Figs and Fables - Sea bass with cauliflower mousse and collared greens; a bit on the saltier side but flavors still very good.

Oh wow! I never would have imagined an experience like this in Valpo. We had a last-minute reunion…read moreduring the holidays and managed to snag spots on the bar side. It looked like reservations are highly recommended if you're planning to dine in. The ambience was elegant, calm, and intimate, and the service was hard-working, cheerful, and accommodating. Our large group ordered a variety of drinks, and not a single person was disappointed. I can personally vouch for the espresso martini and the Fashioned in Apple; both perfectly suited my tastes. For dessert, a friend ordered the chocolate mousse while I chose the Yule Log. The presentation was gorgeous and delicate, and of course, they were delicious. Now I just need to come back to try the food. The prices might sting a bit, but I have a feeling my taste buds will convince me it's worth it.

We drove 1.5 hours to try this spot--and it was absolutely worth it. We started with cocktails at…read morethe bar lounge while waiting for the rest of our party. A quick tip: definitely call ahead for a reservation. The dining area is small but cozy, offering a really intimate vibe. The cocktails were fantastic, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. The food? Outstanding. You can tell the owner knows a thing or two about authentic flavors--probably from time spent traveling and living abroad. I really appreciated how true the dishes stayed to their roots. The semi-open kitchen was also a great touch--it shows they're confident in their craft and proud of what they're serving. I'm not usually big on desserts, but wow. Honestly, they might be more known for their desserts than the entrees, but both were amazing. What really pulls it all together is the service--attentive, thoughtful, and full of personality. That's what makes this place special.

Food is SO SO SO good! I had the Philly cheesesteak sandwich with fries. The Philly was one of the…read morebest I've had. The steak inside was awesome, not chewy or gummy but melt in your mouth. The fries are also very good: crispy outside and soft fluffy inside. I sat at the bar and the service was quick, friendly, knowledgable, and intuitive. She anticipated my needs and read looks on my face. I don't drink but the bar menu looks great I would def have tried many of the drinks in my younger days. They played EXCELLENT music. Everything was clean, neatly appointed, and the bar glasses (I'm not exaggerating) SPARKLED. You can tell they put a lot of care and attention into their craft. 10/10 highly recommend, can't wait to go back

The friend of the owner then tells the owner to kick us out and so the owner goes up to my husband and forcefully shoves him out of the bar without listening to our side of the story. If he would have let us explain our side, the owner would've realized his friend was calling our friend (the one who wasn't actually with us) homophobic slurs and was being aggressive and trying to pick a fight with us. Obviously the owner doesn't condemn homophobia and is ok with letting his friend harass customers. Wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. I should also mention, my friends (the ones the owner's friend was harassing me over) went to Cellar Door on 2/21 in hopes to talk to the owner and explain the issues the owner's friend caused, but the owner blew them off and wouldn't talk to them. Unfortunately the staff at this place is great, but the ownership will be the downfall of this bar. They don't care about their customers, only protecting their own interests (or homophobic friends).
