CAN YOU SAY SUNDAY FUNDAY? Made a reservation. Probably recommended since this place was getting crazy busy. Lauren was our server/greeter/and friendly hostess with the mostess. She's excellent, playful and accommodating. My bottomless mimosas did not disappoint. Our service was great though the the place was packed. I ordered the wild mushroom omelette and sub for the rosemary potatoes. HELLO delicious cheesy-eggy friend! I just fell in love. Love the dedicated department of caring hands who constructed a beautiful savory breakfast fare. It was a beautiful symphony in my mouth. Truffle pecorino? Hello, cheese me please. Beautiful indoors and outdoors with a hint of fun music. YOU GUYS ROCK! Great efin job! Side note-for those coming for bottomless-there is a 2 HOUR MAX on the service-Please be vigilant that we've been in a pandemic for a year and everyone wants to spend their stimmy's on bottomless drinks. Came here with friends for brunch on a Saturday and best part was not having to wait for a table, we were seated quickly and service was great. We all ordered something different and I'd have to say we all enjoyed what we picked, you can see the picture of the croque madame I ordered. The food came out hot and fresh. Not really much else to say except Plate38 seems to be well know in the area. I mentioned it to a realtor friend who specializes in Pasadena and knew exactly what we were talking about. read more

When I lived in Pasadena, I loved coming here for brunch. They have great brunch. I was able to try out dinner for DineLA and it was great. My friend and split the menu so we got to try everything and it was all super tasty and good options too. This place is so unassuming and kind off the path of other trendier Pasadena places but it's a good option. read more

I am surprise by the food is so good and this place review is so low, until I find out their servant in the day time sucks, Entire place is empty, my table is wobbly SO BADLY,I ask him politely twice to change a table , he said he couldn't change another for me, or I can go outside table. Entire restaurant is empty except another couple . What kind of customer service in nowadays? And they should know their food is not cheap , and servants always ask high percentage tips ( Munster bill from 15% change to 18%) why they feel they deserve with expensive food and shit service read more

Our wedding anniversary casual dinner. Great small plates, highly recommended the 3 dishes featured on my review. Drinks was not very good, New York sour was too much lemon not enough bourbon, aperol spritz was no fizz and my pineapple vodka soda was lacking the fizz. I come here sometimes for dinner and their great happy hour (they have both afternoon until 6PM and again after 8PM). The food is excellent. The drinks are strong and delicious. And the people who work here are all very nice, especially their main evening bartender, Eric, who makes great cocktails. I wish we had more places like Plate 38 in the eastern parts of Pasadena. read more

There was this brief, glorious two-week period when you could go to a restaurant or bar indoors. That's when I met a friend at Plate 38 for Happy Hour. It's a casual bar/restaurant in the parking lot of a small strip center - which means... parking! Their Happy Hour starts at 3, which is very nice when you want to grab a drink with someone but don't want to be out late. They have a full bar and some good beer selections. Everything we ordered from the "Bar Bites" menu was good: the Cuban sandwich, the petite French dip (my favorite), and the skirt steak quesadilla. They also have a cheese and charcuterie menu, which goes nicely with the Happy Hour offerings. They DO offer outdoor patio seating so even now, with outdoor dining restrictions, you can stop by. I recommend you do. Service was very friendly and attentive. This is pretty much everything you could ask for in a Happy Hour and the lunch and dinner menus looked very promising. A nice find that would fit for just about any dining or drinking occasion. read more

Made a reservation with ease. Greeted warmly at the door. Sat down and Dennis was our server. He knew the menu back and front. He described each item to perfection. The service was great but the food was of great quality and even greater flavor. The Burger was cooked exactly like we ordered. The half chicken was the most moist flavorful chicken I have ever had in a restaurant. The beet salad was tender and the perfect vinaigrette drizzle with a few pine nuts. Can't wait to go back. So glad I discovered this gem of the neighborhood. The only negative is it was a tad cold as windows were open. But I get it I felt COVID safe for sure. read more

Unfortunately not their best day. Party of 5 for lunch around noon. We were seated immediately but no server greeted us for a while. Five minutes went by and another party was seated at the table next to us but they were immediately greeted by a server and their order taken while we were still waiting for our server. The chairs were very uncomfortable and the flooring tiles were old and uneven which caused the chair to sit on only 3 of it's legs so it was wobbly. We were in the patio area but the ceiling heaters were cranked up way too hot for the day. Our server greeted us about 5 minutes later after several other servers seemed to apologize and mention that our server would be with us shortly. We had a bloody mary, 3 mimosas, 2 breakfast burritos, a garden salad, grilled asparagus and a mushroom omelette. The bloody mary was more tomato water than tomato juice served with 1 olive and no other garnishes with a glass full of small ice. I wouldn't recommend it. None of the food was seasoned very well including the omelette and burritos but were ok otherwise. For the salad, the lettuce was not cut small enough which made it a little hard to eat and there were dry undressed julienned slices of watermelon radish which was awkward. Not very flavorful in total. The grilled asparagus was the best thing on the table, it came with 2 dipping cups, 1 with mayo and 1 with a flavored mayo which was yummy. Unfortunately we probably won't return for a while. read more

We got seated in the patio area on the west side of the restaurant and it was perfect - right under the heat lamps on a chilly night. Because the restaurant is right at the intersection of two main streets, it was a little noisy, but with the buzz and music of the atmosphere you hardly noticed it. Service was prompt and we got our drink order within 10 minutes of being seated. I ordered a smoked Old Fashioned - how it came to the table was cool but it only tasted ok - we also ordered the grilled octopus, fries, and the cioppino. They were good sized portions and tasted pretty good. I liked the grilled char flavor on the octopus, but the shrimp was over cooked in the cioppino. We enjoyed the meal and would consider coming back. I hope Pasadena will still allow for outdoor dining as restaurants like this really need to stay open. read more

If you have a large group, please stay away from this restaurant. The food is not that bad. The service is absolutely awful--and it may have been that we were a group of eight gay men. I do not formally make that accusation about WHY the service was bad; however, one has to wonder. We never knew who our waiter/waitress was, as we had several. One in the group did not get his entree while the rest of us were served. That gentleman received a snide remark from a waiter when asked. We never knew why the order was not brought out. We did ask about how to settle the check. They were all too eager to bring that out to us. At first, we were told we could split the check into three different checks. However, the check came all on ONE bill. With eight people, this is hard to settle. Plate 38 and other restaurants should find a way to offer each patron a separate check, even with large groups. They very often say that it is too much trouble to provide separate checks. It would be nice if Plate 38 and other restaurants could develop a system to do just that. Again, large groups, stay away from Plate 38! read more

From the outside you wouldn't imagine that the inside is so lovely. We were greeted immediately with a kind smile and directed to a cozy table for two. Our server was attentive and eager to answer any questions. We were lucky enough to make it for happy hour and took advantage of the small bites. Came here for lunch during a weekday with friends and the food is always delicious! It is on the pricy side but worth it. We ordered the garlic herb fries, crispy chicken california club, truffle mushroom burger, and garden vegetable salad with steak. All amazing but just a bit overpriced. The sandwiches and burgers do not come with sides, just a pickle. We wanted peach bellinis but they were out of the puree so we got a raspberry version of it, but equally as good. I would highly suggest coming for happy hour for cheaper prices. Staff was friendly, wearing masks. As of 3/30 indoor dining was open as well as their outdoor seating. Tables are spaced well apart for proper social distancing. They also have hand sanitizer at the front when you enter. read more

A group of 6 of us were there on Friday to celebrate a birthday. The calamari & shrimp appetizer came out hot and was excellent. The skirt steak dinners which 3 of us ordered were cold. At $34 a plate, I was extremely disappointed. Because we were celebrating a birthday we didn't want to ruin the moment but I was really disappointed. Service was slow and most times we had to wave down the server. Automatic 18% tip doesn't give them anything to work for. I am not a cheap tipper and often give the 20%, but in this case, they would have been lucky to get 15%. read more

DineLA Bait and Switch We booked a reservation at Plate 38 in Pasadena for Friday 1/24 at 6:00 PM. AFTER we were seated (with a 15" delay because kitchen was "not ready") and AFTER we were shown the menu, which included its DineLA menu, we were told that the chef was "not ready" for the menu. DineLA menu would not be available until Monday. I said to the waiter that the things I would order from the DIneLA menu are already on their regular menu. The only difference was that the filet is 5 oz on the former and 7 oz on the latter. All he had to do was take 2 ounces off. Waiter said chef would not accommodate. This was highly disappointing for our party and highly disrespectful of the customer. They should have made this notification before confirming our reservation, should have disclosed this before they sat us, and should have made even a small effort to accommodate their customers. None of this was done. This is false advertisement and a bad reflection on the DineLA brand which we have used and trusted for many years. read more

I've already posted a deplorable review of this place for the horrendous treatment I received on top of being reserved my plate of food I was allergic to. Yes you read that right. Reserved since I sent it back. No management was there. Yea right. I have worked in food and customer service my entire life. I never did not have an authoritive figure on deck. Don't waste your money. Go to the cheesecake factory before wasting your money here. So not worth what they will put you through. read more

Came here for early dinner on a Sunday, and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't busy. We had a wheelchair which they accomodated us very graciously. The hostess who greeted us was super friendly and hospitable, as well as the lady who let us change tables since the one we were at was too small for the wheelchair and was too cold for someone older. Our server Mike was also very accommodating with alterations to our order due to allergies and sensitivities. He was so attentive to our needs, always checking in on us, answering questions, and refilling our drinks. The prices may seem high at first, but for the freshness of the ingredients, to the quality of the food and fancy combination of flavors and creative recipes, it's worth it. The presentation and plating of the food is beautiful, and the taste is just as good. I wish I took more pictures, but I was so hungry I ate it all very quickly. We had the shrimp and calamari small plate (nice and crisp), the sweet potato fries, and the pan-roasted half chicken plate (sooo delicious.). We are not from the area and just visiting, so not sure when we wil be back, but it was such a pleasant time from start to finish that it will definitely be a memorable one. Oh, and ALL the desserts sounded to delicately crafted and tasty, but we ended up choosing the German chocolate cake, which did NOT disappoint! Not even a crumb left. Plate 38 has regular menu, daily specials and happy hour menu for dinner. For Monday, their happy hour is from 3p to close. Pretty good deal! The mushroom bruschetta from their happy hour menu is tasty. The salmon dish is an interesting one with lentils and spinach in a coconut curry lobster broth. The combination is adventurous and surprisingly goes well together. The fish taco too crispy to my taste. fish inside batter tastes meh/has no taste. Lastly even though the beet salad tastes good, portion is really tiny! This place also has a wide selection of beer and wine. And friendly attentive service!! Friendly service and granted we were done, paid, and now just catching up on a year's worth of life, but could have offered at least more water. Not like they were slammed with a-lot of customers. Food WAY over priced! $19 for a hamburger that could fit in the cup of my hand, no side!! $32 skirt steaks with fries... geez. Hamburger was tasty but nothing that I would say need to eat again. Artichoke appetizer, what a joke! A small artichoke like the size of a tennis ball cut in half for $20!! Very roasted! I don't recall a piece of heart on my half cuz sooo small of a ' choke. Side salad was probably the best part.. tasty, plentiful... thank goodness 'cuz burger definitely not filling. read more

Every single one of the staff were so friendly which is nice to walk into a place so welcoming. Friendly hi, making sure everyone was taken care of and if anything was needed. Great customer service. Drinks didn't take long to arrive followed by the first item. The cinnamon apple French toast. It was quite nice with the crunch and apple jam. Everything was great when brought out that no extra syrup was needed. Also served with whipped cream. Within a Couple minutes after that, the entrees came out. An order of the kimchi buttered fried chicken Benedict. First off, it was delicious. Two big portions of Benedict, with kimchi added and the chicken had a lot of flavors. It wasn't too powering with the kimchi and worked really well. That came with their potatoes and a side salad. And the Norwegian Benedict with smoked salmon. Basically a smoked salmon Benedict with all the trimmings. The meals were great and the dishes were massive. We've seen a couple of people sharing plates and lots of leftovers. The food was great and delicious. Service didn't take long after ordering and staff were all very friendly. The only waiting was for a table but that's a given during the weekend. They are limited in hours. Mainly breakfast and brunch but the food was great. Until next time. What time do they take their last order? Maybe they should consider adding that information to their Google page, because it would have saved me a walk. The food was ok, not bad but not great either. We were a group of 5 celebrating my sister's birthday, so we were hoping for something special. The service was very very slow. We waited a long time to be seated; hardly anyone was there - all of the employees saw us but ignored us, until a gruff gentleman seated us. I say gruff because there was no greeting just "you have a reservation?" to which I said "yes" and he led us to a table. It was at least 10-15 minutes until anyone greeted us. Only a few tables were occupied and there were a few people sitting at the bar, but it seemed to take a long time, which was exasperated by a family with dogs barking in the restaurant. We were debating about leaving when a wait person finally stopped by - she was very nice and personable so we decided to order cocktails and stay. She did get our drinks to us pretty quickly, but then we finished our drinks before she returned to take our orders. We got a bunch of small plates, and honestly the sexy Mac and cheese was the best item and the duck wings were also a hit, but the fries were insanely salty and a weird mix of undercooked and overcooked, but my sister liked them so they got eaten. We had another round of cocktails which were good. I got the Chinese chicken salad which was rather bland. My sis got a turkey melt which she liked, her husband got chilequilles, which he enjoyed. My mother in law got salmon eggs Benedict- she said she liked but only ate a couple bites, so I think she was being polite. My husband got steak and eggs, and said the steak was bland and tough to chew but he loved the stuffed chile that went with it. During the entire time we are, we couldn't get the waitress's attention. No water, no salt/pepper, hot sauce - nothing. Finally my sister got up and found another table to get salt/pepper and hot sauce, but accidentally dropped the hot sauce when returning to the table. She pointed out the spill and glass to the waitress, who quickly got someone to clean it up, but never asked if she was ok and ignored my sister when she mentioned that she tried to get her attention earlier about wanting salt/pepper and hot sauce and again when she dropped. When she finally returned, we were done. Some us with more than half the food on our plates. Never asked if we liked it, just brought dessert menus and we got a couple of desserts because we were still trying to celebrate sis' birthday. I mentioned to the waitress twice that was a birthday and made a note on the reservation, so I was hoping that there'd be something, but no. It was my sis's 50th so we're hoping for a special experience but it was rather blah. Lots of better places to go for a celebration. And the food wasn't quite good enough to bring us back. I've grown up on the east side of Pasadena and hate going into Old Town to pay for parking. It's great to see something new and exciting on this side of town, especially with such a sophisticated beer and wine selection! Plate 38 is a place I can take my parents and kids... and my brother loves it for the specialty beers. He tried the Old Thumper and loved it, but there are lighter lager beers as well for the Corona-seasoned like me :) As far as food goes, there is no question that everything is of the highest quality. Well worth any amount, because a great dining place like this is hard to come by on this side of town. We had the crostini with duck rillette... fantastic! and the more traditional heirloom tomato/pesto/cheese caprese-style crostini is next on our list. My mom loved the capellini pomodoro pasta (angel hair) with the creamy burrata cheese, my dad loves the pot roast. My kids loved the 4 Cheese Sexy Mac and burgers. All flavors were rich and exciting, and the staff were knowledgable and friendly! Plate 38 is goin places! So glad to have it back and better than ever. Did I mention the signature desserts look fantastic... we tried the chocolate apple bread pudding and it was the perfect topper with a glass of deep hearty Malbec for the winter. Positive: Chicken Marsala w/ mushroom truffle risotto, Chili burger, Mac & cheese, Rappini and Tirimisu were very tasty. Needs improvement: Prices are too high for their casual dining atmosphere (metal tables, finished concrete, no table cloths), long kitchen wait (took over 30 minutes for order) and poor location (major intersection of Colorado Blvd. & Sierra Madre) This restaurant is trying to be a neighborhood fine dining establishment, but locals can not support these prices frequently. Additionally it was not stated on the online Groupon offer that 18% gratuity would be added to your total BEFORE taxes and before the Groupon discount is applied. In a classy location, that tip would be suggested on the printout, not automatically applied. When we mentioned that this was not something noted on the Groupon page prior to purchase, John, our server replied "well, that's what we're doing." With nearly 1,500 people purchasing the offer, they should have a sign at the front counter saying, "Welcome Groupon Diners" and state the 18% mandatory tip- before dining. If it is not clear, the Groupon coupon was our first opportunity to explore the restaurant menu. With the way the dinner ended- 18% gratuity added to the sticker shock and left a very bad aftertaste to what was a nice, but expensive dinner. Location is easy to park - in a corner of a typical strip-mall type area in East Pasadena, away from Old Town and the usual trendy places/areas for window-shopping, cafe-hopping and such. The service: fair. Took a bit of time to get the server's attention....also waited about ten minutes for our bill. The sausage was overcooked on my order, the rest was okay. My sister said her potatoes were inedible (overly salted). I thought the prices average; everyone else felt it overpriced considering the mediocre service and inconsistent quality of the food. After leaving we noticed we were overcharged. We all know mistakes can happen - with a meal, service, quality. But from looking at other Yelp reviews, found being overcharged has also been reported by other customers. While on a Christmas lights excursion, we decided to dine in East Pasadena and stumbled upon a charming spot called Plate 38. This neighborhood gem proved to be a delightful find. Upon entering, the hostess welcomed us warmly, and her kindness extended to providing crayons for our son at the table. Our server was prompt and courteous, offering us drinks and informing us of the all-night Happy Hour on Mondays. Taking advantage, we ordered two glasses of wine. We also decided on the happy hour cheese platter, which offered great value for its size. For our son, we chose the Chicken Fingers and Baby Gem, while our main course was the Fried Chicken, a dish we opted to share. The flavors were exceptional, though I must offer a constructive critique-- the mashed potatoes were served cold. Yes. Plate 38 is back! The plce was closed due to unfortunate electrical fire..... I was at their soft opening and I noticed there a few menu changes. I love the high end comfort food idea. I recently visited Plate 38 and was thoroughly disappointed with the service. We arrived at 9:30 am and requested a table inside. Despite the restaurant being nearly empty with only one table occupied, the server refused our request, claiming that all the tables were reserved. This seemed highly unlikely given the time and the visible availability of tables. To make matters worse, the server had us wait a long time before even taking our order. The delay was frustrating and made us feel neglected. The overall service was slow and unwelcoming, which significantly impacted our dining experience. I hope the management addresses these issues, as better service and a more accommodating attitude would greatly improve the experience for future patrons. I will never go back! read more

I walked into Plate 38 expecting good food, great customer service, and to have an amazing brunch. Unfortunately, none of those things had happened. When I immediately walked in there was no host, when she did walk from the back she had an attitude with me and my fiancé not wanting to sit outside. At this time, plate 38 was not busy at all, I think that's why I was so dissatisfied. I wish that was the only thing that had went wrong, but when we sat down it took us 30 mins to get oysters and another 15 on top of that to get our food, that was put in at the same time. Came here for an early dinner last week, had a work thing in the area and they recommended this place. Did a quick yelp search to see if it was legit and 10 min later i was here. Came in and ordered a chicken burger, some fries and a coke. My coworker order some pasta. Service was quick, we sat outside it was the perfect weather. Our food was ready quickly and upon my first bite into my burger i was pleasantly surprised. Chicken was tender and the burger had some relic sauce. The fries were put in a cone stand thingy, they were awesome. It took a while to find the waiter... It was annoying as i ran out of my drink and wanted a refill. Overall fun place. read more

Lemonade was great then i order the angel hair pasta with the garlic shrimp and wow my wife is like hold up .and there was an actual Brillo pad string on my pasta so i call the waiter to take it back so while he was picking up the plate i took a bite of the shrimp and omg it had been soak in dish washer fluid ...omg i puke it right out ..i had to leave my wife was to scare to try her food that was my experience at this place 12:15 pm 12/12/16 and the waiter still wanted to charge me for the drinks .. I had a really good time here last friday night, really good time. A few of my girlfriends wanted to go out and we all met at Plate 38 because they had live music on friday nights. It was my first time here and it turned out to be a great first night. Food was good, as was the service. I am obsessed with The Republic of Tea and they have them by the bottle here, so I downed about 3 of them! The owner was walking around and mingled with us a little bit, which I always liked in small restaurants. We then went drinking, and the food here served as a great drinking base. Really fun nights, I highly recommend coming on friday nights. read more

I would give this place negative stars if I could, and it has nothing to do with the food. While the cuisine is mediocre if not artery clogging, and the service inattentive at best, the impetus of Plate 38's nadir is the immature and repulsive behavior exhibited by the restaurant's chef and owner, Robert Humphrey. Multiple times I have dined here with my wife, and multiple times we have witnessed the "owner" intoxicated at the bar, loud and obnoxious, sexually harassing patrons and employees alike. It's sophomoric and disgusting. After our last visit we vowed never to return. Grow up, you own a restaurant, not a frat house. read more

My husband and I eat here all the time since it reopened. There have been times where we've eaten there for dinner and then returned for breakfast the next day. There aren't that many places that have a good menu for all 3 meals of the day. On the dinner menu, I love the strip steak with peppercorn sauce, sweet potato fries, frito misto, and the shrimp pasta. On the lunch menu, the ham sandwich on a croissant is still my favorite. On the breakfast menu, I love the smoked salmon croissant, potato rosti, and any of their pastries. Great place. Highly recommend! read more

What happened to Plate 38? It used to be an undiscovered gem, with good food and outstanding service. Did the ownership change? Did the chef quit? The food is tired now, the place is a little dirty, and the paper menus are wrinkled and water-stained, as if they were scraped up off the parking lot. We thought the last two times were just aberrations, just today's sad burgers and surly service have convinced us that the great Plate 38 of yore disappeared during the pandemic. Too bad. The bucatini was a little better with the spiciness from the vodka sauce giving it a little punch, but the stand out was the boneless pork chop with broccoli and cheddar covered potato gnocchi. Pork chop was cooked perfectly, great flavor on the pork and the gnocchi hit as well. Overall, Italian spot in Pasadena seeing up didn't nice looking dishes. The agnolotti, croquettes and pork chop were definitely stars of the meal, while the pasta dishes didn't hit like we all hoped they would. I'd stick with the proteins and maybe skip the pastas.
