Bottom Line Up Front: Plums Cafe is one of my favorite upscale (or as upscale as you can get for a) breakfast joints. The Food: We have been here several times and the food never disappoints. However, this review will focus on our most recent order: crab omelette. It was delicious. It comes with asparagus, dill, and hollandaise sauce. We selected the potatoes as the side instead of tomatoes and upgraded the toast to rosemary cheddar scone. The Setting: The restaurant itself offers a relaxed atmosphere that's clean and modern, with decent space between tables despite being a not-that-large establishment. There is plenty of outdoor seating, which is more ideal for larger parties. Note: Plums is located in a small strip mall with a small parking lot with small parking stalls. During the weekend when it's packed, olks with SUVs and minivans will have difficulty sliding in and even harder time opening your door to get out. The Service: The entire staff is warm, friendly, and quite helpful. Grade A training from management. The Complaint: For the first time after several visits, we actually have a reason to gripe. Our scone had a hair that appeared to be baked into it. Not sure if they're made in house or purchased from a vendor, but it kind of ruined our breakfast, which was for our wedding anniversary celebration. Our server was apologetic and got us a new scone, but I was a little disappointed she didn't give us a complimentary dessert or a discount on our bill to make it up to us. We stopped in here for breakfast after reading a lot of the great reviews. After a short wait, we were sat near a window. The service was over the top as they got right over to us took our order and shortly our food arrived. The food was great. The insides are nice and a lot of friendly people. The outside seating looked wonderful with the heaters, but we decided to sit inside. If you're looking for a great breakfast, and even some extras, you have to try this location. My first visit here was about a year ago and we ordered their famous Dutch Baby Pancake. In all honesty, it was not worth getting since the berries, lemon sauce, and everything made the pancake center soggy and unappetizing - if you plan on ordering this at least have everything on the side. We didn't know this dish takes around 30 minutes but it came out quicker. I decided to give this place another try and my second visit was on a Monday around noon. We made a reservation but it wasn't busy - we opted to sit indoors because it was chilly but the vibes were so different compared to outdoor seating, and I would suggest that outdoors are more lively for groups whereas indoor dining is extremely quiet with the music at low volume. We ordered the Berry Waffle & Flat Iron Steak w/ scrambled eggs (also served with toast). We also ordered two sides of sausages ($4 each) but never received it so we just chose to void it. Our server did ask if we wanted the berries and cream on the side for the waffle, but I declined because I wanted the presentation to look nice for the photo. Yet again I made the same mistake I did one year ago so regardless of presentation, just opt to have everything on the side because they serve the waffles with a big scoop of cream on top along with the berries which mare the entirety soggy. As for the steak, we asked for it to be cooked medium rare but it came out well-done and tough to eat. You also can't go wrong with cooking eggs but apparently you can because the scrambled eggs themselves were overcooked and dry. Went for Friday lunch and it was a very busy lunch. I was shown to my seat immediately and then the place got busy. I was able to order a mocktail immediately while waiting for my party. My drink came about 10 minutes later, while the drink orders for my party were placed and filled. The dinning room was clean and spacious. As it was a busy time after getting drinks it took a long time to place my order. My Brie blackberry, jam and bacon sandwich was awesome!!!!!! I ordered potatoes on the side but didn't care for them. My friend got their signature Dutch baby. I've had Dutch babies at other places before and I didn't care for this version. My friend didn't care for it either. For six dollars extra you could get berries added to it, and that probably would improve the flavor considerably, but my friend ordered it the traditional way with lemon n powdered sugar. There were so many comfort dishes that seemed tempting and I think I would be wanting to come back to try some of those other dishes. I decided to order a bloody Mary with Mezcal and it was delicious. A fun spot in Costa Mesa. This place had a wonderful menu and a huge drink selection. I'd try it again. Lovely service and it was packed at 9am on Sunday. Definitely recommend reservations because we only got seated thanks to a no-show reservation. Parking is decent and dogs were allowed in the patio. The dutch baby is just like the one at The Original Pancake House which is also delicious and very filling. They came out quickly and offered plenty of syrup and powdered sugar. I am extremely disappointed and outraged by this restaurant. It was the only place open on Thanksgiving in the area, and we were actually excited to dine here. But what happened afterward was shocking. They discriminated against Asians. They didn't give us water or plates--nothing was provided unless we specifically asked for it. We ordered the Dutch Baby with berries, but what they served was completely plain. When we asked the server where the berries were, she brought us an extremely small portion of fruit, and didn't even give us any syrup. Later she asked if everything was okay--I said of course not--and she said she would "add a little more fruit." I also ordered orange juice. Every other table received a normal-sized glass, while I was given a tiny one. Only after I asked why it was so small did she bring me a larger glass. When we checked out, they charged me $10 for that one glass of orange juice. You might as well just rob people at that point--should I be grateful you at least gave me a cup of juice? Their attitude was terrible from beginning to end. We hadn't even finished eating when they came over and started clearing our plates, clearly trying to rush us out. We went here for my best friend's birthday and had an okay experience. We had a reservation for 11:30am and were not sat at our table till about 11:50am. I understand they were very busy but 20 min is a pretty long time to wait when your table should be reserved. The ambience was cute although we had a table that was basically on the side walk on the outer edge of the patio. The drinks were very good and balanced. However my main issue was the service. We were barely checked in on throughout our meal, frequently going 30 min without seeing a server. Towards the end of the meal, we had old plates of food sitting in front of us for probably 45 min without anybody coming to see if we needed boxes or if we were finished. I finally approached the staff and asked if someone could come clear the plates from our table and provide boxes. However one person came and just cleared my plate only. Overall Plums Cafe was good, not great. Some things were solid, some things were mid, and a couple things were straight misses. Not sure if we hit them on a weird day or if it just did not live up to the hype for us, but that latte might be the only thing I go back for. I ended up ordering the Hangover Burger, even though it sounds funny at a brunch spot, but it actually was pretty good. The burger itself was cooked perfectly medium rare, super flavorful, runny egg, bacon, good onions, all that. I paired it with their hash browns and that part was kind of a bummer. Hash browns were soggy, not crispy, which is the whole point of hash browns. I had to throw ketchup on there just to revive it a little. My biggest complaint though is the English muffin they use as the bun. Nah. It got soggy right away, fell apart, especially with the egg. It just does not work as a burger bun. If they switched it to a regular bun, that burger would be way better. I would order it again, but it is not something that would make me say we need to come back here. Now the thing everyone talks about is the Plums Famous Dutch Baby. This thing comes out looking insane. Like five inches tall, huge, full of berries, looks like a masterpiece. Then you take a bite and it is literally just a giant dough ball with no flavor. We literally had to ask the waitress how you are supposed to eat it because we were so confused. She told us to use the berries, squeeze lemon all over it, then sprinkle powdered sugar on top. Once we did that, it was actually good. But by itself? Not it. It tricks you with the looks for sure. My wife's experience was rough too. They messed up her food three separate times even though we clearly asked for scrambled eggs. Each time it came back wrong. The waitress was super sweet and apologetic, but they never comped anything which was kind of surprising after three mistakes. The one thing that absolutely slapped though was the banana twist latte. We sat on the patio and as we were walking to our table, we noticed several parties enjoying the popular giant cinnamon roll. It looked delicious, but we opted to pass this time. Our server was nice and attentive. We ordered the Boysenberry, Bacon & Brie Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Tuscan Chicken Sandwich, both with fries. The Boysenberry, Bacon & Brie Grilled Cheese Sandwich was spectacular. Sourdough isn't typically my first choice of bread, but this bread was perfectly grilled and packed with so much flavor, each bite melted in my mouth. Highly recommend. The Tuscan Chicken Sandwich came on a baguette and was drier than expected so I think a little more pesto would've helped. The onion dipping sauce that came with the fries won us over. It somehow tasted like a really smoky BBQ sauce to me, which is why I finished both ramekins. More please! We also tried the Lavender Dream Lemon Drop. I felt the lavender flavor was nonexistent. It just tasted like triple sec and no sugar rim was provided. I'd skip this one next time, but their house lemonade was really refreshing and tart. This review is for their gigantuous cinnamon bun and their breakfast burrito. My first time at plums cafe about 10 years ago wasn't Yelp worthy. I remember the cinnamon bun being mediocre and dry. But I recently returned and attempted it again and it was the total opposite! Warm, gooey and sweet, it was dessert for breakfast. Not to mention the size of the bun was bigger than Sasquatch's head. I ordered the breakfast burrito as my main. They grill the burrito so it keeps its formation and add a light crunch as you bite into the halved burrito. There is this creamy cheese sauce they add and it binds the eggs, rice and tortillas very...VERY well. Not one morsel fell from the burrito! The crispy potatoes on the side gave a delightful crunch. I believe they make their ketchup in house so dip dip away! I also loved the robust, savory salsa sauces that comes with this burrito dish. Reviewing this food item is actually making me crave it again! Service could have been better. We came on a weekday and had reservations for 7 but when we arrived 10 mins early, they informed us that they gave our table away to another group and they were waiting for that group to leave ...? They quickly made up another table for us but the restaurant patio wasnt even half full so I didn't appreciate the lack of thought in our reservation. read more

What a find! The restaurant has a full bar and an extensive menu of both breakfast and lunch items. I got the bahn mi, and it was wonderful. The service was super slow, but our waiter was friendly and outgoing. Big parking lot, but it was full (we eventually got a spot). There is also a really cool Tokyo-inspired coffee place next door which I also recommend. I love that places like Plum's exist and seem to be thriving. I've been going to plums since I first moved to OC almost 14 years ago and i always say it is my all time favorite brunch spot. I went on Saturday with my mom and we haven't been in a long while. My usual coconut french toast was good but I noticed that the french toast is a lot smaller than I remember (which I understand everything is getting smaller these days). They also load it up with the fruits but I think it was too much fruit for how small the french toast were. My mom ordered the Santa Fe Eggs Benedict (also a favorite of ours), sauce tasted a little different, can't describe what's different but miss the old sauce better. There also a lack of care. My mom and I remember Plums as a restaurant where they really cared for their guests and the food they were serving. Something was just off this time. My husband and I went in for lunch today. I noticed the menu changed and it said, "PLUMS POTATOES CONTAIN PORK." As a Jew and a vegetarian I was horrified. I asked the server how old the menus were. He said they were newer, about 6 months old. I then asked him if that they had always had pork in the potatoes. He went back and asked and they said for 30 years they have cooked the potatoes in bacon fat. I was shocked. I've been eating at Plums since the early 2000s. We stayed and I ordered the eggs benedict without meat and substituted tomatoes and had tomatoes on the side to avoid potatoes with bacon fat. Midway through my meal I cut a piece of egg and baguette to find a sizable piece of bacon. I was upset given the whole conversation with the server earlier. Our server did not notice both my husband and I raising our hands. Another server noticed but only came after he saw me take a picture of my plate. He was quick to dismiss it until I asked him to smell it and he confirmed it was indeed bacon. He took my plate, removed it from the check and gave us a $20 off card for a future visit. We will not be returning. I am aware food is cooked on a shared grill, but using bacon fat without disclosing this to patrons for decades is not okay. I really did not like the food we ordered at Plums Cafe. The restaurant was beautiful and crowded this Thursday afternoon. We made reservations on OpenTable, which was super easy. The reviews there and on Yelp were good and I expected our dining experience to be the same. We got off on the right foot when we arrived at checkin at the restaurant. Camille was her name and she noticed I was wearing a Sacramento Kings sweatshirt and mentioned that she was from Sacramento too. She was super friendly and perfect as the host. We were seated quickly and given water and menus. TBH, we were there for their popular DutchBaby we saw in the photos on Yelp. Most of these photos has mixed berries in them, but the menu item didn't include berries, so please make note of the extra charge for the added fruit. My wife ordered the DutchBaby with added mixed berries and I ordered the Chicken and Waffles. The waiter serving us was raving about the restaurant's own waffle batter recipe, so I had to try it. Let me break it down like this: PLUMS FAMOUS DUTCH BABY - added Mixed Berries The menu reads, "A baked, deep dish pancake, butter, powdered sugar & lemon." It also comes with Maple Syrup. This was big and covered the entire plate and looked incredible. It was crispy, flaky, warm and had a wonderful texture. The added mixed berries were tart and in excellent contrast to the maple syrup. Overall, this was good but, in my book, not extraordinary. It was lacking something that would make this dish "famous", in their words. One thing my wife did to improve it, was to mix the powdered sugar and juice from the lemons to make a glaze. That made it more special and definitely tasted better, but still couldn't finish it because it was so big. Probably wouldn't order that again. HOT HONEY CHICKEN & WAFFLES The menu reads, "Fried chicken lollipops served with a perfectly golden waffle, paired with hot honey & country turkey sausage gravy." This was 50% failure and I instantly regretted ordering this. Plums makes their own batter and the waffle was good, but not great, and an equivelent could be found almost anywhere. The chicken lollipops were terrible. They were overcooked and lacked any flavor. No, my tastebuds are not broken. Nothing could help these chicken drums. I dipped them in the hot honey, the country turkey sausage gravy and even my wife's maple syrup! Nothing I could to to revitalize the moisture that were cooked out of them. You do know how hard it is to overcook chicken legs, right? Anyway, I ate the waffle and some of my wife's meal. Those berries were good, if I forgot to mention. Let's just say I would not order this if I ever return . I'm not going to say I wouldn't come back entirely, because it appears that Plums was voted Best Brunch Spot in OC by OpenTable this year, 2025. But by the experience we had, I have to wonder what other patrons are ordering. read more

There's a lot of good brunch places in Costa Mesa but nothing is quite like Plums. I've visited Plums on several occasions and every time it's pretty delicious. Seating is available inside or on the patio. The lattes are delicious here and so are all of their brunch items. Today I tried the Vietnamese Pork & Egg Bowl. It had a ton of flavors and a lot of meat on it. I'm just not sure I loved the quality of the meat, but other than that it was quite tasty and the portion was huge. I got the lavender lemon drop martini which was okay & very strong. For food I got the tuna salad sandwich with their homemade fries. These were tasty. Prices were okay. Came here at the recommendation of friends who dined a few days earlier. We were in town for my wife's birthday and decided to bring her here for breakfast. Food was good and fresh although it did take a while. Service was good and the restaurants outside seating was very nice. Would definitely come back if were visited the area again. read more
