Num Vanh Roum Mit ( Iced)
    Edwyn A.

Excited to try more! I've been sick most of the week and I really wanted to try this place so I ordered a few items for delivery that would be easy on the palate. I got the Lao fried rice which was a good portion. The shrimp was cooked perfectly; so hard to find properly cleaned and cooked shrimp in fried rice. The crispy rolls were tasty but could have been cooked a little more. Since I've been sick the num vanh roum mit was my favorite. It's dessert of coconut milk soup with different fruits , pearls, and jellies. When I'm better I will try more of their menu.

This is very authentically Lao. The lao sausage and sticky rice and nam khao is wonderful. The jeow mok len (tomato sauce) left a little to be desired, but everything else was incredible. I'm really wanting to try their jeow bong (chili paste) next time. I'll definitely be returning to try everything else. Definitely reminds me of home for sure.

chicken fried rice (spice level 6)

THIS is what I want when I think of Thai chicken fried rice. I ordered the chicken fried rice spice level 6 on Uber Eats. The spice level 6 was slightly spicier than I imagined, but I do love spicy. The container seems small for what you pay when you first receive it, but then you realIe how heavy it is and how much food comes in it. I also ordered the mango sticky rice rolls, but was so bummed because they were sold out. You have definitely gained a new customer!

We were in town visiting from Denver and it's been hard to find lao food there. This was our favorite food during our trip to Austin. Everything reminded me of my grandmas cooking. I couldn't recommend this place more for some authentic lao food. Make sure to get the beef jerky with sticky rice!!

The space itself is very gorgeous with a lot of decorations adorning the walls. The high ceilings and windows also gave a very authentic SEA feeling and the whole space felt very cozy and comfortable. The staff were all super kind and friendly as well. For drinks we got the basil sparking fizz which was so refreshing and had the perfect citrus kick that I needed to wash down all of the rich dishes. For the food, we got the taro frites, egg rolls, larb, and crispy rice. All of these were amazing. The taro frites and egg rolls were super crunchy and not too oily and acted as good palate cleansers. The larb and crispy rice were also light but the flavors had a lot of depth. You can also tell that the meat was high quality cause nothing had a smell. It was an amazing dining experience and I can't wait to be back.

At first, the menu was a bit limited and didn't have Lao staples like jeow som! But their menu has improved a LOT with great bar food versions of Lao dishes. You can't go wrong here with whatever you order (and thank god they kept that Lao hotdog lol), but there are some things you MUST get. It is VERY hard to get nam khao in Austin, but although there is no competition in the area, they still do it right here. It is SO good, perfect crunch, and finally has enough lime! It fixed that craving for me RIGHT up. Good crunchy peanuts and everything. They had a khao piak special as well. Normally I wouldn't really order khao piak because it's such a homey, easy-to-make meal in theory. But for some reason, I can't make it the same way as how they did it here. It was my favorite thing I tried last night. The fried chicken skin was an amazing addition that you'll end up fighting your friends for. Their tam mak hoong is also so legit. 17 chilis to make it, and you know they thum that papaya! The tomatoes were great for a sweeter bite. Although I'm pretty bad with spice, it wasn't the hottest I've ever had, which might be a bit more palatable for others. However, you can customize the level which is really nice for a place that makes smaller portioned food as a bar spot. The place feels like family and I enjoyed seeing such a diverse customer base come in. If you also wanna hear from good Thai music too... perk up LOL!

Until this year, I never noticed right across the street was Vacancy Brewing and the SXSE Food Co food truck. I took advantage of an Austin Asian Restaurant Passport that benefited a local charity, while also promoting local Asian restaurants. SXSE Food Co was one of the participating restaurants, and I wanted to take the opportunity to try Laotian food. The food was solid, with the flavorful sweet and savory balance similar to Thai and Vietnamese food. The skewers were solid but the crispy fried rice was my favorite dish. It had amazing texture with the crispiness and chewy nature of the sticky rice. There's also freshness from the herbs. The dish overall reminded me of the savory sticky rice with Chinese sausage we make in Cantonese cuisine, and the nostalgia made me love it that much more.

The rice is genuinely crispy, infused with the warm spice of red curry and fragrant herbs like Thai basil, cilantro, and scallions, for a full sensory experience. There's even some coconut for those rich, toasted notes to round it all out. Just be sure to specify vegan because they also have a version with beef. They're parked out at Vacancy Brewing which means you're never too far from an excellent option to soak up that last beer.

The tacos fell apart before I could get them to my piehole and what fell out was mostly tomatos and very little pulled pork 'chunkettes' that were hard to find. Hey. Speaking about home, the story on the truck explains the origins and how this was their mamma's cooking. I don't like to say bad things about your mamma's cooking so let's stop here :) Could be that it's just for someone else though and that's ok too. When you walk in, you can place your order at the counter. I ordered the Brussels sprouts salad. I asked for the jalapeños and sauce be on the side since I do not eat spicy hot foods. I wanted to add fried tofu, but the person talking my order said the $7 fried tofu addition was just for the curry and I would have to order the appetizer so I passed since I was just one person. There was plenty of seating in the dining area and they brought the food out when ready. My salad had jalapeños and sauce on it even though I asked for them to be on the side. I was able to remove the jalapeños and it was not that spicy. The salad had fried Brussels sprouts with sweet and spicy sauce, cabbage, basil, cilantro, mint, onion, jalapeño, crispy steamed bao bun. My suggestion would be to replace the bun with a fried tofu option and that would be amazing. It was a very herby and fresh salad with all the fresh herbs. Overall I liked my salad and want to try other items on the menu like the bento box and bowls. Sad to see that this establishment will be closing soon.

My friend who I…read morecame with and I have tried most of the East Asian restaurants in Austin that seem good and are within a reasonable price point, so I really had to do my research to find one that we hadn't been to yet. I had the katsu curry udon, which overall did not have very good of a flavour. My bar is pretty low for chicken katsu and Japanese curry. I am usually easily pleased with these foods, but this was not the case. It wasn't particularly bad however, just mid. My friend got the gyudon bowl, which we both expected to be a bowl of rice with some beef on top, which the picture shows on the online menu. However, it was almost soupy. It was like a pond of beef liquid surrounding a small island of rice. The sogginess was not expected or welcomed. She told me it was good at first, but then the sauce got too salty. I took one bite and felt the strength of the sodium. This is the type of sauce that leaves you dehydrated for the rest of the day. We didn't like the onsen egg either, but we hadn't had one before, so it might just be a flavour we're not used to. This restaurant seems reasonably popular from what I've read online, but it was almost empty when we were there on a Saturday from 6:30-7:30pm. I found that odd. The cocktails on the menu seem good, and they are reasonably priced. I read reviews warning others not to park in the lot right next to the restaurant. The actual parking lot is south of the restaurant and next to a tattoo shop. They have signs posted on the front door to warn customers, but just be extra cautious about it!

You order at the counter, seat yourself, and then a server will bring out your food. They did let us know that our food would be in to go containers and asked if it was ok before taking our orders. Not sure why this was the case, but I didn't have an issue with it at all. Maybe not the place to go on a first time date at unless you're going for a super casual vibe. The soup I ordered is where the experience fell short. I've had tom yum many times in the past, and what I expected was a more deep, sour and spicy flavor, and it was not that. The broth as you can tell by the color in the photo was pretty clear (light in taste), and was slightly spicy and sour. They do ask you how much spice you prefer (0-5), and I picked 3, thinking that it would be a decent level. Maybe I just have a higher tolerance. I usually order curry or fried noodle dishes at Thai restaurants, but I wanted to try something new this time. Just didn't turn out as I had hoped. Everything else looked great on their menu, and I do want to give this place another shot. The servers and host were very friendly, and the restaurant itself was comfortable and casual.
