Went to this place over the weekend to stop by after an event. This place is located in a building with other different shops around. It's a small shop but so cute around it. There's space to sit outside and just relax as well. The place has a lot of open space. When we went it was somewhat busy. We got the new wave if im not mistaken which was a brown sugar Shaken Espresso with their special foam on top. I took a sip of it directly from the lid trying to get everything with the foam but I didnt like it as much as when I mixed everything. I really liked the drink mixed with the foam. Such a cute spot. I am curious of where they source their coffee from and I've read a little bit about how their techniques are inspired from Japan on how they make their coffee. But, would try other things on the menu as well. They also have pastries which I haven't tried yet.

Banana latte and chai tea latte
Vanessa T.

After seeing all the reviews, we decided to check out this roastery. I got their seasonal drink which was the banana latte and my husband got the chai tea latte. The banana was very light and didnt have much banana flavor. I also think the roast wasnt too strong and was a bit too light for me. It gave me a sour aftertaste too which i wasnt a fan of. My husband got the chai latte and that was really good. It was very creamy and smooth. Very refreshing on a hot day. The workers werent that friendly and their menu selection was minimal.

Almond Croissant

This place is located in a nice area with lots of seating. They're fairly busy on weekends so expect a bit of a wait. The staff is friendly and efficient. I ordered an oatmilk latte and almond croissant. Oatmilk Latte- Sweet and creamy with a good hit of espresso. A nice, hot drink when you're trying to wake up. Almond Croissant- Pastry is nice and fluffy with a light crisp outside. It has an almond custard filling inside that has a lovely flavor. You also get a topping of crunchy slivered almonds for extra texture. Great place for coffee and pastries!

Kyoto style Brewing

Ooh where do I start with Portola Coffee Roasters? For starters, I unexpectedly found this while looking for a cafe to work in. I enjoyed that here was Wi-Fi in this food court area of the plaza. Ordering and pick-up are fairly straightforward with their hanging and standing signs... impressive given its circular shop setup - they really thought this through! Coffee? Amazing! Their espresso is bold - not too acidic or sour - and captures the right amount of sweetness, nuttiness, and caffeine to make it a delectable afternoon pick-me-up. In addition to their caffeine is their teamwork; I've never seen baristas work so closely in a cramped space. All staff members juggled their downtime with efficiency to churn out drinks. And for any science geeks / chemists out there, their Kyoto brewing system was a sight to see, I'm definitely interested in trying a Kyoto cold brew next time! They're one of my favorite styles of coffee - tasty and aesthetically pleasing.

2 cans of basic "healthy" soda (8% real juice) which is mostly water were $9.70!

Really. Sadly. Nothing special. $9 for a 12 oz mediocre latte PLUS tip shoved in your face online. Ordered online. System prompts for tip %. Zero $0.00 tip is not an option. You have to click "other" and physically type in 0.00 Worse yet -- the coffee is bleh. A bit acidic. And served with lots of weird vibes and goth leftovers with a side of hipster wanna bee. No sense of urgency or give a crap from anyone behind the counter. And. The prices!!!! Omfg. The prices!! I've paid less for better coffee at sports events and airports. Why rip people off so much!?

Fall spice Latte
Maggie H.

The barista recommended the seasonal fall spice latte, which is the tastiest rendition of the PSL that I've ever had! They make their own sweet potato puree and top the drink off with this delicious marshmallow whip that I could eat a whole bowl of. Wish this was a year-round option so I could come back anytime for this. This latte was 8 dollars so prices are steep here, but service is quick and friendly. You can also order food/drinks from a few other spots around here, since this is set up as a higher-end food court.

Iced Matcha Tea Latte
Dan P.

Iced matcha latte - I got it unsweetened but I recommend getting it sweetened bc drink was very milky w subtle matcha flavor. Matcha not sour or bitter. Located in OC mix with lots of open space seatings and shops. Great study spot but didn't see much outlets. Decent WiFi, easy parking.

Iced vanilla latte, spinach artichoke danish
Michelle T.

Early morning pick up. Got an iced vanilla latte + spinach+artichoke danish. Both are very tasty. The vanilla latte looks really light but had a good kick of caffeine surprisingly. Good location with tons of parking, most likely will come back! I wanna try their matcha.

Maritza S.

They have the best espresso beans. I make my own lattes at home and having the right beans makes a huge difference. It's definitely worth the 25 minute drive.

Flat White
Adriana M.

I walked in around 8am and it wasn't too busy! Didn't have to wait in line long! They attend me very nicely! Service was friendly! I ordered a flat white and they got it out fast! I enjoyed my flat white!! The place is nice with a great seating area!

$30 total and is too expensive!!!

While the customer service is good. The coffee is subpar. I added an extra shot and still the coffee is pretty bland. The barista said to do 3 shots but I told her then a cup of coffee would be $13. I gave this place so many chances and it's not up to my taste. You can't even taste the coffee in the latte or the cappuccino. I don't want to give it a bad rating because everything is good except for the coffee.

Super cute location within an small indoor market. Has outdoor seating in courtyard. Quick and friendly employees! Had the banana cream latte which had an amazing flavor. Will be stopping by here again.

Service was fast. Ordered nitro cold brew, and I would say it was OK. Perhaps had high hopes given the place had solid 4.5 stars.

Ask the Community - Portola Coffee Roasters

Does this location accept Bitcoin payments?

Not that I'm aware of. Apple Pay yes

Does this place have vegan donuts? They had the best Portola coffee at Pacific City and I am so glad there's another close by :)

Yes, Portola has vegan donuts. I bought one yesterday.

Does anyone know when they plan on extending their hours back to normal? Kind of ridiculous how early they close now

Is decaf available?

Yes, Portola makes decaf drinks and has decaf roast beans for sale.

What's the difference between the flat brown and the mocha?

The mocha has more milk vs the flat brown having more of an espresso taste and less milk. My wife got the flat brown and I had a sip. It was pretty good but since I like their mocha so much....I can't switch lol

Are there outlets available for plugging in computers?

Unfortunately no. Seating area is kind of shared with other tenants in the Mix.

Do you carry oat milk?

Yes 🫡

Does Portola have wifi?

Yes but its insanely slow

What breakfast items are available now? do they still have donuts?

They no longer have warm foods. They do still have artisan pastries such as muffins, pop tarts, croissants, and a few cookies. I do not believe they have doughnuts.

Do they still wear lab coats? What happened to Theorem- is it closed for good?

No more lab coats. They've been gone for a couple of years. And Theorem is closed. They told me that it may become a food extension with with simple drinks. Will see....

Hands down some of the best coffee in OC. If you don't like sweet, don't get a drink with flavoring. Or ask them to adjust. Simple! If you want something yummy and different, try their seasonal menu. I have never once felt like staff was rude. Every interaction has been authentic and genuine. The best. Lastly, long lines happen because this place has grown A TON post-COVID. They're also in the same building as a church, so get there early on the weekend or sit in line and enjoy the atmosphere. There's a friendly crowd there. Thank you Lion & Lamb for being a consistent go-to since Covid. You guys rock.

For our drinks, we got two signature drinks: *lucky matcha* and *cookie butter latte* They're both on the sweeter side but still good. They live up to the name and description. You're able to taste the marshmallow in the matcha and the biscoff and cinnamon on the latte. For food, we got *avocado toast* The bread was very fresh, thick and moist. My favorite part was the pickled onions. I'd definitely get it again. And the *breakfast burrito* is okay. Nothing outstanding - they did tell us they get them made a day before and they warm up upon order.

Easy, friendly, familiar in the best way. I don't come in often enough, but every time I do it feels like I belong here. Jim, the proprietor, is a big reason why, welcoming from my first visit. Matt, pictured here, I see more often on my Saturday runs. He's present minded and clearly cares about his customers and his craft. That energy carries through the whole space. Great coffee is one thing, but great music seals the deal. Today Matt's playlist was from 1946, and it somehow fit perfectly. Relaxed, cool, curious. Also the latte he brewed was on point - rich, smooth, and the just-right temp. And he refilled my own three jars with whole beans, to help with my goal of sustainability. I originally found Wilson Coffee through my connection to Chris and Jessica, the former owners of Amis de la Terre, a zero waste shop that I (and their many followers) still miss. There's a shared spirit here. Community minded and intentional. I'm really glad this place exists. One thing you need to know is this place is small. Like I would say if you could fit six people in there you'd be doing good. That being said, this place has some of the best coffee I've had! Most big name corporate coffee places Overkill the roasting of the beans. That makes coffee bitter and almost screaming from milk and sugar. I ordered a latte, and it was one of the smoothest coffees I have had in my life.. Plus the atmosphere is very laid-back and cool, you definitely don't feel like you need to have a tie to come in here, or spend a lot of money. The coffee is very well priced, and just a general cool place space to hang. Bottom line? If you are a coffee fanatic, and getting tired of the big corporate chains out there, you would do well to check out Wilson Coffee Roasting Company.
