I was so excited to try this new highly rated Lao restaurant in Austin, but sadly my experience…read morewasn't as stellar. To start, I had issues ordering from the 5610 Food Co website and ended up ordering from their Flipdish one instead. Once my order was placed, I didn't know when to pick up because an estimated time wasn't provided. So after letting over half an hour pass, I checked in on the self service ipad to find out my order was delayed. Being a ghost kitchen, there was only one person manning the counter so I had to wait a bit longer until my order was finally brought out. For food I ordered the following: Nam Kao-This tasted like a fried rice dish but Lao style with the addition of their traditional sausage as we opted for the original version. I couldn't taste too much of the red curry but I did like how they added crispy rice which gave it a nice texture. Heavenly Beef Jerky- We've had this before at other restaurants, but this meat was very chewy and tough, and in terms of flavor for some reason it left a soapy aftertaste... Fried Pork Riblet Combo-Was excited to try this as another yelper suggested it, but again, this riblet was very dry and rubbery, but I did like the rice. Kua Kee Laow Mr. drunky-Such a fun name reminding me of Thai drunken noodles. This dish was a good filler. Sakoo Yat Sai Moo-This was my favorite thing here! These were very easy to eat, reminding me of Tang Yuan, and instead of black sesame paste you have pork dressed in a sweet/savory/fishy dressing. Overall, I'd rate it as a 2.5 stars as I wasn't especially impressed with my first visit, but hoping I came on an off day as I really do love seeing more Asian representation. I think they are still fairly new so hopefully this is a learning curve and I unfortunately was part of the growth experience. If anything, I would come back for the Sakoo Yat Sai Moo (tapioca pork balls) but honestly it looks like they rotate a lot of their menu item and it might not be available then.

The food is much different than its Thai siblings. Larb and Papaya Salad are distinct from Thai and in the case of Larb this is a benefit. In the case of Papaya salad, the unfiltered fish sauce leaves a much more fresh fish flavor on the front of the palette and I'm not sure most people will like that. The Lao dog was fun and I'll come back to try the burger. The Mango Sticky Rice is some of the best I've ever had.

The space itself is very gorgeous with a lot of decorations adorning the walls. The high ceilings and windows also gave a very authentic SEA feeling and the whole space felt very cozy and comfortable. The staff were all super kind and friendly as well. For drinks we got the basil sparking fizz which was so refreshing and had the perfect citrus kick that I needed to wash down all of the rich dishes. For the food, we got the taro frites, egg rolls, larb, and crispy rice. All of these were amazing. The taro frites and egg rolls were super crunchy and not too oily and acted as good palate cleansers. The larb and crispy rice were also light but the flavors had a lot of depth. You can also tell that the meat was high quality cause nothing had a smell. It was an amazing dining experience and I can't wait to be back.

Until this year, I never noticed right across the street was Vacancy Brewing and the SXSE Food Co food truck. I took advantage of an Austin Asian Restaurant Passport that benefited a local charity, while also promoting local Asian restaurants. SXSE Food Co was one of the participating restaurants, and I wanted to take the opportunity to try Laotian food. The food was solid, with the flavorful sweet and savory balance similar to Thai and Vietnamese food. The skewers were solid but the crispy fried rice was my favorite dish. It had amazing texture with the crispiness and chewy nature of the sticky rice. There's also freshness from the herbs. The dish overall reminded me of the savory sticky rice with Chinese sausage we make in Cantonese cuisine, and the nostalgia made me love it that much more.

The rice is genuinely crispy, infused with the warm spice of red curry and fragrant herbs like Thai basil, cilantro, and scallions, for a full sensory experience. There's even some coconut for those rich, toasted notes to round it all out. Just be sure to specify vegan because they also have a version with beef. They're parked out at Vacancy Brewing which means you're never too far from an excellent option to soak up that last beer.

The tacos fell apart before I could get them to my piehole and what fell out was mostly tomatos and very little pulled pork 'chunkettes' that were hard to find. Hey. When you walk in, you can place your order at the counter. I ordered the Brussels sprouts salad. I asked for the jalapeños and sauce be on the side since I do not eat spicy hot foods. I wanted to add fried tofu, but the person talking my order said the $7 fried tofu addition was just for the curry and I would have to order the appetizer so I passed since I was just one person. There was plenty of seating in the dining area and they brought the food out when ready. My salad had jalapeños and sauce on it even though I asked for them to be on the side. I was able to remove the jalapeños and it was not that spicy. The salad had fried Brussels sprouts with sweet and spicy sauce, cabbage, basil, cilantro, mint, onion, jalapeño, crispy steamed bao bun. My suggestion would be to replace the bun with a fried tofu option and that would be amazing. It was a very herby and fresh salad with all the fresh herbs. Overall I liked my salad and want to try other items on the menu like the bento box and bowls. Sad to see that this establishment will be closing soon.

My friend who I…read morecame with and I have tried most of the East Asian restaurants in Austin that seem good and are within a reasonable price point, so I really had to do my research to find one that we hadn't been to yet. I had the katsu curry udon, which overall did not have very good of a flavour. My bar is pretty low for chicken katsu and Japanese curry. I am usually easily pleased with these foods, but this was not the case. It wasn't particularly bad however, just mid. My friend got the gyudon bowl, which we both expected to be a bowl of rice with some beef on top, which the picture shows on the online menu. However, it was almost soupy. It was like a pond of beef liquid surrounding a small island of rice. The sogginess was not expected or welcomed. She told me it was good at first, but then the sauce got too salty. I took one bite and felt the strength of the sodium. This is the type of sauce that leaves you dehydrated for the rest of the day. We didn't like the onsen egg either, but we hadn't had one before, so it might just be a flavour we're not used to. This restaurant seems reasonably popular from what I've read online, but it was almost empty when we were there on a Saturday from 6:30-7:30pm. I found that odd. The cocktails on the menu seem good, and they are reasonably priced. I read reviews warning others not to park in the lot right next to the restaurant. The actual parking lot is south of the restaurant and next to a tattoo shop. They have signs posted on the front door to warn customers, but just be extra cautious about it!

My boyfriend and I came here because of the great reviews, but unfortunately our visit was nothing like we expected. From the moment we walked in, the experience was disappointing. The host literally pointed to our table instead of walking us to it, which immediately felt unwelcoming. No one introduced themselves or even told us who our server was, so we never knew anyone's name throughout the entire meal. Throughout our meal, no one checked on us even once, and we had to flag our waiter down multiple times whenever we needed something. Plates and drinks were also repeatedly slammed down on the table, which came across as rude and unprofessional. Every interaction felt rushed, and the staff acted like they were annoyed we were there. The customer service was awful, and it made for a really unpleasant first experience. I thought mint and fruit didn't belong together but this is actually a very nice lychee drink. Brussel Sprouts 5/5 This is what I kept munching on throughout the dinner! It was the best appetizer, came with so much, soft with crispy edges, sweet, salty, and spicy. A little too salty at times but very good overall! Calamari 2/5 This calamari was overly salty?! I tried it without the sauce and the salt was just coming through so much. The sauce was a really yummy sweet thai sauce but genuinely so spicy. Raw Oysters 1/5 For the price, I expected large oysters but they came out with these small, thumb-sized oysters :( They were a bit fishy and grainy, very disappointing! The sauce was good though! Fried Shui Mai 4.5/5 Definitely not shui mai! But very delicious, crispy, and the sauce is great as well. Sauce is also spicy! Green Curry 5/5 This was very delicious! Although a bit salty, the rice balances it out. I like this one because of the basil flavor and how the spice is only a hint. Very creamy, very good! Pad Thai 5/5 This was definitely my favorite!!! It was like an elevated pad thai. Very tart, sweet, delicious, umami, and overall just good. Very nice vibe, great place to take pictures, and the workers were very nice!! Seating is a bit strange.
