Byway Brewing in Hammond has become our official halfway stop on the bike path--because nothing says "fitness" like earning a burger and a beer mid-ride. ‍ The food's always good, the beer's even better, and dining al fresco hits the spot every time. Perfect pit stop before pretending we're riding for exercise again!

We found Byway Brewing at the Pierogi Fest in Whiting. They had a food truck with some tasty offerings. Prices reasonable. Staff super helpful and upbeat. Bonus points for the unique poutine pierogis.

I did a take out order of a howler of Stosh with a lonestar sandwich with the potato chips. The Stosh is an unfiltered polish Pilsner and the howler is a double pint. I drank about a pint waiting for my food, less than 15 minutes. I like this polish Pilsner, it's the first one I have ever had. It's a little hoppy but not overpowering. The lonestar sandwich was very good, I did have a slight craving for a hint of sweet when eating it. The home made chips are fantastic, cooked perfectly. I think the seasoning is Tajin based, it is amazing, like they should consider selling their seasoning blend.

It was very disappointing visiting Byway a few weeks ago. I loved their OG burger last time I came and unfortunately I did not get to try the Gamma 7 at the time since the menu has rotated. Instead of getting the delicious OG burger, I wanted to try the Incandescent Aporia. It was a bit of a pricier dish and sounded really good as I love udon noodles. Unfortunately, I ended up feeling extremely ill and throwing up after forcing it down. It was like if someone poured an entire bottle of store bought sauce all over it. I had others try it and they said it tasted like a Salisbury steak TV dinner. And they did not use udon noodles... when udon was the reason why I ordered it. I didn't want to waste money so I did what I could to eat it. I should have just not eaten it. My friend got the January sandwich of the month. We thought it looked good at first but he said it was so dry that he ate around 1/5th of it then didn't even want to take it home. And my boyfriend's flatbread barely had any flavor, which was actually shocking since it looked like it would with how colorful it was. It was a pretty disappointing experience which was very unfortunate. The only saving graces were the poutine and my other friend's OG burger. I was so grateful he let me take a bit of his burger to help me not be absolutely miserable. The only reason this is not a 1 star is because of the delicious OG burger and poutine. Steering away from the OG burger was the biggest mistake I made that night, and the few bites I had made sure I knew that.

Always an easy favorite for a great meal! I'm actually not a big beer drinker so I can't even comment on that, haha. But the food here is awesome! We were in recently with a huge group and they made it so easy to order and the service was great! We had the poutine and I had a flatbread. Everything was delicious! I know I'll always get a great meal here!

Really nice open seating area inside and outside! I was seated right away and explained the difference beverages and menu options. I vouched for the chicken wings and the Oat Street Porter. I didn't want to eat too heavy so far away from home. I would qualify the place as a winner from prior experience with different breweries. Oh! It was really clean!

Birra quesadilla - Will for sure get again!

In town for work and had a fantastic meal! I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Service was super quick and friendly. The quesadilla was way better than expected. Smash burger was a solid burger. I for sure thought the house chips were going to be basic....but these were great! All in all, very happy with the meal and would recommend!

I'm giving 4 stars because the BEER was the star. For reference, I also ordered carryout, so I didn't dine-in. I think the dine-in experience would be a better option - it was a beautiful evening, there are tables outside under a canopy and some in the sun, if that's your thing. They had the cornhole game and live music. Inside the main room, it's a bit loud. There is a large bar with plenty of seating around it. I do believe they offer event space too - because where the brewry is located there is tons of open space and great lighting there. The menu is pretty extensive, I checked online and ordered over the phone. The person who took my order was super nice and informative. She gave me options as I was choosing items. Even talked me into the 4-pack of beer instead of the "Crowler" which is 32 oz., but a few dollars more. The parmesan fries could have been crispier. Maybe some larger shreds of parmesan, it appears it was just the wood pulp kind that comes in the shaker bottles. Plus it up Byway - use real stuff and shred it on top with big flakes. The wings were interesting because they were different sizes. There was nothing uniform about them. The taste was good. Not crispy enough. The slaw wasn't that great. But to be fair, I'm not a fan of slaw anyway. Let's talk Pork Loin Sandwich - the Ballbricker! I've had plenty of Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches - plenty - this ranks pretty HIGH on my list. It was definitely oversized, seasoned well, the pickles were fantastic they put on the sandwich - the weird thing is they advertise a Brioche bun, and I ended up with two bottoms - no top for me. Weird. It was pretty darn good! The service here appeared to be great...as I did carry out - I hate that you always have to "go to the bar" to pick up your food. It's another wait in my opinion, when some places just have your food near the door so you can "carry out" quickly. But - the bartender was cool. I tipped him. Now - the beer was EXCELLENT. I don't like mainstream beers - I love the micro breweries. I also like fruit beers. So I tried the "Orange is the new Wheat" and it is definitely a "wheat" beer, but very tasty and refreshing. I would get it again. They also served me the 4-pack chilled. It wasn't COLD, just chilled. So I put the others in my beverage fridge for later. I would go back - definitely. This time I will bring friends and we will try a flight along with some additional appetizers and entrees. Hang out outside listening to the music and play some cornhole - make an evening out of it!

I really enjoyed this place. The sour beer was very tasty. They also have a pretty good menu too. It's great for groups as they have picnic table style seating. Also, they have a great patio and some outside space that's probably nice I'm warmer weather. I'll be back!!

Best French dip/roast beef sandwich ever anywhere! Perfect amount of spice with Giardiniera added on top ... the chips were homemade and not too greasy. I had the fish tacos with mango salsa which was fresh and full of flavor.

    Are there any vegetarian options?

    Is your patio dog friendly?

At the current time they are not allowing dogs. I asked when I was there two weeks ago. They said that is also unlikely to change.

    Is it dog-friendly?

I figured since 3 Floyd's Brewing is not really open to the public, per se. And the Dark Lord Day…read moreis its own entity I would specifically review it on its own merits. I must preface by saying I have wanted to do this event for a long, long time. But alas work has made it nearly impossible to do. Time becomes a commodity as you get older. It's do or die. The latter is inevitable. Not knowing how this festival works I studied Yelp reviews. I joined a DLD Facebook to find helpful tips. Both were extremely helpful. It is basically a musical festival, a giant bottle share and people dressed as warlocks all in one. There are three levels of admission: VIP Deluxe, GA and one with just for the concert. Depending on your budget each has it pros and cons. Me, my suggestion is to get the VIP Deluxe. It is crazy expensive and goes fast. However, I believe it is the best option. So I got the regular GA, which is $200 hundred bucks. You get 4 DLD variant stouts and admission to the concert. Maybe to the casual festival goer this will seem alot. Once you get here you will experience something unique. A week or two before the event happens they mail you wristbands. Do not put them on. There is a QR Code which you have to attach a credit card to. It is a cashless event. It's just like the Sail and Sign on a Cruise Ship in theory. As you buy drinks, merch or food you use the wristband to pay for them. A quick few pro-tips. Do not bring lawn chairs. Know that you are going to stand most of the time. Before I go on, let me rewind a bit. The parking situation is not dire but get there as early as you can. Local businesses offer parking for $20 bucks. We were able to find parking within walking distance to the festival. Here came the kicker for me, they had a guy doing a DLD tailgate party. It's like a normal tailgating party but with free to sample beers. He had things I have only heard of in tales of lore. My next pro-tip is to bring a small plastic sample glass. Once you arrive staff is there to put on your wristbands for you. And they check all ID'S. You are allowed to bring in some beer and an unopened bottle of water. Bring the water! I will say the logistics and mechanics of it run really smoothly. The staff are extremely super friendly and helpful. Having only seen 3 Floyd's in pictures it is more vast than I had imagined. Every nook and cranny was filled with something of interest. There were tap spaces everywhere. Vendors. Food trucks. In the center of it all was a Viking Court, with the largest bottle share I have ever seen. They had a thing called, "The Wheel of Death." For twenty-five bucks you spin a wheel similar to "Wheel of Fortune." You can win beer, merch or even your name etched onto a keg. I thought about doing it but the wait was already a couple of hours in. Most of your time here will be spent standing in line for something. For beer. Food. Restrooms. The merch lines were insane. Fortunately for you when this happen there are lots of people dying to share their brought in beer. I will say a great deal of the drinks I had were from beer sharers. For the most part festival goers were friendly. However, there is finite seating here. Which makes the VIP Deluxe option more enticing. After a while I wanted to sit somewhere. Since seating is sparce I saw groups monopolizing available benches. For example a bench that could fit ten people was instead filled with 3 harboring stuff. You would eye a bench and people would place a hat, a bag to prevent you from sitting with them. I get it. My biggest critique is that they need to let festival goers bring in folding chairs. For example I saw people in various stages of drunkenness: stumbling or even passed out. Letting people bring in folding chairs would allow them to cool down. It would also create a more laid back vibe. It certainly has the space to do so. Quickly before I write more volumes the musical entertainment is extreme metal. The dance floor is filled with moshers and headbangers. If you are expecting bossa nova jazz you will be disappointed. By and large I did enjoy this event. Will I recommend it to someone? Absolutely. Will I do it again? Probably not. It's a young person's world now. The Dark Lord Day is a very, very unique experience. And I believe we should fill our lives with them. Was that a dude dressed as a wizard at the festival or was it in fact Gandalf? After a few stouts you won't know the difference.

I returned here with the son on 5-18-2024 for 2024's Dark Lord Day.  It was actually the first time…read moreI've made it here for the annual and coveted event as the only other time I came for Dark Lord was with him for an atypical Covid era pickup only event. The event is pretty pricey and it's definitely a beer geek special as it costs $200 for admission plus rights to a tote bag containing one 2024 Dark Lord and three Dark Lord variant bombers (each 22 oz).  This year was the 20th anniversary Dark Lord Day and they've been doing it for a long time and it's very organized, at least as far as making sure you're credentialed for admittance.  It will still cost $15 - $30 to park nearby, but they do have some shuttle buses to remote parking locations.  We got there at 9am for our pre-purchased Group A designated time slot but later in the day, there will be more people, with more lines for everything, including the few foodstands on site.  I can't imagine any lines for port-o-potties though as there were millions of those and that's a good thing.  Heavy metal bands were scheduled to play from 1:30pm to 8pm, but we didn't stay for any of that.  I just had a nice 4 oz serving of the 2024 Dark Lord (for $10) while we were there and then we left with the goods.  We stood briefly in a line next to a couple that flew in from San Jose CA just for the event.  One staffer also told me a guy came in from Italy supposedly just for this event.  I really did enjoy the people-watching of these quite serious beer geeks, and that was probably the real highlight of visiting in person on this special day.  My only advice if you're going to a Dark Lord Day for any length of time on a sunny day is to bring a hat, sun screen, and a designated driver!
