While visiting the OC area, a local friend brought my wife and me to Salty Horse. Coming from the Midwest, I really enjoyed the coastal, beach-house-inspired design--the space is bright, relaxed, and filled with lush greenery and succulents that give it a great vibe. As my benchmark drink, I ordered my usual flat white. Overall, it was decent, though the espresso pulled a bit more bitter than I typically prefer. I also ordered a house made lemonade just as a palette cleanser. My wife tried a drink I forgot about, and my friend got her usual matcha, both of which they enjoyed. I also picked up a bag of coffee from one of their local supplier roasters to try at home, nothing special. The only real downside is the parking situation. Spaces on-site are limited and street parking nearby can be fairly scarce, so prepare to hunt for a spot during peak hours. Still a neat local shop worth checking out for the atmosphere!
Finally tried the place I keep hearing rave reviews about! Upon arrival, we were shocked at the line out the door, but figured it was time to wait and see what the fuss was about. I ordered the peach iced tea and verde bowl. I saw truffle fries while waiting in line, so got those as well. The drink was presented well and tasted great. It's unsweetened which was perfectly refreshing. The verde bowl was amazing. I loved all the greens and it was light but satisfying. The fries were also wonderful. I definitely could not finish them on my own and shared with my friends. My friend ordered the tropical salad and loved it too! The environment is welcoming and fun! I wish we had more time to sit and enjoy. I'd go back, but on a day I have more time to enjoy the whole experience. We had a short window for a lunch break, so ended up having to order and eat back at our meeting.
I was really excited to try this place since I've seen it all over social media! The atmosphere was very lively on a Friday morning with a line almost out the door. There's limited seating inside and lots of seating outside. I ordered an iced Smores coffee off of their seasonal menu which ultimately ended up tasting like chocolate milk so that was disappointing since I was hoping for a nice caffeine boost. I also had the lox bagel which tasted fresh and the ingredients all tied together very nicely but it was a bit overstated with the sea salt crystals they use. At one point I had to scrape off some of the salt crystals just because there were so many and it became crunchy on my mouth. Overall it was a cool place to hangout but maybe if I go again I'd try a different drink and food choice!

Been seeing how popular this place was, so I decided to stop by to see if it's all true. Parking is kind of a disaster. Parking is in a residential, so good luck on those who cant parallel park. The establishment itself is super cute. Very well decorated and love the mix of beach costal vibes with the western look. Lots of merch and treats (high end, notable brands) on the side of the line to look at while you are waiting. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Plenty of spots and great for parties of 2-4. Also great it you are going solo like I did. Wait took about 15 minutes to order. Ordered the Guava Matcha and the Desert Glaze coffee drink with regular milk, less sweetness and less milk. Very easy going about the adjustments and were able to cater towards my request. Drinks took about 10ish minutes, quoted 10-15 minutes. Service was pleasant. Drinks were honestly ok. I had high hopes for their matcha cause I have heard and seen such great praises for it, but honestly mediocre at best. The flavor of guava does shine through and jt wasn't too sweet, but the matcha did not really have any matcha flavor or notes. The desert glaze was also just ok. Still a bit more of the milky and creamy side. The espresso was definitely a good quality but even with requesting less milk, I still feel like the milk overtook the whole drink. For taking up about 25-30 minutes to just get some drinks and not even food, I don't think it was worth the wait in line or searching of parking. Personally, glad to have seen and tried the drinks and might come back to try their food and a different drink, but probably won't come back for a while. Not worth my driving all the way out here to try.
Well this is unfortunate, updating my review from only a few months ago as it seems they made changes to their menu for the worst. Got rid of the thick pork belly bacon on the wanderer which was really unique and made the dish special. It is now expensive eggs bacon potatoes and toast. We were 4th to order and our food came out cold. Everyone's dish from the French toast the wanderer and the breakfast burrito all cold. Hopefully they see this and change back, also seeing my old picture of the banana bread it had a thick slab of icing when now it was almost piped on. Disappointing adjustments to the menu, it's now overpriced diner food.

Steak and eggs meal was absolutely delicious! Got the Hawaiian cowboy latte and loved it. Will definitely come back!
Been wanting to check this place out since it opened but heard it's always busy. Thought today might be a good time since it was a Tuesday morning and I was right. Barely a line at around 10am. My husband got the steak and eggs and I got the JH breakfast burrito. Loved mine and he was really happy with his too. Only complaint is he asked for regular potatoes instead of tater tots and got tater tots instead but honestly they were really good it's not worth a complaint. I also got the blue pie smoothie which was great. Cute aesthetic on their patio too, outdoor seating only fyi. Also got the chocolate chip cookie which was delicious. Honestly no complaints - I get the hype. We will definitely be coming back!

They have a special drink menu right now and i'll leave that for you guys to go see for yourself ;) The outside is a pretty Barn vibe and there is indoor and outdoor seating! (i recommend the outside area!) we got a number and the workers brought our food to us but for drinks we had go pick up inside after calling out our names The food was amazing and the workers were all friendly! Food and drinks: 10/10 I will definitely be coming back for the breakfast as it looks amazing!! (Parking is also a little hard so try to go early!)

They all looked like they were having a good time, which I really feel like makes a difference as a customer! The space itself is so cute, picture a beach house with a country feel. Both were super yummy and filling - the portions were big! We were eyeing the person next to us enjoying the steak and eggs... will be ordering next time!
If you ever in Costa Mesa, this is a coffee shop and breakfast place you have to visit. Love love the ambiance and the aesthetic of Salty Horse. (Coastal Cowboy Theme Parking is very limited it's located in a residential area between Newport Blvd. & 21st street. Be prepared to stay in line for more rhan 15 minutes depending on the time you visit...but didn't mind the wait because it was my 1st time and took some photos to post on Yelp. I ordered the Hawaiian Cowboy - made with double shot of espresso, hawaiian honey and maple walnut milk. It is lightly sweet but very smooth. Also, got Saddle Spice Chai, Rice Krispy Cookie is so perfectly done - love the crispy texture, but soft cookie.
We came here on a Friday around 1:30 and were lucky enough to find seating! We got the steak and eggs & a guava matcha with oat milk which I'd recommend decreasing the sweetness if you don't like sugary drinks. The staff were nice when we placed our order and the tables were cleaned despite how busy it got.
OC needed more good brunch spots, so I'm glad we have Salty Horse! There always seems to be a line here, so try to get there early. Went at 9am on a Saturday and there was already a line out the door. "Steak and Eggs': loved the flavor of the steak, it was cooked perfectly! Eggs are cooked your way and it comes with avocado and a sourdough slice as well. 'Hawaiian Cowboy: coffee flavor wasn't that strong, it almost tasted watered down, and there was this floraly taste that I didn't expect Breakfast options are delicious, love the portion sizes (definitely will have leftovers), and they have such a cute and cozy outdoor seating area! I will say tho I'm kind of disappointed with the drinks here, and I've tried both their coffee and matcha....but I would recommend this place for their food! read more

Tried salty horse for the first time and I will be back. I got there around 9:30 AM which was perfect because there was no line. I ordered the steak and eggs, berries and cream Matcha, and the cookie dough banana bread. My total was about $45. Steak & eggs: 8/10; these portions were big and perfect. The steak had flavor. Tater tots were crispy. Sourdough bread was soft but crunchy on the outside. Eggs were over easy. Berries & cream matcha: 8.5/10; I actually really enjoyed this Matcha. Not sure why it came in a smaller cup than what my cousin ordered, but maybe because I said light ice? I think that is something that should have been mentioned to me that I would get a smaller cup. Otherwise, I liked this matcha a lot. Cookie dough Banana bread: 9/10; this was so good, so soft, so fresh. The only thing I wish is that I would be able to taste more of the cookie dough. I was a bit confused where the cookie dough was at in this banana bread. There were times where I did taste it, but I wasn't too sure. However, it did have lots of flavor and I would probably get the banana bread alone. Overall, I would return. There was a line formed outside around 10:30 AM, so I definitely recommend getting there early. This was even on a Tuesday morning. So it seems like the line forms no matter the day. read more

Second time visiting Salty Horse as there's always a line out the door and around the corner. Not only was the wait for the food faster than the coffee. The girls making the lattes/drinks moved at a snails pace and for an 8 latte they barely bothered to fill it to the top. Would have been better off going to Hola Adios Coffee Shop around the corner. read more

The line was out the door when we came here . It is in a residential area Linda sorta idk it's weird and parking sucks . You wait in a line forever to order food , so that was a bummer . We went for bunch during week and I was shocked how packed it was . You have to go get drinks at the front which we didn't know . They bring food out but I guess not drinks which seem to take longer than the food . The theme of this place was cute and they keep the place clean . The food presentation and taste were great . Drinks were pretty and yummy . I don't know if I would go back just because the parking and the seats were super uncomfortable. I think the worse thing about this place for us were the chairs . Our butts didn't fit and it was very uncomfortable. We went on a warm day and a lot of the outside area is in the sun so that also was a negative . I rate this place a 3.5 /5 read more
This place has really good coffee!! There are so many options on the menu and each one has a cute name with a description under. I totally forgot what mine was called but it was delicious!! I will say it is on the pricier end ($8.08) but definitely worth it. Next time I definitely will try the food. The vibe outside is so cute and perfect for a cute coffee date and it has lots of photo ops! I came on a Tuesday around 3pm and it wasn't that busy so my friend and I were able to order quickly and find a good spot to sit. Parking might be hard on a busy day. read more
No matter how long the line is make sure you stay in it!! It is absolutely worth the wait! Everything is so good and Cassie is the sweetest server! The cowboy latte is so good especially if you love maple and a nutty flavor in your coffee. The spicy ceasar salad with steak is amazing!! It can be a little salty so you can always ask for the sauce on the side! The California burrito (no rice and no cheese - trust me) is SO GOOD!!! So fresh and delicious! It's loaded up with all the right things. The vibes are so good and it's so easy to find a seat even if it is busy. The fries are a must!!!! Make sure to also as for ranch on the side because their ranch was delicious!! There's a bunch of street parking next to the cafe as well! read more

This place is phenomenal and the service is off the charts. This place deserves ten stars as everything is crafted from scratch on the premises. I highly recommend that you move this to a must visit in the OC as you will not be disappointed. This place is so freaking adorable with food all day and evening that will have you coming back. Arrived around 10am on Saturday and there was a long line to order! There is only one kiosk. There's seatings inside and outside. Loved the decor! We ordered for here and our food came first before our drinks. Expect 15+ min wait. 4/5 Steak Frites $24 - Asked for medium. IMO steep price but presentation and flavor made it worth. 2.5/5 Cowgirl matcha $8 - I was excited for their drinks but this tasted more like milk than matcha to me. Would love to try their coffee drinks next time! read more

I got the guava matcha and tbh, it was very good! I also got the pitaya pancakes and holy moly it was delicious! LOVED THE PANCAKES. It was so big and filling and definitely satisfied my pancake cravings! My friend got a spicy caesar salad and a latte. This place is cute! Has a good amount of seats outside and a few tables inside + the counter/coffee bar area. This place does get hot if you're sitting at the table inside on a hot summer day. The tables are first come first serve and you do line up to order your food, they give u a number, and they serve you the food. The food all look very good and aesthetically pleasing. read more

Interesting spot that was pretty busy on a weekday. Good coffee and food - my wife's tuna dish looked amazing and she recommends it. We sat indoors because there was some kind of toxic smell near the back of the outside hallway seating that was likely coming from a neighboring commercial business. I'd recommend coming here outside of busy, prime-time hours and will return. Mocha was great (9.5/10) and my chocolate chip cookie was tasty as well. read more
This place is a bit of a mad house so I'd recommend coming here early. If you're going to come here for lunch you'll end up waiting in a long line outside to order and then have to look for a seat if you plan to dine here. It's very cute and the food is good but the timing on food and drinks can take a long time. Our drinks came out 20 minutes after our food did and by that time, our food was cold. This place would be so much better if it was more organized. Also, the drinks here are quite expensive and watery (maybe the drinks were actually sitting for a while which is why it took so long to get them) but the portion size on the drinks are soooo small read more

This spot is great for brunch and despite the long line, the food is really good. I got the dragon fruit pancakes, which were really on point. They also have seasonal ceremonial grade matcha, which was also on point. You pay up front before the food is delivered to you and it actually came out pretty quickly. Highly recommend! read more

Went on a Friday morning before it got too busy. By the time we finished eating there was a long line waiting to order and be seated. We got the JH breakfast burrito and campfire French toast and they were great. We also got For The Wanderer, which the description says comes with "a drizzle of olive oil", it was way more than a drizzle. That was our only complaint. The thick cut bacon was delicious. Will definitely be back to try different dishes. Love the atmosphere and decor, very coastal cowboy. read more
It's an odd layout, you order on the left side and it can get crowded and snug. You're pretty much trapped there until you order and then you have to go back the same way. Our order: 1) Hawaiian Cowboy 2) Berries & Cream 3) JH Breakfast Burrito 4) Salty Red Breakfast Burrito 5) GF Toffee Coffee The cashier was super friendly and memorable because last minute I wanted to change my milk choice and she was super nice about it - which was greatly appreciated. No surprise but a majority of the tables were already taken. The exterior of the building is very cool - I love the color of the outside. Inside is also very hip. My drink looked better than it tasted, but it wasn't bad. I just felt like it was milk forward than anything else. The Jh Burrito was yummy and the green sauce it came with was insanely good! Cookie was also amazing! Would gladly pay $5.00 every single time for that cookie! read more
Unfortunately everytime I would try to go during normal coffee times the line is out the door! Finally was able to try for a late coffee and had the drinks we had were so good! Strawberry bronco (Chocolate strawberry) iced latte and a Buckaroo (London fog with espresso). The London fog drink was a rec from the cashier and it was so good! Small place want to come back to try the food but maybe during non popular times. read more
I visited the Salty Horse on Saturday for lunch and it was a great spot ! This gem of a restaurant is seed oil-free, which is such a rare find and greatly appreciated. They're open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM, making it perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We started with the Avocado Toast as a starter, and it was delicious a must-try! The highlight of my meal was definitely the Cowboy Steak Frites; the ribeye steak cooked to perfection, topped with rich cowboy butter, and those truffle parmesan fries were a perfect pairing. For drinks, we started with Fresh Pressed Blueberry Mint Lemonade($6). It was refreshing and not too sweet. Before heading out we grabbed a Berries and Cream Matcha ,less sweet ($8.50) and a seasonal Banana Bandit Matcha. Both had great taste and were delicious. The outdoor seating area is a lovely spot for small groups. If you're looking for tasty food without the seed oils, Salty Horse is the place to go! I can't wait to return and explore more of their menu! One thing to mention is their parking is street parking but there was plenty of spaces to park . read more

The coffee and food here were delicious! Came on a hot day there was plenty of seating inside and they have a patio that's super well shaded. We had burritos & a pasty and it was all delicious. Nice place to have your morning coffee. read more

Salty Horse had been on my list for awhile now after seeing the hype on social media but I was worried it would be overhyped and we might not like it but we really did love it! We got there around 9:30am on a Sunday and waited about 30 min in line before we ordered. By the time we sat down and left the line had grown a lot longer so I recommend coming here early. The place itself is cute. Loved the decor. The menu was extensive and we definitely want to be back to try more items. We got the JH breakfast burrito to share. I ordered the Hawaiian cowboy and my boyfriend asked if they had a drink and they didn't so he ordered a seasonal drink but they also didn't have it (which is why I gave it 4 starts). The drink he ordered - the bonfire brew was not good. It didn't taste good or have any flavor which was a let down. We were able to find a seat which was great! Now to the food - the breakfast burrito is now our favorite breakfast burrito we've had in OC! The flavors were just perfect and the tots were fried to perfection. I will say that the three sauces are all spicy so I do wish they had a non spicy sauce. The Hawaiian cowboy is now my favorite! I loved it so much! We also got the brown butte banana bread and we liked it. I would try something else from their pastry selection next time. My boyfriend also got some chippy's chips that they were selling as you wait in line, made from beef tallow and we loved them. He also got tangerine sours which he is obsessed with. I will say it is pricey but the food quality and at least my drink was good. The service was good too. We were just disappointed with my boyfriend's seasonal drink, but other than that, we can't wait to come back! Parking is just street parking so it can be hard but we found parking. Great casual vibes with a variety of options for food items. There's 1 pubic restroom and good amount of seating outside and inside. It looks like it can be busy on the weekends though. I had visited a few weeks back when they had the collab with Polite Society so I tried the Tiramisu Latte - definitely on the sweeter side but still good and creamy. Wait is roughly 30 minutes on Sunday after 1pm. Parking is only on streets and be wary of the signs of no parking in adjacent buildings. Place is hidden so have to walk around the neighborhood and shop to find this place. Food was interesting. Salty yes like the name. The bagel was a bit on the saltier side with the smoked salmon but figure it was the salted cream and smoked salmon. The fried chicken on ube waffle was on the dry side. Drinks are great. Outdoor seating was alright. Need more staff to assist the one staff there running around. read more

So this is my second time coming back! And it lives up to the expectations! The vibe the decor the entire place is a vibe and everything pairs! Even the drinks!! As I walked in staff already greeted me and was helpful. I ordered their new mocha cold brew and delicious!!! I also ordering there chicken tendies just to try wasn't expecting much! But dude it was more than expected and I get it, it's chicken tendies but it's bussin!!! Come here if you haven't. For my second time being here I've tried a handful of items on the menu and everything hits. As far as pricing. Don't be expecting to pay 1-5$ like come on be realistic here. Inflation!!! So glad to finally have tried Salty Horse, and it definitely met the hype - the ambiance, drinks and food all were great! We got the Campfire French Toast and Cowboy Steak Fries and honestly enjoyed both. The french toast was yummy -- not overly sweet, topped with fruit and graham cracker crumbles for that little crunch that totally fits the campfire theme. The steak fries were solid, though the steak came out a touch more done than the medium we ordered -- minor thing overall. For drinks, we ordered the Coco Drift and Jasmine Coast -- the names alone are cute and very on brand. Coco Drift was my order and it was a seasonal item, but I hope it becomes permanent one day. I'm a huge coconut water matcha person and this met my standards - super refreshing, and the matcha and coconut water were balanced from each other. The space is really charming -- beachy and coastal with warm rustic wooden touches that make it feel cozy. It all ties together in a way that actually matches the name, which I appreciate. Service was super friendly too, everyone was really welcoming. Street parking only and there's usually a line, but both moved faster than expected and it wasn't difficult to find seating. Overall just a really fun spot -- would definitely be back! read more
