The parking here fills up quick. We arrived about 15 minutes before they opened (we didn't check the hours before hand) and there was already a line of people waiting to get in. Which we took as a good sign. They do have a couple of benches outside if you have to wait to be seated. Once they opened we were seated right away by friendly and smiling staff. Once our order was taken it didn't take long to get. Everything was served piping hot and delicious. The crab omelette did not disappoint. Our coffee and waters stayed topped off. Whenever I visit my friends in Orange County, we always have lunch at Cappys Cafe. And, we always order the same thing , the prime rib melt even though their breakfasts look delicious! This time it was delicious as always, but skimpy on the Swiss cheese. The meat was piled high and tender. I would say that this is my favorite diner in Newport Beach. I say diner because it is like a traditional American diner, not so much a retro diner. It's located on beautiful 101 in North Newport Beach. Very close to the HB border. Parking is really easy, they have a free lot attached on both sides of the restaurant. Inside is also very large with two different dining areas, as well as many different type of seating options from booth, to table, to counter. The menu is also awesome, it has a lot of unique items on it and it's the sort of place where you can get something new each time. Our server was very polite but there was a bit of a delay getting our food items out, but it was very busy when we stopped in for Saturday morning brunch. The food quality and taste here really beats out the competition. Everything that we ordered was honestly fantastic. I ordered the Seafood Benny with Wild Caught Crab Meat and switched to the thick cut sourdough toast as the bottom, which I would recommend. The crab was fresh, the hollandaise had great flavor, and the eggs were cooked perfectly. I honestly loved every bit of this dish and would highly recommend ordering it. Saw a tiktok the other day and thought I need to try this place. I love breakfast and this quaint little restaurant did not disappoint. Super cute , nice indoor and outdoor seating. I tried the ham scramble and it was big. If you are a small eater you could definitely share this. The sourdough toast was a generous size and just lightly toasted (exactly how I like it). Pancakes are super huge and scrumptious with a hint of sugar and vanilla. Recommend! My sister and I split the CA omelette that was chock-a-block full of bacon. The cheese and avo were on top. I actually used some of the avo to smash on top of the toast then used 2 poached eggs from the pancake combo to make avocado toast! Price was a little steep ($54 for 2 entrees + 20% tip). My wife and I visited Cappy's Cafe for lunch. She ordered the fish and chips and I got the Cobb salad. Getting the order in was a challenge. While we were seated and given menus and water promptly, it was a good 25-minute wait before we got an order in. I stopped one server and asked if we could put our order in and she said she would let our server know. After 10 minutes, I asked another who said she would tell our server too. Then another who said the same thing. Finally, a smiling woman, our server, took our order. In the middle of our meal she stopped by our table to say that she was taking a break and someone else would help us. As we finishing our meal, two people came by to take our plates while we were literally eating from them --- and we had to stop them from doing so. As for the food, the batter for the fish for soggy (not great, when you're looking for a crispy fish on a fish and chips plate). The waffle fries weren't crispy either. The Cobb salad had tired ingredients (brown at the edge lettuce) and hard bacon that seemed like it had been prepared in the morning. (We ate at about 1 pm.) The ambiance of the cafe was very good --- buzzy with a friendly vibe and nice ocean inspired decor. My mom ordered the fish n chips. I would give my item 3/5 because compared to Ricardos im SJ, this one lacked the flavor, the ingrediants and was more expensive and lacked the value. Maybe its the location/demographic. Not horrible , just "meh". My moms order was better. Chunky fish in beer batter with onion rings instead of fries. The onion rings were bomb! Crispy. Large, and sooo good! The quality of the fish was equally good. Reminded me of fish and chips consumed on the southern hemisphere . I got the veggie scramble, and it was a good portion of food: lots of veggies and potatoes with very thin slices of avocado on top. It was over $20 for that one scramble. Parking isn't the easiest, so it's best if you go before 9 a.m. It's right on the street, so no view. The back patio that is on the parking lot has a small view of I don't know what, but I wasn't that impressed. I hate to bad review local spots but the Breakfast we had was straight up sub par at best. The Pancakes, eggs, waffles, biscuits and gravy were all absolutely less then average. From our experience, anyone that rated this better then a 3 or said its amazing is nuts. Maybe it was an off day but i dont see how thats possible. Breakfast is so easy to make good. Its hard to mess it up but they did for sure. The bacon also had a gassy or weird off taste from cooking it. My wife also said the strawberries she added to her waffles tasted previously frozen and the whipped cream had a not good flavor to it. Top to bottom everything we has was bad.
