Long food wait time, out of many items. Food came out wrong, food was decent, service is decent. She told me my total, I paid, added 20%, after asking for an itemized receipt I was charged twice. We chatted about there tip options being 3,5,7% being low never mentioned them already adding 20%. They pre add 20% I asked and she pointed to a hidden sign behind a vase that was about 6in big. I wanted to love this place, but in my opinion it's just okay. I've been hearing how this place is all the Rave... the breakfast is good the lunch is good! I figured okay Veterans Day, a day off, so me and my family decided to dine here. This past Friday we arrived and it's definitely a Corner Cafe meaning that it's limited seating...I counted maybe 12 tables inside, but luckily soon as we walked through the door there was a table of 4 that was open which was the only table of 4 that was opened so I'm thinking all right | right place right time. Now let's hope that the food is worthy of 5 stars. We were greeted immediately... everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves that were around us not much chatter going on so even though it's a rather small place it wasn't noisy. There are TVs inside and you can literally see right into the kitchen if you really wanted to pay attention to who's cooking your food and how they're preparing it as well. The desserts are laid out for display ... heavily wrapped in plastic. This place sits on a corner and it's pretty much an open spaces restaurant, no blind spots...no creep spot here! I did notice that they have a truck that delivers so that's good to know I'm not sure of the mile radius of the delivery. The food was just okay. The corn beef hash is homemade and it's uniquely made. While it was good it wasn't the best I ever had. The eggs, scrambled, good! The homemade biscuit, blah :( Needless to say I ate everything but I wasn't satisfied or happy...food is supposed to make you feel good!! If you're looking to be wowed by this place you can go and form your own opinion but I wasn't. My other family members that were there weren't impressed either, but my daughter loved the bacon. I guess when you've been other places and you know better cooking and at home... The hospitality and the service was 5 stars but the food and the taste of it I'm going to have to give it 3 stars, but you go and have fun! read more

I've been passing by this restaurant for years and today I finally decided to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did! I ordered the French toast and a side of loaded hash browns. I waited about 20 mins for my food, which wasn't bad at all considering there were a few groups ahead of me. I ordered my food to-go and they brought my food out to my car when it was ready. The French toast was good and the hash browns were INCREDIBLE. The inside of the restaurant was very cozy, and I would have loved to sit there and enjoy my meal, but I'm personally not comfortable eating out at restaurants just yet. They do seem to be taking a lot of precautions, though, and I was pleased to see that you must wear a mask to enter the restaurant. All in all, I would definitely recommend trying this place out, especially for breakfast! read more

This is a cute, quaint cafe in Portsmouth. Nice and clean environment, including the woman's bathroom. The entire restaurant is engulfed in the aroma of fresh cooked food. The staff members are friendly and considerate of customers needs. The food is okay. I ordered a chicken philly sub with fries and a lemon cake. I felt as though I was eating more bread than chicken philly and the fries definitely needed another minute (or two) along with some seasoning. The cake was good, however, you can tell that they freeze them. I will definitely be back to try the food again, next time something different. Maybe then I can give them four stars. *UPDATE* they're down to one star now, from three. Today, 3/23/19, I order their dinner special (fried flounder) with extra fries instead of coleslaw, a cup of she crab soup and a lemon cake. The "fish" I received were PATHETIC! All fried skin and batter with no fish! Then they had the nerve to put these two little scrawny pieces of fish over my fries. Absolutely appalled and will NEVER order anything from here again except their she crab soup...that was good but they still only get one star! read more

We came in to see why this corner restaurant was so popular. It was full so we sat at the counter. The waitress was quick to come over and get our drinks and explain the menu. She added that a couple was checking out and she would move us to their table in a few minutes. She was a woman of her word and we sat at a cute table in not time. We ordered the fish and fries with tea for our drinks. The portions were HUGE and YUMMY. We enjoyed the potato too. We eat as much as we could and took the rest home for later in the evening. Well, we ate enough to fill us up and then we ordered cake for dessert. We looked at the selection when we were sitting next to them at the counter. They stared at us through their glass cake holders - haha! What can I say, we ordered two kinds of cake lemon and strawberry. They were homemade and delicious. We did finish the cake without any problems. The cake slices were large and full of flavor. The cake was moist and melted in our mouths. I would say more but the cake went so fast. The fish was whiting but somehow the cook added something to the batter that made it mouthwatering. Everyone was talking until their plate came then they started eating and smiling like we did. I think the batter on the fish and the homemade tartar sauce was down-home Southern good. The potato salad was sweet yet tangy. Everything was great. The service is amazing. The restaurant was clean and very cute. Loved the way customers talked to each other as if we knew each other because we loved the food so much. Food makes great friends. My only issue was the parking. We had to wait for a space. It was worth the wait for the space. I have been back many times and eaten the burgers with friends and family. You will be a hero if you introduce anyone to this local gem! read more

Great little hidden gem just off the beaten trail in Portsmouth, come give them a whirl for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. I checked the box for intimate, but really I meant cozy or quaint. I've had multiple meals here over the last 2 years or so & have never had anything but my compliments to the chef. Today I enjoyed a large Chicken Philly cheese steak with the works on it, a pickle & red potato salad instead of chips. I prefer to come in for breakfast & a bottomless coffee cup, but they serve comfort meals as well(pork chops, mac n' cheese, collard greens...). They're also very well known for their baked goods which range from cakes & cobblers to cookies, brownies & bread pudding. When you order a large sub it essentially comes out as 2 "small" sandwiches. So for $2 more than a small you get 2 good sized sandwiches. The friendly staff doesn't hover, but they're very attentive. Oh yeah, I'm battling a head cold, so this was a quick to go order that was no more than a 10 minute wait, probably closer to 5 really. I would really like to enjoy their baked goods more regularly, but I often forget they're even there haha read more

When you order the burger be prepared for a large burger placed on a large soft bun. I recommend getting it medium rare rather than medium well. The atmosphere is nice and the server is welcoming. Seating is close and neighbors are comfortable exchanging cross table conversation. Be prepared to say hi, cordial or just smile at the locals or meet your neighbors. The flounder sandwich is expansive and has what you expect from a traditional sandwich. I enjoyed the photographic wall art of the surrounding area. The tall cakes in the counter were beautiful. This place could be so much better! Won't last for long with inflated prices and mediocre quality. Been here 4 times and still don't see why people rate this so high. After the tuna sandwich I had the other day (and had to go back to get the cheese for my sandwich) I'm done. Who in the south doesn't use sweet relish? I don't know what that was they served me, but I'll be going back to Subs, Sandwiches and More on George Washington next time to save my money and be satisfied with my meal. I love good food and this place had it! This place is very clean and comfortable. Me and my boyfriend found a little corner spot next to the window and it's so warm and welcoming ! I ordered the omelette supreme with hash browns and my boyfriend ordered the breakfast sandwich ..I don't usually like biscuits but I tried my bfs biscuit and it was good ! First time here - my daughter and I thought we would pop in for a quick breakfast since her first class was cancelled today and I didn't have to be at work til 11:00. The place is super cute - only 8 indoor tables and a couple outside. Our server was super friendly and her personality was fun! She took care of us from the moment we walked in. There was a couple sitting when we got there. After we waited about 40 min the other couple finally stood up and said they were waiting an hour and had to go! The waitress went and got the owner who came out, apologized and told us the cook called off and she was doing her best. We also noticed a HUGE Grubhub order come out and THEN they started cooking our food. We got them all at the same time. AFTER the food finally came - it was delicious and the portions were HUGE! As an out-of-towner and extremely picky about my dining experiences; Corner Cafe did not disappoint. The food and customer service was exceptionally well. My daughter and I shared a Philly Steak and Cheese, my husband had the red hot, and my other daughter and her husband both had the bacon cheeseburger and fries. Again, everything was well prepared to our liking. It is a small diner so I don't recommend large groups. If you love Quant, hole in the wall diner type places where they will remember your name and have amazing cake... this is the place for you! I've had a couple lunch dates for friends here and once all by my lonesome. The place is pretty tiny, inside and out, but it's always clean and the staff super friendly and helpful. The tables inside are pretty close together, so no dangling accessories unless you want to take out the eye of another patron. Between my visits and the various people with me during them we've gotten a variety of sandwiches and burgers and it's always delicious. Stopped for a quick lunch with partner. I ordered the Grilled chicken Pita, out of chicken they said so decided on the cold Deluxe Chicken Salad plate. The waitress, who was very pregnant and very sweet, described the deluxe Chicken salad as homemade having grapes, chucks of chicken and walnuts (I think) over a bed of lettuce with Cole slaw on the side. Our plates were horrible, chicken salad was poor quality, Food Lion store brand off the shelf quality. Also they were out of iceberg lettuce so they gave us more Cole slaw (which was also nothing to write home about). We did not complain as it wasn't the waitress' fault. She did temp of with dessert; I had the German Chocolate, while my friend had the pineapple cake. The dessert was the highlight of the meal! Hoping to try again with better results. read more

I visited this place this morning as it came recommended by a friend. The first thing that struck me was how many things the waitress said they were out of. To name a few, lemons, cookies, cobblers, muffins, biscuits, several types of juice. Then when our meal arrived, there was cheese on the eggs. If we knew the eggs came like that, we'd of ordered with no cheese. We ordered the hash browns crunchy and they weren't crispy, just overly greasy. The waitress did okay. We went there for dinner one night after finding another local favorite too crowded. It took awhile to navigate the menu but were satisfied with the results. We found that they were very creative in table arranging to get that many seats available but, as expected, it was a bit too much like community dining. I know this is beyond their control but if you are looking for eating with more space surrounding you plan to go during an off hour. More than one time we were confronted with the backside of a server when they were handling an adjacent table. This is a smaller restaurant and it gets very busy during lunch . I got the porkchop special, and it was not good at all. The porkchop was so thin, and over cooked. The sides were ok. I think their baked goods are what people really like. My hubby had a bacon cheeseburger he said it was ok, but nothing special. The place and clean and nice however the food is bland and okay and definitely over priced for what it is. For two people to eat who just had four pancakes between the two of us and four eggs again between the two of us it was 40$. The service is okay. We received separate checks from one server and went up to pay with a different girl and I handed her my card and my separate check and she somehow managed to combine them and charge me for both (totally fine) but when I brought it to her attention she called the other girl over and blamed me for not saying anything and I said "well when I hand you my check with a certain amount on it I thought it's pretty self explanatory" she rolled her eyes and walked away. So bland over priced food and a snotty waitress doesn't make for a pleasant breakfast experience. Won't waste my time or money again. read more

My family & I have ordered food to-go twice; both experiences were great. I've tried the meatball sub, biscuits & gravy, and the egg white omelet. All were delicious, but the biscuits & gravy is my favorite -- creamy, spicy, porky goodness :) We were mistakenly overcharged on our second visit. Small, quaint little cafe with 10 tables. I was greeted and told to sit where ever I wanted. I chose the French Dip which comes with chips. I was offered an upgrade to fries or onion rings for $1.50, which I would've done had the onion rings been homemade but they were not. My sandwich was small but the right size for me. The thinly sliced roast beef had good flavor and the Au Jus wasn't too salty, which can often be the case. I got some homemade cherry cobbler TOGO. All the staff was friendly. First time visiting: Had today's special Roast Beef w/cheese sandwich was good but I should have had it cold heat make roast beef dry so it didn't agree with my stomach couldn't finish it. Took home a piece of the blueberry and lemon cake it was excellant and the price was right for my budget. Will visit again try something different on the menu. Gone to hell. Breakfast was not as good as it used to be. We waited twenty minutes for our orders. There was only 4 other people in there and 2 already were eating.I ordered corned beef hash and got shredded hash browns with shards of meat. It was obviously just a failed attempt to repurpose shredded hash browns to save money. The ratio in hash should be about equal or a little more tater. Not hash browns with a color change. The biscuits were bricks not fresh. Reheated from another day. The toast was well (Melba). Although the waitress said it was cooked to order. Most likely the day before. Not to mention the wrong toast. I ordered a ham cheese mushroom omelette. The items were virtually nonexistent This was a good little place for breakfast. Now it's below average at best. What a shame. I hope their baked goods are not suffering the same demise. read more

I am moving to Portsmouth soon and today I was there for the final walk through of my new condo. After it was finished I was starving so I turned to Yelp for a recommendation of a local restaurant. The Corner Cafe reviews piqued my interest and I decided to give it a try. I am sooooo glad I did because this little restaurant is great. It is home cooking at its best. I tried the Wednesday special of Meatloaf, homemade mashed potatoes, mushroom/onion gravy and fresh green beans. It was so yummy I couldn't pass up dessert and had homemade Butter Pecan cake. Everything was absolutely excellent. The service is fast and efficient and the help is very, very friendly. I am sure I will become a regular. After finding out that my brother (a disabled naval submarine veteran) was served a cold bologna and cheese sandwich on a hamburger bun for his Thanksgiving meal by the assisted living facility he is temporarily residing, I called Corner Cafe. I didn't have to say much and the sprung into action. They went above and beyond my expectations and delivered a wonderful and delicious turkey dinner. My 70 year old brother was taken aback by the care, kindness and thoughtfulness that came in that package. He was the envy of his fellow residents and most of the staff! Best sausage and gravy biscuits on the planet!!Dailey dinner specials are really good too. Very small place can seem kinda cramped. 4 star because I wish they were open on Sunday for breakfast and they do close early the rest of the week. If you want dinner, you better get there early because they close at 7. Otherwise I would give them 5 star. read more
