lounge and they informed us the chef and kitchen had prepared a 4 course vegan tasting menu for us, but only if we wanted, we could still order off the regular menu and they would accommodate. We went with the tasting menu and so glad we did, it was truly amazing. First, let me see the ambiance of the entire place is upscale, yet not pretentious at all, very inviting and chic, great music is both the lounge and dining room. The tasting menu ended up being by far, one of the best dining experiences I've had dining out. At first I said this rivals Chicago restaurants, but after thinking back, no, it's even better. I truly believe Chicagoans will travel to dine here at some point as I've travelled to Chicago to dine in the past. I hope they add the carrot hummus and risotto to the regular menu so everyone can experience how great both of these dishes taste. My cauliflower steak was even better than the last cauliflower steak that I had here a few weeks ago, and that at the time was the best once I've tried. (And I've had many). It was my favorite cocktail of the few I enjoyed. What a smooth drink! I also had an XO "sunrise" if there is such a thing. That was beyond smooth! The yellowfin crudo was full of flavor yet so delicate. In addition it was very visually appealing. For my entree I had the Guilded 20oz bone in ribeye. Whoa, what a steak. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite! The caviar baked potato was a fantastic touch that added a pleasant texture I wasn't expecting. Now on to the gem on this meal, dessert! I had 2, the coconut paradise and pistachio jaconde cake. Both were amazing, with the coconut paradise being my favorite. Sean and I finally tried Figs & Fables this evening. Saying this was an incredible experience is a major understatement!! We stopped in for a couple of drinks and an appetizer. We were very fortunate to have been helped by the owner, Adam. Remembered him from Valpo Soup Kitchen. Loved hearing his history, the theme of the restaurant, and how some of the dishes were made. Opted for 2 appetizers and an incredible Peach Melba dessert. We will definitely be back!! While the prices might seem high to some people, you are most definitely paying for the quality of the food.
