I really liked this place. The beef broth pho was really good as were the deep fried eggrolls. The combination of sauces, and toppings for the pho were on point. It was nothing fancy. You just order your food get a number and the food is brought out to your table. The portion sizes are good and you will feel as if you are getting your money's worth. I found it less pretentious than some of the other Asian fusion and pho-inspired places I have been to in Austin, but perhaps not as good as some of the other more down home pho places I am used to in other parts of the country. I think this is a great place to try for a healthy lunch, or if you are a bit new to Vietnamese food and want to try things in a casual atmosphere without breaking the bank. I had come here for dinner and ordered a soup. Excellent food. Only major con I experienced: I had specifically told them that I am a vegan. But they served me fish sauce on the side to add to the soup. And they did not tell me it was fish sauce. I had a friend suspect, and then went up to the checkout counter and asked. Opened by the owners of Pho Saigon and staffed by the same people. Neat Vietnamese concept as its clean and bright unlike most Viet places which are dark and dirty. I think the target market is "white people" rather than Asian people since white people like clean and bright things and don't like yucky (though good) Asian joints. The computer ordering system is gimmicky and quite frankly, I don't get it. They still have cashiers there to help you out...I mean it would probably take LESS time for the cashiers to take your order than for you to jongle with the stupid computer. I always give a place a second chance and that is why I gave it two stars instead of one (as I am hoping my second visit will be a vastly different experience than the one I had recently). We started the evening off with assorted vegetarian egg rolls (fried and served with sweet chili sauce). They also included pickled thinly shaved little pieces of carrot ( a lovely inclusion). Little did I know this would be the highlight of our dining experience. Our entrees (off the specialties section of the menu) included: mi bo vien (beef meatballs, red & green onions and cilantro served with egg noodles in beef broth) and mi ga (chicken, red & green onions and cilantro served with egg noodles in chicken broth). In this case what we got was a poor substitute for Ramen noodles at home out of the microwave, reason being is that it was bland, bland, bland....beef broth and noodles that did not include a seasoning packet. Additionally, I have to mention that I have had meatballs in several cities in a variety of cuisines AND never experienced the Vietnamese meatballs of PhoNatic. They were like chewing on rubber and were not round to boot. I did appreciate the freshness of the vegetables included. These meatballs must be made of all those things I don't venture to eat--lung, tongue, intestines, and various other unnamed parts. I was unable to even get through one bite of the meatballs (that I was hoping would be the highlight of my entree), but left me wanting to run through Taco Bell on the way home!!! All I can say is I was dreadfully disappointed! I am hopeful my next visit will include items not selected the first time and that PhoNatic knocks it out of the park!!! read more

THIS PLACE IS PHO-KING EXCELLENT. This is my favorite Pho place IN THE UNIVERSE. My husband and I frequent this establishment at least 2-3 times per month and we could go even more because the prices are excellent! The food quality is amazingly fresh. My family and I eat here at least once a week, sometimes even two (blush). The food is great. The staff is super friendly. The restaurant is clean and well lit. I love that you can get a small bowl of just broth with a little noodle if you don't a regular or large bowl. I also love the fixings are self serve. I hate having to ask other Pho places for more lime, or cilantro. The only complain about this place is the music. Not sure what satellite station that is but its like always playing Nickleback, 3 Doors Down, Creed, and the likes.YUK! They also have the most delicious Vietnamese (dessert like) beverages. After hearing rave reviews about PhoNatic, I decided to try it as I frequently partake in a wholesome bowl of Bun (egg noodles rather than the rice noodles served in Pho). Boy, what a disappointment. The soup was just okay and meager on the amount of noodles. The basil that accompanied the soup was well past its prime -- black around the edges and dried out. I'd give the soup a questionable 3-1/2 stars. My biggest complaint is the atmosphere of the restaurant. Three TVs going at the same time? Seriously? As well, the noise level was off the Reichter Scale and this was mid-afternoon on a Saturday when the restaurant wasn't even to capacity. There were a couple of large groups but no one was being particularly loud and obnoxious. You can't even hear yourself think and God forbid that you should be with someone and try to converse! You'd have to yell across the table. Not conducive to pleasant experience, IMO. Frankly, I've had better soup at both Sunflower, Van Loc, and Hao-Hao. I'd only eat here again if I was (a) desperate and (b) only if I was doing carry out. Over priced for just okay. read more

The pho I ordered was beef broth and round eye steak. AMAZING!!! So delicious. Also, loved how simple the menu was. We got the tofu spring rolls and the grill with chicken. I'm not a pho girl...just not my thing. Here's the thing about the chicken in the grill which may not be as obvious (??) in the pho: it, at least to our tastebuds, was very much not like chicken. It was not chicken-like in consistency, texture, density, or taste. It was not like any meat I have eaten before. So...it made me a tidge nervous. That being said the spring roll with tofu was good veggies were very fresh and the variety of sauces- fish, sriracha, chile garlic- were great. Its clean and new so that's a plus. They need to turn the AC up a bit tho. I didn't eat pho and I was sweating. My husband was sweating bullets eating his pho. This place is more modern and "do-it-yourself" kind of place. You walk to the counter and order with the person behind the counter or at the kiosk, get your own drinks and condiments. They do bring out your food and clean up after you, so that's good. I do want to try the other dishes. I've only had the grilled pork with rice and its great. Food is good, but I prefer to go to Pho Saigon because I can go to the MT afterwards and get my groceries. There is a Walmart in the same plaza if you shop there. read more

PhoNatic is all about self service- something I appreciate wholeheartedly. I enjoy pho in general but the hit or miss service and absence of fountain drinks at traditional pho places make it hard to enjoy my visits. So I was very happy to find PhoNatic. Been several times so far and the employees we did interact with were cheerful and friendly. I'll be honest, I'm no connoisseur of Pho and for all I know its nowhere near authentic, but what they serve is delicious. The 203 is my favorite bowl: rare beef that simmers to perfection in the broth before your very eyes(none of that gristly junk!), and the 103 is my appetizer of choice: the grilled pork spring rolls. Its hard to stray- I'd love to try more of the menu but that may have to wait until their Cedar Park location opens up nearer to me. read more

I know this place is popular, maybe we were just unlucky tonight. We ordered some Vegetarian Pho and the *cloves* flavor was definitely overwhelming. If you know clove you know it tastes like medecine, dentist paste - unless added with care. I am sure the chef didn't bother tasting this tonight, it was so heavy-handed. Since coming back to Austin after living in Hanoi for 20 months this is the first time I have had food that was somewhat like the real thing. I came here, mostly because my boyfriend was craving pho and tendons. I really liked the whole layout where you order your own food. The portions were so generous and it came out hot and within 10 minutes of ordering. The staff was cool. I'd come back here if I weren't from outta town. I even tried tendons for the first time. Was going to give it a 3-star rating, but the 2-star's "meh. I've experienced better" was much more fitting of my experiences here. Firstly, I just can't get behind the Americanization of their menu. As you'll notice with other pho restaurants, the combination of meats is almost endless (tripe, tendon, brisket, meatballs, raw, cooked, etc.) and you basically customize your bowl. At PhoNatic, they now only offer Pho Tai, Pho Bo Vien, Pho Sach... if you want a Pho Tai, Bo Vien, Sach it'll cost you like $12.00 to "add" the extra meat options. Who's eating their pho with just meatballs? What are we, 9 years old?! I was so annoyed by this I actually went onto their Facebook to write them a memo. While there, I found out that PhoNatic owners also own Pho Saigon, located up N. Lamar in the Chinatown District. So secondly, Pho Saigon and PhoNatic are the same. My first review in Austin, but it had to be done. I am a repeat customer at PhoNatic. As someone who lives close by, PhoNatic is a nice spot for good, hot Pho. However, after picking up my order, I usually rip out the bag to cook the contents from the containers using the hot broth and ask for another bag. I have never had any issues with this request, which has become a sort of an ordeal today. At 7:29PM, I arrived at the Northcross Mall location, and asked for another plastic bag to which "Symphony" gave me a dirty look and proceeded to give me the bag, not before lecturing about how the "Planet is going to hell" in regards to me not reusing the ripped plastic bag. To that, I must say that's just horrible regardless of the customer in question, but even more so to someone who shops at Goodwill and buys used clothes. Anybody who has purchased something new is contributing to the global pollution due to consumerism. To keep it short, her attitude is completely wrong and the fact that that one plastic bag is making the "planet go to hell" is far off base and irrelevant to my experience. I went back at 8:05PM to ask for an apology to which she gave me a dirty look and tried to get another customer to side with her. PhoNatic is a good, fast option for Vietnamese in an area west of most of the other spots. The pork bun and tofu bun are both awesome, fresh, and tasty. The shrimp, not so much. They tasted like they had been steamed or boiled instead of grilled. The Bahn Mi buns are fantastic. As noted, the atmosphere is a little bland, but its clean and bright. I came back here again now that they've been open for a few months. I tried their Pork Vermicelli this time and it was delicious! The portion was large and the pork pieces were large and flavorful. I totally enjoyed my dinning experience! Everything I mentioned in my original review still stands, except that the Pho that my fiance got this time was not soggy. It's like a vietnamese Pei Wei! The concept was cute but the food was forgettable. Boyfriend ordered a wonton and noodle soup. He wanted more wontons and less noodles but he liked it nonetheless. I ordered the fried tofu with rice. The tofu was firm and fried crispy. The fish sauce is much lighter than what I'm used to at home. My dish came with a side of beef broth. I was in Austin just playing around one day and started getting hungry. I wasn't super familiar with the area I was at so I used Yelp to help me find a place. It was a cold evening and I was craving a nice hot bowl of Pho. After reviewing a few places on Yelp I decided on PhoNatic. How could I resist with a name like that! My Pho was everything I wanted and expected it to be. One of the the things that I really liked about PhoNatic is that it was really clean. Don't get me wrong I'm all about the hole in the walls but sometimes it's nice to eat your favorite foods in a nice clean place. They have a nice modern look to the place and it's very welcoming especially for those folks that want try out new foods but may not necessarily want to venture to those authentic hole in the walls. Tried this place recently (twice actually). The vermicelli noodle dishes were GREAT- huge portions and very filling (enough for dinner later :) ). The pho is good too, not the best, but good. (I actually think photaison across the street has yummier broth). I definitely like this place a lot and will go again. The ingredients were all high quality and fresh. The people working there friendly, and I agree the bar on the side with condiments is great, I usually grab extra green onions for my meal. :) Prices were also fair as compared with others. read more

The best way to describe this place is standard Vietnamese fare for white people. The set up, the service and the cool condiment bar caters to the western diner.
