Upon entering, Kim Phung has a nice, clean atmosphere with service is super quick! Having been one time, the food was solid. Beef lo mein was good but not particularly exciting; maybe I should try something different next time. Fresh food for sure but should I go back? The $10.99 lunch special is super inviting but that's ONLY pork. Not being a pork enthusiast, that doesn't appeal to me strongly. At $14 for lunch it's at the top of the budget but it's a convenient location for me. Drive out of your way to go here? Probably not. We had quite a poor experience here. It looks like a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant from the outside, but it is ginormous inside. We walked in at 7pm on a Sunday, and all the tables were empty. It was eerie. The restroom was very dirty. The 3-in-1 cashier/server/cook who had a very couldn't-care-less attitude took our orders at the counter. I ordered the grilled pork banh mi. The bread tasted a little weird, but otherwise it was fine. Tragedy struck when my friend who ordered the pork and shrimp spring rolls received spring rolls with only lettuce. I tried it, and it was gross. She informed the 3-in-1 employee, who proceeded to make them again. She brought them to our table, told us that she was "on another planet," and said "at least you get free spring rolls," in reference to the gross lettuce rolls. However, these new spring rolls had shrimp, but no pork. The travesty! Defeated, my friend ate her spring roll as she did not want to ask again for her proper order to be made. BEWARE!!! I am giving Kim Phung 1 star because they are being dishonest and are impersonating Super Thai Cuisine on both Door Dash and Grubhub. Yesterday, I ordered what I thought was Super Thai Cuisine on Door Dash and paid over $40. My delivery driver then delivered an order from Kim Phung. I tried reporting this to Door Dash but they said a merchant is allowed to name themselves whatever they'd like to on their platform. I think it's dishonest and wrong of Kim Phung to impersonate another establishment (one that nearly has 5 stars) for financial gain. Yelpers, please know that if you try to order Super Thai Cuisine online and you see "7601 N Lamar Blvd" you are getting Kim Phung and not Super Thai!! Go in person and stay off Door Dash and Grubhub! As I was casually looking at the menu on the wall outside, I see this lady make a beeline for the door. There was no hesitation in her demeanor, this lady knew what she wanted! I stopped her right before she opened the door, I said excuse me is this place any good? She stopped and said "Oh yes it's like the best in this entire area! It's been around like forever, I've been coming here for years". So as we both walk up to the counter to make an order, she already had one waiting for her. She begins to chit chat with the man behind the counter like they knew each other by name, probably cause they did! Proof that she definitely has been coming here for years. At this point I'm like okay, this is definitely going to live up to her hype. So I ordered the Rice Clay Pot House special, cause that sounds different from my usual. There's also no way im leaving without trying the fried dumplings. Everything was amazing! I almost thought there was no rice (was at the bottom), that's how much meat and vegetables they put in my dish! I'm usually more of a fan of steamed dumplings but man these fried dumplings hit the spot as well. I walked out of that restaurant feeling like Buddha. haha The guys working the counter were very nice. There was no one really in the restaurant. Quite literally the worst shrimp rolls I've ever had. These are made with iceberg lettuce and bean sprouts. No rice noodles what so ever. Also the shrimp were not deveined. We visited on a Monday night so I wasn't expecting a killer service or packed restaurant. Walking in there was a half-erased whiteboard that instructed us to go to the back of the restaurant to order. No employees to be seen. In the large space we were 1 of 3 tables. A young man came from the kitchen area and stared at us until we told him we wanted to order for dine in. His only response, "ok", was followed by an awkward silence as we found our own menus on the side of the register and looked over them. After a few minutes we ordered a chicken pad thai, fried dumplings, and sesame chicken with fried rice and a side of lo mein. Total: $55. After filling up our drinks at the soda fountain, we made our way over a sticky floor to a booth that was covered in chunks of rice. We had barely sat down to contemplate the eerie silence when another man made his way from the kitchen to our table with a small mountain of pad thai and dumplings. I mean, portion size is why they get two stars. Next came the sesame chicken and lo mein. The rice never found its way out of the kitchen. Both the young man and kitchen guy disappeared for the rest of our time there. The speed at which the food flew from the kitchen was enough to raise suspicion. Mt. Pad Thai was luke-warm to cold on the outside and hot as lava inside. Clearly microwaved. Ugh. I hate leaving this review. I've been coming here since I was a teen, so almost 20 years. The service used to be impeccable and the food was always wonderful- my ultimate comfort food. I moved outside of Austin a few years ago and have only ordered to-go from the south location since I moved, which was always good. I happened to be near the north Lamar location after having a stressful few days. I figured I could get a late lunch and some comfort food to de-stress me. I popped in at 3:30 and ordered. The restaurant was empty. The cashier seemed completely uninterested in taking my order. Whatever. We all have bad days. I ordered spring rolls, a vermicelli bowl, and hot green tea before seating myself. The cashier brought my entree first, which was fine, but considering how blah she was about taking my order, I asked if the spring rolls would be out too. She said yes. I noticed I didn't have silverware - as in no forks were in the cup on the table that holds chopsticks and forks was lacking forks. I asked if I could get silverware, she got another cup from another table and put it on my table. Her annoyance was very apparent. She then brought out my spring rolls. After about 25 min or so I noticed I hadn't received my green tea. I went up to the cashier to see if I could get some water while I waited for my tea. She gave me a cup for water and told me my tea would be right out. After a couple minutes, she got up, grabbed a random mug and went to the kitchen. A few minutes later, she brought my tea in the same mug. So she had basically just completely forgot about my tea so that's why it took 30+ min to receive. The tea used to come in super cute teapots, so I guess that's a thing of the past. As for the food, it seemed dry/old and was nowhere near the quality it used to be. My husband and I have been going to Kim Phung for over 25 years, it was ALWAYS packed and really good. We hadn't been there in several months so we decided to go today for lunch. They completely changed their egg rolls; they used to be so fresh tasting but now they taste more like frozen egg rolls...blah. The pork was just as good as before but please, bring back the egg rolls you had before and we'll both be SO HAPPY! And yes, the lady behind the counter was less than enthusiastic about taking our order. You should show your customers how happy you are that they decided to eat at your establishment. I have come here for years but today will be my last. The man at the register was rude and when I pointed out that my daughters order was wrong he said no she ordered vermicelli. No sir vermicelli does not sound anything like pho, and he refused to correct the order I had to actually purchase another antre of pho and he wasnt going to give me a receipt for the second order so I just stood at the register until he did. You start with a walk to the left as you enter, up to the register where you'll order your food and now they have a nice selection of domestic and import beer, wine and sake. This is for the It's Pho Girls restaurant on the Grub Hub App, It's Pho Girls is the Doing Business name that also have the same name as Kim Phung, both have the physical address or 7601 North Lamar. The GH driver called me and he only speak Spanish so he have to use the translator so I can understand speak back to him. I'm assuming the restaurant owner Phương T. is the one who called me first and she said the order was there, the GH driver said she did not want to give him the order. This is a problematic restaurant and I can tell that she was playing a game. I can see the order I placed on the GH App, the GH driver drove to the address and also see the order on his App, but Phương T. keep staying that she did not receive GH print out from her machine and she wanted me to pay over the phone for food that I already paid on the GH App. Phương T. or the employee said this happened to her a few time before. I Chatted with GH and she told Dunell "the order is ready," and then I Chatted with Ernest and Ernest have to refund me because I requested. I stated to him that this restaurant owner or the employee is not professional and there's something wrong on her end. It's sad because GH doesn't see the daily activities of the restaurants they have on their App to verify. I'm not giving up on local businesses and so I ordered from another restaurant in Austin the same hour and they were on time and the food was correct so I learned to stay away from Kim Phung-It's Pho Girls. So I have been going to Kim Phung on N Lamar for probably 8-10 years, a very loyal customer because the food was good but not always the service. So I called to let them know not only was my order wrong but there was PLASTIC in my food! Two phone calls later I was given the managers number and then by the manager I was belittled, berated and yelled and cursed at and finally threatened. I told him to not call back and 3 calls later was forced to tell this lunatic I was calling the police all because he didn't want to refund my money for THEIR mistake!! I've been coming here off and on since Kim Phung opened in the early 90s. It was a really good restaurant. This is not the same place - they should change their name. I went for lunch last Friday - didn't have time to go somewhere else (there were few cars in the parking lot). Ordered bun (rice noodles) w/egg rolls and grilled pork (and tea). The egg rolls were lukewarm on the inside. The grilled pork was OK. The bowl had a ton of noodles in it, but the only veggies were bean sprouts and iceberg lettuce - none of the fresh pickled vegetables that help make the dish so tasty were there, and the fish sauce serving size was probably the smallest I've ever seen. As I left, only then did I notice that ALL of the plates on the tables left by customers were mostly full. I'd think the owners would get the message, but I think not... Yelped a nearby Viet restaurant and this was what we ran into. Space is big and open. Clean. You order and pay at the counter. Here's what we got: - "steak pho" (which was not steak at all, but was regular pho tai) - classic spring rolls (pork, shrimp, vermicelli) -- it was a good size, but wrapped sloppily----like a bumpy burrito. HA. Oh well! - egg noodle with duck leg -- the duck leg was on the sweet side (wasn't a fan of that). Not sure how long the leg has been cooked in the broth because the meat fell off the bones easily, but skin was mushy and seemed old. On the other hand, the broth was delish. it also came with plenty of veggies (broccoli, celery, 2 types of mushrooms, carrots). I was pleasantly surprised that our dishes turned out decent. Usually I avoid Viet restaurants that serve Viet dishes along with Japanese, Thai, Chinese, etc. Service was non-existent as the girl was only a cashier and busser.
