Service was accommodating. I told them I understood they were closing in an hour and asked them to go ahead and put my food in containers so that when I'm full, I could just leave. Dakzen! Parking was clutch today and we grabbed a spot right out side a block up. The space is cute, like the vibe in there and the staff were really nice. Thai street food / home style cooking it felt like. The Khao Soi with pork had depth and flavor in its broth and the lady enjoyed it! I usually always scoop some broth to try in any soupy style dish. Gai tod - The fried chicken skewers had great flavor, cooked well -- still moist and crispy! Thai ice tea - i liked their Thai Tea, nice creamy flavor! Not bitter or watery. Khao grapow with crispy pork belly definitely more of a home style dish imo, the flavor could get a tiring but the staff mentioned slap some fish chili sauce in it is how it's done: ofc that tip helped a lot pour some on there from the table condiments provided! I was recommended by a friend to try this place! We went there on a Friday night and had to get on an in-person waitlist. The wait was around 30 minutes until we got seated. There were around 8 tables at most. I was pleasantly surprised by the menu. They have a lot of noodles and rice dishes options; the classics as well as their specials. And most of their dishes were priced at $12.95, which is rare at this time! The dishes arrived very quickly within two minutes after we placed our order. The Khao Soi with crispy pork belly was really good - it was not too heavy like the other ones I've tried! The spice and the sour balanced the light coconut curry flavor well. The boat noodles were decent too. The soup could have been a little more flavorful. Both noodle dishes have a lot of meat as well. Next time I'll get extra sliced pork, but everything was great. My boyfriend's pork with noodles bowl was also pretty good. DAKZEN is a great place to go for Thai food in the David Square area! They serve mostly Thai street food but most of the same things you'd find at other Thai restaurants. Our server suggest putting fish sauce that is provided at each table. I'd say, for sure, add in some fish sauce because with the grapow flavor, it needs something to cut the flavoring a little bit. The gai tod is one of the appetizers, which consisted of fried chicken on skewers with sweet chilli sauce. I liked this dish. It had good flavor and came out nice & hot. I wish that the sauce came on the side rather than in the same plate because we had a little bit of difficulty dipping the chicken pieces in the sauce. Overall, a good place to go for something quick and tasty. Their khao soi is hard to beat and one of my favorite places that I've had it, so far in the Boston area. Will have to come back for that! The apps were all fried which made for an oily starter but had spice, sweetness and umami. For entree, we got pad see ew and khao soi. The curry had a strong kick which spice from chili oil and a little sweetness. The pad see ew could have used more veggies and egg as it was mostly noodles. Great little Thai restaurant offering a wide variety of authentic Thai dishes. I ordered the Ba Mee Moo Dang ($13), which had egg noodles, BBQ red pork, crispy pork belly, pork & shrimp wontons, and some other ingredients as well. This was a delicious bowl with different flavors and textures within it. It also came with a bowl of chicken broth on the side. The fried gyozas ($7) were nice and crispy on the outside and tasty as well. The pink guava juice ($3) was just from a little bottle and had a slightly strange taste, so that was just so-so in my opinion. The place is pretty small / cute, with colorful decor to give it a bright feel. The staff are pretty friendly and the service speed is decent. We were able to just walk in and grab a table on a weekend night (granted it was a bit rainy). Overall, Dakzen is a very solid choice for Thai food in the Davis Square area. I can't comment on the service or ambiance at the actual restaurant, since I've never dined at the actual restaurant. In terms of food, we ordered the Poh Piah, Rook Chin Tod, Pad Thai (Vegetable), and Khao Soi (Seafood and Tofu). I thought the appetizers were a fun way to shake it up, especially since Dakzen really focuses on street food. I've definitely had better Pad Thai from other places, but it was still solid. As always, the real star of the show was the Khao Soi. We got one with tofu and one with seafood, both of which were absolutely delicious! I will be dreaming about that Khao Soi for days... The portions here aren't huge but the prices are proportional so you get the chance to try a lot of items if you're hungry. 2 of us got their sai ua ($5.95), rook chin tod ($5.95), grapow fried rice with crispy pork ($11.95), and khao soi with chicken ($8.95). I also got their Thai lime iced tea ($3.99). The sai ua had a really nice herby flavor and came with peanuts, fresh ginger, and chili peppers. The sausage wasn't too dry and was flavorful on its own! The rook chin tod was interesting to me because I don't usually get deep-fried beef/fish balls. This would be a good option for people who like beef/pork/fish balls but I wasn't particularly blown away. I think their crispy pork is probably their best item! It really shone through in the grapow fried rice. I didn't like how the fried rice was saucy (I prefer fried rice that is on the drier side) but the seasoning and flavor was great. The khao soi was decent. I liked how the broth wasn't overly sweet like how this dish is prepared at many other Thai restaurants in the area. However, I felt that the broth was a bit bland. The chicken was just plain shredded chicken so it didn't really stand out in the dish. I highly recommend the Thai lime iced tea which wasn't overpoweringly sweet/creamy like a typical Thai tea but still had the smoky flavor. I love how there are various dried and pickled chili peppers at the table, and a deliciously smoky chili oil! I really wanted to like this place - they have a cool mural outside the restaurant and the concept of Thai street food is exactly what we need in the Boston area.. but the flavors of everything I tried were underdeveloped. The fried shrimp in the tamarind sauce looked great, and the fry on the shrimp was perfect, but the sauce was a bland. I did like that they cleaned and removed the skin off the shrimp, and they placed the shrimps' fried head back on the body - it was charming plating, and eating the fried head was fun, extra crunchy. You can tell the broth had a lot of seasonings, it tasted like broth mixed with herbal teas - it probably needed a few more hours to simmer in order to get those tastes to blend. Dakzen lover til I die. This was my favorite place to eat while at Tufts because the food is delicious and cheap and it's so close to campus. The gui chai tod is probably tied with the khao soi for my favorite thing on the menu. It's perfectly crispy with lots of chives, and I love the sweet and spicy soy dipping sauce.
