I had the pleasure to dine at 9Zaab in the flesh and bone once, but have ordered takeout several times and several times have received high-quality food. Not long ago I partook in a meal that consisted of, but was not limited to, Khao Moo Sam Chan Tod, Pad See You, and Gyoza. The first item is the tender and fatty belly of a piglet, deep fried to a golden brown, and served over a bed of rice. One (1) chicken's egg appears on the side, along with several slices of cucumber. The Pad See You, spelled here in this fashion, is a quintessential stir-fried noodle with protein and vegetables. Gyoza is a dump; if you do not know what it is you can google it. The entrails of these gyoza here are of unspecified origin, but bring pleasure to the mouth. All of the aforementioned items are well-seasoned, reasonably portioned, and appealing to the eye, nose, and finger. It can also be said that the service is speedy and the atmosphere in the establishment itself is pleasant. The food, though, is of course what is most important. The food! The flavors! The deliciousness! A meal was shared here while rekindling a friendship that hasn't been experienced in over a decade. This was the perfect cozy spot to hold this special moment. We were so satisfied and delighted by everything we ate. Three dishes were shared amongst three gal pals and every plate had not a morsel of sauce, rice, or noodle leftover. The food at 9Zaab is a real treat and truly refreshing. The menu is massive and it's because they have so many authentic offerings. You like Papaya Salad? Have you ever had it with Salted Crab or Anchovy Paste ... or better yet BOTH? That's the kind of offerings we're talking about here. You can get the typical dishes you expect from a Thai restaurant but they're not shying away from what may unfamiliar to most either. My group of 4 ordered a feast. Crispy rolls and gyoza - standard fare but very crispy. The Papaya Salad is probably the best I've had in Boston and the best part? It's actually spicy. 9Zaab was also one of the first Thai restaurants to offer a combination Khao Mun Gai before the Hainanese chicken trend really took over the food scene - but this dish gives you the best of both worlds of poached and fried chicken in one with a spicy sauce and sweet and sour sauce. We shared the delicious Yum Na Tok Grilled - a grilled pork (you can also opt for beef) with fresh red onion, cilantro, & scallions, crispy roasted rice all combined together in a spicy lime dressing. We also split 2 broth-y dishes of Yen Ta Fo and Boat Noodle Soup. Some of the best Thai food that I've had in Cambridge and that's saying a lot seeing as there are Thai places nearly everywhere! The food is very authentic and well priced too. The restaurant is currently only open for takeout, which you can order online and pick up in 10-15 min or so. Today, my bf and I got the prawn pad thai and the larb moo grob. The prawn pad thai was insanely good, with three huge prawns covering our dish. Under the huge juicy prawns was an omelette surrounding our pad thai, which we quickly mixed in. The noodles were flavorful and had small dried shrimp to add to the prawn flavor of the dish. The noodles were also not dry at all but also weren't swimming in sauce as they are in some places. Would highly recommend. The larb moo grob, a dish of stir fried meat of some sort with some lettuce and other leaves in a slightly sour (and optionally spicy) sauce was personally not really for me. We ordered the non-spicy version because I can't really eat spicy food, but I could see how this would be a great dish when spicy. If you like a more sour/ spicy sort of dish then I could see this being for you. I've also been to Thailand numerous times, having grown up in Asia, and this dish tastes very authentic. It's just not my cup of tea. I visit this place every time I stop by Cambridge, and would highly recommend to anyone looking for some authentic Thai food. I've done takeout twice from 9Zaab in the past few weeks. The lunch special for $10.95 -- give or take a few dollars depending on the protein you choose -- is a good deal. I have tried the mango curry with chicken and the ginger chicken. The mango curry was originally made with cashews, which I told the restaurant over the phone I was allergic to. They apologized profusely and made another one for me quickly. The curry once I was able to try it was delicious. The ginger chicken was also good (I would get the mango curry though if I was going back!) but the portion of chicken was a bit small. Nice, crisp, fresh vegetables though. The Thai iced tea and Thai iced coffee my friend and I both thought were overly sugary. Overall, really like this place -- nice employees, unpretentious, food-focused. Kitchen communication could perhaps be improved to deal with allergies better, lunch special portions could be larger, and drinks could be less sweet. Great tasting food though all around! read more

Our Sunday lunch at 9Zaab was a pleasure. 9Zaab is not a large establishment with seating for perhaps up to 20, so we did have to wait a bit for a party to finish and pay. But we were encouraged to take a seat, to place our order ahead of time if we liked, and offered a move to another more comfortable table when available. Yes, service was quite pleasant, and I don't think it was because I had checked in on Yelp for a free Thai Ice Tea ($3). I think it is just their MO. Their prices are reasonable, but they also offer a few options if you hit certain spend levels. They have two coupons listed on their take-out menu: free scallion pancake ($6.95) if you order $40 or more, free Khao Na Gai ($10.95) with purchase of $60 or more. Alternatively, with a purchase of $60 or more, you can opt for a spin of the wheel for a variety of other prize options, but then it is up to chance for what you get. For our party of 6, we hit the $60 spend easy and went with the Khao Na Gai (Chicken stew over jasmine rice with brown gravy served with cucumber, Chinese sausage, jalapeno and fried egg), which in my opinion was a good pick. The brown sauce was tasty and flavored up the white rice well, the chicken tender, and the lap cherng added a nice other sweet flavor and texture to the dish. We let our eyes lead the way in a couple of our other selections and ended up with the following: Moo Ping $7.95 Pork BBQ on skewers (4) served with Thai dipping sauce and sticky rice Hoi Tod $13.95 Thai style Crispy fried mussel pancake, egg, bean sprout and scallion served with Thai Chili sauce Jungle Beef $13.95 Grilled marinated slices of beef served with sticky rice and spicy lime juice on the side Khao Moo Sam Chan Tod $11.95 (fried pork belly) Thai style fried pork belly over rice, boiled egg topped with house special sauce Duck Pad Thai $12.95 We enjoyed our meal, and fully intent to come back, but I will add a few informational comments: Their pork tends to be fatty based on our two pork dishes. Belly is of course layered with fat, and it was tasty, but the fat wasn't melty. Our pork belly pick was a bit dry as a dish since the sauce came on the side, and I personally didn't pour it on. Their pad thai was a less sweet version, and not the vinegary sort that another DC prefers, but as a group we quite enjoyed it. I found the thinner slices of beef to be almost too jerky like, but the thicker cut more preferable. But either way, they were well marinated. Tip: Christina's Homemade Ice Cream is 0.7 miles (13 min walk), which is generally walkable, but perhaps not during the really hot days of summer. read more

Really enjoyed my time at 9zaab - it's a cozy Thai restaurant that brings tons of Thai street food items. By the way, check in to 9zaab to get a free Thai iced tea! I thought it was a bit too sweet for me, but still gotta love some Thai iced tea. We got the Fried Chicken Skins - SO good, not overly oily or anything, just crunchy chicken skin perfection. Next, we got the Hoi Tod, which came on a sizzling plate. I really enjoyed it and it was one of my favorite dishes. The sauce and the bean sprouts really helped to balance out the mussel flavor when it started to be overwhelming, so a really great dish. We sampled some dishes including khao soi (northern yellow curry egg noodle soup), khao ka moo (braised pork knuckle meat over rice), yum nam tok (spicy grilled meat salad), hoi tod (fried mussel omelet/pancakes), tom yum (spicy and sour soup) and sukiyaki (vermicelli on a sizzling plate). Made a reservation for 3 people on an early Wednesday evening through Google Assistant (which was super convenient). When we first walked in, they had our table ready with a 'Reserved' sign by a window. The restaurant was pretty empty with only one other table occupied. However, it started filling up around 7-7:30 and most tables were full. Street was readily available and free after 5pm. We started off with Thai fish cakes and the papaya salad for appetizers. The fish cakes were full of flavor, especially with the dipping sauce that it came with. The papaya salad was ok, not great. It kind of felt like it was drowning in too much liquid. It was nice that they gave us shrimp along with the dish but it was only 2 pieces. For the main course, we ordered the crispy pad Thai, Khao Yum Gai Zaab (fried chicken dish) and the beef stew hot pot (not pictured). The pad Thai was a unique dish because I haven't had it crispy before. Our table ended up only eating about half of it because it was a bit too sweet and not palatable. The gai Zaab dish was also ok, not great. The chicken was very thin and it felt like the breading/coating didn't stick on the chicken enough. It was also lukewarm by the time we got the dish. The beef stew hot pot tasted really good but quite expensive for what the dish consisted of. It had some beef balls, tendon, a few pieces of meat, and vegetables served in a broth. The stew didn't come with any rice or noodles, which it definitely needed because the broth was so rich. Overall, would come again because there are so many dishes on the menu that I wanted to try. The crispy pad thai, I don't recommend, is fried thin rice noodle with sweet and sour sauce, just taste like the sweet and sour pork that you eat at a Chinese restaurant. For the soft shell crab pad thai, the sauce for the pad thai is a more tangy taste than the pad thai in other Thai restuarant. The shrimp zaab is really spicy with their special sauce but it tastes good, without the sauce, it is just bland steamed shrimp.
