Ugh, I wish this place would get their act together because I'm addicted to their shrimp and potato enchiladas. That dish is the ONE reason I would ever step foot in this place more than once. The service is so incredibly slow and lacking, that even if they are friendly (which sometimes they are not), it doesn't help. Our latest visit had us sitting 10 minutes before anybody even came for our drink order or to deliver chips. We've had staff in the past be downright rude, and a lot of the time they are just confused and make many mistakes. We've received drinks made wrong, drinks never even delivered, orders made wrong, side items never brought to the table, not being told they were out of something until all other dishes were delivered to the table (meaning that person sat with NO food until their replacement was cooked), and errors on the bill. The amount of gaffes usually just make for a frustrating and awkward experience. Definitely not worth the headache to eat here regularly. But once in a blue moon when my craving for those darn enchiladas rears its ugly head.... I have to suck it up and risk the headache of slow, incompetent service and get my fix! Only to be reminded why we don't go here, and wait months and months before I attempt it again. read more

Let me tell you, I have not had a lot of good Mexican food before. To be honest, I've never been to a good mexican restaurant so I was hoping that this place wouod change my mind. And it did. Right when we got there everyone was very friendly. Although it was a bit hard to understand everyone there (since many there had spanish as their first language before english) the experience was awesome. We ordered an appetizer of "side table guacamole" to start. It was amazing! Then when we all order our individual meals, none of us went home hungry. Everything there was made with fresh ingredients and was filled with balanced flavors. If I ever come back to NC, I would come here again in a heartbeat. read more

Food is great. Shrimp Tostadas are probably their best appetizer. Hostess was rude and had zero customer service skills. Waitress was great. We had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. I wonder if the cuisine is a variant of Mexican cuisine, but for lack of appreciation of the variant the chef/owners have chosen to classify themselves as Fine Mexican Cuisine. Agreed that the other game in town La Fogata (in "cheeseburger alley") is a notch better in food, but two notches lower in ambience, therefore the area does call for another "Mexican". Why my observation? Well for starters, the salsa (both kinds, roja and verde) were both fresh, but lacked the zest and flavor of the salsas Cancun style or the complexity of the Baja style. The house margaritas were good. Again fresh, but more than the tried and tested lime-lemony. There was some tropical (not pineapple, but nice) taste I could not tell. Great food, great service, and AMAZING drinks! My girlfriends and I go here probably once a week...and have never been disappionted. That could have to do with the fact that one of my girlfriends is buddies with the manager (Cesar) and we get free drinks a lot...but still, the food is great! Could not be happier with our experience! I called today based on reviews looking good and spoke with Jose. We are a large party of 20 people and he bent over backwards to accommodate us for a last minute dinner. The food was fresh and delicious. The staff could not be friendlier and did all they could to make sure we were happy. The queso and guacamole were so good and fresh. The chicken was so tender and moist. Very happy! We had a wonderful dinner here. We started out with some house margaritas that were better than I thought they would be...not all mix, and you could actually taste the tequila...and only $5. Then for appetizers we ordered the fresh guacamole which they make table-side. Delicious, except next time I'd probably have them make it a little spicier. We also had the queso fundido dip (melted cheese and chorizo sausage) which was a hot, bubbly dish of deliciousness. I highly recommend this! For our entrees I had the Tilapia Veracruz which was outstanding and not too filling...especially after our appetizers! My husband, who had the Steak Ranchero, found the steak to be super tender, but the ranchero sauce was a little bland. Nothing he couldn't fix with a little hot sauce though! Our server was an older latino man, very nice and attentive, but there was a little bit of a language barrier. I'm not sure we were all understanding one another at all times, but he was still very friendly and made sure we were taken care of. Overall, its not the best Mexican I've ever had, but we were pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed ourselves and our food. The prices are very moderate too. We'll definitely return! read more

The one here on the outer banks in nags head is fantastic. Our waitress was very charismatic and had a lot of fun w us. The food was good. The service was slow. It was a lot of food for couples fajita. We ordered a couples fajita with just chicken and shrimp. It usually comes with shrimp,beef,pork,chicken. So the fajita was mostly chicken then shrimp. I get seafood is more expensive but then don't pile the chicken on. For the price it was great. Our party of 10 were super stoked about having Mexican at OBX after reading the ratings we decided to have dinner at Plaza Azteca. From the start our party of 10 seemed to be a little of an inconvenience. We had to organize our own table seating. The meals came tricking out after 30 min of waiting and drinks (non-alcoholic) were left unfilled. Most tasted like microwaved TV dinners but the kicker was one of the meals didn't come out after all. We had to ask the waitress about the order and she replied the kitchen forgot to make it. It came out and it wasn't right but she ate part of it anyway because she was hungry and we had all finished. Our bills came and her meal was still included on the ticket. The waitress told us that she had talked to the manager, Jose, and he didn't want to take it off. My mom went to the manager and told him the situation and he asked if she ate any of it. She said yes she ate a part of it and he only credited a half of a meal. She had to negotiate to get her a free meal. Come on now the customer is always right especially if they forget the meal and the meal was wrong.. customer service needs to step it up! read more

We come to plaza every week, spend $60-$80 and are usually very happy. Unfortunately we were in today and my husband found a fingernail in his food! It was for sure a fingernail. We told the bartender and she said the cooks said it was something in the rice... there wasn't even any rice in the dish! The manager never came out and no apologies were even given. The bartender said all she could do was give us a locals discount which we should receive anyways. Food was amazing! We started with the queso with chicken not sure what the name was, but we will be returning for that queso specifically. My boyfriend ordered the shrimp tacos they were beautifully plated & just as delicious. I order the San Jose burrito .. on the menu it states chicken and chorizo burrito. I'm thinking what a good combo. This thing comes out and it's huge! I was not excepting such a huge burrito but it was definitely delicious. More than half of it was wasted due to the extreme size. If you haven't eaten in 3 days order that burrito. I would have given 5 stars if the service was a great as our food. Our server was not attentive. We never saw her after our food was brought out, she did not bring out our food; and we never received refills. After asking another employee to find our server we finally got the check. Plaza never disappoints! I've been eating at this chain since 2005 when I went to college at CNU. Their prices are amazing and so is the food. Everything I've ever tried has been amazing but my favorite is their chicken quesadillas and tacos. When they serve you chips and salsa don't for get to ask for the white sauce.
