We're an Italian family, and we came across Piciocchi's on our way back to Long Island from upstate New York last Saturday. From the moment we walked in, we felt at home. We met the owner, Stefano, and despite the restaurant being at its busiest peak, he couldn't have been more welcoming, kind, and attentive. Speaking Italian with him instantly brought us back to Italy. He embodies the warmth and hospitality we miss so much. The food was authentic, fresh, and clearly made with great attention to detail. We tried a little bit of everything on the menu, and every dish was outstanding. Honestly, it's hard to choose a favorite because everything was so good. Even our kids said they felt like they were back in Italy. They especially loved the pizza. Visited here for the first time since they moved for a graduation party and it was just not what I was expecting. The space is beautiful and the staff is nice enough. They are not the most friendly, but they were not rude by any means. The food came out so strange. Everyones food was a bit cold, and served all at different times for salads and apps. These items were served to us, while our entrees we had to get up and get, which they kept running out of so there was quite a bit of a line forming. The food itself was tasty, not the best Italian I've had in the area, but it was good. It being cold and chaotic though, sort of ruined the experience. I was visiting from Brooklyn to see my family in the area. My friend, who's a local, told me about a place that makes their own pasta and how they have a great lunch. Ok I'm in, I'm Italian, homemade pasta is right up my alley. We sat down, friendly staff (young and distant), but an extremely strange setting. It was like walking into a Wayfair showroom with a pasta kitchen. The branding was a bit horrid in my opinion, but I work in that industry, so I couldn't get over the esthetic before I even got to the food. The TV "paintings" with random art were the "highlight" truly... I'm being too kind. The wedding table numbers, really were killing me in the worst way. This place was like a mishmash of identities with no real clarity of execution or strategy on how to accomplish what they're trying to be. A crash landing of ideas with no real destination. Now the food and drink! The plates were the size of a small luggage! For starters, the "fresh" bread they offered with a rancid tasting olive oil and the tiniest drop of balsamic vinegar was appalling. The calamari was decent at best... it tasted factory made, the coating was thick and it came with the tiniest portions of sauce. I want my calamari, piping hot, with a really thin coating and a ton of sauce, that's just me. The chicken cutlet was a flavorless flour-dredged slab of meat. Barely pounded out and coated in a thin breading, with no seasoning, and it was crazy big! The Gnocchi four cheese was like eating dough turds in glue. The texture was not good at all, and reminded me of undercooked packaged pasta, and weirdly overcooked all the same time... like the water wasn't boiling and they added the pasta in while it was cold. Gnocchi should be pillowy soft and should literally fall apart in the mouth and the cheese sauce should not be like hair gel stuck to the food. It's Italian food, it's supposed to be herbaceous and well seasoned, this was food for non-Italians, who think they could like Italian food if it was just a little more bland and assimilated... without all the immigrant culture, ya know?! The best portion of the dish was the non-alcoholic drink, which is saying a lot. I genuinely hate to leave a terrible impression, but I really hated this meal, and I'm shocked by the reviews. We made a reservation for 4. We were seated & our order was taken in a timely manner. The waiter was great. My father ordered meat lasagna. There was no meat in the lasagna. I was a pile of lasagna noodles with red sauce and no filling. But the major problem for me was the atmosphere. It was extremely chaotic. The chef was carrying food out to the wrong tables. We were brought food 3 times that did not belong to us. The servers were following him trying to get the food to the correct tables. It just seemed very unorganized because of that. I've visited Italy several times, and every time I dine here, I feel as though I've been transported back--the quality and authenticity of the food are simply exceptional. I have gluten and dairy allergies, and the staff always goes above and beyond to accommodate me while still creating meals that are absolutely delicious. The drinks are equally impressive--beautifully crafted, unique, and always delightful. The entire staff is warm, attentive, and wonderful. I will start this by noting that the owner, Kristy, is a very pleasant and sociable person and it was a pleasure chatting with her at our table. There was no one at the front to greet us. We stood there for 5 minutes. My wife then walked around the restaurant to flag someone down to be seated. It was a chilly afternoon when we sat down at the outside patio for lunch. My mother-in-law had asked Christy for a hot tea. Christy let her know that they did not have hot tea and that they did not have hot drinks, so my mother-in-law decided to get an iced tea. The only thing that shows on the lunch menu is wine. My mother-in-law, my wife and I decided on food. My mother-in-law got pasta with red sauce and meatballs. My wife got a vegetarian calzone and I got a prosciutto focaccia sandwich with a spicy aïoli. My mother-in-law and I received our food first. She had eaten 3/4 of her food and I had eaten all of my sandwich before my wife even got her calzone. Kristy had come out multiple times apologizing for the weight stating that she didn't realize how long it took to make a calzone. The meatballs in the pasta were very wet metallic in flavor and bland with seasoning. It just tasted like a wet hamburger ball. All of the prosciutto was piled very deeply directly in the middle of the focaccia bread leaving a 1 1/2 inch border of bread around it so every time you took a bite at the edge of the sandwich the only thing you were eating was bread and nothing else. After we got done eating our meal, the person that cleared our plates asked if we wanted anything else and at first we said we did not want any desserts, but had changed our mind shortly after and I went inside to ask what kind of desserts they have. Kristy gave me their dessert menu and I see that one of the first items they have on the menu is espresso, and cappuccino. I then asked Kristy I thought you said you didn't carry hot drinks. She said all we have is espresso. I then pointed out to her that they also have cappuccino. She told me that you don't drink cappuccino before a meal only after a meal. I then informed Kristy that she never provided an option to have a cappuccino and that it is not her decision to decide what a customer drinks as a beverage at what time during their meal. She said "I'm the owner and Italians don't drink, espresso or cappuccino's before meal, only after meals". As for the dessert, we decided to take home the single serve tiramisu from the takeout cooler next to the register. When we got home to enjoy our tiramisu, it was noticed that the sell by date was yesterday. We figured we would give it a gamble, and my wife and I took one bite each and realized that the texture was very off and thick and the taste was so sour and off as well. The only thing that stood out with any of the food was the vegetarian calzone and the pasta sauce. Kristy kept going on and on about the pasta that she makes and how it is the best around authentic to Italy. In my honest opinion, pasta is pasta. Anybody can make pasta, but where it stands out is in the sauce and the sauce taste a decent. To close I pose these questions: 1. How does the owner of a restaurant not know how long it takes to cook their food to be able to time it properly and have the food come out at the same time for all guests so one of the guests doesn't have to wait an extra 20 minutes after the others have completed their eating? 2. Why would any Employee state that they don't carry an item for a customer when they clearly do? 3. Why does the owner of the restaurant that works in the restaurant not go through their inventory and remove old food off of the shelf let alone food that is accessible to customers at the register? read more

We got a high top at the bar which was way too small for dinner for 2, but all we could get within a reasonable amount to ti me (1hr wait). Drinks came out quick and wait staff rotated by often. Never got water, had to ask several times for silverware. Maybe bc we ate outside? Was annoying that we ordered a Chardonnay and there was a fly in it so the waiter replaced it. And then charged us for the replacement. When I pointed it out they took it off the bill but they replaced it for house wine and charged us for the Chardonnay we didn't drink bc of the fly. With Picciocchi's Pasta, downtown Scranton officially has a food scene where you can visit a rotation of solid restaurants without having to cringe and explain away all the deficiencies. The pasta at Picciocchi's is phenomenal. It's better than some places I frequent in NYC. Everything is there: ingredients, preparation, execution, and the portions are large enough to split. The main takeaway is that you could have spent your life dining at "great Italian" restaurants in NEPA, not ever realizing that this level of cooking was possible. Everyone who was sitting near us had the same reaction. It's like eating Italian food for the first time. I admire that the restaurant doesn't take itself too seriously, and offers customizable options for the inevitable customers who will try to strip down all of these fantastic dishes. The only knock here is that the dining room is very plain and almost slapped together. Better than kitschy decorations and walls that haven't been dusted in 50 years, but it feels like they just entered the space. Music was weird and too loud, A/C was too cold. My husband had chicken Parmesan and I had the eggplant rollatini with the pasta. There were many choices on the menu and the entrees we saw others enjoying looked great. I had an excellent lemoncelllo spritzer served beautifully with a dried lemon. The service was very attentive and the atmosphere was chic. By far the best Italian restaurant in the city and it was lovely dining at their new location in downtown last night. Their new, upscale location is separated into 2 areas - lunch and dinner. Their dinner area is spacious and great for large groups but I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. Every dish my table ordered was delicious and was exactly what I was looking for. The calamari was tender and the sauces paired great. My vongole with spaghetti tasted fresh and my party also enjoyed the lobster ravioli, cacio e pepe, and spinach and cheese ravioli with bolognese sauce. Our server was very helpful with any questions on which pastas to pair with which sauce. We were stuffed after dinner so we opted for a light vanilla bean gelato and it was the perfect ending to our meal. Picciocchi's is a wonderful addition to downtown. My family has enjoyed their previous location, and when I moved here in the summer I was excited to see what they had to offer. I have been here three times now, each experience better than the last, which is hard to beat. Very good food, great service, a solid selection of cocktails and nonalcoholic offerings. I have had the ravioli in the signature walnut cream sauce.. delicious, rich. I've also enjoyed seafood, steak, and a bit of my husband's gluten free pasta, which was fabulous as well. The ambiance is very nice, I love that they have a space for coats, and sometimes live music. It can get a bit loud in there, not a lot of material to absorb the sound, but to me this is not a big deal as I am often engaged in conversation anyway, just a little detail to add. General rule I've found to be true is you can judge a restaurant by the quality of the ice they use for their old fashioned this once again proved true with the cloudy air bubbles ice and the whole orange slice in the OF. How do you take people who come after us, who had reservations after us (we heard them tell their times)... and then told us they essentially had no room for us? Why make us wait and the girls forgot we were standing there. My husband had to ask for us to sit at an empty table, they eventually sat us there... never have been treated so poorly by any hostess before. We waited two hours to be told that the kitchen lost our ticket...so told us they didn't have a table for us then to never get our dinner... never have experienced anything like this. read more
