Food was good not great but the service was very good. Would try again if I'm in the area. Too far for a regular stop

We came in because of a suggestion of a volunteer at The Visitors Center at Indiana Dunes National Park. It did not disappoint. From the moment we parked, we were greeted by some friendly people outside. We walked in on [[HIGHLIGHT]]the bar side and were directed to the dining side. Even with being on the restaurant sode, you coupd not hear the bar sode activity, so it was perfect if you have kids and want to have conversations. The bar side, even though we didn't hang out over there, had pool tables, a big bar area and Golden Tee[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Theresa, our server, came right over and offered drinks. Fireball special on Tuesdays? Yes, please! I then told her we were from St. Louis, and shockingly (not really), there was a connection. She has family members that live in St. Louis! She recommended the tacos and burger so we naturally got 1 of each, along with a side of tots! Everything was wonderful! You do get free chips and salsa with any entrée, but the salsa really didn't have any flavor. Theresa also told us about their breakfast, but our hotel had complimentary breakfast. We should have listened to Theresa and went there. Oh well, there is always next time! read more

What a great gem! Our waitress was Nina (not sure if I am spelling that right as her name is pronounced, Nine-ah). She was freaking awesome! I couldn't decide what soup I wanted...choices were a mushroom soup or New England clam chowder. She brought me out samples of both! Who does that?!? The clam chowders loaded with clams but just not like I have had at the shore. I chose the mushroom soup and I'm telling you, this soup would rival the soup from Kennett Square, PA...the mushroom Capital of the World! Met the owner, Leroy. Super nice guy! Leroy's Hot Stuff was an amazing surprise! We stopped in here on Saturday night. There is a separate family dining side and a bar side in this restaurant/bar. The restaurant side was quiet, clean, and the food was really good and the portions were generous. I had a chicken burrito dinner with rice and beans, and my husband had the Saturday special which was 3 Sopas (thin cornbread bowl-shell with your choice of meat with melted cheese in it and lettuce and tomato on it). The food was great and more than we could eat! And, icing on the cake--Duke Tomato was playing in the bar just after dinner! The servers in the restaurant and bar were friendly and helpful. So tried a new bar for a beer, some Food and live music. Beer was cold and they had a decent selection. Mexican food was average. They had a strange reservation system to get decent seats to see the band and a 10 dollar cover. Duffys is free with same bands....my advice go to duffys or two bills tap for music. read more

Best tamales I've eaten north of the Red River. Read about this place and decided to try it. Please know that I am leery of Mexican food outside of Texas, but Mario does it well. Beer is not overpriced and Nina, our server, was a delight. We went the next morning for breakfast and the huevos did not disappoint. My only disappointment is that I've lived in the Chesterton area for a year now and am just now discovering Leroy's. As a dive bar, Leroy's wins with the cheap domestic beer specials, friendly "regulars", karaoke nights, and billiards. As a Mexican restaurant, Leroy's wins with good, quality food, hearty portions, and truly affordable prices. The fact that Leroy's combines both give them incredible culinary and adult beverage super powers! This place was awesome! My wife and I stopped in for dinner and sat on the bar side. Dive bar Mexican restaurant is the most accurate description for Leroy's and that's the point. It is wonderful. We enjoyed two hearty dinners and 2 rounds of beer each, all for under $30. What's not to like?! The food was delicious and the staff was SO friendly and welcoming. It was pretty obvious we were about the only ones in the place last night that weren't regulars, but that didn't matter a bit. Very disappointing. This is the second time we're eaten there. The first time, the service was excellent, the food about average. The second time, service was still good, but the food was terrible. We ordered from the Mexican menu. I got flautas and a frozen margarita. The flautas were very small, over fried and the beef inside was dark,dark brown. Almost burnt. The frozen margarita was just crushed ice in a glass with a tablespoon of tequila and margarita mix at the bottom. Basically, after the first few sips, I was drinking ice water. My friend ordered the burrito. It was apparent that the kitchen only threw a couple of rounds of colby/jack presliced cheese on top. The cheese was barely melted. And the inside of the burrito was not hot. And the big screen TV was playing Chicago Fire show. The last thing I want when eating is to watch people suffering from trauma, even if it is staged. Came into this place with my sister for lunch. Pretty cool inside an old biker bar. I specifically wanted lake fried perch that is why I came in here from their menu. I did not enjoy the parts. It seems like a puffy tempura batter rather than cornmeal fried. The taste of the fish was OK but disappointing since it is not what I wanted. Leroy's is an institution. In a word, authentic. A reformed biker bar serving Mexican food and live blues, it is hard to put it in a box. While the clientele has changed with the times to now be a hodge-podge of good folks from different backgrounds, the free spirited mindset and affordable, delicious food remain unchanged. What a gem of a restaurant. While traveling we were looking for Mexican for a late dinner and this was one of the options close to our hotel. First off, it does have a "dive bar" vibe when you look at some of the online pictures but the restaurant is divided up in more of a traditional sit down side (decorated like you'd expect from a small Mexican food joint) and a bar side (complete with pool tables and a long bar). The price was great and the food was great. The standard chips and salsa were crispy and fresh (even at 8pm) and the salsa had a nice spicy kick that was a pleasant surprise. We took advantage of the Taco Tuesday special (a plate of 3 tacos) and chose soft corn tortillas. It was nice to have the choice of corn or flour. We also could have chosen crispy. Both the chicken and the pork were very tasty and the tacos were absolutely stuffed. I actually regretted getting the add-on rice and beans because the tacos were plenty on their own. Each taco used 2 tortillas to ensure they didn't fall apart (yet another pleasant surprise). Being able to feed two people for less than the cost of 2 McDonalds value meals was the icing on the cake. Leroy's Hot Stuff is Porter's hidden gem. Referred to as a "biker bar" it absolutely is not! Leroy supports many local charities and he offers his place for free to local fund raising causes that are heavily attended by bikers who are very generous caring individuals. With that aside now let's talk about the food! First: The dining room is very clean and well kept which is something that is very important to me. Second: You don't have to go south of the border for REAL AUTHENTIC Mexican food, just check out Leroy's Hot Stuff located on rt 20 in Porter. The Pico De Gallo is freshly made and incredible, the chips are always fresh and the house salsa is really good. They offer soup or salad with a dinner and I recommend the soup. The soup is HOMEMADE, not thawed from a bag and reheated and it tastes like Mom made it. The rice and refried beans are also homemade and both are delicious. Today I had the pork sopes and they were perfect. I've had their burritos, tacos, tamales, and fajitas and have never been disappointed. Third: Of course I had a margarita which they make by hand, I personally do not like restaurants who pre-mix a large batch, they just never taste right. Fourth: Great service! The waitstaff are always very attentive and friendly, even post covid they seem to have plenty of waitstaff to cover customer's needs. SO, if you want REAL AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD do yourself a favor and give Leroy's a try. If you pull up and discover a lot of motorcycles parked in front don't be turned off, the local biker charity groups are probably having a fund raiser for a sick child or a family in need. Enter through the dining room entrance on the West end of the building, the dining room and large bar area are separated so a fund raiser or party in the bar side won't bother you at all. I have lived right around the corner from Leroy's for about 18 years and can honestly say I have never heard or seen any trouble there. I'm moving about 30 minutes away in a couple months but I guarantee that when I get a craving for Mexican food: I'm going to Leroy's Hot Stuff!! read more

Here is an honest review: Service: The regulars seemed to be well taken care of. New comers, like myself not so much. Had to go to the bar and ask for things. Food: Salsa was weak and watery with a not so much fresh flavor. Cream of mushroom soup: Watery mushroom soup, is more like it. I was told its homemade? Not from any recipe I've ever seen. Mushrooms breakdown when you cook them, yours are straight from the can. Tacos: Had the beef, again weak without much flavor. Tortillas were cold. Overall, I'll give a rating of 2.5 but that's it. The food is good. I really like the pork tamales, and the steak tacos are good too. Salsa has good flavor. Went for a bowl of Menudo and one tamale. Tamale was fair to average flavor wise. It was also cold in the center. Menudo was generous portion. Broth was not its usual nice red color but more brownish in color. That tells me it wasn't from same day cooked but probably from a day or two ago. Broth was a little too greasy for my taste. I've been eating menudo on and off for 40 years or so. To me this was average menudo. Nothing I would run back for more. Thank you!! read more

I actually cannot attest to the food. We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch and entered through the dining room entrance. If there was a sign that said no minors, we did not see it. We waited a few minutes in the dining room before going to the other bar side to inquire about service. The bartender quite rudely informed us that she would not serve minors (we were four adults and one child so I'm not sure how much trouble the 9 year old could get into). I asked about the dining room and she again repeated quite rudely-no minors. I understand if that's your rule but there's a better way to treat people. As we left through the dining room the waitress did appear and apologized for the bartender's behavior so it was not just us who perceived the hostility. read more

So... It's been 10 years since I've actually stopped in, driving past at 50 mph on route 20 on the way to Beverly Shores or points east and west. So late on January 1st, my brother and I find that all the bars are closed after 10:00 (in our direction). Dark Star in Pines, Bartletts in Beverly Shores... So we drove another 5 miles and the place is packed. It's live comedy night and every seat is taken, but the bar / pool table area is open. They've put up a plywood 4-panel screen so we non-paying people can't see the comedian, but we can hear him. And? Burn'em experimental beer on tap. Zombie Dust in bottles. Life is really good. A friendly bar customer offers to give me a sip of her Burn 'Em vanilla bean pale ale, between drags on her kool menthol (I haven't been in a bar where people smoke in years). I politely decline, as the barmaid offers me a "fresh" taste and recommends we try the Steak Tacos. No shutting down at 10:00. The kitchen is rocking and in less than 10 minutes were eating wonderful steak tacos and some white queso dip... Very good. Way better than late night bar food but not the absolute best. I would leave the sautéed onions out of the steak, as they kind of overpower it, but WTF. This isn't topolobampo, it's a great joint with good people, a cool friendly vibe, great local beer and really good steak tacos. Don't take 10 years to stop in. read more

I viewed reviews to select this restaurant. My husband chose a 3 item platter;the cheese enchilada was tasty but lukewarm and the 2 beef flautas were warm but small. My order for fajitas was a huge disappointment. The shrimp & chicken with onions & peppers was lukewarm at best . The chicken was dry. I sent the food back . The waitress brought the food back not much warmer & said they could redo the whole dish if necessary. At this point my husband was close to finishing his meal. Great place all around! My fiancé and I went there today after the dunes and have never felt so welcomed in a restaurant/bar. We're in the process of moving from Chicago to Merrillville and we thought let's try near by places, and this is one of them!
