Eat Chow is one of those places. That is such a great surprise, it's a little hole-in-the-wall place down a side street but is definitely worth the visit. Parking can be a little bit tricky, but if you get there early enough you're in for a treat. One of the things I love about this place is it's very casual atmosphere, that really feels like you're eating at a friend's house for breakfast. The place is well kept, has plenty of outdoor seating if you choose, and inside. Has a very pleasant tasteful decor that is very casual and warm and inviting. I have not eaten here for lunch, as it's always been a breakfast place for me. Everything on the menu is stellar. And I've never had a bad experience here at all. This particular trip, I wanted to try something that I had never had before so I opted for the chow prime breakfast burrito... Which has strips of prime rib, hash browns, two eggs, onions and peppers, and is served with this amazing homemade salsa. The homemade salsa should also be a controlled substance, because I had three of them and I could probably take some home. I am a big fan of coffee, and their coffee does not disappoint. Super tasty. Just strong enough and unlimited refills. Their weight staff is absolutely perfect. If you go there, ask for Alex, super chill guy, attentive without being overbearing, and ready to make suggestions. He was definitely part of the wonderful dining experience. Bottom line? When you are in Costa Mesa and you are looking for a place to have breakfast, you owe it to yourself to go to Eat Chow. Used to come here all the time when I worked in the area, so made a trip over to see if it held up. The hole in the wall has expanded to a decently sized 50s diner aesthetic restaurant and the quality has remained solid. Had a quite excellent burger with a salad and a bowl of French onion soup. Service was pleasant and attentive for my group of four. Happy to see the place is as good as I remember. Now just have to hope they could bring back The Fried Egg breakfast plate, that was amazing and I miss it. But sadly I think it's lost to time. read more

Service was attentive, overall ambience was great (not too loud), plenty of areas for parking, and of course, the food was delicious! One thing I want to point out though is that I ordered crispy potatoes on the side and was served tater tots (not sure if the ran out, or if this location is different)...was a bit let down as I LOVE the crispy potatoes at the Newport location but these were still good. So my Mom is a vegetarian but my Dad is a meat lover who only likes American and Italian food which makes going out to eat with my parents difficult since basically we can go to Italian or American restaurants and in this part of Costa Mesa that's pretty much Nicks or Eat Chow and everyone in my family actually prefers the food at Eat Chow! Solid brunch choice in the Costa Mesa Newport area! Came here with a friend on New Year's Eve late morning. We had a reservation at 11:00 and were seated right away; they did not seem super busy considering it was NYE. I ordered the breakfast brioche sandwich and a mimosa flight to share. The flight came with 4 different flavors, a good option to share with a friend. The breakfast sandwich was pretty good. The brioche was super soft and the egg was cooked well and not too messy to eat. My dish came with a small side of breakfast potatoes that were really nicely cooked and had some parmesan on them as well. Prices are moderate, and portion size is okay. Had reservations for brunch today and they were able to seat us a little early. Inside dining area is small but comfortable. The waitress was very friendly and engaging even though they were obviously busy and slightly backed up. We never felt rushed to finish or leave. The food was amazing and everyone enjoyed it. We just ate lunch here today and hadn't been in a while. Love the atmosphere and food and service was exceptional! We started with French Onion Soup which was delicious and very flavorful. My husband had the protein bowl and it was delicious! The sausage was cooked perfectly and sweet potatoes had so much flavor. The portion was really big for the $! I had the Newporter salad and it was one of the best salads I've ever eaten. The chicken was flavorful and the dressing was delicious. There were so many good and fresh ingredients in the salad and it was huge. We loved our meals and will definitely be back. There is indoor and outdoor seating but we sat indoors since outside was crowded. Since it was the weekend they had brunch menu. For drinks we got the brown sugar espresso martini and chai espresso martini. For food I got the shrimp tacos and my fiancé got the chicken sandwich with salad on side. Brown sugar espresso (8/10)-glad I got it less sweet since it was perfect sweetness didn't get he brown sugar as much but not overly strong or weak. Chai espresso martini (8/10)-light in chai but not overly spicy and not too sweet either. Shrimp tacos (8.5/10)-large tacos good price for $18! Side of the beans were okay but the shrimp was plump with fresh salsa! Chicken sandwich (8.5/10)-juicy and flavorful, the bacon and cheese crisp made it unique! I've been coming here for years... The food is generally pretty steady, although often soggy if you order delivery/to go. But tonight I dined in and would encourage everyone to check the bill! I ordered a French dip, which was delicious... But I was asked, "do you want a side salad or fries? Would you like cheese?" I answered "fries and yes please cheese." When I looked at the bill, I was charged $3 up charged for fries and $3 for a slice of Swiss cheese. It's not the end of the world, but honestly... the way it was phrased and also an up charge for fries over a side salad and two dollars for one slice of Swiss cheese is just ridiculous in my book. This place looks really nice and has decent parking across the street. The service was good, but the wait was pretty long. It took about 30 minutes after we ordered to get our food. This was on a reasonably busy Saturday, but there was no line of customers outside so it wasn't THAT busy. Unfortunately, I was unimpressed with the food. It's important to note that I only had the chow benedict, so maybe the other food is good and there's certainly a good selection, but it was very uninspired. It didn't taste bad, it was just extremely ordinary. The potatoes were whatever, the Benedict was cooked fine, but it was missing flavor. I am a Benedict fanatic and I rate this near the bottom of the Benedict's I've had, I think they really need to add something to make it worth $20. read more

So far this is one of my favorite spots for breakfast/lunch. There's an assortment of dishes for any craving whether it be heavy or light and the kitchen can be very accommodating. Both areas do not disappoint as the decor is very comfy but give a modern brunch. On my first visit my friend and I got the chorizo hash and avotoast. The hash is on the heavier side but still a great choice that they didn't leave a single bit left on the plate. The avotoast left me feeling very satisfied, but not stuffed and the smoked salmon add on made it that much better. This is a must try spot during any time of the day, but maybe I'm too quick to say since I haven't had their dinner menu. Overall, very happy with the restaurant. Our second visit we got the breakfast burrito and cubano. The burrito is a large size to which we took it home, but it was packed full of flavor and instead of scrambled eggs we got sunny side up to make the burrito have a creamier texture. The cubano was awesome and the potatoes that came with it were perfect. I was reluctant on the potatoes from other restaurants, but they caught me by good surprise. They were wedge fries, with the perfect crisp. Since we're on the subject of crisp the cubano was the same with each and every bite. The aioili on the cubano was spectacular especially since I am used to mustard, but the switch up was a great idea. read more

I'm saddened by the direction Eat Chow seems to be headed. They used to have unique flavors on the menu and it seems to be more basic flavor profiles now. They had a delicious BBQ eggs Benedict years ago but got rid of it and now have a basic Benedict. They used to have delicious Thai beef salad and my favorite seared ahi salad but both have been taken off the menu and all that's left are basic salads. I hope they bring back their some of their more unique dishes of introduce some new ones! read more
