We went to here last night for dinner. The food tasted great. I had a chicken and avocado sandwich with sweet potato fries and my husband had buffalo wings and Reuben egg rolls. I was happy they had Good Boy vodka, because a lot of restaurants don't carry that brand. Our bartender Maddie was very attentive, friendly and outgoing. We enjoyed the atmosphere because it was smoke free, not very busy, but busy enough and plenty of TVs to watch sports. We will definitely be back. read more

After exploring the Indiana Dunes State Park we stopped in for a bite to eat. The place was really clean and it had a quaint atmosphere. There a little bar area and an outside patio. It wasn't that busy on a Friday afternoon. I got the BLT and fries, it was good but I had to take out the piece of toast in the middle, they could probably do away with that. My husband's chicken bacon avocado sandwich was enough for two. You could probably split it if you ordered an extra side. My mother in law ordered the same sandwich and they both agreed that it could use some sauce or maybe even some of their aioli, you could probably order some on the side. My father in law got the pulled pork. He is a picky eater and he said it was good. He didn't like the cole slaw, it wasn't tart enough for him. Last night my husband and I, and another couple, came for dinner. The atmosphere was extremely loud! I don't mind fun and laughter but this was so loud you couldn't even have a conversation with someone across the table. Stopped by hoping for a good brewery experience. We ordered a Sun King Cream Ale, but were served a Sun King Orange instead. When we asked about it, the staff didn't seem to care that it was different from what was listed on the menu. We ventured to Gastro 49 after a disappointing experience at another nearby establishment. We wanted to sit outdoors, and we wanted a place with alcoholic beverages. When we arrived, the gentleman behind the bar was so incredibly kind. He asked us to please be patient as he was working alone, and the patio was busy. Despite the warning, the service was prompt, the food was delicious, and the gentleman was so sweet. Among the group of us, we had a molten burger, steak tacos, a smoked chicken sandwich, and a regular burger. Everything was divine. I went out on a limb with the steak tacos, and I was not disappointed. They were flavorful and perfectly cooked. We're so glad we happened upon Gastro 49. I am part of the Valpo Restaurants group on Facebook and I saw someone recommended Gastro 49 for burgers in Chesterton. I put it on my list of places to visit and this is a gold mine if you love burgers. The building itself is a dive as it almost looks like an old 2 story farmhouse. There is a bar area in the front, outside dining, and a dining room. I ordered fried pickles as an appetizer and these pickles were breaded fabulous. It seemed to be a cornbread type of breading. They weren't sliced thick or thin but a good size pickle. The burger I went with was the Molten Lava. It had a spicy mayo, ghost pepper cheese, cajun seasoning, and the most impressive aspect was that the meat was stuffed with jalepenos and bacon. This was a one-of-a-kind burger! The meat was a fresh-made patty and it was cooked just the way I like it. They have a few other burgers to try so it is on the list for revisiting. Fries were more of a thick cut and I liked them. Someone else I was with got the half slab of ribs, and did not really like them. She said they were lukewarm, and the sauce on top seemed to be intended to mask it. I have driven past before and didn't realize what a hidden gem it is. The food was fantastic and the service was great! We tried the jalapeno poppers as an appetizer and I am a wimp when it comes to spicy stuff. They were not too bad, a bit on the spicy side (cleared out my sinuses LOL) but very tasty. I had the classic pub burger cooked perfectly. My daughter had the Grilled Chicken Caprese sandwich. We both had to take half home. We stopped by while breezing through on a road trip in the winter and couldn't help but wonder what the place must be like when they open it up to the outside and have porch side seating. Very easy five-star burger hot spot, we had a little twenty minutes wait on a surprisingly busy Saturday evening. Had we all been over bar age We easily could have been seated, but for quality burgers it turned out to be no problem at all. We went for the jalapeno appetizers which were fantastic! Each of us decided on a burger with me doing the hot one, molten lava, and even though a few thought that greasy state was a little problematic it was better for me with the heat of the sauces. It wasn't overly hot at all for me. But I am somewhat well seasoned with the volcanic spices in my kitchen. I can see the average person thinking it's just another hot food item but I had proper distinctions of great ingredients and flavors, combination of the big patty and great sauce made winning beef! All the others seemed funny satisfied as well. I noticed the beignets on the menu and had to go for it, a huge success. Extremely tasty, rich, not overly sweet, and way too small! I really try to be incredibly supportive of local establishments. I go out of my way to over tip and place multiple order weekly just to help keep local businesses thriving. I was reluctant to say much when the menu prices kept going up every month or so but I just placed a to go order for me and my kid. The total was nearly $30 for burger, fries and wings. When I ordered a side of fries I didn't think it would be $5 alone. I wished they would offer some value for the high prices. I'm going to have to pull back on my support. Very disappointed with our food and service today. We had a Greek Salad and the lettuce was certainly less than fresh. I had to ask twice for malt vinegar for perch dinner with no response from the waiter and his helper. Also be aware that there is an additional charge for using a credit or debit card. Went to a local place instead of going to a franchise in the area so was expecting better. requested to be medium but might've been a little bit overdone. Fries and soup were good. The drinks were fabulous.
