This is the beginning of my taro-filled weekend.... Friday: After having some yummy Hainan chicken at Savoy, my friends and I walked over here. I ordered the taro pudding and also got a coconut mango mochi roll that fellow Yelper Pauline L. recommended. The taro pudding was soooo good! I got home to find that the mochi roll was all gone...boo...hoo Sunday: So I'm in the area for the third time! Located right next to Phonenix Restaurant, street parking available (bit limited). I have been to this particular location many, many times when this place first opened, early 2000's (yea, I'm old). But never got around to reviewing this place. But decided to stop by here after dinner tonight after devouring a plate of Hainan chicken at Savoy (just across the street, short walk so you can stop by here for dessert afterwards). My husband and 2 of our friends ended up getting: Green Mochi Ball with Sesame Filling, $3.50 prior to tax- Chewy consistency with a sweet sesame paste filling. Tasty and a great choice for black sesame lovers like myself. This comes with 4 large pieces. One piece is pretty filling. Sesame Pudding, $2.95 prior to tax- I love Phoenix's puddings. They make them from scratch and come in a variety of flavors. I am a big fan of black sesame and thought the flavor of the black sesame in this pudding was spot on. It wasn't too sweet and didn't taste artificial. Also consistency flavor from 5+ years ago. Durian Pudding, $3.50 prior to tax- My husband opted for this pudding. The smell was rather pungent so I didn't have any (I find durian to be rather repulsive). My husband enjoyed his pudding though... but if you are with people that are rather sensitive to smell, please do everyone a favor and eat this at home or in your car when you are alone or with others who do like durian. ------------------------- (Total= $10.85 after tax) Price in general for their desserts is affordable. This place offers cookies, little mini tarts, cake, milk fruit drinks (love all the cut up fruit in them), puddings and other desserts. If you have a sweet tooth like me, I highly recommend that you come here. I've been here several occasions and absolutely love it. The small shop offers a wonderful selection of warm and cold Hong Kong style desserts like mochi, rolls, rice puddings and custards. Refreshing tapioca mixed with tropical fruits and delightful pastries are on hand as well. While they do offer actual meals (also available at their restaurant next door), desserts seem to be their popular commodity of choice. I usually tend to shy away from glutinous type treats, but their black sticky rice with young coconut was fabulous. I think this is attributed to the fact as it was served hot, not overly sweet and the warmth of the rice was quite comforting to the soul. The perfect companion during cold winter nights or whenever you're in the mood for something yummy. Their sesame ice cream with silken tofu and tapioca pearls was amazing. Unlike the Filipino version which is sweeter and served warm. Theirs was served cold and floating in milk. The subtle flavors of the silken tofu and tapioca was lovely, complimenting richness of sesame ice cream. Mochi was another notable treat that I ordered and devoured without no hesitation. Both the mango and taro were quite yummy. The sweet pasty like rice cake was chewy, sticky and filling was on point. It went well with the mixed fruit tapioca drink that I ordered with it. Asian desserts are da bestttt. :3 Located on the busy street of E Valley Blvd in Alhambra, I believe I passed by the small parking lot but thankfully found street parking right in front of store as it was a weekday afternoon. Desserts I've tried from favorite to least favorite: (1) Black sticky rice with coconut milk (5/5 stars): This is my favorite!! I love the consistency of the black sticky rice - just as the name suggests, slightly sticky and flavor is really good. Hard to explain, so you have to try it for yourself! The coconut milk is the perfect compliment, making it slightly less sweet. Comes out as a warm dessert, but tastes just as good cold. (2) Mango coconut roll (4/5 stars)l: I was uncertain about whether I liked it on my first bite. But as I worked my way towards the center, it was obvious I loved it. Reason being, the sides have more coconut flavor and the main center part has more mango flavor. They use fresh, square pieces of sweet mangos! So delicious and I love the texture (coconut makes it a bit coarse, but the smoothness of the mango evens it out). (3) Durian roll (1/5 stars): FAIL. Let me explain - I've never had durian in my life before. But based on all the reviews raving about it, I had to try this durian roll... and the first thought that flashed across my mind as I bit into it was, "It tastes like trash can." Obviously, after a few minutes, I can re-word my subconscious thoughts into this: It is most definitely an ACQUIRED taste. Just as stinky tofu is (although, I LOVE stinky tofu). It had a pungent smell and very strong aftertaste that left me seeking for a chaser. So my advice is, if you haven't had durian before, don't make the same mistake as me and waste your precious $5 on this durian roll; try the actual durian fruit first and let that be the deciding factor. Pricing: I spent around $14 total for the above 3 desserts. Not that cheap in my opinion, but it's not breaking my wallet either. They accept credit card for purchases over $10. Service: Really good! The lady working at the cashier was super nice and even offered me a sample of their black sesame hot dessert. My friend wanted some Hong Kong Tea. I did a quick Yelp search and Phoenix Dessert pops up with high ratings. So glad I found this place. All kinds of dessert and drinks, including Hong Kong tea. Never had it before, but I will definitely have it again. The staff is really nice and they have a few places to sit. Seems that most people take theirs to go. This is a dessert place in the SGV area that most Asians frequent. They have many dessert options as well as food choices to fill your hungry tummies. I like this dessert called tong yuen. It's mochi balls that are filled with sesame or peanut butter in a ginger soup that is refreshing. I also like their cold chicken and tomato beef fried noodles. They have a variety of hot and cold drinks but I don't really care for them myself. I often come to Phoenix Dessert after dinner or late at night just to grab me some of their Durian Mochi Rolls! I love durian. Some people say it stinks or it tastes bad but hey, it smells sweet to me and it tastes delicious to me as well! If you're like me and you're on vacation, you can buy several and ask them for ice. They will bag up some ice for you to keep the mochi rolls chilled! We've also tried their mango mochi rolls and they were okay. They weren't as good as the durian but that was probably because the mango wasn't as ripe. I would often get their herbal jelly with the syrup. The herbal jelly is suppose to help cleanse your body of "hot air." Since I eat a lot of fried foods or junk foods, my body naturally has a lot of "hot air" hahahaha! They have plenty of other Chinese desserts which is really cool. We don't really have a good Chinese dessert place in Vegas so when we want some, we'll eventually get it here at Phoenix when we are on vacation! The prices of everything aren't too bad either. Dropped by and got the purple yam durian roll to go! Honestly not a fan of durian but tried it anyways and brought it back home to share with family. The durian lovers absolutely loved it! My mom and aunt who grew up in Malaysia eating treats like this thought it was amazing. I thought it was alright but I'd say it's because I don't appreciate durians. Really, really soft and chewy. Cons: Use MSG Food: Cold chicken plate: One of the favorites here. It's definitely cold with a lot of sesame oil taste. The chicken wasn't dry but it was omg juicy. The steamed rice is cooked in garlic chicken broth making it tasty but a tad too overcooked for me. The sour veg I thought complimented the cold chicken very well. I like the after taste of sourness that it leaves and the lingering stench. Garlic & pepper wings: freshly fried fresh wing goosed in stir fry garlic and jalapeños so of course it was amazingly delicious. The wings did tasted like it was lightly flavored. I saw and found traces of MSG but didn't give a dam. Singaporean noodles ~ Laska noodles Soup: Coconut broth noodles soup- it tasted like a dish from my country but with no prohok. There's chicken and shrimp as the protein. The chicken tasted dry (old or overcooked) but the shrimp was good. I sorta like this dish. The tasty broth is what makes it since everything else was mediocre. Didn't taste authentic but now I'm eager to try a place that's known for laska noodles soup. Durian Dessert: PUNGENT but it's durian folks. Eat it chilled and It's bomb. If you like durian you must get this but other flavors are offered. We recently tried their mango pomelo sago with silken tofu, along with some of the egg tarts. While their egg tarts are just okay, the mango pomelo sago with silken tofu dessert was delicious and perfect for a hot summer day. Previously, we had tried this at SweetHoney Dessert, which is a newer dessert restaurant from Hong Kong. While Phoenix has been around much longer than SweetHoney Dessert, we had never tried it there and ended up kicking ourselves in the butt a little for not trying it sooner, as it was better here and had been here the whole time. The dessert essentially tastes like a sweet mango soup. I'm not sure that the pomelo, sago or silken tofu add much to the dessert at either restaurant. The version at Phoenix seems to taste more of mango, which is why we prefer it ever so slightly over the one at SweetHoney. On a subsequent trip, we tried the silken tofu dessert which is served with a ginger inflected syrup. It was surprisingly simple and hit the spot on a hot day, as it was served cold. While the flavors might be muted for the Western palate, if you've grown up eating this at a dim sum place, then the comforting flavors will be readily familiar you. read more

Next time got to try the boba or more solid desserts. They even have a sit down next door for food. Shop is small in size and they prefer cash. Discovered this spot thru Yelp, while visiting Socal last week and this quickly became my favorite go to place in Alhambra...I went back 4 nights in a row! I LOVE how they are open super late (1AM). Their sidewalk seating is perfect for warm summer nights. (If you are a fan of Creations in SF like I am...this place is like Creations plus 10X the creativity!) I don't do Durian but says Mom says that she still reminisces in that love at first bite of Durian Mochi goodness. I opted for the Mango Mochi...and although the Mango was a tiny bit tart, the soft, chewy mochi dusted in coconut all made up for it. My favorite item here is the Coconut Gelatin with Black Sticky Rice sandwiched in the middle. It's not a super sweet dessert and I love that sticky rice in the middle that offsets the soft gelatin. Simple, brilliant combination! The only item that I did NOT like here were the baked coconut mochi things in a box on the counter. The ladies that work the counter are friendly and efficient. I heart their sago/tapioca drinks here, especially the mixed melon (watermelon + honey dew)!! This is the perfect spot to hit up during a hot summer night when you are craving some Asian sweets. The egg tarts, mochi, pudding, and hot desserts are also very delicious. I like how they have a variety of flavors tailored to both the younger and older generation. The cousins and I generally go for the green tea and fruit flavors while the "adults" stick to their traditional red bean, taro, or even durian. Unfortunately, I'm allergic to mango so I cannot tell you how yummy their mango pudding or mango mochi are, but from the expressions on my hubby's and family's faces, anything mango there is usually a crowd pleaser. It's a good thing I see Phoenix popping up everywhere, I can find them all over SGV and Arcadia area these days, yay! I came here because the hours and location were convenient, and we just wanted dessert... but I was disappointed with what I ordered :\ I'm not sure what they were called, maybe custards or flans. After looking at the window display, I got a sampler which had four varieties. That was a mistake because the flavors are random... Two of the flavors were similar, the green tea flavor was too bitter to my taste, the texture was jello-like and I expected something softer and smoother... and overall it was more bitter than sweet. I should've just picked one flavor rather than leave my taste buds' fate up to the phoenix staff. But actually, I will probably never get the jello thing again. But it is also very expensive after the new parking with two rolls per packing only. Same price, but one less roll! So it is a 50% price increase! The other desserts and drinks just average compared to another desserts restaurant. Services is not good as most of the Asia restaurants! You will not feel like they're welcome your business! They will do their job, no more! Finding a parking is very hard most of the time for this location. Street parking only. So it is tests your luck every time! Today was my first visit here. There's a bakery located next by the restaurant. We ordered two dishes for dinner (steamed tofu mixed seafood plate and a chow fun plate). The portions were huge and so tasty! We didn't even need rice to go with them. After dinner, we ordered some desserts: durian with sticky rice and coconut milk, durian rolls, some cubed pudding, and a mixed fruit tapioca drink. The sticky rice with the durian was delicious! Customer service was awesome! Everyone was nice and friendly. I would definitely come back here again. It took me about 55 mins one way to commute here but...I wouldn't mind ;). After a friend brought me a mango roll, I was hooked. I knew I had to visit Phoenix Dessert on my next trip to LA no matter what. I bought 2 orders of mango rolls ($5.50 each) and 1 order of durian rolls ($6.50). The rolls are coated in coconut flakes. The mango rolls were semi-sweet. The durian was quite pungent but delicious. My entire car and then refrigerator smelled like the fruit for a few days. The rolls are good for 2 - 3 days in the refrigerator. Any longer than that and the rolls get hard. Since the rolls are semi-sweet, they make a great dessert that can be enjoyed by those with and without a sweet tooth. read more

My favorite dessert joint after Savoy Hainan chicken (sorry, forgot to check-in and take pics for that review) and conveniently only a 30 second walk across the street! Had durian the last couple of times, so wanted to try something different...flan with caramel and black jelly. Topped off with small tapioca and milk, this dessert is a nice relief from the hot November weather (where did fall go?). Never crowded, and has nice window bar/outdoor seating with a view of the hustle and bustle of Valley Blvd. Can't go wrong with this OG establishment! read more

My recent L.A trip was a very short one, there are just so many places we wanted to try. We ended up visiting 10 different foodie spots in a day (wouldn't recommend doing this, lol), and Phoenix Dessert is def. the place that in my opinion, worth that extra tummy room. Walking into this tiny shop, I was immediately drawn to their Durian mochi rolls. Prices at $5.95 for 3 (cut in half), it was relatively affordable Durian indulgence. Each roll has generous amount of real durian meat, which tasted creamy, fluffy, smooth and they smell incredibly potent!! Overall, if you are an avid Durian lover, you're going to love this place. Location is few steps away from Savoy Kitchen and parking was somewhat a pain. Phoenix Dessert served other confectioneries such as puddings, milky durian drinks, mochis, etc... Ahh worth the drive... The minute you start craving the traditional version of Chinese goodies, gotta make a trip to Alhambra/ San Gabriel valley. This joint is next to the Phoenix restaurant which looked a potential place to have lunch next time :) as it was crowded and busy. You finish lunch and you go next door to this little space with limitless array of Chinese dessert choices. Egg custard tart, mango pudding, tiramisu Chinese style :) and the mighty durian rolls . Service is always great at this particular Phoenix. When we visit we always pay a visit to enjoy our desserts. I like coming here because of all the durian selection desserts they have. It's like durian heaven. We have been coming to Phoenix for years, and my kids have adapted to making a pit stop everytime we are in LA. We always have our favorites here. I asked them for an extra cup. The cashier said "We have no cup." I was like you don't have A cup at all? Even drinking cup not plastic, or to go cup. The answer I got is "Cup to go is a dollor." So they do have cups, just not so willing to offer to customer. So in the end I got a water drinking cup, the clear plastic one at no charge. And I asked for additional spoon, a plastic one is totally fine. The other lady ignored me until we asked the third times did they give us a plastic spoon. I know phoenix is a chain store around the area, an extra plastic spoon and cup to share with a drink and a dessert is ridiculously unreasonably, extremely unwelcoming, and difficultly hard. 1 star is more than enough for such great customer service. Pick up the menu first or you might be overwhelmed by all the Chinese desserts they have in plain sight. They have many flavors of custards (some are cube shaped), fresh mochi (different flavors, most are rolled in coconut), puddings, cakes, cookies, macarons, sweet tofu desserts, shaved ice, cheesecake, dessert soups, tarts, many drinks...and then they also have savory little cold appetizers. The cube shaped cold custards looked appealing and unusual. They came in flavors like mango, taro, black sesame, almond, kabocha and coconut milk. * Black sticky rice and red bean custard cubes ($2.95): Comes with three tall cubes of custard. The dessert is like a firm, creamy gelatin. It's made with gelatin, coconut milk, red beans, condensed milk, sugar, cream and black rice. The coconut and red bean flavors are subtle. It's not too sweet. The red bean and rice pieces are pureed and add a little texture and flavor. It's an interesting, fairly light dessert/treat. The shop is small, clean and new looking. Seating is limited. It's right next to their Phoenix Inn restaurant. There's a window on the wall that separates the two so you can probably go there and order desserts and drinks when you're at Phoenix Inn? read more

This place puts Asian dessert places in the SF Bay Area to shame! My favorite, the fresh mango and soy custard dish has a good amount of love and happiness called condensed milk and tapioca. It was so good that we EACH ordered more to-go for a later-night snack. Their warm fresh custard with ginger syrup reminds me of breakfast goodness from back home. TAHO! Taro and black sticky rice in coconut milk was also a hit. But just lacked the black rice. Service is quick. The only thing that will take time is making your final dessert decision, from a long menu of refreshing drinks to hot dessert soups. But don't worry, they're open till 1 am anyways. What's not to like here? I haven't had anything I don't like. Phoenix Food Boutique sells hot dessert, cold dessert, asian dessert, asian pudding, western pastry, cakes, shaved ice, steamed desert & drinks. Some of my favorites: black sticky rice with young coconut (hot dessert) and asian puddings (fresh mango, green tea & red bean and coconut milk & taro). Chinese pudding is not the same as American pudding, it's like jello but not as jiggly. The texture is more like gelatin agar. I also like their mixed fruit tapioca drink (coconut milk with mixed fruits). Yesterday I got honey kumquat drink and I liked it. It tasted weird at first because it didn't taste like kumquat. It tasted more like orange peel drink with honey; a little bitter, sweet and sour. After a while it's actually pretty good. The mochi..almost forgot about that..not your typical Japanese mochi. This chinese mochi comes in 4 different flavors: fresh mango, black sticky rice, green tea sesame and strawberry & peanut. I always get the mango and it's not bad. The price is very cheap; most of the items are below $4.00. Go to Savoy across the street or Phoenix Chinese Cuisine next door and get your dessert here. I came here on a random Saturday afternoon after an extended workout and I enjoyed my meal so much that I came back two times in two weeks. A lot of places with Chinese food from hong kong tastes really similar. But I feel that Phoenix prepares everything pretty solidly and consistently. All their dishes are family style and you get a lot of food here. I really enjoy their House Special Rice Noodles and their Braised String Beans. Although their Chinese food is dependable and consistent, what makes this place special is its wonderful selection of desserts. I love their mochi....it is fresh, chewy, and tender and filled with fresh ingredients. The mango mochi, for example, has a nice mango cube in the center of the mochi. Their Mango Tapioca is probably their most popular drink and its easy to see why. They give you a coconut milk filled with the most delicious mini boba (tapioca balls) I've ever had. And then they add plenty of mango cubes into the drink. It's a pretty filling dessert drink and its has a ton of flavor. If you love mango and coconut, this is a must have. Their tarts are pretty delicious. They're just really well made and very flavorful. They offer a few hot desserts. I tried a little bit of their hot black sesame puree and I thought it was delicious. My only problem was that the sesame flavor was so strong that I got tired of it after eating a quarter of the cup. There are a lot of interesting items on their menu and this chain is worth checking out if you're searching for a place with (A) dependable cantonese food or (B) great cantonese desserts. read more
