Pop's Diner was a great first time experience for us. The coffee was fresh and really good, which is always a great way to start a meal for me. My daughter had the Hawaiian Mimosa (champagne, pineapple juice, and grenadine) and it was perfection well balanced between the juice and champagne without being too sweet. We ordered the she crab soup as well. My daughter really enjoyed it, but it just wasn't for me. It's hard to pinpoint exactly why it simply wasn't something I would order again. Overall, the food was great. My daughter ordered an omelette and said she would definitely get it again, though next time she'd ask for the lemon dill sour cream on the side because the flavor was a little overpowering for her. I had the pancake combo played it safe because this was our first visit. Overall, we had a good experience and the ambiance is nice booth and table style set up. I love diners and a very nice breakfast experience, so when I was in the area I did some research and two places that seemed to be nicely rated were Pop's and Filipino style breakfast place. I opted for Pop's. They weren't busy with regular customers when I arrived (I say "regular" because it appeared that someone rented out one side of the restaurant for a presentation and no one was on the other side). I was quickly greeted and seated and my server was friendly and very attentive and helpful. The menu is loaded with excellent options and there were so many that I had a tough time deciding. I opted for their Chorizo Bowl. Their coffee was great! I was amazing at how clean the water glass was... it's small things like this that tell me about their attention to detail - very important to notice! The Chorizo Bowl was bland and boring, which is unfortunate. I really wanted to like it, but there was no sauce, no flavor distinction between the items in the bowl and it smelled like flat top grill, not like the ingredients in the bowl. Hot sauce helped, but didn't really help that much. I ended up eating about 1/3 of it. My server did notice and ask, but I told her it was fine... I honestly didn't want to start over and I was short on time. I like the concept, if I ever came back, I'd do something different. read more

Decided to come here for brunch after church. While it was busy, the wait for a table. This was my first time here, I loved the different options they had. I decided on the crap dipper sandwich with grits, and my husband got the chicken & waffles. I got my eggs over medium & added spinach to my sandwich. The Crossiant was fresh & I enjoyed the she crab that came with the sandwich. My husband ate the chicken tenders, he didn't really care for the waffle. This was my husband's and I first time going to a Pops Diner Co. We absolutely loved this location. Leslie was our server and she was an absolute blast. She was relatable and didn't feel like a generic cookie cutter server. You can tell she made her guests feel comfortable and she was super proud of the place she worked at. I wish I took more photos but the mural in the building was amazing and the whole vibe felt super cosy (the booth seats could use a bit more cushioning lol). I ordered the Peach Crush and the Pops Smashburger. The Peach Crush was their special of the day and it was delicious. I could taste the alcohol but it was pleasant. The smashburger was to die for; however, I wish it included more of the honey chipotle sauce. Overall, we will be coming back to Pops Diner Co because both the service and food were amazing and there is more we'd like to try! read more

Very nice, clean, bright, open, lots of windows. Plenty of tables and booths. Super friendly staff. Large breakfast menu, lots of options, even mimosas and the like. Moon sandwich great, toast and bacon and eggs good. Don't miss Pop's home fries, more fried potatoes but excellent! Cooked and seasoned right, and a nice hint of onion. The one low point was the fruit bowl. Strawberries did not seem fresh. But otherwise highly recommend, and will be back to try a few other menu items that looked good (seafood omelettes!). read more

When I went to Pops Dinner it was 2:30 pm and they closed at 3:00pm. I was welcomed in and was not rushed. The music was just right. The waitress was very friendly and made sure I was fine. I ordered the crab soup and Pops's Smashburger with fries. The crab soup was thick, tasty, and crab in every spoonful. The Smashburger was hot and juicy and enough for two meals. Thoroughly Satisfied I happened to pick Pop's Chesapeake because it was the closest option to our hotel and on New Years Day morning I NEEDED a diner breakfast and Bloody Mary ASAP. My date and I pulled in to a full parking lot and had to circle a couple times to find a spot, I was worried about a long wait. We walked in and saw a couple small groups ahead of us but all including us were seated right away. It was a full dining room, but it was being turned over quickly and efficiently. At the helm was either Pop himself, his son or a front of the house manager that runs a tight ship because the table staff hummed along nicely. I also noticed that for such a large, full dining room, there wasn't the usual clatter and volume I'm used to in diners. It was easy to have a low volume conversation. The menu offering is about what you'd expect for a breakfast/lunch spot. They have a Hangover special that they're proud of but the Bananas Foster Waffle combo was calling my name. We ordered and our food was delivered by our friendly waitress much quicker than we expected for such a busy dining room. Oh, and get this; when she asked "is there anything else I can bring you?" I asked for syrup. She said "Oh, I'm warming some for you now, I'll be right back." And sure enough, she came back with my little personal decanter of warmed maple syrup!! And all along the way she kept our coffee topped off. Cup never ran dry! They use a unique waffle iron that produces swirls instead of squares. These swirls make the outside texture nice and crispy while the inside remained pillowy soft. Eggs were perfectly over-medium and the sausage links tasted like local Surry sausage. read more

I was here on a busy Sunday morning. Plenty of parking. I was part of a huge group and we had the whole back section with 3 tables.....2 four tops and a larger table that could seat around16-20. We had separate checks amongst the couples so we were a lot. The service was great and our server ( I didn't get her name) was wonderful!!! She truly handled everything with a smile. This is a good solid place to go for breakfast or lunch - especially with kids. But it wasn't my favorite. I didn't love my chicken salad - I found it a bit dry and not a lot of flavor. I only ate 1/2 and took 1/2 home and doctored it up a bit. I didn't hear any complaints really from anyone but honestly we were there to catch up with old friends. They were very patient with us and I know they probably needed our tables. I would probably go back if someone chose the restaurant. It just wasn't my favorite. read more

Service was fine. Food leaves one hell of a lot to be desired. We have eaten at Pops a couple of times, and while it has never been anything to write home about, it has been serviceable. This time, the only reason that we ate it at all is because we were breaking a 24 hour fast and both of us were seriously hungry. To start, the meal came out within five minutes. Now, I have made my fair share of chicken fried steak in my day and I have never even gotten it to the pan that quick. When we compared plates, it was painfully obvious that the meat came out of a box from Sysco, or some other purveyor of heat and eat meals. Next, the home fries were cold, so we asked for a side of gravy to warm them up, rather than sending them back...(again, we were HUNGRY)!!! Little did we know that a ladle of gravy was going to add $3.00 to our check. Just to keep things interesting, the gravy was lukewarm at best...and BTW, sausage gravy is supposed to made with sausage. We ate as much as we could stomach and paid our check. This past winter I was in town for a special event and decided to come here on my last day in Norfolk/Chesapeake. Just a simple reminder there's about a 20/30 minute wait for a table. Now here is where I have an issue. I've only been to the Chesapeake location, but I've noticed that NONE of the wait staff are of any race other than Caucasian. But here's the kicker....ALL of the kitchen staff are black or African American. Are those the only positions open to blacks at this establishment or what?! I really like this location. We went for lunch during the week. Wasn't crowded like the weekends. Very clean as always. I didn't get pictures of my food like a normally do but we ordered the French toast combo with eggs over easy and breakfast potatoes and the cinnamon roll pancakes. The French toast taste even better than it looks! Has a taste similar to a popular donut shop. The potatoes were cooked as requested -one of my favorite menu items...yours too if you grew up eating fried potatoes! Our waitress Danielle did a fantastic job! The table next to us was not only giving her a hard time but they also walked out leaving their food and an unpaid bill. Danielle remained professional. We ordered a Western omelette and hash and eggs.. potatoes for both, white and whole grain toast. By this time, about 5 tables are taken. Plates looked great. Toast was cold. I wouldn't have noticed except the butter wasn't melted. Can't mess up scrambled eggs and canned corned beef hash so I was good. Fresh eggs because I got shell in my mouth. No worries. Potatoes were tasty. Service could have been better. My guest had one extra napkin. I asked for extra napkins please. She gave me my guest napkin. Coffee stain and all. Then gave my guest one fresh napkin. My pants still work as a napkin in a pinch so again, I'm good. Coffee refilled twice. I guess I didn't need more because she didn't ask after the second refill. So, I paid and tipped because I don't want to feed into the stereotype of certain groups of people don't tip. Then we left. Bottom line, don't think we will be back because: 1. Giving a customer a used napkin is a no go. 2. Toast so cold the butter wasn't melted is a no go. 3. A limited amount of coffee based on server assumption I had enough is a no go. My stepdaughter lives in the area and we've eaten here many of times. Anytime we've ever came, the place has been nearly empty. We've always only came for breakfast. Kids eat free daily with the purchase of an adult meal. Be aware a drink is not included. The place is very clean, but I can't think of one time that we've came in and staff were friendly. The food is mediocre at best. Most of everything tastes like it'd been frozen and popped in the microwave. Something funky was going on with their scrambled eggs. Not sure if they were going for fancy, or if it was the premixed scrambled egg mix, but they tasted like rubber. The french toast tasted under cooked and the bacon was thin and unremarkable. Their prices aren't really that great, even with the free kids meal. This last time especially, my husband and I decided that our stops at Pop's will be a thing of the past.
