I was excited to try Black Ruby on my recent trip to Boston and made a res for noon on a Saturday. Definitely would recommend making a res as there were only bar seats for walk ins when I went. We shared the Tom Yum Shrimp Pasta and Massaman Curry Burger. Both were pretty good but the pasta was delicious. Loved the spicy creamy tom yum inspired sauce that paired well with the fettuccine pasta, shaved parmesan, and tender shrimp. The sauce was really flavorful with a nice spicy kick that was mellowed out with cream. So so good and very addicting. The burger was ok but came out a little lukewarm even though it was sent out super quickly once we ordered. The curry sauce was yummy but the burger itself was a bit dry and bland and the fact that it wasn't hot didn't really help the flavor. I came here for dinner recently and had a lovely time! If you're going around peak dinner times (6-8pm), I highly recommend reservations. Service was really quick and polite. I got their lemongrass shrimp ceviche and their green curry grilled beef rigatoni + their mango sticky rice colada to drink. The shrimp ceviche came out beautifully presented and a good portion. Black Ruby completely exceeded my expectations. The idea of Thai-American fusion with craft burgers and pasta sounded intriguing, but the food was genuinely impressive. Our favorites were the Mussels in Red Curry Rice Wine, Red Curry Bolognese, Massaman Beef Burger, and Mango Sticky Rice. Each packed with flavor and executed beautifully. The Thai Iced Tea was also excellent, while the Thai Ice Espresso Martini just wasn't for me. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant itself was clean, cozy, and inviting. The only downsides were that they had run out of their sourdough brioche buns, which I was excited to try, and reservations were tough to get as we had to book about a month in advance. I have to admit, given all the hype, I was expecting a bit more from Black Ruby. My friends and I came on a Thursday night with a reservation, and the restaurant was packed. Now, I suspect this might due in part because of the hype + location + thai/american fusion flavor, but even with a reservation we still ended up waiting about 30 minutes to be seated. Unfortunately, the service throughout dinner wasn't much better. Between the three of us, we ordered the scallion fries (which, for anyone wondering, aren't actually fries tossed in scallion oil or dressing), the fried calamari, the red curry Bolognese, the green curry pasta with steak, and, of course, the much-hyped Massaman burger. The fried calamari was probably the weakest dish. It had a fishier taste than I expected, and the breading was fairly greasy and tended to fall off. The scallion fries were good, though not especially memorable. Of the entrées, we preferred the green curry pasta over the red curry Bolognese, though both became a little heavy after a while. The Massaman burger was solid, but not quite the standout I was hoping for. Across the dishes, our biggest takeaway was that the curry sauces all leaned fairly rich and salty without much contrast. A little acidity or citrus would have gone a long way in brightening the flavors. Overall, Black Ruby was good, just not quite as memorable as I expected. Nothing we ordered really wowed us, but it's still a perfectly solid spot if you're in the area. When I was walking into my reservation for 7:15pm there was a long line of people waiting outside (like 10-12). I was looking to go here for a while and thanks to my friend Erin, it came back into my radar. It's giving sleek but with character. Visually reminds me of the design of Krasi.The servers really are on your butt when it comes to ordering and everything to the point where I was like can yall chill please lol. In the first 10 minutes we were there, I swear they came to the table like 3-5 times. They are really trying to get people in and out which I get but maybe be a little less obvious about it. Otherwise, service was respectful and nice. The presentation of the drinks was also really nice. I got a pink float and that was like strawberry milk with a nice scoop of ice cream. It was so fun and childish I made sure to have every single sip. The person next to me even asked what I got. My friend got the thai martini and she said it was delicious and couldn't taste the alcohol which for her is dangerous lol. The burgers, which are what they are known for, were a site to see indeed. For the curry burger it essentially is a pool of curry with a split in half burgers sitting in it. I was afraid that the buns would be soggy and to my surprise it wasn't and was delicious with this nice mini crunch from the topping. I actually preferred my burger which was a Big Crunch and juicy with pickled mustard greens. I also realized my burger had curry sauce in it too. Special mention to the scallion fries, what came out was not what I expected but it was one of my favorites. We got two things listed as spicy on the menu but did not taste spicy above a level 1 or 2. In addition, the menu online does not list their drinks lol so make sure to look at the last page for dessert and the milk floats. Came here on a Sunday for a later lunch and the place was pretty empty. Interior was sleek and modern with wooden finishes with plenty of lighting from the big windows by the front. Menu had a good selection of entrees which I shared everything with a friend rather than order separately. Service was solid and relatively quick. The Massaman Beef Burger (winter special) is out of this world. Easily one of the most unique and flavorful burgers I've ever had--juicy, packed with flavor, and the Massaman elements work perfectly. I'm not kidding when I say I've had dreams about this burger. The Thai PB+J burger is also excellent. The peanut butter and jelly somehow work perfectly with the beef and bacon without overpowering anything. The Thai scallion fries are delicious and the creamy Tom Yum with shrimp is really unique and flavorful. The Pad Thai spring rolls are good, but two spring rolls cut in half for $10 feels a little steep. Overall, Black Ruby is fantastic. Once I tried Black Ruby, it immediately became one of my favorite restaurants in Cambridge. The cocktails are creative and delicious--I love the Thai Tea Martini--and the food is fantastic as well. The Khao Soi burger is my go-to. It has all of the flavors and textures of Khao Soi, with pickled mustard greens for acid, crispy noodles for a crunchy flair, and just the right amount of spice. I find myself craving it often! The one and only bone I have to pick with Black Ruby is that the service, while very attentive, is almost TOO fast. I get that they want to turn tables over efficiently, but the last couple of times I've come, I kind of felt like they were rushing me out. The patty is well seasoned and the curry complements the patty well. The crispy topping adds an extra layer. Sourdough bun from a local bakery is chef's kiss. They serve phenomenal Thai-Western fusion dishes! I'd say this was one of the best restaurants I went to during my trip to Boston. I also appreciate how accommodating they are for people with dietary restrictions. We ordered 2 of their burgers and they came out pretty quick. I liked the uniqueness in how they turned a Thai dish into a burger without taking away the authenticity. The seasoning and sauce was just the right amount that it didn't overpower the chicken and rest of the burger. Staff was responsive and friendly. read more

I came here for dinner with a couple of friends and were seated immediately since we didn't mind sitting outside. The interior design inside was modern mid century. For dinner I had the following items: Khao Soi Beef Burger -- Tasted like Khao Soi curry if you ever had that so good. Although the patty was not dry, it was ever so slightly overcooked in both of our opinions. Tom yum shrimp -- This has a spicy kick to it but was so good. It's basically tom yum cream sauce with fettuccine. The noodles were cooked al dente. Honey Cheese Fries -- This was on their seasonal menu and it's so good. I loved the sweet and salty flavor. Should be an all year round side option. Overall I would come here again. I think this is a good and fun place to eat. I love their interesting take on American food but with Thai flavors. read more

While the food was pretty good the service was definitely lacking. I'm not sure if they were having an off night or just need to adjust their front of house staffing but it seemed like there was way too much going on for the FOH staff. It took about 20 minutes to get a glass of wine after we ordered it while sitting at the bar because it looked like the bartender was having to make desserts for a while. We also had the appetizer delivered but got no napkins or utensils until after we ate the app with our hands and we still had to ask for them since we knew we couldn't eat the pasta with our hands. The food was really good and I would order takeout from here but I wouldn't return to dine in unless some changes are made. read more

Black Ruby is touted as a burger place, but to pigeon-hole it in any one kind of restaurant (other than fusion) is doing it a disservice. There is a melting pot of Thai and many other cuisines that come together to make the menu what it is, which is a place that anyone should be able to find a great eating experience. Noodle dishes touted as pasta, burgers that are riffs on Thai and Asian cuisine, and the more "traditional" appetizers make up a menu that feels like a globe-trot more than a lunch or dinner. We tried a number of different dishes and were pleasantly surprised and had expectation exceeded by each of them. From the crispy basil burger to the spicy shrimp appetizer (special that day) to the Tom Yum Shrimp pasta, everything was dare I say borderline perfect. Executed with a deftness or slight of hand that seemed almost unexpected and left me longing for more as we paid our bill and said goodbye. If you are experiencing a sort of hesitation to trying Black Ruby, you honestly should just take the plunge and try it yourself because I don't know if there is a single review that can put the overall experience into words. The value, service, decor, and everything else other than the food all falls into place once you have your first bite of your meal. In a world and environment that we rarely frequent locations, Black Ruby feels like a place that if it were closer that we would do on an almost weekly basis.
