I have been here many times since .moving to Virginia, before they closed to renovate they were so good I gave them 5 stars ! However, since the reopening they went so downhill I can't even believe that it's the same place. We arrived and they were busy, we grabbed a table and the staff came over we got coffee. Then we ordered, while waiting we had to get there attention to get more coffee which in a busy place is no big deal. When the food came over the waitress said can I get you anything else? I said how about some utensils to eat with? She left and never came back! Thank God we got spoons for the coffee or we would have had to eat with our hands!!!! Extremely disappointed, the staff was walking around but no utensils came? Then I got up to pay and the prices must have gone up without them putting it on the menu? If you decide to go, i wish you luck! As for me if I plan on spending over $30 for breakfast I will be doing it someplace else. Cozy little spot with limited parking & seating, we went there for breakfast on yesterday, very first time for both of us, so wasn't really sure what to expect... it was very busy and crowded, which is understandable on a Saturday morning, of course we had to wait to be seated, which was about 35 minutes, the waitress was very nice and attentive, however, the food wasn't hot when brought to us, the cheese never melted in the grits, just kinda sat on top and I couldn't finish my eggs due to lack of temperature. I love this cafe. I come here while running around the area or visiting Maryview Hospital. The cafe is cute, making you feel as if you have stepped back in time to a mom-and-pop restaurant. The decor is Southern, basic, and refreshing. The service is ALWAYS great. I love that anyone on staff asks customers if they need anything when they pass your table. They create a welcoming and wholesome environment. The crowd here is usually very diverse and kind to each other. I have occasionally come into contact with the best storytellers here while eating their delicious cakes and pies. I love their burgers, desserts, pulled pork, and delicious coffee. The food we received was okay, but some of it came out late and a few of the sides from my wife's order never arrived. It feels like they just give you a total without showing the full breakdown until after they print the receipt. After reviewing mine, I realized I was charged for an item I never received. I found out today that Corner Cafe was sold to new owners in 2021, so I wanted to post an updated review. BEST grits I've ever had!! They are so creamy and good, I cannot even really describe it, but I could eat just a huge bowl of these grits and be happy. My supreme omelet was cheesy and delicious. We got hot coffee refills like clockwork. The table next to us ordered pancakes, and they were HUGE. I will be trying the pancakes next time. Service was nice, and the inside is decorated with iconic photos of Portsmouth. We will be back soon! read more

So, this was my second time visiting this restaurant. The first time I ordered the fish sandwich. It was ok, not great. Lacked flavor but was still ok. I had heard so many great things about the restaurant of course I needed to give it another chance. OK y'all, it's small. There are a total of 7 tables, but let me tell you, they stay busy! Small parking lot and the service was very good, both times. I think because it's small, it's like a family diner environment. Very comfortable. They have daily specials and I specifically wanted to go on Friday. I ordered the She Crab soup (they only have it like two days out of the week) and it was delicious! As my meal, I ordered the Friday special, fish and shrimp. I changed it up and got all shrimp. Nice size and very well seasoned. With the special comes hush puppies, fries, coleslaw and baked beans. BABY.... It was SO much food. Of course I didn't eat it all. Way too much, you could probably share it. The only thing that I wasn't crazy about was the coleslaw. It was a miss for me, but I'm also pretty picky with coleslaw. ‍. The one Friday we went there was no dessert but the first time they had homemade cakes, that I think they get from a local bakery. Terrific burgers. The weekend fish special is large and delicious. Fast, friendly service in a comfortable setting.

The chef salad tasted ok. I ordered a few different items including barbecue, a hot dog, pork chop, cheeseburger, red velvet cake, and chocolate cake. I may return again, but I was not wowed by any of the items. The staff were friendly. The restaurant is quaint, so expect minimum elbow room if you plan to dine in. read more

The value is always great, the place is very busy but they keep the drinks replenished and frequently check on you. Very friendly and a place that the locals go. Cute little place. The dining area was clean and quaint. Small menu, basic shirt order items. Better then going to fast food. Waitress was friendly and provided good service. Ordered turkey reuben which was good! Not best I ever had but, not terrible. I would order it again. Onion rings were nice and crispy. Overall enjoyed my experience and would come here again. Came with a salad (had everything in it and was pretty big) and a biscuit, pot roast/gravy with small potatoes, carrots served over rice. Food was simple, comfort food and a lot of it. Hubby had a slice of chocolate cake with cream cheese icing. All was good. Average pricing. The server was the owner, the waitress, cashier and bus person. She was very pleasant. Menu is mostly same as most (Burgers, fries, hot dog, I think BBQ, salad, small handful sandwich choices, chicken tenders I THINK, and a special (today was pot roast). Saw someone getting HUGE chili dog and onion rings and that looked good... I recommend this place and would go back and I'm picky. I went for breakfast, and the portion sizes are huge! I could only eat half of my burrito! The shop was packed and I was really enjoying my breakfast when it began to slow down and the customers waiting for take out started talking to the employees, this is where things get tricky. Although I loved the food, the conversation was how much they hated working for people, and how they are tired and stressed. Very disappointed because it really ruined my mood listening to them complain about their lives. I go out to eat to keep my mind off things and so I don't have to cook. My Dad and I were staying nearby for a few days to visit my son who's stationed there with the Navy. We found the Corner Cafe on the first morning of our stay and continued to eat there for 3 days straight during our stay because it was so good, close by, friendly, clean, and everything tasted so good!!! I enjoyed Corner Cafe with a friend for breakfast. I ordered a simple biscuits and gravy with bacon. Theresa had a breakfast platter. We both were treated friendly and made to feel like the entire staff cared. They had a cake that looked so delicious called a Strawberry Ice Cream Cake. I noticed it at first cut on a take out order. Then another take out order. This cake looked wonderful but I was too full from my biscuit, gravy and bacon to try. Next time I will. This place is a small Corner Cafe. VERY GOOD SERVICE, REASONABLE PRICE and the food is delicious. The tables seat 4 people and its down home feeling. Hurry down and try this one. read more

Drove past on my way home, saw that it actually appeared open (and not busy) this time and decided to finally give it a try. I came home and gathered everyone's order and called them up. The call was answered unpleasantly and I was hurriedly placed on hold... where I remain as I'm writing this. At 20 minutes of holding, I opened DoorDash up on my phone and ordered from somewhere else. Since then, I have chosen another dining option, gathered another round of food orders, placed said order, had it delivered and everyone has eaten. It has been 1 hour 40 minutes and some odd seconds (as pictured below). Maybe they check their reviews more frequently than their phones and someone will pick up. Maybe it will be in time for dinner. I've patronized this restaurant since before it was the corner cafe and it was nick's... I love the food and love the cakes...they are amazing and it's not the reason that I will no longer recommend or patronize this place. I placed a take out order for the Wednesday special... their meatloaf is great! I picked up my order and as it has become my custom with Covid... I tipped 20% on my take out order. I get to the car and see that they have added a 15%...FIFTEEN % take out surcharge ...are you kidding me? So I go in and the attitude! OMG! The apathetic attitude of the people there. First she tried to convince me that "all restaurants " do this... and then shows me on their printed menu...in 1pt font that orders are subject to a surcharge...which is not seen online since the menu is already in small print...nor was it mentioned when I placed the order. Fine . I wouldn't have tipped 20% if you are going to charge 15% to begin with... but please! Be more transparent about the charges and have your employees at least apologize for the mix up and not make it seem like " eh, who cares?" Apparently the corner cafe doesn't need my business that I have given over the years...I work at maryview and have always recommended the place since it was close and better than what is offered in the cafeteria... esp for pts families...but no more. We were so hungry and not familiar with the area but a quick google search led us to this little cafe for a late breakfast. The place was not busy when we arrived, the two employees seemed initially disinterested in our arrival and said nothing to us. A fellow leaving his table saw us just standing there looking around & told us to grab menus and take a seat. Once seated the waitress came over quickly and was friendly, not sure why we received such a cold welcome upon entering? Anyway things with the staff improved from there & our waitress ended up being very friendly. My husband had the corned beef hash with eggs and a biscuit and I had a breakfast bowl with mushrooms, green peppers and onions and asked for a pancake on the side, we both had coffee. Everything was good but slightly greasy, pancake has some crispy edges but was heavy & spongy. The hash was not your typical hash and had slices of what appeared to be deli corned beef sliced up in it but he enjoyed it, his eggs were cooked well. Thanks to the staff at Maryview that made us wait an hour for discharge papers we were ready to eat cardboard boxes if necessary so overall we were grateful for the fast arrival of the food and the hot coffee. The place appeared very clean, we did not use the restrooms. If I ever have to be in the area again I would return. Enjoy! read more
