Celebrated a birthday for a family member here back in the Spring. Texted the restaurant and received an immediate response in regards to availability. I was told it was first come first served for the dock view. That meant we'd have to be there at 5pm sharp when the restaurant opened at 5pm. Being that it was a 5min walk from my home, that wasn't problem. When we arrived, there were two other tables being served but luckily we procured a great spot! Service was friendly and obsequious. I brought my favorite bottle of Opus and from there we perused the menu. We decided to try a little bit of everything since it was our first time. The food came out at a good pace and everything was beautifully presented. I must admit everything was absolutely delicious and the relaxing environs made for an unforgettable evening. We walked to the dock and took some pictures of the marina and enjoyed a pleasant stroll back home. Reservations are necessary. We told the hostess this was our first time here and had requested a table close to the harbor... she remarked that 'everyone' wants a close table to the harbor so ...no for us. Ha! Seating is very close to other tables ... our 'neighbors' were loud and boisterous... we found it hard to converse and even relax until they left. We normally share a dinner and there are added charges for that... $5. for the first share. $8. for the 2nd. No biggie... we prefer small plates. The food was very good. The service was fine...There is lots of competition for that in Newport. Shorebird is much roomier, has the same view, validated parking and great food as well. You have to REALLY love The Dock to go again and they are normally booked up so many do! read more

A perfect restaurant for a night out! I would honestly give a 5/5 in all areas to The Dock, the food was exquisite and the staff were all very friendly and attentive. The space is a bit small but very lovely and you can see the harbor right from where you eat. There's even a private walkway you can go to and take pictures or enjoy the scenery. We got the halibut, scallops, lamb, duck, and (not pictured here) the soup de jour which, for us, was the gazpacho. Overall I would say everything was a delight to eat, everything was tender, juicy, and had just the right amount of sauce and toppings. For me, the soup was the stand out though, one of the best gazpachos I've ever had and I'm not usually a cold soup kind of person. The dock is an upscale seafood restaurant that I believe may use French inspired techniques? Which I would say is the only critique I could have of it. Everything was so tender and perfect, some dishes started feeling a little one note (a very very good note though). There were a variety of ingredients that came on all the plates that, but felt like they never veered far enough to create a more interesting balance for the palate. A classic complaint of my steak too juicy, my lobster too buttery. But technique-wise everything was executed perfectly but I would say if you are more of an adventurous eater you should definitely talk to your waiter/waitress and ask for their advice. We recently went to the dock for my mom's birthday, and it was an unforgettable experience! First off, Debra was on phone duty, and she was incredibly helpful as we navigated flight delays and changes to the schedule. She was able to accommodate us despite many complications on our end, so we are really grateful and really appreciative of Debra! In terms of food, we loved the pork chop and the halibut. The risotto and the potatoes that came with each of these went so well with the meats. They also have an extensive wine list, and the service was really great. The view is so hard to capture via photos, so I tried to do my best here. At night it can get a little cold, so they have heat lamps above some of the tables on the edge so you don't get too cold. read more

Went here for a dinner date on a Friday night and boy was it busy. Luckily, we had reservations since this place is quite small and intimate. The crowd was mostly an older one but rowdy nonetheless having a great time with their cocktails. It was super dark inside but it certainly projected a romantic vibe. The cocktails were super delicious and I particularly liked the Endless Summer but it was a pretty penny since it was served with Clase Azul tequila. What we ate: Roasted Beet Terrine - while not visually appealing as a terrine (looked like cube of glob), it was delicious nonetheless, and what you would expect out out of roasted beet salad. Octopus Carpaccio - This was a visually pretty yet tasty dish. Surprisingly, not too chewy since it was carefully sliced thin as a carpaccio would be. Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast - I really enjoyed this dish and was very comforting while not being too heavy. Spiced NZ Rack of Lamb - I believe this is a signature dish and was great without being gamey. Overall, really solid dishes and I was pleasantly surprised. The waitstaff was also great. read more

Came here for my birthday dinner. This is an upscale restaurant with an ocean view. The service was excellent and the drinks were strong. They give you a complimentary appetizer: a crostini with salame and an olive garnish which was a nice opening. We ordered filet mignon for our entrees and a molten chocolate cake for dessert. Filet Mignon- The meat was so tender and juicy. It was served with mashed potatoes, a medley of vegetables which were fresh and had a lovely crunch. A savory mushroom sauce tied the flavors together. Molten Chocolate Cake- This had a nice dense chocolate cake base, but the best part is the gooey molten chocolate center! Creamy vanilla ice cream and berries balance the flavors out. Second time here--requested the waterfront table and had the first (I think?) seating on a Sunday night at 515. The second visit was just as perfect as the first. Service was impeccable with warm and genuine servers--- Drinks were fabulous: Catalina and the Lito Martini that my partner and I both loved. As always the little amuse bouche of ahi tuna was tasty---then we got the hamachi crudo: AMAZING. The avocado sorbet was a first for me and super unique alongside the foam and the jalapeño. 10/10. The octopus carpaccio was very light considering the chorizo, potato, and romesco sauce. Very well done and good proportion and combination of flavors. We both got the halibut. The marriage of flavors was so well thought out. Then the molten lava cake with the Hazlenut ice cream was a nice touch to a perfect evening. This place is a gem. The day before Mother's Day, my daughter Maggie's mother-in-law and I hosted a beautiful baby shower for her at The Dock in Newport Beach, and it could not have been more perfect. The food was absolutely divine, the service was impeccable, and the waterfront setting was breathtaking. From the outside, the entrance is quiet and understated, but the moment you walk in, you are greeted by sparkling water, boats gently passing by, and one of the most stunning views in Newport Beach. First, I want to acknowledge that the waitstaff was attentive, professional, and genuinely accommodating. The food was also very good. Unfortunately, we will not be returning because of the excessive $75 per bottle corkage fee. That charge is so unreasonable that it overshadowed an otherwise enjoyable dining experience. After discussing it with several friends, I learned they have also chosen not to return for the same reason. The owner's clearly are discouraging guests from bringing their own wine and instead pressure them into purchasing bottles from the restaurant's wine list. While restaurants certainly have the right to set their own policies, this fee is simply out of proportion and, in our view, results in us not returning. read more

We made a same day reservation for two. We were told we would be 3 tables away from the bulkhead. When we arrived the hostess takes our names and tells us to follow. Before she turns away she gives my husband and I once over. For clarity we asked if there was a dress code, and she said California Casual. We were wearing shorts. Then she sat us at the fourth table. When we brought it up she said. "No, this is the table you get." I am Latina and my husband is Caucasian, and I truly feel she either did not like my background or our perceived economic status. We waited for the waitress explained our situation and left. My favorite Newport restaurant. I came last year around this time and had an amazing dish. Last weekend we booked a last minute reservation and dropped in. We were greeted by the same hostess who was so wonderful and kind- making sure we liked the table and asked if we preferred a different one. Sat in the section that was serviced by Frankie (same outstanding server we had last year). He was memorable then and memorable this time too! We even told him about the fresh halibut and risotto we had last time and although not on the menu that evening, he talked to Chef and Chef made it just for us. Can we say EXCEPTIONAL service?? The ambiance seals the deal with its serenity - like you're spending the evening in a peaceful warm lit dockside with your friends. Came in for our reservation and got seated right away. Was greeted very warmly by Deborah. We got to our table and enjoyed the view of the dock and outside. Nice cool crisp breeze coming inside the restaurant. Comfortable tables and chairs. Started with their Tuna Tartar amuse. Super fresh and delicious. A perfect way to get our appetite going. Girlfriend got the Catalina cocktail and she absolutely loved it. It was so good she got two. I got a glass of Austin Hope Cabernet. Can never go wrong with Austin Hope. Solid Paso Cab. I started with the Peach Salad. Omg. One of the best salads I've ever had. Super on point. Fresh peaches, basil pesto, burrata cheese, arugula, pecans, with a light balsamic vinaigrette. Amazing salad. Girlfriend got the Octopus. She absolutely loved it. One of the best she's ever had. The presentation and the flavors were phenomenal. We then got two entrees. The Duck and the Lamb. Both tender, juicy, cooked to perfection, and delicious. The potatoes and veggies that came with both dishes paired perfectly. Highly recommend both these dishes for your main course. Service was superb. Frankie was our server and he was on top of all his tables tonight. Especially ours. I've heard so much about The Dock and how it is one of the best places in all of OC to dine. The Dock is one of our most favorite restaurants in the world! We don't come here often, but when we want a special experience for ourselves or our dearest family or friends this is where we bring them. The setting is the perfect bayside location, right on the water with a private dock in case you want to sail up to dinner! The room is intimate without being crowded or loud. The service is the highest quality you could possibly hope for. Our server was polite, well informed, friendly and helpful. She kept our glasses filled, and was unobtrusive, (and very pretty) The menu is simple but everything is perfectly executed. My pork chop was the best I have ever had. The scallops wrapped in bacon were perfection, the crab appetizer was impressive! My affogato for dessert was an all-time favorite. Always a great experience, but I have a complaint from my last visit. We ordered 2 bottles of champagne from their menu and brought 1 bottle (0.75 liter) of wine. We were still charged a corkage fee. We started off with cocktails and wine of course ;) As an appetizer we got their octopus and it tasted so good. I got their salmon and they cooked it exactly the way I had asked. My husband treated me to The Dock this week in celebration of my birthday. Upon arrival, we were promptly seated. The dining room is al fresco style, and has a fully open side bordering the boat dock. It was a very charming space. A little chilly that evening- I wish there was a bit more heating, but thankfully I brought a coat to cover my legs and we were seated next to a mini fire pit. The food was AMAZING! For the first course, I enjoyed the Crispy Octopus which (if you're a fan of octopus like I am) was delicious, fresh, and flavorful. For my second course, I had the Duck which was equally delicious. Not greasy at all, and the portion size was perfect. All flavors worked flawlessly together and it was as pleasurable to eat as it was to look at- the presentation was nice. For drink, I had the Old Newport (the restaurant's old fashioned). The bartender was not at all stingy with the bourbon (bordering ALMOST on heavy handed)- but hey...I was there to celebrate! A charming lady was working the room, ensuring that all of the guests were enjoying their meals (I presume she was the owner?). Always such a nice touch at local eateries like this, and I might add is a reason I enjoy dining at local establishments in Newport. Our server was also very attentive and kind. We've been going here since 2017. They been there longer. But we love it. It's Newport's not so best kept secret. The staff is experienced-5 star fine dining level. The wine is great. I love going and asking for a wine pairing with the meal. It's on the water. There is a dock and it's a small and intimate. There are two dinner seating 5/5:30 and 7:30/8. My table of four ordered four appetizers to share and two entrees to share total, and it was plenty of food. Everything was delightfully fresh and unique. My favorite was the crab beignets, which were a special that night and not on the menu. For entrees, we ordered the prosciutto wrapped Maine diver scallops and the maple leaf farms duck breast. Both were excellent, and cooked to the perfect level. The waiter also mentioned that the lamb and pork are their specialities. The restaurant environment is also really nice -- you're sitting right next to the water in an open air space. They have plenty of space heaters to keep you warm outside; it was comfortable. read more

Excellent food, beautiful waterfront views, and most of all top notch service! Our server Eric went above and beyond to make sure we had the best experience and a memorable birthday dinner. I have dined at luxury restaurants that felt stuffy, but this restaurant made you feel so welcomed and celebrated and they genuinely care about their dining guests. Their entire staff team really did a fantastic job and I am so excited to go back again in the future. We were a party of four and the food was absolutely delicious. Blue crab beignets were a crowd pleaser, duck was a bit over cooked for my liking (but still yummy), cantaloupe soup (of the day) was very appreciated by the table! Drinks were overpriced but Quite good! This restaurant is clearly positioning itself as a fine dining establishment, especially with the prices it charges (~$20 appetizers, $25 drinks). The food actually justifies it - delicious, flavorful, great ingredients. We spent over $700 for dinner for 4! (With only one bottle of wine, 2 drinks). As such, I expect a certain level of professionalism to adhere to their pricing aspirations, and that is where restaurant fell short and I would not come back. For example, I had to always remind them to refill my water glass! My husband ordered a bottle of wine off their menu, and they actually came back saying they mispriced it on the menu and the actual price is more than double and they are happy to split the middle! (Like what?! Any reputable place would honor the menu price!). At the end, the lady abruptly said that the party has already arrived for our table and we must leave (no soft framing or apologies for the inconvenience, just an abrupt "get out now"). In fairness, they did warn us of two seatings when we were making reservations, but there is still a way to deliver the message in a more polite and welcoming way. I've dined at a LOT of fine dining places and sadly, wouldn't recommend this one because their aspirations (and price) do not justify the experience.
