I had not been aware of Pretty Penny until I saw that it was hosting a leg of the Ardbeg ( Scotch ) Masters of Smoke tour in Phoenix. We decided to check it out and what a great decision that was. Relatively small and intimate, Pretty Penny has a nice bar area and comfortable table seating for perfect outing or date night. We were promptly welcomed in even though we were early for our reservation; granted - it wasn't busy but still a great impression. I'm terrible with names but our server was outstanding. He outlined the menu items and presented us with the specials that were related to the Ardbeg tasting event. What really stood out for us was the meticulous detail he showed with the table placings. Everything was laid out "just-so", very neat and precise, which wasn't necessary and seemed too much for the venue but let me say, it was amazing and refreshing. The menu is largely seafood-based but ever-changing. I chose the outstanding Octopus Tostada while my better half decided on the Beef Tartare, which were both delicious. We split the Oishi Oyster Duo that was part of the event menu. Quite nice. Service and ambiance were just great. Attentive without being overly intrusive. Our server was really engaging and explained a lot of the philosophy and techniques of the drinks, etc. Wonderful spot. The chef took the time to see if all was good, too. The only minor thing I would mention is that the overhead music was a bit too loud. Other than that minor detail, it was an absolutely perfect evening out. This was a nice hidden gem on Roosevelt. This place had a really good vibe and a small intimate setting. I went with a group of five and we decided to share all the food. I was a little sad that they didn't have the oysters since that's what made me pick the place in the first place. We ended up getting the octopus and smoked trout which was very tasteful, however I wish they brought us more bread. The lamb briyani was good but it's not anything like traditional briyani. The cocktails here are so delicious. A lot of them are milk washed so they are very smooth. I loved the beer tartare and lamb ragu pasta. The pasta had some heat from the pepper but it was balanced perfectly with the tender meat. The beer tartare was very fresh and the bread complemented it very well. I want to gatekeep this place so it doesn't get too busy, but I need y'all to know how incredible it is. 10/10 recommend - honestly one of the best meals I've had in recent memory. We sat at the bar and had great service & conversation from everyone from the chef to server. Chef shared his inspirations behind the dishes and in depth details about the ingredients, which I love. "Le Prawn James" special - 10/10! Squid ink pasta served inside one is the biggest prawns I've seen, in an uni butter sauce. Absolutely incredible Octopus tostada - 10/10! Great texture contrast between the crunchy tostada & perfectly cooked tender octopus. Duck carpaccio - 9.5/10! Very flavorful with a plum sauce & ginger accents. A little light in quantity IMO. Uni & oyster special - 7/10. The only dish I wasn't just totally blown away by. I thought the portion was pretty small given the price tag and was a little bummed the seafood tower is only available on weekends now. My wife and I walked in here during "First Friday" in October. We were visiting phx from Philly. The host/owner? greeted us and, as he sat us, chatted us up about his favorite places in Philly. Very friendly. The food was really, really good. The service was paced really nicely. My only gripes were that the music was too loud, which seemed to cause the party of four at bar to be REALLY loud with their conversation and laughing. One woman was so loud with her shrieking laughter that the entire restaurant stopped to see what was happening more than once. read more

This place is amazing, top to bottom. Every dish was outstanding and the service was incredible. I want to talk about the service in particular - my wife has an unusual allergy to garlic. I knew their menu has limited items and changes from time to time, so I reached out through Yelp to ask if they had options without garlic. They responded and let me know that they had non-garlic options, but not which ones (tough to do when their menu changes periodically). Fortunately, my wife liked most everything that was described on the menu, so we figured we'd find something that worked for her. Here's where Pretty Penny went above and beyond. The day of our reservation, Brenon reached out to me via text to let me know exactly which dishes they could make that evening without garlic - he wanted to make sure there would be something for my wife. Admittedly, there wasn't a lot, but it turned out to be exactly the dishes she most wanted anyway. But that act of going above and beyond meant so much. Wait, there's more to this story - in making my wife's main dish, they accidentally put a sauce on top that had garlic and had to start over. Everything is made fresh, so this meant her main dish was very delayed. Fortunately, we already had a couple of small plates so we were ok, but the waiter (Sean) was so concerned about it. He came out regularly to apologize and inform us of the status and then comped us dessert to make up for the delay. He didn't have to do that - we hadn't complained and we hadn't asked for anything, but this shows you the kind of place Pretty Penny is - they go above and beyond to make sure their customers are happy with their experience. And we left VERY happy. Every dish was amazing. We started with the hamachi crudo which was so light and fresh, with a nice spicy edge, and the Thai curry ceviche - I was lucky to get the last one available that evening and I'm so glad. It was unbelievably good - oh, I should mention that we wanted to lick every dish clean, the sauces were so flavorful. My wife had the branzino with a non-garlic based sauce and she raved about it. My only misstep was ordering the leek risotto. It was good, but it was too heavy for one person (my wife couldn't eat it due to the garlic). By about halfway through the plate, I wished someone would help me eat it, yet I still ate THE WHOLE THING and wanted to lick the plate when I was done. But it filled me up and left me with little room to try something different. That was my misstep - Sean had even warned us that the plates are more filling as you go down the menu. I'm not local, but if I go back at some point I would probably try the chicken - that looked great and Sean even mentioned it has one of his favorite sauces. For dessert we had the matcha tiramisu and the budino. Both were great, but I'll give the edge to the matcha tiramisu. Such flavor and such a unique approach to tiramisu! Bottom line - this is a place that goes above and beyond with respect to service, their food is outstanding, and the ambience is nice (if a little noisy and cramped). Will revisit in a heartbeat the next time I'm in Phoenix. read more

Celebrating our anniversary, my husband and I opted for surf and turf. The beautifully seasoned tomahawk steak was grilled to perfection. The lobster was a giant beast of a shellfish, cooked in an amazing buttery sauce and topped with a splash of lemon juice, encapsulating everything we love about lobster. Served with a side of mashed potatoes and broccolini, it was all *chef's kiss*. For the main I asked the line and they both suggested the half chicken with the Chinese broccolini, partnered this with the Red Apple Old Fashioned that was fat washed with sticky rice. My wife and swing by just after happy hour on a Friday without reservations. We were able to get seated immediately as they were not busy yet. We received a rundown on drinks, the menu and specials. Pretty Penny's take on an old fashioned was great with a mix of bourbon and scotch and fermented strawberry juice. The presentation was great with salted chocolate on the large cube.
