Potomac Taphouse is a brewery in Ashburn, VA near the George Washington Campus. There's plenty of free parking in the lot in the complex and there's both covered outdoor seating and indoor seating. The ambiance inside can be described as a casual sports bar, good for big groups and chilling. There's lots of TVs around the restaurant, playing different sports channels. Also, their happy hour is between 3-6pm every Monday-Friday. They have an impressive selection of beers and ciders, both imported and locally sourced. The service was also great - our waiter was really nice and funny! I ordered the beer flight, which comes with 4- 5oz flavors. I asked our waiter to choose and he brought me a blackberry and blueberry lemon cider which was sweet and delicious. The sweet potato fries were a good pairing, but were a small portion and not great for sharing. Also, the Cajun Pasta took a while to come out, but was sooo flavorful. There was a good ratio of pasta to sauce to sausage to shrimp. It was a beautiful portion, but a little expensive for a sports bar. Overall, I would recommend coming here with a group of friends for a happy hour or to drink casually. read more

Recently, I was looking at my Facebook feed and saw an article that talked about Potomac Taphouse changing up things. They had a new menu that debuted this month. We took a look at it and thought it looked good. So...we headed there for a Saturday dinner. Upon entering, we noticed that there was no host stand. A server called out to us and said "sit wherever you want", which we did. I'm never comfortable with places that have you sit where you want. If no one notices that a customer came in and sat down, it could take a while until you get noticed. The same server approached us and gave us menus. We had noticed that the online menu mentioned sandwiches. There were none listed on the menus we got. When the server came back, she said sandwiches were on the lunch menu and she got us that menu. For starters, we got drinks. I had a "virgin mojito" mocktail while my husband tried to order a beer (I forget which one) but they were out. The server recommended one called "Crazy Pils Beer", which he agreed to try. For dinner, I ordered a BLT and for my side "old bay French fries". My husband got the "Potomac Taphouse burger", also with "old bay French fries". The place struck us as understaffed. Our server was also doubling as a bartender. Fortunately, only a few people were sitting at the bar. She mixed up my mocktail. It was bitter as I think she may have left out the "simple syrup". My husband liked his beer. The kitchen was very slow despite the fact that there weren't many customers Here's why I can't give them a higher rating --- When the food came, the fries had an awful smell that was really off putting. We reluctantly tasted them and noticed that there was no old bay seasoning at all---just bland fries. Neither of us could figure out what the awful smell was. I had to push them aside while I ate my BLT. The BLT was fine---it had good portions of lettuce and tomato, plus the amount of bacon and mayo was decent. My husband thought his burger was okay. He was pleased that there was onion on it. After our food was dropped off, the place got busier so our server couldn't be as attentive. We never got to point out the awful smelling fries. Needless to say, we won't return. Those memories of the fries will stay with us. read more

Great atmosphere. Sat at the bar since I was by myself and the bartender was great! I got the salmon on a plank with mashed potatoes and green beans. The salmon was excellent and the green beans too. Very conflicted and I've been here three times. I have some observations: staff was good, helpful and they worked. The place was clean. Bathrooms clean. Nice outdoor seating. Extensive beer menu ( although I thought beer pricing was inconsistent. Some seemed too expensive some value.). Smoke old fashioned was super! Now the food: bruschetta good but only 5 pieces making it harder to share. The wings were severely over cooked. I also mentioned the wings being over cooked and I was looked at like a weirdo. What can I say here.....I so wanted to give them more because they are so nice, but I need to be honest, so here we go. Plus. Happy hour prices on drinks and apps, incredibly good. Drinks for $6, big plus. Server and Manager could not had been nicer. Cons. Big table of 12 had them overwhelmed, service was extremely slow. My wife had 2 bites of her burger, and was done. Said it just was terrible tasting. My salad was okay, not great. Will not be back, will not give them a second chance, too many other restaurants to choose from around here. This was a karaoke place a few years back and is now a taphouse. I went with a friend for happy hour. The place is dark inside, which is ok, but was disturbingly quiet on a wednesday happy hour. I think there were 1-2 other customers. Beer selection is quite large, but for whatever reason, happy hour tightly limits your choice, which kind of defeats the purpose if you came to try beers. The beer I had was decent. We ordered wings which were ok. The music was quite loud, which made having a conversation quite challenging. The large, mostly empty place gave off a somewhat sad vibe of desperation which I can see reflected in the empty seats and in the eyes of the staff. The staff are pleasant, if not overly attentive, but I can imagine working here must have its own challenges. Not sure what needs to happen here, but the status quo is not going to help matters. I wanted to like this place. Honestly the inside is nice and so are the staff... food... not so much. I ordered what was on one of the pictures , steak, mashed potatoes and salad. The salad was nothing like the picture... this was a mixed greed with onions and a tiny bit of cheese (tasted terrible) mashed potatoes were super bland and the steak was very sub par. The happy hour is amazing! It goes to 6:30 which is terrific. They have a large selection of drinks on the happy hour menu - and they are not just ordinary glasses of wine and rail booze. The cocktails range from $4 to $8. My friend had the pineapple sage martini and I had the cinnacreamon. Both were $7 and really delicious. We also saw them make the smoked old fashioned (with real smoke) and the hibiscus sparkler (really sparkled). Very cool things to try next time, The apps range from $6 to $10 - again, with a large selection. We had bacon jalapeño boats ($6), steak bites ($8), and calamari ($10). They were all fabulous. I went for happy, which has great deals! They only had one bartender who also acts as the waiter too so service is spotty. I loved my prickly pear margarita, but the food wasn't the best. I don't know if it's the oil they use or what but the fried food just had an "off" taste to it. I thought it was just the tots but I tried my friend's mozzarella bites as well & it had that same distinctive unwanted flavor. I wasn't a fan of the wings either, so I'd recommend coming for the happy hour drinks but skip the food. read more

Warning: Potomac Taphouse is still on "soft opening" after about a month of being open. So take my review with a grain of salt, though that is the only reason this is two stars and not one. We arrived, some confusion, ordered drinks (great beer list!), server disappeared. 20 minutes went by before he came back. There is more to this, but our drinks took about 30 minutes and looked nice. Ordered food, no changes to standard menu items. It took ~1hr for the food to come out. Burger was well done, and just fine in quality/taste, pre-made looking patty with nothing super interesting about it. Ordered sweet potato fries as my side which came out soggy and not properly cooked (some still hard), mashed potatoes for others were less mash and more glue like. All sides were completely cold so we can only assume a kitchen timing issue. Let the server know, with the understanding it was a soft opening so we were ok with the status as long as they are trying to make it better. He apologized and said the manager would give us a 25% discount. Staff issue and "problems in the kitchen" was the excuse. Eventually someone else, we think the manager, came over to apologize and he threw the kitchen staff under the bus rather than taking personal responsibility. Gave us cards for a "50% discount" on a future meal which we thought was a good way to go. Then it went off the rails, they showed up unanounced with new sides, which should have been awesome. Sweet potato fries arrived and they were properly cooked but completely unseasoned and not sweet. Mashed potatoes arrived, hot, but were more glue like than before. Inedible. We were still "ok" with it though and would have given a decent review, but then we looked at the cards we were given, 10$ off 50, not 50%. Then got the bill and "the manager decided to change from 25% to 15%, sorry" is what the server said to us. If it was due to the sides being delivered, we were not informed and didn't know they were trying to re-fire them, changing after offer is not appropriate. We explained that we were told something else. The server agreed, but said it was out of his hands. I let him know we would be documenting this and he shrugged. There is more, including an accidental but hard to remove double charge and servers not paying attention to their customers/slow but thats ok for a soft opening (though I would say 1wk is normal, 1month is not). That being said, the miscommunication about the coupon, lack of ownership of the issues, and changing from 25% to 15% is not acceptable. There are two bars in the same shopping center already, both with decent options. PT needs to define their own identity, service level, and cuisine *now* to survive if they don't have funding for 1-2 years of running to figure it all out. I hope they take this review in kind and improve, as there is room for another concept, but not a basic run of the mill bar with anything other than outstanding food. If so, we may return. As it stands we will not. read more

Probably the most awkward restaurant experience ever. The place was empty, the bartender was also the chef. Ordered an orange crush, received a screwdriver. ALL cocktails were $10 on HH except for those. Nachos lacled flavor and were cold. Wings were okay. The poor server was incredibly awkward and made us feel uncomfortable . Just a heads up--my group of 7 was charged a 27% tip, even though the restaurant's standard gratuity for parties of 6 or more is supposed to be 18-20%. I wasn't told about the extra charge, and it felt a bit sneaky. Definitely check your bill before you pay. I called the restaurant and spoke to the owner--he was very apologetic and said he would remove the tip completely, we'll see if it happens. It's a good idea to double-check your bill. read more

Fantastic new restaurant that serves FRESH food. We spoke with the manager who explained the meat is ordered from a local butcher, I.e. the meat isn't frozen. Our meals were served hot and we could tell the asparagus and house salad were as well. HIGHLY recommend the 5 pepper wings. Don't be fooled by the name, the 5 pepper sauce is not spicy. The service is very friendly and welcoming! And the home made Ice Cream is incredible !! Oh btw, the craft beer selection is awesome too! read more

The onion soup was awful. It seemed watered down and bland. The mixed vegetables I ordered turned out to be peppers, onions and mushrooms. On another dish The sauce on the asparagus was so salty it could not be eaten. The sirloin steak was good. However, the rib eyes were thin (was it 33 oz?) And were served just warm. Had an awesome time at Potomac Taphouse watching the Packers playoff game! The service was exceptional very attentive and friendly. They had a huge range of beer, wine and cider options. And all of their cocktails are made with fresh fruit - the strawberry colada was a standout. We had a Hockey tournament and contacted Potomac tap house and they were able to accommodate 45 people on short notice. The food was great. The service was sluggish but they did tell us in advance that they only have a small staff . Cannot hold this against them . The burgers were very good and old bay fries were tasty . In town visiting the kids (adult kids) and stopped in to catch the game and dinner. Great bear selection and good wine options - I love a good Malbec! We ended up ordering sandwiches since we'd had burgers a couple times this week. Rueben was good and I had the Turkey club which was great. Instead of chips we got sweet potato fries and regular fries. While the sweet potato were good, highly recommend the regular as they had old bay on them! Service was great - friendly and timely on a Saturday night. They were about to put the game we wanted on the TV, so it made for the perfect casual dinner! Burger done exactly as ordered and with fresh great tasting toppings and roll, fries are tasty, hot and with good texture, and I am from Philly and loved their Philly Cheesesteak.
