Did you know that Chesapeake Animal Services has a trailer in their parking lot for aluminum can donations? We do and after finding that being altruistic can make ya hungry, we started our hunt. We don't get this way often so we were using Yelp to help us out. And it guided us here, to Poppy's. Where they have the friendliest employees (and diners!), the best shredded hashbrowns (Breanna asked us if we wanted onions & throwing caution the wind we said sure!) and onions. Hubby opted for a meat sandwich, and yes, it is perfectly named, and I got the western omelet. The omelet was huge and tasty with equal parts onions, peppers, ham and lots of cheese. I was on the fence with French toast and boy am I glad I went with the omelet. There's just something special that griddle cooking adds to an omelet that takes it up a notch, plus, those onion laden hashbrowns were worth mentioning again. Hubby said his meat sandwich had so much meat that he could have skipped a few meals and still have enough meat to last days. The place was very busy. We snagged the last available table and with there being only one chef, we had quite the wait. Breanna made sure we weren't ignored and when our breakfasts arrived, we dug in and devoured. This is a little far from our house but soon as we left the man asked me when were we going back. As a wrap up, diner fare devotion at super reasonable prices (you get alot of food!) with happy, friendly people. Get there early, take a book or someone whose company you enjoy and settle in as you may have a wait that is worth it. Oh, we got all that food for less than $25 (not counting tax and tip). My absolute favorite hotdog place! Lunch time can be a bit busy but this little home in the wall is worth a wait. I've only picked up to go but there is seating available if you have time. Definitely one of Chesapeake/South Norfolk's hidden gems. If you've ever been to the Portlock area then this place fits right. I walked in and immediately felt like that one character who walks into the wrong place after seeing about retired veterans and older possible service workers. That feeling was immediately lost as I was greeted by a couple of the patrons waiting at the entrance waiting to pay. A few jokes about the crowd was made and laughter was shared. The corner shop is filled with a extended counter top with chair and maybe five table fit to serve 4 average sized people. While space isn't something that this place has a lot of, happy and satisfied customers is something they do. I took a sit at the counter and allowed the obvious regulars take the table since most came to socialize and enjoy a good meal. The waitress Bre was racing around the place serving and taking orders like she's been doing it for most of her life. The cook Leon, is the anchor of this establishment if you'd ask me, handling the flat top like a veteran cook. As I looked toward the grill I saw multiple tickets and food being created. He told me Saturdays are the busiest and he reassured me that I wasn't forgotten since I had been waiting for awhile. I didn't mind as it was like a show. I finally received my food and I couldn't have been anymore happier, the wait was worth it. The steak omelette was well seasoned and definitely filling. The pancake was rich and fluffy, and the shredded hash browns were just okay. Bre and Leon are the tag team that makes this place great. While it may not look fancy or have the cadence of some other well known establishments, this is just great food at a great price!!! Enjoyable breakfast in this place that does short order cooking well. I sat at the counter and drank my fill of coffee while looking over the posted menu board. Nothing outlandish or complicated here, so I went to my "go to" and ordered a ham and cheese omelet. A big omelet arrived on my plate (I asked for no toast or hashbrowns) and it was delicious. Cooked properly and very inexpensive. An excellent breakfast, thank you. The restaurant is not fancy, but it's not supposed to be. Best dog I've had in a while. Freshly grilled sausage that snaps with every bite adorned with a soft, moist bun. Workers are very kind and respectful and I always walk out with my hotdog within a few minutes of ordering. Located just off 464, so it's very convenient for a quick stop. read more

Went there for the first time and got the Poppy Dog. They use Boars Head Franks and they are great. The toppings were fresh and they use a melted cheese sauce which was hot and creamy. He has customers he knows by name, it's a nice small family ran restaurant (or seems to be), and they're so kind. Only issue I have is that I didn't particularly like the type of cheese used in the omlet, but I ate it anyway and it was good. We came right before breakfast ended. I love this place. I am a contractor from out of town working nearby. Service is fairly quick, for the person that only has a 30 min lunch break. The staff is courteous and polite. I have been treated like one of the regulars since the first time I went in there. Don't like Hot Dogs? No problem, the burgers are great, and you can get pretty much anything you want on them to include grilled onion. The spicy sausage is another of my favorites. Kevin's Philly Cheese Steak is the best Philly, that I have ever had. Simply stated, It is a great place. Just try to get there before noon, or after 1230 for lunch. The food here was really good. I had a bbq sandwich with slaw and fries. It's one of the daily specials. The sandwich was so yummy. The bread was fresh and the bbq was nice and meaty, Carolina style without red sauce. The sandwich was hearty and you get plenty of fries. We ordered to go but the service was awesome. I was underinmpressed. It's certainly a very cute place, clearly has its "family" of regulars and is very solid diner-ish fare. Lovely people. But the hot dogs were just...hot dogs. They are generous with the condiments, and you can pretty much order what you like. What it lacked was that menu of original combinations - it's pretty much "create your own". They are cooked properly, and quite delicious, but, FRANKly, i found nothing that would separate them from other joints. I'd most likely not be making a return visit, but understand why those who live closeby frequent the place (it's reasonably busy). Basically, if it's on your way, a solid place to grab a bite. But doesn't warrant a special trip. read more
