My experience at Top Notch was terrible, the waitress , Angie was curt, sarcastic, , snappy and honestly I felt she didn't want to serve us. She murmured while telling us , she would get us another waitress. She addressed mess Sir, and immediately responded "I didn't " after I said I'm not a sir.There was no reason for her altitude. I suppose she had a problem being questioned about the menu. To the white other customers she seemed not to have any issues but with the only three blacks this waitress was awful in her presentation. A simple family run diner. Clean. Decent prices. Large menu. I ordered once again takeout. My favorite entree: the breaded veal cutlet. It comes with mashed potatoes, a salad, choice of soup (I had the lemon rice) AND a dessert (I had the rice pudding). $16 total with tax. The salad is basic but fresh. I chose ranch dressing and it was fine. The soup is strong and hot. You can taste the lemon. It came with saltine crackers and two rolls. Very good. The breaded veal cutlet was HOT and covered in the best gravy. The potatoes were also great. Definitely recommend. Dessert was rice pudding. It came with a little whipped cream topping and cinnamon. This is my 11 year old daughter's review, "Cups were small and smelled metallic. I ate all my pasta in 2 bites (not enough pasta). The booth was not big enough. The service was not very attentive. The ambiance was nice but a little run down. Food tasted good. And that is the only positive review of this restaurant." This is your typical diner that hasn't changed much over the past 30 years. The breakfast wasn't great - the eggs were greasy, the skillet was lacking much taste but the pancakes were decent. The fact of the matter is that they are understaffed and the ladies are busting their butt trying to keep up with all the demands. Then we look over to see the host reading a newspaper at the entrance. Are you kidding me? The entitlement and lack of awareness is unreal. When my dad approached him about getting coffee he was apparently too good to get it himself and went to one of the drowning waitresses to have her attend to us, which defeated the point of what we were trying to convey. Visiting the area and my dad recommended this restaurant. It's a little country restaurant with comfort foods. It was very busy. It has about 30 tables I would estimate and there were plenty of servers. We were able to choose our own table and our server arrived quickly to offer coffee, Waters, whatever we would like to drink and menus were on the table when we were seated. The server was very nice and attentive the entire time. She quickly handled all of our requests and her assistant kept our cups full and plates removed when we were finished. The prices were the normal for these days - $10 to $20 per plate. I had the pork tenderloin which is different than I've had in other parts of the Midwest and it was tasty but it does not rate in the top of my experience. My dad had egg and potatoes which he said was very good. My sister had a Greek lemon chicken with rice which looked delicious. The portions were very large and we took half of our meals home. We started the meal with soup and my dad swears the navy bean soup is excellent but my sister insisted it was made with pinto beans. I had the lemon rice soup which was so sour I could not finish it. Overall a nice lunch. And would probably stop in again but it's not in the top restaurants in the area if you just passing through. read more

I have probably passed Top Notch Restaurant thousands of times because. Since I live close to two other restaurants within walking distance I go to the others. I am happy that I stopped in on Sunday. I was immediately greeted with a smile by the owners granddaughter Mia. When I entered it was like a blast from the past. There were so many people inside enjoying their meals. It is a Greek owned breakfast restaurant that has an amazing menu. The selections are great! While I sat at this retro counter, two longtime customers heard I had never been there and they offered their feedback and they spoke very highly about the restaurant. They provided me with some great recommendations. One of them also talked about the the excellent work ethics of the Owners. I had the pleasure of meeting one of the Owners Chris, as I was waiting for my meal and we had a nice chat. I learned about his background, and he brought me a cup of coffee, and I ordered a veggie omelette which came with potatoes & pancakes. I am very picky about my omelettes but this one was perfect! Service was poor in that my coffee cup was empty and nobody came around to see if I wanted more. On the other hand, I ordered two eggs over easy. I went there and i placed an order to go. Ordered roughly about 6 things and not even half were edible. Our gyros was literally so dark and burnt you couldn't bite through it. The pork tenderloin was flavorless and tough I'm not sure how anyone would think serving this food would be acceptable. The only thing i would recommend out of the place is the soup. Every server in the place was coughing like crazy that i just stood by the door to wait for my order. They were nice but i didn't want to get sick along with my order. The manager or owner not sure who he was but didn't want to do a single thing. I asked him to show me something and he told me to ask someone else. Since they no longer allow smoking the place is much cleaner, not that is was an issue before, but the lack of smoke and smell of cigarettes not accosting one the minute one crosses the threshold is nice. The food is good which sucks because everything else there isn't. Waitstaff is rude and snappy. It's not hard to split checks, no reason to be mean about it. You'd think with only 50% capacity you'd treat your customers better. Also, FYI, masks are completely ineffective if it isn't covering your mouth or nose. Perfectly delicious for what it is - greasy spoon diner. I had a croissant breakfast sandwich and my boyfriend had steak and eggs and both of us were STUFFED after eating. We had a great server, who looked like she's been in the game for years. She was quick, efficient, had tons of tables and never skipped a beat. All our food came out on time, was reasonably priced, and tasted delicious. There's tons of breakfast places lining Rt. 41, and lots of them having high waiting times (Sophias, Round the Clock, etc.) but this one had no wait (no clue why!) and served great food. I come here for the pork chop dinner, salad and the dinner rolls which are really good with butter. My kids always have fun here because the staff is very kid friendly. The kids always get their tenders. The crowd is older, the servers are old school. okay sorry..... I was back in town with my boyfriend last night, and we were hungry around midnight, and I said Let's Go to Top Notch! Times have changed sadly. First, it is so outdated, and not in the old fashioned charming way, just 1980 outdated.. And now, since Indiana has gone non-smoking, you now have to walk into a tunnel of smoke outside of the doors of customers, including the manager/owners?/ and servers. And these horrible uniforms you are making your staff still wear should be a criminal act! Now here it is. Coffee - good, server- pleasant, pancakes- heavy as bricks. We actually watched the other server take a whip cream can and fill her mouth up with it, set it down and do it again in 5 minutes and then lick her fingers and then smile at the guy at the counter! At that point we knew Time To Go! So sad that I had great memories of this place back in the day, and pretty much humilated and kept apologizing to my boyfriend that I was talking this place up. I chose Top Notch over The Steer and Round the Clock. Change your ways, modernize your restaurant, and train your staff on food safety or I will not be surprise to see your doors closed the next few years. He never takes a moment to stroll through the dining room to ask how things are. He stands and stares as though he wants everyone to leave and not come back. I travel for a living and try to find places that are locally owned. Most of my reviews are for hotels/motels and it is rare for me to write a review for places to eat unless they are exceptionally good or on the rotten side of bad. This place is on the exceptionally good side. Stopped in on a Friday night, seated immediately, and it was obvious that there were several 'regular customers' enjoying their meals. My mind had to to a double take at the selections....SO MANY, and each one sounded so good. Even better, had to do another double take to see the prices. A full turkey dinner meal for 9.95. WHAT? I mean a FULL meal, drink, soup AND salad, potato, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, warm roll, and dessert. I wish I had taken my phone in so you could see the menu selection and the prices. I ordered the turkey dinner, had the soup to eat in and the meal to go. Also ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich for tomorrows dinner. It came with coleslaw, and fries. 7.95. Of course I wasn't expecting much of a serving, but the serving size could feed two on the turkey dinner, and from what I saw of other patron's meals coming through all their portions are large. Got the stuff back to the hotel and the flavor was out of this world, as was the lemon rice soup that I had while there. Don't walk, RUN to Top Notch for you meal. The price is fantastic......the food huge in portion and the flavor......makes the mouth sing! read more
