Red patent leather booths - Super Old School
    Sidney Z.

The "A" restaurant here in Newport Beach, CA started off in 1925 as The Archers then shortened the name to The A; and until today I never heard of it. But our dear "local" friends took us here tonight, and I'm sure glad they did! This old school, red patent leather booth - steakhouse is doing everything right when it comes to food, price, ambience and service. The A was shockingly packed on this Monday night and now I know why; it's just so damn good, I've been to steakhouse's all over the world that couldn't compare a lick to The A. Let me run-down what us six souls packed away: * Dry Gin Martini's that were picture perfect (see pix) * A Caesar Salad done so right, I didn't have to ask for extra anchovies * Our Bone-in Rib-eye steaks were sublime * The Mushroom and asparagus sides hit the spot * Our desserts were the best way to end this fantastic meal The atmosphere was kind of Musso and Frank(ish); and that's a glowing compliment. My wife and I go to a lot of restaurants. I I told her my law of averages when going out to eat: Two restaurants will be excellent six restaurants will be good to very good Two will be mediocre to poor Rarely do you get "Stellar"! The A this night was exactly that - Stellar!

We had a reservation so check in was smooth. Service is quick and our waiter was very well spoken which I appreciate. Everyone was welcoming and helpful. The ambiance is more so on the darker/chill side. It would be great for a date night or out with friends. Parking is a little bit harder to find but they also have valet. On to the food, I find it quite subpar. It tastes the same as every other restaurant but it's still filling and good. The skirt steak is nice but you could easily make it at home. The same could be said with the vodka pasta as well. Drinks are tasty so that's a plus. Overall I would only come back if I needed somewhere special to go to.

The wine list, by the glass

Well. I must say the food was good. Happy hour menu looked good. We all ordered wine by the glass, it was half off on Tuesday. i ordreed a glass of Kathryn Hall Cabernet, Napa 2022, I glanced at the price, saw 45. No, it was $145 a glass! The 1 looks like part of the lines in the menu! Take a look at wine menu, see what you think. This is quite deceptive, in my opinion, so half off, the glass was $67.50. It was great though but, looked like 45 to me! Finally adding on employee benefit to the bill really irks me! Seriously! Had I know I too would have asked for that to be removed. Not so sure I will return for those reasons!

This place came highly recommended to us from friends and it did not let us down. The ambiance is great. Lots of booths. Great people watching. Warm nice lighting. Old school wood decor. The service was great. We had a server, and someone to clear and set each course. They also had a really good sommelier to help us choose our wine. Tuesday is 1/2 price wine night. All the bottles are half off! (Excluding the few that are super rare and allocated) Important note: The bar gets PACKED! We came in right at opening and there were no seats. You have to get there about 20 minutes early to wait in line to get in and get a spot. We didn't know that and wish we would have. Also- they apparently have a founders room that you can rent out, and have a private dining area in its own building in the back of the parking lot. It looked like a great place for a party.

We attended a birthday dinner in the private dining area named the Owner's Lounge. The small building is completely separate from the restaurant, it feels like a cozy cabin which comfortably fit 15 guests and a DJ! I liked being in the private, intimate setting. The set up had a small DJ booth set up, TV, booth seats, chairs, 2 large tables, and small open space in between to mingle and dance! Valet parking is available for $9. The service was outstanding! The staff had to walk back and forth in the rain since the private room is separate. I cannot remember our servers name, but she really knows how to paint a picture of each menu item by her detailed description. Every single person was extremely satisfied with our delicious meals! I wish I could've had the mac and cheese all to myself! The filet mignon was cooked to perfection. There is no private restroom, so we would walk to the main restaurant for the restroom inside. The restaurant was extremely loud and busy with people waiting by the front door.

We love coming here, especially for drinks. The staff is always welcoming and friendly. The restaurant is beautiful too. I love that they have a fireplace for those chilly nights and sliding doors for those warms days. We usually come here for drinks and we love it.

A divine dining experience that is a must in Newport Beach at a historic location, dating back over a century. The Filet Miñon is a must. So are all the sides.

Valet parking ($9.00) Reservations recommended. Ok for groups of maybe 8 or less. Did not see any kids. Small location, great service. Menu offered many options. Must try location if in the area.

Came here for Valentine's day and had some amazing dishes. They had amazing steak and the yellowfin tuna was amazing. Ask your waiter for their recommendations! The environment is very classy and traditional. The steak was so buttery!

Superb meal!! We had not been here in many years - was The Arches back then. Classic old steakhouse - great retro vibe. Service was excellent. Started with very good calamari and then a great Caesar salad. The steaks were the highlight - I had an amazing ribeye and the Mrs had a wonderful filet mignon. Pared with mushrooms and potato puree. Coconut sorbet for dessert. We brought our own wine and paid the $40 corkage fee. Steep, but still a good move I think. There is only valet parking there and it's $9. You can park in a nearby neighborhood if you want, but it's no fun walking uphill after dinner. Great job!

Came here for my husbands birthday and had a very nice experience. Super nice inside with amazing food. The steak and sides were all delicious. My only feedback is the asparagus was very large. Intimate setting but can be a louder environment. The staff were friendly and gave my husband a birthday desert with a hand written card.

Drinks and apps during the holidays here was great! We came on a night that had half off wine glasses and bottles, which is a great deal. The two appetizers we got were the Brussels sprouts and the Mac and cheese. The Brussel sprouts we were unsure about ordering because I'm not generally a fan of just the leaves. However, the sauce and crunch they put on this made this very delicious! Mix it up a bit before you put it on your plate to make sure you capture all flavors. The Mac and cheese were also very good, pretty simple. The ambiance here is great as it's dimly lit which a beautiful bar scene. Great sport for full dinner or just drinks with friends.

"A Restaurant" is a beautiful restaurant inside and out. The interior is a warm feeling with soft lighting all around to make it feel more moody in a good way. Me and My girlfriend went for out Valentine's Day dinner and have a great night here. Our server was very kind and super nice when it came to getting our order, the bussers were great on refilling waters and servers were great even refilling on drinks. This place is very well structured and managed to the point each individual has a great hand with eachother! The food here was also something to mention, we started our evening with the Spicy Yellowfin Tuna, it was a really soft with a nice crunch on the bottom of the presentation. Followed with our entree which was the Boneless Ribeye and to top off the sides with Mac N Cheese and the Sautéed Mushrooms. Everything we had was delicious although I will say I personally wasn't a fan of the mac n cheese. Still the Steak was cooked perfectly and the sautéed mushrooms were also great. For dessert we ended out night with the Chocolate Silk Pie, and man it was delicious! I highly recommend this place!

WOW, Casa de Onda is truly a magical hidden gem! From the…read moremoment you walk in, you are instantly transported to the vibrant atmosphere of a Tulum/Cabo/Cancun vacation/vibes. The attention to detail in the aesthetics/remodel is stunning with rattan lamps and plants, super spacious seating, cute patio furniture sets, 2 bars, & lots of backdrop photo opportunities. It honestly feels like a tropical oasis. They have recently remodeled and enclosed the space, making it perfectly private and cozy while blocking the wind. Parking in the garage, and walking up the elevator, finding the place was easy! The service here is superb, friendly, and quick. Photos on social media, website, and Yelp/Google simply do NOT do this place justice! At first a little skeptical normally cute places don't have good food, or vice versa good food but not a cute place. This place definitely delivered beyond both great food, cute ambience and more! Some of the poor quality photos and negative reviews made me a little nervous but our experience was nothing like it or maybe we are all not super humans and this place really listened and valued the feedback and stepped it up. Planning a surprise 70th birthday from out of town esp the event planner that I am, finding the perfect cute place and good food fitting for the birthday girl and our large family can be extremely challenging - you normally can not have it all. We actually canceled another place in hopes that Casa de Onda would deliver and execute the specific criterias we were looking for - yummy flavorful food, great service, and cute vibes; it's always all about the vibes now! Alex, the owner, was so prompt, responsive, patient, and helpful while we planned everything with multiple emails and proposals. Even though there was a preset menu option for our group of 27, they accommodated pre-orders off their regular menu which was more impressive since our guests came all the way from the Bay Area and some are locally and we love to always try a little of everything. Alex even checked in on us personally on the day of, super sweet. Our day-of host, Dave, was friendly, hardworking, and chillax, he was organized and have read through the email communication (which most others won't). Jessica and Rachelle were sweet and hustled to get our food and drinks out incredibly fast, and Arturo the bartender was super nice and quick with the drinks at the bar when we arrived early. The food was spectacular! This is not your bland overpriced Mexican American fusion as we are big on authentic and hole in the wall mom and pop kinda food. It is incredibly flavorful and beautifully plated/presented. The Vampire Asada and Pork Belly Tacos were a huge hit! This order was perfect with barely any leftovers for a group of 27 (22 adults and 5 kids). It is always extremely hard trying not to under or over order but we preordered a minimum and ordered a tad more day of which was so perfect. We had the food scheduled to come out back to backs for my hungry family Starters: 5:30pm 3 Chips & Salsa 2 Asada Nachos 2 Gem salad 3 Burrata heirloom tomatoes 3 Shrimp ceviche 3 Elote Corn riblets Tacos: 5:45pm 9 Vampire Asada 9 Pork Belly Total x 2 each = 36 tacos Entree: 6:00pm 3 Steak and truffle fries 3 Mole braised short ribs 3 Shrimp and fried grits 7:00pm Cake & Sing Happy Birthday! Brought and cut our own cake Nice of them to have sparklers for us! 7:15pm Sing surpise Happy Birthday to our 5 year old niece! Brownie cookie and ice cream This looked hella good saw that the kids devoured this lol 7:30pm Family photo/depart Kinda regret not ordering enchiladas and desserts but still ecstatic of the overall food, drinks and experience. Our family eats quick as anticipated, we finished the event within 2.5 hours (5pm-730pm), I wished we were able to spend another 1 hour or and just hang out to enjoy the place but the elders were done lol but now know of this place, we will def be back! Additional details: They also provided cute custom menus for our orders, which helped our guests know exactly what delicious food was coming out. The drinks were beautifully presented in cute cups, with the Mexican Strawberry Mule being a crowd favorite! The patio bar was so cute too, it felt we were on vacation in Cabo/Cancun They also have patio heaters/plenty of shade and music was cool! They have plenty of TV screens for the games, and even surprised us by a screen rollout already set up by our table when we arrive just for the NBA finals as I asked in emailed if there are nearest tvs but did not expect anything. This probably was the ultimate thoughtful gesture caring that was everything! Thank you so much Alex & Casa de Onda, for taking such a wonderful, warm, inviting, and thoughtful care with your heart and soul of our mom's 70th surprise birthday and making it an unforgettable celebration for our family as if it was your own family! You deserve a thousand stars and more!

We had a fun time here!…read more Happy Hour from 5-6. Themed Drinks. Good Atmosphere. And, friendly staff. We came for the Love Island watch party on Thursday. The outdoor area has plenty of TV's, a bar, high top tables, lounge chairs, and regular tables. Inside the decor is nice and on brand. Upon arrival, you get the Love Island menu, a lei and a bingo card per person, and a chance to play in their predictions. Service was quick throughout the night even though they were packed. The nachos were yummy. We added chicken and they were good. Hefty servings and easily shared between two people. The drinks are also tasty. I do wish there were more food and drink options offered with Happy Hour prices. Only some drinks are on the happy hour list and nachos are discounted. That said, 10/10 would recommend this spot for a fun date night or a girls' hangout.
