Food is back to decent and service is back to decent. A pretty good Thai Food place in downtown Boston.
Everything was absolutely delicious. Atmosphere was good with the exception of the next table which was louder than a normal crowd. Food came out hot! Good portions as well.
It's not a burger or pizza and a beer, but this is my go-to spot for dinner before a game or concert at the Garden, even though it's not quite in proximity to the arena. This is Cha Yen's (of Watertown) sister restaurant, so the menu is quite similar, if not the same. Since I like Cha Yen's green curry, I typically get it here, and it's comparable with the Watertown location. The curry is spicy but not numbing, with a delicately balance sauce that has some savory and a subtle hint of sweet. There's enough vegetable and protein in the curry to feel satisfied. The short rib curry is a little more thicker and robust, and is rather like a hearty stew. The meat falls off the bone and is also pretty flavorful. Service is fine, though nothing amazing. The place is small, so expect a wait, especially if you have a larger group.
The service was amazing! Seriously was craving some Thai food, and this was the best I've had in a while! Coming from Southern California, that's saying a lot! Will definitely come back when I'm in the area again!
So crowded on a late Thursday night, one hour before closing. Seated a few minutes after we checked in. We wanted to start with the Beef Larb, but they were out. Settled for Steamed Kapow Dumplings and Cheesy Shrimp Rolls. We couldn't wrap our heads around mixing mozzarella and shrimp, but these were so good. We equally enjoyed the dumplings. For entrees, we had Pla Pad Ped (spicy crispy cod w vegetables), Spicy Noodle Soup, and Cashew Nut Stirfry. Every item was delicious. Another return spot to enjoy when we're in Boston.
Very good food! It was high quality and delicious. Our server was very kind and friendly. The only cons I would have for this place are the limited space and the lukewarm water.
Some of the best thai food ive had! The service is do quick! Even if there was a wait outside we were able to get seated pretty quickly. They took our orders in line and got our food as soon as we got our seat. It is a smaller area but it had a lot of seating available and so cozy!
I came here while visiting Boston for work. I was looking for a quick lunch spot. Overall the experience was good. It was fairly busy during lunch. It seemed like a popular place for tourists and locals as well (this may have been because a farmer's market was open right next door). Good vibe overall. The service was good -- nothing amazing/negative to report on. I did appreciate how the menu highlighted what was vegetarian and what was not. The food was pretty good. Not the best Thai food I've had. The tofu soup was good. Tasted a bit like miso soup. The Basil fried rice was also good, but I think it could have used a bit more flavor. I would come back again to try other things on the menu!
This is a cute thai eatery with good quality food with pretty affordable prices. The curries and noodles here are consistently good, would definitely recommend the pad kee Mao and Panang curry. The tom yum soup is a little thin and bland. The service is a little slow, I think there's not enough wait staff. The tables are quite small so only come with a small group. Each dish is less than $17-21 which is pretty good for the area. The portion sizes aren't the largest but I think the food is filling enough. They're currently out of their dessert/ice cream.
Service was amazing. Waited 10 minutes to be seated. Walk in no reservations. Food really good. The kitchen is an open concept and because of that the fumes might affect you and you might start coughing a lot. But overall place was amazing.
Surprisingly solid Thai spot right next to Haymarket. The place has been busy both times I've come so be prepared to potentially wait for a seat! It seems like a popular takeout spot as well if you're willing to do that too. The menu has a decent selection of apps and entrees at reasonable prices. Food comes out pretty fast and service is quick - the server is very fast-paced and more down to business so don't expect a super friendly vibe. The food was solid - filling and flavorful. I recently went again after my first trip and honestly that was a bit more disappointing, I'd say stick to regular noodle and curry dishes since the duck was really small and the cheese shrimp rolls were not great. Overall, I enjoyed my meals and wouldn't mind coming back if in the area again. Their classic Thai dishes are definitely the stars and their drinks are also very solid - Thai tea was great!
Looking for a solid place that understands flavor and consistently executes delicious Thai food? Look no further! From the fried rice to the curries and appetizers, the food is consistently fresh. Seating is limited (about 25-35 seats), but their service is quick, and they welcome adjustments to spice level. Parking is tough in the North End, so take the MBTA to Haymarket. Ambience: clean, no frills, low level music which is great for conversation. Definitely tricky for parties of 6+ read more
Kala Thai cookery is exactly what I needed after a long travel day from Seattle. It's a small yet bustling on the corner of Blackstone and Hanover streets. The restaurant is clean and bright, the service is great and the food is even better. The prices seem reasonable for this area. I'm here for a few days I'll be back! read more

Got the pad Thai with shrimp and corn cake. Pad Thai is slightly sour. It'll be better if it's less sour. The rice noodle is pretty thin and it's easy to break. The shrimp is pretty fresh. The corn cake smells good when it first came out. It definitely tastes better when it's hot. When it's cold, it's better to eat with the sauce. In general, the portion is big and it's not that expensive. They are popular the night after Christmas. There's a small line to dine in. read more

Walking around the hotel to check out the restaurants around Faneuil Hall. Been eating Italian and seafood dishes and was looking for something different when I saw a line outside Kala Thai Cookery. I take it as a good sign whenever there is a line and they did not disappoint. It took 20 minutes to get seated. They were taking orders just before going in. Guess that's being efficient. Started with the fried tofu. Coated with light crispy batter on the outside and soft on the inside. Word of caution... it came smoking hot literally. For my main, ordered the Kapow (3 sign) with ground pork. It was delicious and just right amount of spice. The dinner portion was huge and good for sharing. It's even bigger than portions in Texas! It was a little salty. Should have asked if I can order sunny side up egg with it. Order comes with a side of white rice. Restaurant has a modern and rustic feel. They have table and countertop seatings. Authentic Thai food in downtown Boston. I would come back again when I'm in the area and try their other dishes. Everything looks good from the surrounding tables! read more

Despite eating a full breakfast, then eating after breakfast ice cream, I was told this was the best Thai restaurant in Boston so I made sure to try Kala Thai out. It's easy to miss, so make sure to google maps this place. It's a very small restaurant, kitchen is open concept so it's a modern hole in the wall. The lunch menu was very affordable and expansive. There's a little bit of everything on it. I ordered the Garlic Bok Choy and my friend ordered the Pineapple Curry. Both came with white rice. You can upgrade to brown rice for an extra charge. I absolutely loved how the veggies weren't cooked to mush and that my entree came on a banana leaf. Both were beautifully presented dishes and full of flavor. I'm a huge fan of the fried tofu so already that was a win in my books. Garlic Bok Choy - think fried garlic tossed amongst simple veggies and the star is the bok choy. Aromatic, bold, oily stir fry in the best way. Pineapple Curry - fresh, bright, and tastes like it was cooking for hours with pineapple simmering at the last minute. We beat the crowd and there weren't too many other tables at the time. But I'm told that this place fills up all the time, so don't be surprised. read more

Great spot for a meal with a friend! Food: - Pad Thai: solid portion size, taste and flavor for the price, can't go wrong with this classic - Tom Yum soup: a taller bowl of this soup, had some mushrooms, good for something looking for something warm - Shortrib curry: my friend got this, the presentation and the flavor were amazing! I want to go back and grab this for myself Seating is difficult to come by, if you're lucky and get there when a table opens up, you can get seated and get your food pretty quickly. Otherwise, it is definitely on the smaller side so people have trouble getting a table. Also, the staff is on the smaller side so there's not too much service read more

Thai restaurant with solid food. They don't have much seating inside so you need your full party to be seated. They also try to take your order before seating you to speed up the process. read more

Got a tip about this restaurant from a local and gave it a shot for lunch. My friends and I were all very happy we went. Quaint little hole in the wall with friendly waitstaff. Food was excellent. I started out with the corn cake appetizer. Satisfyingly crispy texture with a delicious dipping sauce. It's deep fried, so it was greasy, but a dish like this can't help but be greasy. Next I got tofu with cashews. High quality tofu and a fresh variety of vegetables. Absolutely delicious sauce. This was my favorite. Finally I tried the tofu pad thai (w/egg). Once again, all ingredients were fresh, high quality and delicious. I liked the copious amounts of fried onion on top. This is an easy recommendation for those that like Thai cuisine. I haven't had Thai this good in a long time. read more

I loved this restaurant so much during my visit to Boston. It was so close to the Boston Public Market and our nearby hotel. It was extremely busy and the seats are kind of close together, but I didn't mind that that much. Staff was attentive enough for how busy the restaurant was. We ordered the papaya salad, short ribs curry and panang curry. We also ordered the sticky rice which comes at an extra charge. They forgot the order of the the sticky rice on the short rib curry and had put regular rice, but they were super apologetic and let us keep the regular rice, and shortly after brought the correct order of sticky rice. We also decided to try their thai tea ice cream and it was okay for me. The ice cream was a bit dense and was more icy than creamy. The flavour was very good though! Otherwise, everything tasted amazing and we ended up coming here twice during our visit! read more
A small Thai spot near the North End area. It's quite busy when we got their. Their food looks great at first but most of them were way too sweet for us...The Cha Kuay Tiew was the only decent one with smokey wok flavorful. Good portion though. The Red Curry had plenty of chicken in it. read more

Service was wonderful. We were able to find a spot within 15 minutes on a Sunday night and the server was quite helpful. The restaurant is really small so it's quite loud in there. Food was wonderful, but beware that it's on the more spicy side. We tried a bunch of dishes. For appetizers we got the chili garlic chicken wings. Sauce was nice. The noodles were a little too salty for our preferences. Portions were on the smaller side so I recommend getting more dishes to feel full. The pad thai was great and the see ew was also good. Kee Mao was pretty spicy but had a lot of flavor. Green curry was spicy and the chicken was a little dry. Otherwise, it had good flavor. This restaurant had a much more reasonable price range compared to the Italian places in the North End in Boston, so it's perfect for college students. There's a mandatory 20% tip for a party of 6. read more
I loved this place two years ago and I still love it! Went for dinner a few days ago and its one of the most amazing thai places in Boston. It was packed, it is a small place, can probably accommodate around 30 people, the seating is too close to each other though. Taste - 10/10 Quality - 10/10 Pricing - 15/10 Quantity - 9/10 Service - 8/10 I got the panang curry with a side of rice and drunken noodles with tofu. Loved both so much! The curry i felt was way less and when asked i was told i could get some extra if i asked for it while ordering, so people remember to ask for extra curry its $1. I was happy to see there were so many veggies. The drunken noodles were great too! Also, food i ordered was VEGAN!! Loved it. Already ordered a takeout again for tonight. read more

This place was so good-- I went with a party of 4 on a Sunday night, and although there was a bit of a wait for a table, we really didn't mind it especially when we got our food. They took our order before we got a table so that the food would come out sooner, which we super appreciated. I got the pad Thai with tofu, the kapow dumplings (they asked if I wanted steamed or fried and I got fried, which meant they were super crunchy and yummy), and the Thai tea lemonade. My friends got the chicken fried rice and the tofu basil fried rice. They really nailed the flavors and textures with everything. I would say my favorite thing was the Thai tea lemonade! It was not too sweet and very refreshing :) a perfect pairing with the heavy food I was eating. A small note, too: they refilled our waters all the time, which just reflected how thoughtful they are. Overall I love this place, the staff couldn't be friendlier or more attentive, and for a busy Sunday night they were so efficient and just wonderful. Obviously Kala is now going to be one of my rotating dinner spots. read more

Good food very close to our hotel so we got take out and had dinner in our room. The coconut soup was great and so were the spring rolls. The pad Thai was classic but my favorite was the Penang curry! Next time I'll ask for more rice though. read more
