I always forget about this place whenever I'm down in old town. And places for breakfast and brunch seem to be so limited these days. We arrived just before noon and there was already a wait list and line for a table. When checking in, we were told it would be about a half hour wait or so. It's fine, they take your number and text you to let you know when your table is ready. Also, it's advised to look at the menu beforehand as when your table is ready, you order before being seated. It did take about half an hour or so till we got seated. We originally asked for a table outside but it wasn't available so inside it was. You order before being seated and a number placards is given for the table. Menu, it has a a lot of good dishes to choose from. The last time we were here the meal was great so we knew what to expect again. Started off with some mimosas, which was about 10.00 a glass. Also water was brought out. Every single one of the staff were so friendly which is nice to walk into a place so welcoming. Friendly hi, making sure everyone was taken care of and if anything was needed. Great customer service. Drinks didn't take long to arrive followed by the first item. The cinnamon apple French toast. It was quite nice with the crunch and apple jam. Everything was great when brought out that no extra syrup was needed. Also served with whipped cream. Within a Couple minutes after that, the entrees came out. An order of the kimchi buttered fried chicken Benedict. First off, it was delicious. Two big portions of Benedict, with kimchi added and the chicken had a lot of flavors. It wasn't too powering with the kimchi and worked really well. That came with their potatoes and a side salad. And the Norwegian Benedict with smoked salmon. Basically a smoked salmon Benedict with all the trimmings. The meals were great and the dishes were massive. We've seen a couple of people sharing plates and lots of leftovers. The food was great and delicious. Service didn't take long after ordering and staff were all very friendly. The only waiting was for a table but that's a given during the weekend. They are limited in hours. Mainly breakfast and brunch but the food was great. Until next time. It was packed. I was waiting to put my name down and a group walked right in front of me as soon as the couple in front of me were done. The hostess let this happen and when I got in front of these overgrown children and told them all to stand behind me and learn some damn manners, the hostess STILL didn't apologize for even speaking to them to begin with. She put my name down and then took the other party. I did notice the female hostess was the only unpleasant employee. I wanted to blame it on age, but another young man who seemed to be doing multiple duties roughly her age (16-7) was very kind and on top of everything- so was all the very young staff inside the restaurant. They were all welcoming, attentive, and gracious. The food? Subpar. We saw so many plates of the Nashville chicken eggs Benedict. We each got one.. we definitely could've gotten different things lol but it's what we were all craving. But because we all had the same thing, we were all able to come to the same consensus- some places are meat free, dairy free, ect but this place is SEASONING FREE! Atrocious. The only spice was a hint of spice as in HEAT not as in FLAVOR. There was no flavor in the chicken, in the eggs, in the coleslaw, no where. And the little side salad that it came with made absolutely zero sense- a bunch of arugula ,with one tiny tomato sliced in half, with some corn sprinkled on top.... Both were very tasty. The workers were really nice and the food came out relatively quick. We came on a weekday and the dining area was small and there was decent amount of people. So I can only imagine how busy it gets on weekends. Only problem was we wanted to sit in a specific spot but every spot we tried the tables were not cleaned or bussed yet. I LOVE Popping Yolk Cafe, I first started coming to the Alhambra location. This spot is fixed right in the middle of Old Town Pasadena. There's a great parking structure around the corner with 2 hour free parking. They have a reward point system using your phone number if you frequent the cafe often enough and can go towards different menu items. Matthew helped me order an iced ube latte and made me slightly more sweeter for me. This was perfect. I typically order their Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich and switch out the fried potatoes with French fries (this is an extra $3 charge). Matthew was very kind bc he came up to my take letting me know the kitchen was closing if there was anything else I wanted to order before they closed up. Thank you for going out of your way to let me know so I could put my food order in. As planned, I ordered the Fish Fillet Benedict (Poached Eggs, Deep-Fried Fish, Coleslaw, Tartar Sauce, Butter, Hollandaise Sauce). It arrived with a salad and house fried cubed potatoes. The eggs were done perfect, the fried fish amazingly succulent and tasty, sitting on a bed of coleslaw. Overall, not too acidic, optimally blended flavors that married both texture and bite. A lovely brunch. Anything they can do better? I would say that their potato cubes need to be larger to give more depth and the taste of potato to the plate. Small potato pieces also dry out faster and do not have much starch character.
