Several months ago my lady and I enjoyed a Food Wars episode on The Travel Chanel pitting two pizza making brothers against each other. The novelty behind these two apparently competitive businesses is the size of their slices. This is what sent us on our mission to the Adams Morgan area of D.C. We were on a quest to be peacekeepers in this war of the giant pizza slices. After a long walk from the Metro station we were disappointed to find the first competitor, Jumbo Slice, did not open for hours. We called their number, and oddly the man answering the phone greeted us with "Pizza Mart," which is the competition. This, the fact that the operating hours of the two establishments aren't exactly competitive with one another, and the fact that we saw one brother enter the establishment of his so-called competition, led us to believe that the Food Wars episode was staged, and that the Iraqi ex-patriot brothers are probably in business together. None of this mattered to us because all that we really cared about was taste. So, we only got to taste the slice from Pizza Mart, and we were not disappointed. It was delicious, and huge. I'll attach a picture of my lady devouring her slice so that you can see the size of the slice in relation to her head, and believe me she has a big head. Just kidding baby! There were three of us, and we all thoroughly enjoyed are slices of cheese pizza. As large as they are, we could not stop eating, and at the end I wanted more. The sauce and cheeses are very tasty. The brother operating Pizza Mart was very friendly, but carefully avoided our questions about the Food Wars competition between him and his brother. I won't hold that against him because he gave us a really good, and fun, dining experience. Although it usually takes something more special than pizza to get four stars out of me, I will grade this place on a curve. The best new thing I've tried in a looong time. I'm always feening for pizza so this was a special treat. Besides the slices being gigantic and filling; the pizza is extremely tasty! I believe that their pizzas are made from scratch, so they slices don't have that corporate Dominos, Pizza Hut, and Popa Johns taste about them. Wow. I'm salivating just thinking about it. A bonus for me is the fact that the PEPPERONI that they serve there is beef, and only beef (there was a sign up that said so). I don't eat pork, so it's great to find a place where I can enjoy pepperoni! The only thing I didn't like so much was the cleanliness of the joint. The counter where the dried hot peppers shakers and Parmesan cheese was pretty grimy. You won't like this if you are a neat freak or are a bit borderline OCD ;) All in all it's a fantastic place, and I'll definitely be making a trip to Adams Morgan JUST for a slice of that pizza in the near future! :) read more

I was going to use the same introduction paragraph I used in my Jumbo Slice review but upon reconsideration, it seemed a little tacky. So yeah, food wars, rivalry, jumbo pizzas, yada yada yada . . . This pizza was pretty good. Wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good. There was a noticeable amount of tomato sauce on this pepperoni slice and it had a slight spicy kick to it which I thought meshed really well with the pepperoni. The cheese was nice and melted and didn't get too chewy; the dough also tasted pretty fresh although the crust was a little soggy and lacked flavor. As most people point out, each slice is a grease fest that is sure to leave your taste buds groaning with pleasure and your arteries groaning with pain. As far as prices go, I don't think you could ever justify $6 for a slice even if it's a large size but I guess you're also paying for the novelty, assuming big pizza slices are a novelty in our nations capital. Pizza-wise, this was definitely a tasty slice, so much so that I would happily order this (drunk or not drunk) to eat once in a while. Pizza Mart provides delicious New York style pizza slices, only these slices are on steroids (2-3 times the size of an average slice). I enjoyed the classic pepperoni, which was noticeably spicier than your typical pepperoni pizza. The pizza is delicious but not extraordinary, it's the size of the slice that will blow your mind. The pizza slice is about $5 but it is huge...check my pictures if you can't imagine it. Two people can easily share one slice and you will be full. If you are only trying it 3 to 4 people can share a slice. One big slice is like 4 regular slices of an average medium pizza everywhere else. If you are super hungry, go for it. So on both occasions I've been to this place I've had that experience. I went for the first time about 7 months ago at approximately 5 p.m. on a weekday . I asked for fresh slices only one of them was fresh and the second one was an old slice even though they told me that it would be fresh. if you don't have fresh ones tell me upfront. Last night I went at 10 p.m. and I was completely sober I asked for a fresh slice with sausage and the lady said yes they can do that however all they did was take an old slice of cheese pizza and added the sausage and add new cheese on top. You can also hear a recording of the show on repeat while waiting for your pizza. We stopped in on a Saturday around 2:00pm and it was empty. The actual building is nothing exciting and it was really hot in there. There's about ten places to sit, all at high tops connected to the wall. I ordered a single slice of cheese for $5.50 and a Gatorade for about $2. I would say we waited about six minutes for our pizza to be done and then we picked up the slices from the counter. Holy crap! These slices are JUMBO indeed. A slice comes on two plates because one just isn't big enough. I attempted to eat it with a fork and knife but the plastic silverware here sucks, super flimsy. On to how it tasted: think back to when you were in school and you had pizza, that's what comes to mind. It tasted good but it's nothing to jump up and down about. I assume that the pizza starts tasting better if you add toppings but the plain cheese was just meh. There wasn't a lot of sauce which was 100% OK! I will say I was disappointed in the fact that the pizza wasn't crispy, not even a little. I think they would find it works better to cook the pizza twice in order to get a crunch. Enjoying this pizza isn't a reflection of bad taste; it's more like a crime against nature. I have eaten here once. It was the night of snowpocalypse part I. Like most 20-somethings in this city, I celebrated by bunkering down with friends and drinking copious amounts of bourbon. Then we made the epic trek from the Colombia Heights metro to Napoleon Bistro to go dancing, where we proceeded to dance our faces off and imbibe still further. By the time we left, it was 2:30. I hadn't eaten in eight hours. I had been drinking. In sum, anything sounded good - anything. To my misfortune - which at that moment concealed itself as luck - Pizza Mart was somehow open. Slices were ordered. We grabbed the boxes and started back toward the metro. Joyously, I picked up the slice, shimmering in the moonlight as grease flowed off the sides. I ate. I stopped in my tracks. "WHAT THE F*&( IS THIS?" Admittedly, I ate most of it - but I didn't enjoy it at all. See above for an explanation as to why I would do this. It was, without a doubt, the worst pizza I had ever eaten. Don't get me wrong: I really, really like a sloppy, cheap, not-that-great slice of pizza. But this was barely fit for human consumption. Disclaimer: I am from NJ and live in NYC so I am a bit of a pizza snob. I am not going to compare this pizza to my NY/NJ pizza because it's just not as good. Don't hate - I will allow you all to be crab cake snobs when you come to my land. So this place gets 4 stars solely on the fact that it is about 14x better than any other pizza in the MD/DC area.. However, as many have mentioned, this pizza is best eaten (a) when you are drunk, (b) as you are getting into a cab after having to negotiate a fare due to the fact that no one wants to drive to Friendship Heights from AM (little bitter, yup), and (c) if you do not mind getting hit on by the counter guy. I've been hearing about this place from my husband for years. He fondly refers to it as "the place w/ pizza as big as your face". This place has never been busy when we've gone here. It also helps that we stop in generally between 5-6pm, not late night. There is limited seating, always 1st come 1st serve. Now, if you've never been here, you probably expect their pizza to be much like other "late night" pizza joints. Hot, greasy, and never as good as it is when you've had a few. Pizza tastes average but not bad since they're not going for quality as much as quantity. Late night service is the allure. It's roughly 3am, a huge fight just broke out in front of Tom Tom's and some guy got his ass kicked so bad I would not know where to begin. I, of course, had the perfect view point having been dining on the greasiest piece of pizza known to man at Big J's. There are three Jumbo Slice places in Adams Morgan, Pizza Mart is probably the best, and it's the only one I have an address for... Anyhow, any of the three are the kind of places you'd only want to go at the end of a "BIG NIGHT" of drinking when you know you're not going to be awake long enough for your stomach to talk back to you. If you were awake your stomach would say something like, "Are you out of your God damn mind?" The slices are generally about the size of a mini-fridge but miraculously you'll find 5'1" 95 lb ladies taking down whole slices with a look on their face that screams paradise. I don't know how this is possible, but I would imagine that the mixture of pizza and beer makes the human stomach a black hole. The bottom line is that it's not the best pizza (sober), but after eight rounds of group therapy next door at Tom Tom's Big J's, Pizza Mart or Jumbo Slice are easily mistaken for a slice of heaven. read more

JUMBO PIZZA! This is the spot when you need a late night pick-me-up. The slices are bigger than an average person's face and the pizza actually has good flavor. You are pretty much eating a HUGE New York style pizza. The service is pretty good as the staff members are nice and respectful. The restaurant is divey with a lot of standing room. You can't miss this place (the other is Boli's Pizza, located a few shops down), bright lights and lots of people hanging around eating slices the size of their heads!
