Went on a Sunday about an hour before close and there was still a significant line. Luckily, you order at the counter and then seat yourself. I ordered the spicy Ceasar and made it into a wrap which wasn't particularly delicious but was light and enjoyable. It's a great place to catch up with a friend.
We're visiting from the Bay Area and somehow ended up at Salty Horse during their birthday week celebration, which was such a fun surprise! We even got a free embroidered bandana, which was such a cute touch. We ordered the steak and eggs with the birthday cake latte, along with the ube waffle and chicken, and everything was honestly immaculate. The food was so well done, and we loved everything we tried. The restaurant is set up more like a coffee shop with a mix of counter and table seating. You order and pay first, then find a spot to sit. The whole place has such a cool, laid-back western-inspired vibe that makes it feel really unique. I'd definitely recommend getting there early because as soon as it hit 9am, the line was literally down the block. Definitely adding Salty Horse to our list for our next visit. Such a fun find!
We arrived around noon on a Friday and there was already a line to order. There's a small parking lot behind the restaurant with maybe 10 spots, but it seemed like most people were street parking. One thing that confused me at first is that the actual entrance faces the street, so if you park in the back lot, you'll need to walk around to the front. You order first and get a number, then find your own table. Almost all the seats were taken when we visited, but we got lucky and a table opened up right as we finished ordering. The staff was kind and quickly cleaned it for us, and our food came out a little over 10 minutes later. We ordered the JH Breakfast Burrito and Skirt Steak. The burrito was solid and packed with filling, and I especially liked the sauces that came with it. The Skirt Steak was pretty good too, although it wasn't particularly memorable for me. The fries were a highlight though. They were perfectly salted and crispy. Overall, I enjoyed our experience and everything we had was good. It does seem like this place can get pretty packed, and while I'd happily come back with a reasonable wait, I'm not sure the food stood out enough for me to wait a long time during busier hours.
Great spot! Even with the crowd, a mellow yummy vibe once you got thru the ordering gauntlet. Drinks: I got their Hawaiian Cowboy on ice -the combo of honey and nutty maple milk was very tasty! I also got to sip the Desert Glaze, and the Blue Whale smoothie, both delicious. Food: came out honestly quicker than expected given the lunch time crowd, I got a plain old cali burrito, and it was delicious! My son got the breakfast version and it was fun try both, the pastor in the brekkie burrito was very tasty. I stole some fries from his girlfriend who got the turkey focaccia sandwich. Nicely crisp fries. The outdoor patio was a delightful spot, and tho crowded, we split a big table with other parties and everyone was friendly. Oh and Happy Birthday Salty Horse!, we saw hats and birthday cake :)
I wasn't a huge fan of the Philly Cheesesteak. Overall, it was a little bland and boring. The steak was plentiful, that for sure. Although I felt it was a little under-seasoned. The cheese was not really melted into the steak. There could have been more cheese. I didn't really get the cheese and steak flavor combo. Green Bell Peppers don't add much flavor. Overall I was happy with my food. Although, I don't think I will be coming back here for the Cheesesteak.
My friend recommended this spot for lunch just before yoga. It is in the neighborhood and there is plenty of parking in the residential area. It is such a cute cafe filled with indoor and outdoor seating. You order first and then get a table. It is so simply decorated and nicely situated. I ordered a phili cheesesteak and the pink sunset smoothie. My friend got the spicy caesar salad. The smoothie was refreshing and a great start to my meal. The phili cheesesteak was great and the bread did not get soaked. There was plenty of cheese and meat, as well as bell peppers. It was a great sandwich. The salad was a good choice as well. I definitely want to come back and try other items here. The customer service was friendly too.
OC needed more good brunch spots, so I'm glad we have Salty Horse! There always seems to be a line here, so try to get there early. Went at 9am on a Saturday and there was already a line out the door. "Steak and Eggs': loved the flavor of the steak, it was cooked perfectly! Eggs are cooked your way and it comes with avocado and a sourdough slice as well. 'Hawaiian Cowboy: coffee flavor wasn't that strong, it almost tasted watered down, and there was this floraly taste that I didn't expect Breakfast options are delicious, love the portion sizes (definitely will have leftovers), and they have such a cute and cozy outdoor seating area! I will say tho I'm kind of disappointed with the drinks here, and I've tried both their coffee and matcha....but I would recommend this place for their food!

Tried salty horse for the first time and I will be back. I got there around 9:30 AM which was perfect because there was no line. I ordered the steak and eggs, berries and cream Matcha, and the cookie dough banana bread. My total was about $45. Steak & eggs: 8/10; these portions were big and perfect. The steak had flavor. Tater tots were crispy. Sourdough bread was soft but crunchy on the outside. Eggs were over easy. Berries & cream matcha: 8.5/10; I actually really enjoyed this Matcha. Not sure why it came in a smaller cup than what my cousin ordered, but maybe because I said light ice? I think that is something that should have been mentioned to me that I would get a smaller cup. Otherwise, I liked this matcha a lot. Cookie dough Banana bread: 9/10; this was so good, so soft, so fresh. The only thing I wish is that I would be able to taste more of the cookie dough. I was a bit confused where the cookie dough was at in this banana bread. There were times where I did taste it, but I wasn't too sure. However, it did have lots of flavor and I would probably get the banana bread alone. Overall, I would return. There was a line formed outside around 10:30 AM, so I definitely recommend getting there early. This was even on a Tuesday morning. So it seems like the line forms no matter the day.
While visiting the OC area, a local friend brought my wife and me to Salty Horse. Coming from the Midwest, I really enjoyed the coastal, beach-house-inspired design--the space is bright, relaxed, and filled with lush greenery and succulents that give it a great vibe. As my benchmark drink, I ordered my usual flat white. Overall, it was decent, though the espresso pulled a bit more bitter than I typically prefer. I also ordered a house made lemonade just as a palette cleanser. My wife tried a drink I forgot about, and my friend got her usual matcha, both of which they enjoyed. I also picked up a bag of coffee from one of their local supplier roasters to try at home, nothing special. The only real downside is the parking situation. Spaces on-site are limited and street parking nearby can be fairly scarce, so prepare to hunt for a spot during peak hours. Still a neat local shop worth checking out for the atmosphere!

We got the JH breakfast burrito and campfire French toast and they were great. We also got For The Wanderer, which the description says comes with "a drizzle of olive oil", it was way more than a drizzle. That was our only complaint. The thick cut bacon was delicious. Will definitely be back to try different dishes. Love the atmosphere and decor, very coastal cowboy.
Finally tried the place I keep hearing rave reviews about! Upon arrival, we were shocked at the line out the door, but figured it was time to wait and see what the fuss was about. I ordered the peach iced tea and verde bowl. I saw truffle fries while waiting in line, so got those as well. The drink was presented well and tasted great. It's unsweetened which was perfectly refreshing. The verde bowl was amazing. I loved all the greens and it was light but satisfying. The fries were also wonderful. I definitely could not finish them on my own and shared with my friends. My friend ordered the tropical salad and loved it too! The environment is welcoming and fun! I wish we had more time to sit and enjoy. I'd go back, but on a day I have more time to enjoy the whole experience. We had a short window for a lunch break, so ended up having to order and eat back at our meeting.
I was really excited to try this place since I've seen it all over social media! The atmosphere was very lively on a Friday morning with a line almost out the door. There's limited seating inside and lots of seating outside. I ordered an iced Smores coffee off of their seasonal menu which ultimately ended up tasting like chocolate milk so that was disappointing since I was hoping for a nice caffeine boost. I also had the lox bagel which tasted fresh and the ingredients all tied together very nicely but it was a bit overstated with the sea salt crystals they use. At one point I had to scrape off some of the salt crystals just because there were so many and it became crunchy on my mouth. Overall it was a cool place to hangout but maybe if I go again I'd try a different drink and food choice!

Been seeing how popular this place was, so I decided to stop by to see if it's all true. Parking is kind of a disaster. Parking is in a residential, so good luck on those who cant parallel park. The establishment itself is super cute. Very well decorated and love the mix of beach costal vibes with the western look. Lots of merch and treats (high end, notable brands) on the side of the line to look at while you are waiting. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Plenty of spots and great for parties of 2-4. Also great it you are going solo like I did. Wait took about 15 minutes to order. Ordered the Guava Matcha and the Desert Glaze coffee drink with regular milk, less sweetness and less milk. Very easy going about the adjustments and were able to cater towards my request. Drinks took about 10ish minutes, quoted 10-15 minutes. Service was pleasant. Drinks were honestly ok. I had high hopes for their matcha cause I have heard and seen such great praises for it, but honestly mediocre at best. The flavor of guava does shine through and jt wasn't too sweet, but the matcha did not really have any matcha flavor or notes. The desert glaze was also just ok. Still a bit more of the milky and creamy side. The espresso was definitely a good quality but even with requesting less milk, I still feel like the milk overtook the whole drink. For taking up about 25-30 minutes to just get some drinks and not even food, I don't think it was worth the wait in line or searching of parking. Personally, glad to have seen and tried the drinks and might come back to try their food and a different drink, but probably won't come back for a while. Not worth my driving all the way out here to try. read more

Well this is unfortunate, updating my review from only a few months ago as it seems they made changes to their menu for the worst. Got rid of the thick pork belly bacon on the wanderer which was really unique and made the dish special. It is now expensive eggs bacon potatoes and toast. We were 4th to order and our food came out cold. Everyone's dish from the French toast the wanderer and the breakfast burrito all cold. Hopefully they see this and change back, also seeing my old picture of the banana bread it had a thick slab of icing when now it was almost piped on. Disappointing adjustments to the menu, it's now overpriced diner food. read more

Loved the ambiance here! Lots of outdoor seating. We came early on a Sunday after a hike but it did get busy after 9ish. Baked goods were delicious! Shared the banana bread and monster cookie. Steak and eggs meal was absolutely delicious! Got the Hawaiian cowboy latte and loved it. Will definitely come back! read more
Salty Horse had a long line on a weekend afternoon but it was consistently moving. Once we ordered and sat down, the food was brought out pretty quickly. I wasn't super impressed with the berries and cream matcha, the amount of matcha was minimal and the berries and cream flavor completely overpowered it. I enjoyed my focaccia sandwich, the bread was perfect but the sandwich could have used a bit more substance and sauce. Overall food presentation was excellent and so was the dining area. read more

Whenever I go to a coffee shop, only either the food is good and the drinks are ehh and vice versa but WOW Salty Horse really set the bar for me! I treated my cousin out for an early birthday celebration and we both got a matcha and we shared a sandwich! They have a special drink menu right now and i'll leave that for you guys to go see for yourself ;) The outside is a pretty Barn vibe and there is indoor and outdoor seating! (i recommend the outside area!) we got a number and the workers brought our food to us but for drinks we had go pick up inside after calling out our names The food was amazing and the workers were all friendly! Food and drinks: 10/10 I will definitely be coming back for the breakfast as it looks amazing!! (Parking is also a little hard so try to go early!) read more

Overall, Salty Horse was good - very very crowded and our food took a while to come out, however everyone working there was literally so nice. They all looked like they were having a good time, which I really feel like makes a difference as a customer! The space itself is so cute, picture a beach house with a country feel. To drink I had the berries and cream matcha and my friend had the hawaiian cowboy - I preferred the matcha! To eat we had the JH breakfast burrito and the foccacia turkey sando. Both were super yummy and filling - the portions were big! We were eyeing the person next to us enjoying the steak and eggs... will be ordering next time! read more

It is worth all the hype and the long lines. Food is great, tastes amazing and fairly priced. We went on Sunday Labor Day weekend. It was rainy but the line was still there. There are two tables in the outside patio that can be used during rainy days. One under the umbrella and one under a massive olive tree. I had the salty red breakfast burrito $18 with tots on the side. It came with three delish sauces. Will try again! read more

The line gets so long but the steak and fries were worth it in my opinion. My coffee was decent. I ordered a seasonal drink I don't remember the name I believe it may have been campfire or campsite brew. Poke bowl was good. Breakfast burrito was okay. Seating is a first come first serve. You order your food then find a seat. On a busy day it'll be a little hard to find one. read more
If you ever in Costa Mesa, this is a coffee shop and breakfast place you have to visit. Love love the ambiance and the aesthetic of Salty Horse. (Coastal Cowboy Theme Parking is very limited it's located in a residential area between Newport Blvd. & 21st street. Be prepared to stay in line for more rhan 15 minutes depending on the time you visit...but didn't mind the wait because it was my 1st time and took some photos to post on Yelp. I ordered the Hawaiian Cowboy - made with double shot of espresso, hawaiian honey and maple walnut milk. It is lightly sweet but very smooth. Also, got Saddle Spice Chai, Rice Krispy Cookie is so perfectly done - love the crispy texture, but soft cookie. read more
The drinks were just okay; the coffee didn't have much flavor and matcha looked pretty lacking. The food on the other hand was great with good portions and decently priced. Seating can be a challenge and chaotic since the tables are small. We came on a very hot summer day and it was definitely musty in there (no AC since the store itself is an open space). I would return for the food only and most likely to-go. The line can be very long and parking is mainly street/neighborhood parking. read more

Salty Horse is an Experience, & I Understand The Appeal I find myself coming back to Salty Horse for the great ambiance and quality drinks. I came shortly after they opened on a Saturday and they had a line as per usual. It's always a crowd here! But, it feels trendy and charming. They have a seasonal menu and a concrete menu. On my two visits, I ordered the Dessert Glaze with whole milk ($7.50) and the Straight from Kyoto ($7.50) with maple walnut milk. Both drinks I ordered were $7.50 and the price doesn't include tax, so I paid ~$8 in total per drink. They don't add too much ice, so you get a good amount. The Dessert Glaze wasn't very memorable, but I really enjoyed their matcha with the maple walnut milk! The taste was similar to a hazelnut creamer, and the drink wasn't too sweet because their matcha is very strong and full-bodied. My friend ordered the Arnold Palmer, and it was kind of watery so I wouldn't recommend their lemonades. The drinks can take a while depending on how busy they are, but whether you can find a table or sit at the bar, there's usually somewhere to sit. The ambiance here is great, with a bathroom, trendy decor, and a community-feel. It has been hot lately, and they don't run AC, however. So, be mindful of that. We didn't try any food, but it honestly looked amazing. Some cafes make you feel a certain way, and I think Salty Horse has that it factor where you want to come bring your friends for brunch or a quick drink. It's simply a nice place to be. Parking can be tough but it neighbors a residential area, so street parking is available. read more
incredibly rare confident high score. I didn't have high expectations for this place since it was a tiktok find but it actually was really good. the steak was cooked perfectly to a medium rare, was tender and seasoned very well with their cowboy butter. the fries were also one of those really good eczema fries. the food was served so fast despite it being so busy. the matcha was also good, I think they use rocky's matcha. I would def come again to try their coffees cause they looked good as well. overall very aesthetically pleasing place and the food lived up to the hype, and actually surpassed my expectations read more

First time at Salty Horse did not disappoint. Came on a Saturday around 2:30pm and was lucky enough to find parking in the lot behind the patio area. It's order at the counter and the line was just out the door, only took about 15 minutes to get through. Immediately found a table outside after ordering, loved the cowboy beach themed decor. Got the Blue Whale smoothie and Cali Burrito. Very good!! Honestly would come back for the smoothie alone. read more

The line was out the door when we came here . It is in a residential area Linda sorta idk it's weird and parking sucks . You wait in a line forever to order food , so that was a bummer . We went for bunch during week and I was shocked how packed it was . You have to go get drinks at the front which we didn't know . They bring food out but I guess not drinks which seem to take longer than the food . The theme of this place was cute and they keep the place clean . The food presentation and taste were great . Drinks were pretty and yummy . I don't know if I would go back just because the parking and the seats were super uncomfortable. I think the worse thing about this place for us were the chairs . Been wanting to check this place out since it opened but heard it's always busy. Thought today might be a good time since it was a Tuesday morning and I was right. Barely a line at around 10am. My husband got the steak and eggs and I got the JH breakfast burrito. Loved mine and he was really happy with his too. Only complaint is he asked for regular potatoes instead of tater tots and got tater tots instead but honestly they were really good it's not worth a complaint. I also got the blue pie smoothie which was great. Cute aesthetic on their patio too, outdoor seating only fyi. Also got the chocolate chip cookie which was delicious. Honestly no complaints - I get the hype. We will definitely be coming back! read more
This place has really good coffee!! There are so many options on the menu and each one has a cute name with a description under. I totally forgot what mine was called but it was delicious!! I will say it is on the pricier end ($8.08) but definitely worth it. Next time I definitely will try the food. The vibe outside is so cute and perfect for a cute coffee date and it has lots of photo ops! I came on a Tuesday around 3pm and it wasn't that busy so my friend and I were able to order quickly and find a good spot to sit. Parking might be hard on a busy day. read more

1. Ok first off, the location is not exactly on Newport Blvd literally drove around in a circle twice. Look for "Cecil Pl. 2. Took a bit to find parking(only street parking). 3. It's not a "serving" restaurant. We waited for about 30 min in line. When you get to the counter you order your food and drinks. 4. Then you wait around for a table to open. We waited about 10 minutes. 5. Our food came out fairly quick after getting a table. The vibe/ aesthetic is nice. I was really excited to check this new place out. Little disappointed with the process. Plus you couldn't really tell who works there, made a bit hard to get someone's attention, everyone was wearing regular clothes. No matter how long the line is make sure you stay in it!! It is absolutely worth the wait! Everything is so good and Cassie is the sweetest server! The cowboy latte is so good especially if you love maple and a nutty flavor in your coffee. The spicy ceasar salad with steak is amazing!! It can be a little salty so you can always ask for the sauce on the side! The California burrito (no rice and no cheese - trust me) is SO GOOD!!! So fresh and delicious! It's loaded up with all the right things. The vibes are so good and it's so easy to find a seat even if it is busy. The fries are a must!!!! Arrived around 10am on Saturday and there was a long line to order! There is only one kiosk. There's seatings inside and outside. Loved the decor! We ordered for here and our food came first before our drinks. Expect 15+ min wait. 4/5 Steak Frites $24 - Asked for medium. IMO steep price but presentation and flavor made it worth. 2.5/5 Cowgirl matcha $8 - I was excited for their drinks but this tasted more like milk than matcha to me.
