Phoenix dessert has a huge selection of Chinese desserts like fruit mochi, puddings and dessert soups. It was easy to find street parking coming here on Saturday evening. The dessert shop doesn't have its own seating but it's connected to their main restaurant and you're welcome to order it for dine in on the restaurant side. We were greeted by really friendly aunties as we stepped in, they were really excited to introduce us to various different menu items they had. They encouraged us to try the mango desserts since it's in season right now, so we got a large mango mochi and a mango and grapefruit pudding. The mango mochi was absolutely delicious, the mango was really juicy and sweet and the layer of mochi was soft and chewy. There was some cream in there but it didn't add much to it. The mango and grapefruit pudding was tasty as well. The mango pudding had good flavour that wasn't too sweet and the texture paired well with the chunks of mango and grapefruit. In my opinion the portions of the dessert are a bit small for the price. Overall a great no frill dessert place, would definitely come back to try their other desserts! read more

Came by for a mid-afternoon snack the other day and it was a decent experience. Phoenix Dessert is connected to the Phoenix restaurant next door. Both had extremely weak air conditioning, if any. Parking was available on the street. There were a couple tables outdoors under the awning for consuming desserts on premise. The dessert shop featured a variety of Chinese desserts, focusing on mangoes. The pomelo sago and mango pudding were decent, although I've had much better versions out in Singapore. This sweet spot is connected to Phoenix restaurant, but it has its own entrance, which is connected to the restaurant from the inside. When we arrived, the ladies behind the counter, were so warm and friendly in greeting us. They answered any questions about any of the mochi that they had. We tried the fresh mango mochi and it was one of the most tender melt in your mouth I had. I just wish it was mango season because the mango itself was fibrous, but that's just what you get for wanting a tropical fruit in North America in the winter. We also tried the passionfruit custard which is three different layers of a jelly/custard. It smelled delicious but the flavor itself in two of the layers was a little bit more muted than the top layer. This place used to be one of my favorite dessert spots since I was in Hs, and still be the best place for Durian Rolls, stopped by again after the several years of Covid, surprisingly they made new type of Durian Rolls, one is the regular Thai Durian, and another one is Musang King durian is generally considered expensive, and often more so than other durian varieties, which is from Malaysia. Great service, luckily, there is a 30% off for Musang Durian Rolls today, I'm not hesitant to grab 3 orders of them. Great choice, the durian texture is very creamy w/ rich flavors. I believe it was about $7/ 2 rolls, which is a bit pricey. Durian Rolls 2/10: I wish there was more durian flavor! I was looking for it the entire time i ate the roll, by the time i finished it, i realized i didn't find any creamy pockets of durian. The cream inside is very lightly durian scented, but the flavor just wasn't there. I just felt like I was eating a squishy, wet, mochi. Assorted Mochi 2/10: Somehow, had the same problem as the durian rolls. I had high hopes for this as well, but at the end of the day, the mochis were just sweet globs of sugar, lacking any distinct flavor. Even the mango chunk in the mochi felt like it lacked flavor. I've been coming here for years mainly for their mango pomelo sago with silken tofu. Unfortunately the quality has gone down over the years. Today I ordered one and it didn't have any sago. The mango pieces were also very tiny and mushy. The pomelo were also tiny shredded pieces. Before, they used to put bigger chunks of mango and pomelo. Inflation has really changed a lot. Egg tarts- cute and mini but just okay Mango rolls- was my thing to get here. Now it's been years since I've had a mango roll because there isn't one close to me anymore. These are fresh cut mango, mango cream, wrapped in a mochi and covered in coconut flakes. 2 rolls for $6 and some change. Before they were 3 rolls for $4 and some change, same size. And the mango had fibers. It's either their mango type or they are cutting too close to the seed. Beware!!!! It has been a while since I had durian rolls @Phoenix. I decided to drop by to get a box. My friend went inside to order. When she came out, I thought it was strange how the rolls were cut in half. Also, the date sticker or price was ripped off. I really just thought maybe the price changed, so they ripped it off. I decided to try it before I leave. Luckily, I stayed because the durian rolls weren't fresh. The outside layer was gooey and a bit rough/hard than usual. The durian wasn't that bad, but I can tell it wasn't fresh. My friend went back in to show them the gooey part and let them know that something was wrong with the rolls. Without any hesitation, they exchanged it. Look at the photos for comparison. Just know that the fresh ones will always be a full piece and not cut in half. So the reason for the two stars is that it's a hit or a miss and I've had repeated miss in terms of the freshness of the product. When they give you fresh product, it's 5 stars, however, they tend to give you old stuff to try to get rid of inventory and anyone who has had old rice knows that it's not the right texture. I don't get it because they have a self service fridge that is discounted because it's older stuff but I don't get the items in that fridge. I ask for the fresh stuff and the last two visits, they've given older stuff where the mochi texture is just hard. On my latest visit I even specifically said please give me fresh ones and the person behind the counter swapped one of my items out. When I went home and ate them about an hour later, two out of three mochi rolls were fresh and soft but one was very noticeably old and the texture was off. Not going to go back to this store anymore because it's like playing roulette, and if I wanted to gamble, I'd go to Vegas. read more

Phoenix Dessert is a takeout dessert shop located next to the Phoenix Inn which serves Cantonese cuisine (food looked better than dessert). It's so old school that there's a small glass window used to pass desserts (most are pre-made and likely produced off premises such as "Mochi" and "Rolls") from the dessert shop to the Inn side of the adjacent establishments. The "Inn" side provides sit down ordering and dining for both meals and dessert. The decor for both dessert and inn reminds you of something from the 60's, no flash, no glam, just give me the dang food. Tables on the inn side were very spread out and disinfected after being occupied (saw the spraying and wipe down). Employees were masked and diners were required to wear masks to enter both establishments per signage. Asian desserts has been a more recent trend and modern dessert shops have popped up all over SoCal. Most are new, staffed by hip young people with modern Chinese, Taiwanese or KPOP music in the background. Don't expect that here. Expect Frank Sinatra, no, let me correct that, expect Don Ho, to shuffle in here looking for old style food and dessert. No glam. Just dessert in paper or plastic containers with plastic utensils and flimsy brown napkins (gave us two napkins for five people). How does that happen?? We ordered assorted "Fresh" Mochi: - Mango which had a large mango chunk in the center, - green tea, - red bean, - bobalite milk tea, - black sesame), that were all pre-packaged and cold from refrigeration. So don't expect "Fresh" per menu, expect just cold Mochi balls manufactured from an offsite location. A bit deceiving.... As for other desserts, their "Steamed" desserts were also pre-made and served in paper containers "cold". So I guess "Steamed" is the process in which it was made but they serve it to you cold from their refrigerator. How does that work? It doesn't for me. Didn't order the Steamed Ginger Milk upon the waitress telling me it was cold....pass on that. From the cold "Freshly Made" and "Warm Soup" menu sections we ordered: - Silken Tofu with Mango (probably the best of what we ordered) - Black Stick Rice with Mango (average) - Warm Black Sesame Soup (likely from a powder and was pretty smooth) - Fresh Mango Shaved Ice (ice actually grounded, not really shaved, this dessert was actually made on premises, don't expect flaky thin melt in your mouth Hawaiian Shaved Ice, but expect small chunks of ice which dentists tell you not to chew on) All of the items were served in paper or plastic containers and obtained from their take-out Phoenix Dessert shop. However, the Black Sesame Soup came from the restaurant side as it was served warm. Conclusion: The desserts basically satisfy your sweet tooth craving with the understanding that the menu is written in mostly fiction - Steamed, Fresh, Hand-Crafted but likely from somewhere else. The thing I like about Phoenix is all the different flavors can be made into a handful of different dessert items. Honestly, I came only for the durian rolls - thinly wrapped in a mochi skin. Then I came across a handful of other items. I got a Hong Kong milk tea - strong and milky. The durian pudding was good, the top layer was more potent than the 2nd half. The black sesame pudding was really good! - bummed they only had 1 left. My friends got a couple of the homemade bottled teas, one was a bittermelon tea which wasn't bad at all. The mango mochi was so soft and had a fresh piece of mango inside of it. The freshness of the fruit balanced well with the chewiness and sweetness of the mochi. We also ordered some of the mango jello and it was very refreshing. This place is perfect to stop in for a quick treat that isn't too heavy.
