I chose The Cannery for my birthday dinner because I had such a great first experience and loved the beautiful setting on the bay. Given the choice of anywhere to go, I picked The Cannery over several other restaurants because I was looking forward to a relaxing, special evening. Unfortunately, that wasn't our experience. I completely understand that the patio was reserved for a large party, but our table inside was incredibly hot. Both my date and I, as well as our server, had beads of sweat throughout dinner. It made it difficult to relax and enjoy what should have been a fun birthday celebration. The highlight of the evening was our server, Bree. She was kind, attentive, and did everything she could to make us comfortable. Later, she insisted on moving us to the patio, and once we were outside, the difference was night and day. Unfortunately, by then we had spent so much of the evening overheated that we were drained and the mood had already shifted. The food and service were very good. My disappointment was with the overall dining experience. I also reached out privately to share this feedback before posting a review but never received a response, which was disappointing. Great restaurants aren't remembered only for their food. They're remembered for how they make people feel. I left feeling overheated instead of celebrated, and I hope that's something that can be improved for future guests. Recently discovered happy hour at this spot and so glad I did! There are a few different bars to sit at, as well as tables in the bar area for HH! The Ryu roll was by far my favorite sushi roll, the chili crunch actually gave it a kick. Our other favorite was the Pablo Escolar roll which was light and fresh but still flavorful. I am not normally a scallop fan, but the Peruvian Scallops with blue crab was fantastic! This is my first time at the cannery, and I went out with some coworkers to try it for the very first time. Now I'm very used to seafood, but what I'm not used to is the wait. For the amount of people that were in the restaurant during that time, it felt like it took a while for all of our food to come out. Albeit we did have a pretty large party, about eight people or so. Adding on to this as well, I ordered the lobster roll. While the lobster was very fresh, delicious, and succulent, and the roll in its shell itself was very tasty as well, there were a couple of cracked shells and bones within my lobster roll that I had to manually get out of my teeth. I thought that was a little bit dangerous as well. If you're going to make a good lobster roll, please make sure to have no bones and no missing shells, because it can cause some of your diners, especially the older ones, to choke and maybe even hurt themselves. read more

I've been here multiple times, and every visit has been fantastic. The service is consistently amazing--everyone is friendly, attentive, and makes you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. One of my favorite things about coming here is enjoying breakfast by the water. There's something so relaxing about starting the day with a beautiful Newport Beach view. This is a beautiful location and restaurant, with the emphasis on the decor and atmosphere. We had reservations for 8:00 p.m. but were told no one in leaving, so we have to wait. We sat down at 8:30 p.m. Right from the start, I told the hostess that we had a handicapped person who can't do stairs. She offed no help or assistance to us. We parked outside and walked up a ramp full of chairs and potted plants. The staff offered no assistance, so I had to move everything myself. After waiting 30 minutes we sat down. At 8:40 p.m we ordered our meals, and at 9:25 p.m. our food came. That is a long time to wait with no bread. Our appetizer came with strange sauces. Calamari should have a tangy sauce to dip it in, instead of that we were given mayo and shrimp sauce. One small slice of lemon. Not the best. I was shocked by my highly recommended halibut which came with no potatoes or rice. The meals came with no bread at all. The fish was seasoned well, but came with no sauce or butter on top. It was dry with corn and pickled onions. I told my waiter after such a long wait, that I was not happy with the fish. His response was also shocking to all of us. He said, "Just try it, you need to eat some." I was hoping he might say, "Let me get you something else, or can I get some sauce for that?" Our waiter came to us a few times, but the rest of the time, he disappeared in the back. I had to ask others to help us. He was friendly but not available. Five stars for the interior design, three stars for the food and price, and two stars for service. Parking is an extra $25 with tip. This restaurant is almost impossible for a handicapped person, that is unless they have a plan how to assist. The ramp will not get you to the hostess stand. There are stairs everywhere. We came here for Memorial Day weekend and were pleasantly surprised that we were able to get a reservation for 6 the same evening, which was a huge plus. The service was a bit slow at times, but everyone was very friendly and our waitress did apologize for the delays, which we appreciated. As for the food, overall everything tasted very good with just a few exceptions. The calamari was lightly fried to perfection and perfectly salted. The accompanying sauce was delicious. The sourdough bread rolls were another standout -- soft and warm on the inside with a crispy exterior. The branzino was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and very fresh. The burger was equally delicious. The bun was fresh and perfectly toasted, the bacon was honestly some of the best I've had and cooked perfectly, and the meat was cooked to the perfect temperature with a great balance of cheese and condiments. The fish and chips was slightly too bready for my taste, but the fish itself tasted very fresh and was well seasoned. The carrot cake was decent. The cream cheese-to-cake ratio was good, but I do wish the cake itself had been a bit softer. The one dish that really missed the mark was the lobster roll. While the lobster itself was delicious and perfectly cooked, there was simply too much bread and the bread-to-lobster ratio felt off. Also, it comes cold by default, so if you prefer it hot, make sure to request it. The fries that accompanied it were also too soggy. That said, the food overall tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared, and because of that, I would definitely come back to try more items on the menu. read more

Unfortunately our dining experience during lunch was a disappointment. We had plans to go to a different restaurant, and last second we decided To give the cannery a try. The hostess was extremely friendly and welcoming and so was the bus boy. Our server probably interacted with us three times, once when we sat down, then when she took our order and then when she gave us our check. Not once did she ask us if our food was ok or if we needed anything. I had to flag down the bus boy to get some more water. For the food, it was ok not the best. I had a chicken salad, the chicken was extremely dry. It was my first time here after hearing so many things about this place. I've heard both good and bad. I decided it was time to give it a try. I had a great experience! We walked in with no reservations on a Friday night. I asked the hostess how long it would be and she said it would be about an hour and a half wait, but that we can go upstairs and it's open seating at the bar/lounge. We headed on upstairs where it was busy and kind of high energy, but there was a couple tables open. They even had a bar for just the sushi bar which was cool. We took a seat in the lounge area and our server came promptly. Overall, I thought our server did an excellent job given how loud and busy / chaotic it was. We ordered apps- we got a caesar, crab cake, and a yellowtail hand roll. The caesar was alright not my favorite, would skip next time. Crab cake was bomb!!! The green sauce it came with idk what it was but it was to die for. Yellowtail hand roll was fantastic. Fresh tasty fish. Sushi comes out relatively quickly too. For entrees, my mom got an Alaskan Halibut, which she loved. I got 1 more yellowtail hand roll and a "911 Roll". 911 Roll was big and tasty. Hand roll was so fire I had to get the 2nd one. Sushi here is 10/10 amazing. My mom loved her fish dish as well. It was kind of loud here so maybe not a great spot for a family dinner with your elderly grandparents. We inadvertently showed up on a Saturday at 3:15 and were told that the line with 20 people already in it, was for the happy hour that starts at 3:30. We jumped in line like good the good (and eager) happy hour guests that we are. They wait until exactly 3:30 to let everyone in. We all get in find our seats. The bar starts poppin' It fills up with beautiful young people and it's just great people watching. We ordered a few things. Drinks are NOT on happy hour. Just a few good food options. The rolls are all pretty good. But I'm a sushi snob, so I can find fault with any American style rolls. But they are good for what they are. The drinks are kinda pricey. Normal for the area $18-$20. Beers are kinda normal priced at $9-$11 The bartenders are super friendly and efficient. They have the whole happy hour thing down. I was excited to try this restaurant but left slightly dissapointed. It has a beautiful location near Lido. One of the first things I noticed is that the restaurant is not ADA friendly. Although there is a ramp, there were objects such as chairs and plants blocking the way. If you do not have someone to help you move the objects out of the way, It will be extremely difficult. Food: We ordered 2 fish dishes, a mushroom risotto, and calamari. The calamari was crispy and well seasoned, but did not have enough dipping sauces. The risotto tasted great with a nice truffle flavor. However, it did not have enough seasoning. The halibut was a bit small for the price. Service: The service during our visit was okay. Our server was friendly but not attentive. We had to wait a long time for our meal to arrive. Our server made a rude comment when we expressed our dissapointment with one of our dishes. He told us that we should try it. Ambiance: The interior of the restaurant is beautiful. There is plenty of comfortable seating. Friends and I went for a later reservation here on a Saturday and had an excellent dining experience. Our server, Romie, was extremely personable and was cracking jokes with us from the beginning. Decor is very charming. Was not too busy when we arrived around 8:45 and got less busy, as we were there. Drinks were excellent. Believe it or not, I think the soups were the star. It was one of the best clam chowders I've ever had and a friend of mine got the French Onion, which was even better when I tried it. My wife and I visited The Cannery for our 15-year anniversary on November 29, 2025. This restaurant holds a lot of sentimental meaning for us: it's where we had our first date, where I proposed one year later, and now, 15 years after that, we returned to celebrate again. Oddly enough, on all three occasions we happened to sit in three sequential booths near the front, overlooking the waterfront. My wife commented that her dirty martinis were some of the best she could remember and really enjoyed them--they were quite strong, as was my Captain Morgan and Coke. We started with the bread service, which comes with both regular butter and a sweetened butter. Both were delicious, and I preferred the sourdough rolls over the squaw rolls. Next, we shared the shrimp cocktail. The shrimp were large and fresh, served with cocktail sauce and what seemed to be a tartar-style sauce. (It was also pretty comical that the shrimp arrangement resembled a smiley face.) If I were to give a suggestion, it's that I would have liked a bit more cocktail sauce. We then had the Shellfish Trio, which includes lobster, shrimp, and scallops served with risotto. This was a delicious dish--plenty of food for my wife and I to split as a meal. The staff kindly brought us a chocolate molten cake as an anniversary gift to top it all off... It was rich, warm, and delicious. We really enjoyed our meal. The service was excellent, the views were wonderful, and this restaurant carries a lot of history for my wife and me. We drove from the inland empire on a lunch date to the cannery. It was a celebration for my newly transplanted lung and to enjoy the ambiance. We decided on closer to 1:00pm because it was less crowded and chose to sit inside just where it separated the patio area. The ambiance was good but the lunch salmon was soaked in grease along with the kale and the waitress saw me batting a fly that hovered over our table the whole time I was there and did nothing about it. I asked her to packup the salmon to go and I looked away for a second and the fly was chewing on my salmon. I didn't want to bother her and decided to bring the salmon home in the small box which I trashed once I got home. We will not be coming back to your restaurant. read more

So embarrassed that I took my dad here for Father's day that I'm writing this at 4 in the morning the next day. My family has enjoyed the Cannery many times, but we haven't been here for a few years. I thought it would the perfect place to take my dad as a nostalgic day. My dad is not into celebrations - but I talked him into letting us take him out. It's four people total. We get a call that there is a special pre-fixed bbq menu at $75 a person. This is a bit more than what we would normally pay per person and would give us no individual choice - but I trusted that the Cannery would make this a stellar experience at that price. Oh boy, I regret not taking pictures of this. We told them we don't eat pork and they kindly accommodated - but that just made the portions even worse (they did not replace food - just omitted it). At the end of the day, we got 4 prawns, 4 tuna sliders, 4 - 4 inch beef sausages, 1/2 chicken, 5 small slices of beef brisket and 4 small sides (in paper cups) for the whole table. Not each person ... for the whole table. For dessert we had very small banana pudding tarts that tasted like boxed pudding. They charged us a full $300. For sharing this small amount of food. My dad even made a comment that this is a lot of money for what we got. I have no issue paying $300 here at the Cannery - but for the Cannery experience we know and love - not this. My dad watched me pay for this - which added insult to injury. I am still in disbelief. read more

I don't understand some of the negative reviews, my first time experience was quite nice. My server Justin gave us the right amount of attention , he assisted us with menu choices and was very accommodating. There's quite a bit of History in some of the decor, to include the historical connection to baseball. I was in a party of two and we ordered the black cod and the Lobster Pot pie. Both dishes were absolutely delicious! The Lobster Pot Pie was decadent , rich, and the flaky crust was perfectly flaky. It came with a side salad , probably to balance the richness of the Lido structure. I did decrease one star because i honestly cannot justify the pricing of the menu. At this price point i would consider this establishment if it is a special occasion such as an anniversary or promotion . That being said, it was quite a nice experience. read more
