Pho Basil is exactly what you'd expect from its title alone: half Vietnamese, half Thai.
Service:
Not extraordinary nor remarkable. They weren't rude, they weren't over the top saccharine. They left you alone unless you waved them over. They did their job & were cordial. Whether it's vacant or crowded, they're not too attentive with water refills or making sure everything is okay. They appear when needed: drinks, orders, plating, removing plates, bill, collection, done.
Prices:
Fair! Lunch specials are great. Get the combo for $2 extra & you'll still be under $13 including tax & tip! (Given that you don't order seafood or an additional appetizer.) I'm used to seeing pho priced around $5.50 to $7.50 in Little Saigon (California), so the pho here is a few bucks more. Overall, I don't think anything is too outrageous.
Food:
Been here twice & I may make another trip to really finalize my decision of 3 stars, but man, disappointment. The first time I came here, I got the Pho Chay. It's not terrible, it's just not good. Flavorless, lacks the aroma of pho, just.. isn't very creative. You guys need to step up your Pho Chay game. Give me more fennel, cinnamon, star anise, ginger, onion, etc in my soup! All I taste is vegetable broth with pho noodles & some random vegetable toppings. The best way for them to improve this pho is to add some properly seasoned seitan, white wood ear (emulates the fat from pho bo), & maybe some bean curd sheets. Don't just toss any vegetable in there, pretend you're a vegetarian & you want to experience the wonders of pho. Do pho justice. Get the flavor profile down.
I also had the drunken noodles & asked them to make it the spiciest (they have 4 levels). It was more mild than Sriracha & they ran out of the wide flat rice noodles, which was disappointing. The flavor was okay. I want to say I'm making bad menu decisions, except if it's on the menu, it should be good. The combo lunch with 2 vegetable triangles, gyoza, soup, & salad were delightful though. I enjoyed that more than the main dish. Sigh, I'll be back to try another Vietnamese dish because that's comfort food I miss from home, but I probably won't be happy.
The vegetarian egg rolls are a let down too. Not very good, but not terrible. Edible, enjoyable, but not, "damn those egg rolls are delicious. I can't believe it's not meat!" good.
Environment:
Restaurant is on the smaller side & can get really crowded at night. There's sort of a bar in the back. It's nicely decorated, nothing too cheesy or outlandish.
I don't recommend Pho Basil, but it has potential to improve. I'm disappointed that Yelp's ranking for this place tricked me into thinking it would be really good. I want to like it because it's so close to me, but I can't.
tl;dr Vietnamese American, grew up near the 2nd & 3rd most populated Vietnamese cities in the US outside of Vietnam; standards pretty high. Pho Chay not accurate. Much disappoint. read more
