Let me start by saying that I LOVE a good fresh spring roll. I will also say, I have tried many an Austin spring roll and few live up to my standards. While the more traditional spring rolls are meat or tofu plus vermicelli and lettuce, I like the added crunch of things like carrots, daikon, cucumber and the fresh taste that basil and cilantro bring. I had the treat of attending an event at PhoNatic a few weeks back, and asked about their spring rolls for my next visit. They are more traditional but will add those crunchy items and fresh herbs upon request. Armed with this information, I returned less than a week later and ordered the #103 (Grilled Pork Spring Rolls) and asked them to add the carrots, daikon, cucumber, basil and cilantro. I also ordered the small #203 Pho Tai (Pho with rare eye of round) with the beef raw on the side so I could add it to the hot Pho and watch it cook. Frankly - these 2 items could feed 2 people. The Small Pho is in a bowl that seems as large as a child's head. My problem was that I could not choose between the two. The spring rolls were fresh and perfect. They make their own peanut sauce and it shows. The grilled pork had a great Asian flare and nicely set off the crunchy veges and herbs. Best part - you get 2 of them for $3.75. I have to say that they are up there in my top 3 Spring Rolls in Austin, but you have to remember to ask for the extras. Now the Pho. If any of you read a previous review, I am somewhat of a Pho virgin. I could not get those sweet spicy notes out of my head after my last encounter and this one did not disappoint. It was also fun adding the beef to the piping hot broth and watching it cook. The Pho was perfection but too much food for me to eat, even if I did not have the Spring Roll. One Hint - share it there or leave the leftover, because a day of all of that broth, spices, veges and meat melding in a to-go carton in the fridge and being reheated does not replicate the experience of it fresh. The flavors will over mix and you will not get that same experience. Just go back the next day for more. Which is exactly what I did. There is a reason they call it PhoNatic. Hmmmm, this used to be a solid lunch choice but I've really seen the light lately. This place is not really traditional feeling, many of their items feel "freshened" with different ingredients; that part I could handle. However, the menu has recently had an overhaul, which made things a touch more expensive. But the worst part is that it seems to be run by kids with very little oversight. Everyone there interacting with customers appears young (16-19) and somewhat unprofessional in awkward situations. Tables are often overflowing with dirty dishes and it can be difficult to find some place to sit, only due to the sheer amount of unclean tables. Pho, is near and dear to me, and it's hard to find a good location that serves it with such quality that it feels "homemade" if you will. So my Yelp friends raving about it, I took my lunch craving stomach here! Let it be known that I was EXTREMELY impressed by the cleanliness of the place, and the awesome "futuristic" gizmos and feel. The place was a little crowded, and after I spent about 10 minutes looking at their awesome TV menu (5 minutes were just to stare at how cool they were) I made my way to the counter to order. "Can I have (insert forgotten food number) extra spicy please?" "No we don't do that, there are condiments around the corner for you." That being said they did have a variety of things to put in your Pho (Onions, Shallots, Jalapenos, Pickled Jalapenos, and limes. But I still felt like I wanted more. Ummm ok... So they couldn't just throw in some Tien Tsin peppers? I also got 3 Vegetable Egg-rolls, which I KID YOU NOT were about the size of a roll of nickles... I was very unimpressed with the portions for the price. So when the Pho arrived, it tasted pretty decent, and when I say decent I mean semi-bland, store bought chicken broth with mushrooms and vermicelli noodles. I have never had to put so much Soy Sauce/Condiments in it to make it taste somewhat decent. This place has a totally solid bowl of pho in a very convenient location. Huge pluses are the self-serve kiosks and the condiment bar (I HATE having to ask for extra limes and jalapeños!). I'm the B that always asks for all white meat and two extra fish sauces with my vermicelli and this is the first place I've encountered that doesn't charge extra for either. The space is nice and airy and has good feng shui and your food comes out freakishly quickly. Also, the bathrooms are super clean. So why not 5 stars? For all of the perks that the homely, family-owned little pho places around town don't have, PhoNatic just doesn't compete with the food itself. Pho Van on Olen Road has some of the most magical pho I've ever had. One of the best soups I've ever had. One of the best meals I've ever had. They're just as quick (that little old lady owner is on your ASS to order from the second you walk in) and even cheaper (I believe a bowl is $6.45 as compared to PhoNatic's $7.25), so even though this is good pho, I don't think it was enough to break my Pho Van love affair. read more

Pho is my comfort food, so I'm always in search of a good bowl. I didn't have a lot of faith in finding one at a restaurant that seems so Anglicized, but this time, thankfully, I was wrong. Phonatic's menus are displayed on huge light boards when you walk in, so you can stand there and figure out what you want before you approach the register. They have three types of broth: beef, chicken, and vegetarian, and you pick your meats and vegetables from there. FYI, the vegetarian pho includes American and Asian vegetables, and two types of Asian mushrooms. The vegetarian pho is a deal breaker for me, because I don't eat chicken or beef. And as my friend found out recently, it's also gluten-free. You pick up your own silverware, napkins, and additional condiments at the drink bar, and choose your own seating. The decor is clean and modern and they play great background music--most often classic or alternative rock. A bonus! If you're not in the mood for pho, their menu offers other dishes, like noodle bowls, desserts, and various Thai teas and coffees. They also serve bottled wine and beer. To be honest, I haven't tried anything other than the pho, and friends and family have tried and approved the meat-based pho as well. Very Poor Attitude: Went for lunch today at the Anderson Lane location. Food was OK, but the fountain dispenser was out of sugar-free cola. I was there for supper about 8 days ago and they were out of sugar-free cola then as well. Today I asked the staff about this situation & was told they were waiting for "whoever supplies that" to make another delivery. They care so little about customer satisfaction they don't even bother to call for fresh supplies! I wonder what they would do if they ran out of vermicelli? Stopped by the other night as I was in the mood for something fresh and not too heavy, and bun seemed about right. I ordered the bun bowl with tofu and it was amazing. The portion was huge, especially for the price, and the tofu is crispy fried to perfection. It came with a sweet sauce which I dumped on it. There is a side area with more toppings (intended for pho) like cilantro and limes that I added as well. Between the tofu and the crushed and whole peanuts, it was quite hearty, but fresh and healthy just as I was hoping! I can't say enough good things about PhoNatic -- but I'll try in this review. As Mark G. says, it may not be -the best- pho in town but it's comes close. I'm pho-king sure about it. The broth is aromatic and herby with a rich meatiness. When I get pho, the vermicelli is always tender without being overcooked. The broth has a good mouthfeel and is really very tasty. On a good day, PhoNatic might take the crown for best Pho in Austin. When I get the "build your own grill", I get ONE OF THE BEST SALADS EVER because they have a salad option. Even my friends who hate salad love the salad option from PhoNatic. They don't skimp on the meat and they indulge me when I ask for Thai basil to add. I kind of like PhoNatic's contemporary take on pho. It's kind of like a Chipotle meets Pei Wei pho place. You get to choose your protein, your dish, and then any extras. For my protein, I had the lemongrass beef, which i highly recommend! Since it was summer, I chose to get vermicelli vs. pho and got a fried egg for my extra. I also got a single spring roll. My fiance got the grilled chicken, rice plate, and also a fried egg. I like how you get to mix and match to make your own dishes. The inside is also very clean, which is nice. Just a few seconds west of Burnet Road, PhoNatic is a legit Pho option for this part of Austin! Super clean and contemporary, PhoNatic does not disappoint despite its freshly-minted suburban surrounds (and yes, the adjacent Wal-Mart is either a plus or a minus, depending on your upbringing). I'm frankly surprised to be giving four stars to a corporate-style spin on what I've come to know as homey ethnic comfort cuisine. It's not the best pho in town, but it is still surprisingly good. The rare round steak and well-done flank in my bowl were both spot-on good and plentiful, the broth a bit less robust in appearance but not wanting for flavor, and the portions generous. The price was about 50¢ to a dollar more than what I might expect elsewhere, but that's hardly a budget-buster. If other choices like the bun (vermicelli) bowls are as good as the pho, this place could represent a viable alternative to the more traditional pho shops around. I'd definitely recommend it if it's close and convenient, and particularly if you or some of your party are new to pho and other Vietnamese food. The nice menu boards of offerings, along with a familiar pay-and-take-a-number to your table setup, may reduce some of the confusion and uncertainty that can accompany those early forays into pho, making for an easy, comfortable introduction. Keep up the good work, PhoNatic - nice job of streamlining the service to match American quick-serve dining norms, without seeming to compromise quality or dumbing it down for less adventurous palates. I'm from out of town and if I had realized this place was in a mall I would never have gone, but by the time I got here I was too hungry to turn back. The concept turned me around immediately: put together your own combo (I chose double tripe, tendon, brisket and round steak), punch in the order, then sit down and they bring it to you. I can never get enough jalapenos and always have to ask for more so it was nice there was a self service condiments bar where I could pile them on. (Though why no bean sprouts and leafy herbs over there?) Five stars for the idea and the convenience and also the t-shirts which I passed on because I have too many t-shirts already. But, unfortunately, this is only three-star pho. The broth isn't hearty enough... not enough beef bones. The ratio of meat to noodles was skimpy. Imagine if you will, hole in the wall/secret Vietnamese style pho that only cool people know about that is served in a very mainstream settings. That is PhoNatic Northcross for ya! In Houston, Pho joints are all over the place and it's not that hard to find a good one. And like any authentic pho restaurant, they all have their own spin on the recipe but for the most part stay true to the roots...except for those that use a crapload of salt and msg in their soup! SHAME ON YOU! So my expectations for a pho restaurant located in a busy shopping center weren't high at all. But I didn't feel like driving far so I figured why not take a chance? The reviews on yelp were good, so the odds of not enjoying it were low. Pricing is slightly higher than your usual pho restaurant but again the location and convenience is very nice. I ordered Pho Chin. When it came out I was glad to see that the serving size was big, the beef was still cooking in the broth and it smelled wonderful! The only complaint was the serving of bean sprouts and fixings that usually come with a bowl of pho, but it's not that big a deal. I took my spoon and gave it the broth test before I bless it with sriracha and hoisin sauce. It was really good! Not salty, very rich and balanced and not greasy. It was a very pleasant surprise! I immediately started dressing it up and dove in. Noodles were fresh and the soup had plenty of cuts of beef throughout the whole thing! Nothing is worse than going to a pho place that gets shiesty with their beef cuts! They were very generous with their portions. After about 15 minutes I was already one, but I was pretty darn hungry. For a mainstream looking place in a busy location they seemed to have nailed the homemade/hole in the wall magic that you find at those restaurants with the crappy service if you're not a regular. Which also brings me to another point...I've read a few reviews about this place where yelpers complain about the pho being made by..omg..wait for it..white people? What's next? It's the pei way of Pho. What I mean is, you stand in line and look at large vertical menus positioned like billboards. Once you place your order, you receive a whataburger number. Then find a nice seat and wait for your meal. The space has large windows and great natural light. I think Jewel was on the radio... definitely not your Vietnamese vibe with asians servering you Pho. I had the Pho with meatballs and it was pretty tasty. It's right up there with all the great Pho places in Austin. One minor drawback, they don't take AMEX. I ordered the "403" and asked the girl up front if they could include some sort of spicy factor after she told me the soups don't come that way (I always though pho was accompanied by chili paste and jalapenos?). I loved the broth and the flavorings (even though they were little packets of hoisin sauce and spice that I added) and it was the perfect meal for my sore throat and plugged sinuses. My only gripe was the egg noodles tasted odd, maybe that's just way egg noodles taste but I didn't dig them. The chicken was "meh" and the shrimp and pork dumplings had an odd texture. I think I just need to pick different fillings next time because I really did enjoy the broth and veggies and the amount was more than plentiful. Just went to the place and I am happy to write the first review. Let's just say in a nutshell, this place has real potential. They have a very large menu and lots of good stuff to choose from. My girlfriend got the steamed bun bahn mi sliders which were a unique idea. The pork and veggies were spot on, but the buns were a bit dry. I got a giant bowl of marinated pork on vermicelli noodles. The pork was well seasoned and delicious. The bowl came with a lot of fresh veggies (cucumber, bean sprouts, onions, peanuts, cilantro, lettuce, etc.) Only complaint was that the noodles were served cold which made my pork lose its heat faster. It's topped with carrots, cilantro and amazingly fresh cucumber that really makes this dish shine. I am leaving off the jalapeño in this review because honestly it was way too spicy. I pick mine off each time. They leave the seeds on the jalapeños so it really adds too much spice for my tastes. $5.95 gets you an order of three. Just do it! Trust me! Shrimp and Pork Springrolls: I ordered a single order of the shrimp and pork springrolls. The colors were bright and enticing. It is served with a peanut sauce on the side. Definitely utilize this side to get the full taste of this dish. The shrimp tasted fresh. Could have used more pork. It was cut very slim and was almost absent from the taste in my opinion. Pho Ga Hon Hop (Pho with chicken and noodles): This was the winner for me. For $7.25, you get a giant bowl of soup. It was giant for me anyways. It gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling. I've been a fan of Pho ever since one of my best friend's mom made me THE BEST bowl of pho I've had to this day. I'd say I eat Pho 2-3 times per month. PhoNatic is not the best pho I've ever had. Truthfully, it's somewhere in the middle. They won me over with their exquisite customer service and delicious appetizers and side dishes. When you go, try the Banhmi sliders. The are very simple and delicious. Add a little Chili sauce, and it's one of my favorite Austin snacks. This is a great location and the food is always good. The service is always friendly, fast and appropriate . The dining area is kept clean and tidy even during the busier times of day. Parking can be a bear since this area stays busy the spots stay full during the lunch time rush. If you don't mind a very short walk you can always park at the Walmart parking lot next door. It is seriously close. I'm holding back on the 5 stars do to my take out order being goofed a time or two. This is a problem since the very nature of take out is to get your food and run. No one wants to have to go back fight for parking and wait on a correction. I want to start by saying that PhoNatic blows Pho Thaison out of the water. I've gone to Pho Thaison a few times and have been extremely disappointed with the pho dishes that I refuse to go back. So, naturally, I've been wanting to try PhoNatic. I love the walk-up order system. The food comes out quick, and they always bring your spring rolls out first so you can be snacking before your food comes. The pho is great. The broth is tasty, the meat is not super fatty and low-quality like a lot of pho places in Austin. Normally, you get a plate of lime, raw jalepenos, sprouts, cilantro and basil at pho restaurants. Here, there is a full bar of things you can put in your pho, my favorite being PICKLED jalepenos. So good. On the day I went to PhoNatic, the place smelled horrible. It smelled like moldy mops. I almost gagged on the smell. That's why I'm giving it a 3 stars. When I can go back and give it another chance, if there's no smell, I'll bump my score to a 4 stars. I love pho. I really, really do. This is not good pho. The broth is thin, but aggressive and much, much too salty. There really aren't enough noodles--at least in the large bowls. The vegetables in the veggie pho are more or less raw and the whole thing came out so hot that I had to wait nearly 10 minutes before I could really even start eating. This is the closest pho restaurant to me in Austin and I had heard that pho, and Vietnamese food in genera, in Austin was supposed to be good. I'm actually pretty disappointed. I'll have to keep going on my search for good pho in Austin. The one redeeming feature was that there were large strips of some nice, chewy mushroom in the veggie pho that were delicious once they had cooled below the temperature of molten rock. read more

On flavor alone PhoNatic is a 5-star restaurant, but it's terrific atmosphere has made it my new favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Austin! First the food: I'm adventurous so the first thing I ordered was their special pho, and it was absolutely terrific, really hit the spot, truly fantastic and other superlatives. Their spring rolls were also good, and good spring rolls are important because the spring roll is the fries of Pho. But what I really love about this place are the little things: a self-serve soda fountain and toppings bar? YES PLEASE! Nothing grand or spectacular. Interesting setup from the usual seat and get your order made. I think their setup is more efficient for this type of business. I've had their Pho Bo Kho (Pho Beef Stew) and after receiving it. It was lacking the baguette bread to dip into the stew. Blasphemy. I asked them but they had no form of bread to dip into the soup. They carried them originally but just drop it all together. Sad day for Pho Bo Kho. Shouldn't offer it without the bread. Condiments (veggies, hoisin sauce, sriracha) etc.... readily available. I think some people needs to be educated with eating pho. I noticed only a few like 1-3 tables had Hoisin and Sriracha sauce on their table. A lot had Sriracha only. And majority had neither. That's so weird. The broth isn't flavorful by itself. You need both of the sauce to enhance it to a much more edible state. But to each his own I suppose. 3 star based on taste. I had the 212 which is essentially a Pho Dac Biet. No flavor in the broth, it was very watered down and bland. Came with enough bean sprouts, but basically no other greens to throw in. This is basically fast food pho, or I would say Amercanized Pho. I ordered some spring rolls for myself and a large $15 bowl for my two small kids to split and asked for an extra bowl. When it was brought out in a large bowl and a small salad bowl was provided, I asked if it would be ok to have a large one so I could make it even.... the woman seemed to indicate it wasn't possible, or that it would be too much trouble with her expression and body language. I said "if you can, great, if you can't, it's no problem" -- I honestly didn't think asking for a larger bowl was a problematic request. Then I got up to get my forks. A burly goateed guy with a chip on his shoulder decided either my words or tone were rude on my part and went out of his way to walk near me and began to lecture me... and insult me in front of my kids. I was trying to make sure my kids couldn't register the negative situation and I told him to have a nice day and brushed him off. He kept trying to rile me up and continued to insult me in front of my kids and even addressed my kids (5 and 8)... I felt extremely vulnerable as a female alone with two kids and finally told him to "get the (expletive) away from me!".... pleased, he took his disgusting self out the door while waving the middle finger at us and hurling insults. Not a single staff person blinked.. or did a thing. They just looked like complete zombies! Pretty sure I could have been stabbed and no one would have done anything. This place used to be pretty great, with a nice condiments bar, and clean environment. I've just been so disappointed with the decline in service and food for the last few years, I don't even know why we went... it feels kind of dirty and depressing now... and now I've had this wonderful experience... The strategic marketing to make ordering easier and customizable for anyone takes away from the experience I prefer- an almost-hole-in-the-wall with hearty comfort food. This place is clean, has good taste in decor for today's generation, and advertises fresh ingredients. PhoNatic is good for anyone who want a fast meal and wants to play safe. You won't end up with a bowl of pigs blood or pigs feet, because you decide what you want in your soup. Pros: Still, the pho is well priced and good. They deliver fresh veggies, which is a must. Of all the places I've tried be "Pho"... hehe get it? before... alright, bad joke on me.... How shall I begin... Here's what we got and how it was... 101 - Vietnamese egg-roll YUM! Crispy, non muddled flavors, I really liked it. 102- spring roll: Cold, and fresh, I didn't care for them however not because it was bad, I've just had better and I also like a bbq pork with shrimp not a slice of pork that seems like it would have been in my pho soup. 107- bahn mi sliders: This was my fave app of all!!!! Full on flavors and in a Peaking duck bun! I can't describe it much better than that....The pork is bbq pork (asian style) and made the sliders come alive with flavor. 203- Pho with rare steak and what I got was completely different than what was pictured.. the meat was fully cooked instead of rare. It was still good just wasn't expecting what I got. I found it to be much like the Pho I've had in other places but much simpler and the broth was good. I'm still in search of the Pho that beats them all.... 409- Stew- it was ok, Meat was tender but I didn't care for the taste of the seasonings... to me it had a taste on the back end that some Mexican dishes share, I've yet to be able to describe it and I know it's more of a personal taste at this point because I'll have others taste and try to explain what I taste and well other's just accept it as part of the seasonings and I find that "part" to be something I don't care for. So with that being said.... It had tender meat and very oily but my husband enjoyed it. I found it to not be my style.... It's a come back place for us and I'mma try their version of the Wonton Mein ;) can't wait for that..... read more

The place is very clean and convenient - you walk in, and the menu is next to the do-it-yourself kiosk... from there, you go to the condiment bar and get your own drinks, utensils, and condiments like onions, green onions, cilantro, jalapenos, sriracha and plum sauce. I like the fact that you don't need someone to refill anything for you, and once you are done, you choose to tip or leave. The pho is ok, I have definitely had better elsewhere. Personally, I found that they use too much star anise in their broth, giving it a licorice taste. The rice dishes are delicious here, and the chicken broth-based soups are really good. Lastly, their pork spring rolls are really fresh and have fried egg roll skin tucked inside, giving it a nice change in texture! I love their filet pho and you HAVE to try the Bahn mi sliders. There was a point in time where this is all my husband and I wanted to eat every single day. I think their portions and price are great too. read more
