I recently tried Dakzen after having frequented another popular Thai restaurant in Cambridge and this is the best Thai restaurant I've tried up here. Well-flavored dishes, excellent delivery service - unfortunately, we haven't been to their location but have plans to stop by the next time I'm in Davis Sq. Definitely check them out, it's worth it! read more

My friend and I dropped by this place for lunch four months ago. We got the gui-chai-tod, khao soi, and ba-mee-moo-dang. The gui-chai-tod are fried chive triangle cakes served with ginger soy sauce. They were delicious and my favorite thing that we ordered. The khao soi is a chicken curry noodle soup that is popular in northern Thailand. It came with chicken, egg noodles, red onions, pickled veggies, cilantro and fried egg noodle in a yellow curry broth. It was a tad spicy but very flavorful. The ba-mee-moo-dang was an egg noodle plate with bbq pork, crispy pork belly, boiled egg, crispy wonton chips, pork and shrimp wonton and bbq sauce with chicken broth on the side. I really liked the juicy pork belly in the noodles. The Thai iced tea also was above par. Prices are decent and the food was flavorful. Thumbs up! read more

Oh My God!! The food is amazing!!!! I love Thai food and during the past 15 years have tried at many different Thai restaurants, this one is among the BEST in Massachusetts!!! The food offering is different, and I have never seen Pad Thai presented the way it did here!!! Totally different vibes, and the food is indeed authentic!!! From looking at the menu, I knew we were going to get Khao Soi (Curry soup with yellow noodle and crispy pork) and Khao Grapow (Rice with crispy pork belly and fried eggs). I thought I was head and heels with Khao Soi, but it turned out I was head and heels with Khao Grapow!! It isn't like any of the Thai food I have had in the past 15 years!!!!! Opened up a new horizon!! The pork belly is so crunchy, rich in taste! The sauce was flavorful and tasted so good with rice!!! I hesitated ordering Khao Soi because I just had Khao Soi at another Thai restaurant 3 days ago, but since it looks like the most popular dish here, I tried it anyway and sooooo glad I did!! Unlike the other place, the pork belly was sooooo crispy!! The curry soup is good!! Did I tell you the noodle is soooo good as well? Part of the noodle is crispy!! The veggie came with it was also very authentic!!! We will definitely come back!!! The dish looked small but soooo filling! We rolled out of there!! The service was good! The food came out soooo much quicker than I expected! We were lucky the line was short and we got a table right away! They came to your table, order, you pay, then they bring the food! read more

I went in with high expectations since my partner was a big fan in college but was a bit disappointed. The staff was great and very friendly. My partner got the Tom yum noodles which ended up being super spicy and weirdly sweet - it didn't taste like Tom yum at all. I got the massaman curry which I haven't tried before and although it was good, it was also very sweet and only came out room temperature. I would have liked it to be hotter. On the menu it said level one spice but didn't taste spicy at all. The portion sizes were also a bit small but given the price, still good. They also have 10% off if you pay in cash which was nice. read more

Dakzen lover til I die. This was my favorite place to eat while at Tufts because the food is delicious and cheap and it's so close to campus. The gui chai tod is probably tied with the khao soi for my favorite thing on the menu. It's perfectly crispy with lots of chives, and I love the sweet and spicy soy dipping sauce. The khao soi with crispy pork belly (definitely recommend the add-on!) is sooo good. I feel like the portions have shrunk a little bit this past year, but it's still so cheap so I don't mind too much. I'm not at Tufts anymore, but I make it a point to stop by here whenever I'm in town. read more

Dakzen is a must-have for Thai food in the Boston area - its food quality and price point is unmatched, honestly! For under $10, most of their dishes are fantastic and super filling. I cannot recommend Dakzen enough! The only reason this is 4 stars is because of the eating experience for the time I'm writing about. We had to wait ~15 minutes for a table since they wouldn't seat parties unless everyone was there, which was fine, but upon ordering, we had to pay immediately despite having table service. It felt weird to tip without knowing how the service would actually go, but we did it anyway, and then we saw other tables paying after the food was served. Super inconsistent and confusing - why were we the only ones who had to pay first? The food itself was great of course - the sausage and the other fried pork appetizer were great. Couldn't recommend them enough! My friend wanted to order their Thai Lime Ice Tea as a drink, but they said they stopped serving it which was a shame. Hopefully they remove it from all their menus soon to avoid confusion! My entree had great flavor, but got cold super quickly. It definitely tasted better hot so I'm wondering if I just should've eaten it faster - it seemed to go cold within 5 minutes though which was a shame. The portion size was great though and I would love to get it again! Overall, Dakzen is a very solid staple for Thai food. Their service was questionable the day we came, but maybe that was just a one-time fluke! read more

One of my favorite places to eat around porter/Davis! Super affordable too My go to is the khao soi. I like this with pork as the chicken can be dry sometimes. I've tried a few of their appetizers including the moo yaw tod and the goong ma kham, but neither stood out to me enough to get a second time. read more

Small space on the outskirts of Davis Square, with not much more than a handful of tables, but the service is quick and much of their business is takeout, so the waits aren't bad. Your server will take payment immediately after ordering, but it's full table service, and the methodology helps speed up table turnover, which is a good thing. A better thing: the food. This isn't some suburban joint getting by on ice cream scoops of rice topped with a cherry; this is fairly authentic Thai street food with bold flavors and ingredients you don't often find elsewhere. Sai Ua: Thai style spicy sausage, sliced lengthwise and served with accompaniments. Lots of flavor, perfect for sharing. If you're with a group, be the hero and order this on your tab. Chicken GraPow: Excellent rendition hitting all the stops, with a stronger oyster sauce presence than most and a little milder than most. Pad Kee Mow: Thin, flat, soft but chewy noodles with a spicy oyster sauce. What makes this dish exhilarating is the berry-filled twig of fresh peppercorns (between the lowest two onion slices in my photo). Explosively delicious and even though it stings a little, it keeps pulling you back in for more. I got mine with vegetables only (and it still wowed), but you can pick your protein. Khao Soi: Tried most recently, this was my only disappointment at DakZen. Curry soup barely lukewarm and not as thick as at other Thai restaurants, nor as spicy. Flavor still fabulous otherwise. Chicken tender. Nice presentation, with the mustard greens, onions, and chicken placed in distinct piles for custom mixing. read more

Update! Dakzen remains one of the best deals on quality food in the Boston area. Most of their dishes are $9 and their appetizers are $6. Their food is really tasty! While I am still not a huge fan of their crispy pork belly, their dishes are all really solid. I've had most of their appetizers and you can't go wrong with whatever you pick. My #1 recommendation is the Khao Soi now. The curry broth is so amazingly rich. It has an awesome variety of ingredients, with both crispy noodles and soft noodles. The meat is good but actually takes a back seat to the rest of the dish. read more

Good food makes me happy, and when food is as delicious as the food from Dakzen, it's no surprise that after my dinner there this weekend, I again left with a full stomach and a full heart. This time I ordered the boat noodles with beef - so delicious, with a rich and flavourful broth, yummy, chewy noodles, and a generous helping of tender beef slices. It's not as spicy as maybe one would find in Thailand, but there's a lot of chili oil, etc. there for you to customise your dishes based on how much spice you can tolerate. My friend's tom yum noodles were amazing too - really good mix of sweet and sour flavours in the soup with a pretty decent level of spice. Also, prices are still crazy low for the portion sizes and the amazing quality, and while water is not free (maybe a little *too * authentically Thai...), the drinks are not very expensive, either, and really quite refreshing. I generally don't review the same place multiple times unless I had a dramatically different experience, but I was honestly just so happy with my meal that I really wanted to share again how great the experience was. Dakzen is without a doubt one of the best restaurants in Boston, and I'm lowkey already planning my next visit :) read more

I recommend dakzen to anyone in the area looking for Thai food. I've had the Khao Soi, pad thai, Thai iced tea and gui chai tod and I'm a big fan of all of them. Last time I ate there was in April 2021. They have dividers, require temperature checks, contact information for contact tracing and to use hand sanitizer before being seated. I felt safe and comfortable while dining inside. read more

Dakzen bills itself as a Thai street food restaurant, and while I've never had street food in Thailand it hits ALL the right notes for the other various street foods I've eaten abroad. These "requirements" are: - Should be cheap, like fast food/dollar menu cheap - Loaded with flavor/spices but light on oil and grease - Dishes should not be easily identifiable to the average American - Served with a smile - Crafted with love and precision Dakzen embodies all of the above and has brought even more knowledge of Thai cuisine to me in the short year that I've lived a block away. First, it's probably the easiest (and quickest) takeout you can get in Davis square. We will get 2 entrees, and 1 or 2 apps for under $30 with tip. This is Boston... I challenge you to find anything NEAR the quality of food for this price. I've only found one other place in the area that rivals this sort of value proposition, but it's not a place that serves Asian cuisine. The most amazing thing to me is how they get all the flavor into the dishes without making them feel too greasy or like you are eating an oil slick. I used to assume that Thai food was just naturally greasy and oily, but found that it's just the lazy way to cook some of these very nuanced (and delicate) noodle dishes... add MOAR oil. Dakzen doesn't use that methodology though, and instead treats the ingredients with the respect and delicate touch they deserve and it shows through when you enjoy dishes such as their traditional Pad Thai, the fried gyoza, Pad See Ew, and/or the Khao Grapow. The portions can be enough for two smaller meals or one larger meal (if you get an appetizer or side to go with the entrees). It tastes so unique and unlike many of the "Americanized" Thai dishes I've had over the years and it really blew me away the first time we ordered food from here. There is definitely some magic in what they do behind the cooking line in Dakzen, and words will never do the balance of the spicy, sweet, sour, and tangy dishes that come out to be enjoyed. The space is very humble, but very clean and organized. There are only a few tables inside, so if you plan to dine in you may have to wait in order to get a place to sit and enjoy your food. It's well worth the wait though, but if you cannot afford the time get it to go as there are plenty of places to sit and eat around Davis Square!!! No matter if you live in Davis Square or just find yourself visiting/passing through, you should ACTIVELY SEEK OUT Dakzen. Whether you are a takeout veteran of theirs like me, or want to enjoy the cozy and intimate dining area - you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu or how you choose to enjoy it. It has become our "go to" Thai restaurant in Boston/Mass, and is easily in the top 3 of all Thai restaurants we've been to (and we've dined at probably close to 50 over the past 2 decades). It deserves all the accolades and high praise it routinely gets in the press and media, but don't take others' word for it - this is a place that needs to be experienced to really understand the magic behind this edgy street food empire. read more

DAKZEN is known for its Thai street food. I ordered Khao Soi with chicken ($11.99), Gui Chai Tod, ($7.49), and Thai Iced Tea ($4.99) via UberEats. I love Thai food and was very excited to try this place (the reviews seem great) however this is another overhyped place. The Khao Soi tasted like it was made from a grocery bought red curry paste. I did appreciate that it came in a separate container. The serving size is also extremely small compared to the price you pay or other Thai places. The Gui Chai Tod tastes amazing and the sauce that came with it also had a kick to it. This was honestly the best part of the meal. It was almost like a scallion pancake but triangle shaped! I would definitely get these again. The ice tea was too sweet for my taste and tasted more like artificial sugar and colouring. This was also over priced for the quality. Overall, the food tastes average and is definitely overpriced. Perhaps I didn't get the right items. read more

The wait took awhile, but it's a nice, quaint, and modern space. The service was iconic; I love the banter and vibe of the staff and the food took almost no time at all to come. I was shocked at how quick and efficient they were. As for the food, it's mediocre. You get exactly what you expect, and there's nothing special about it. It was good and affordable. read more

Cute place but I was fairly disappointed by the food - pork belly was pretty tough and dry. Pad see ew is on the sweeter side, and the pork belly dish/rice was on the saltier side. DAKZEN - Khao Soi Pad See Ew Crispy Pork Belly (Side) - Thai Near Me - Somerville, Massachusetts

A friend highly recommends Dakzen, and I wholeheartedly agree! This is a small, no frills restaurant featuring affordable Thai street noodles near Davis Square. Must order are: - Khao soi: curry noodle soup is SO complex and flavorful. Not too spicy and not too salty. This comes with half a boiled egg, egg noodles and a crispy noodle ball. The combo of noodles gave the dish contrasting textures. Topped with red onions, cilantro, pickled mustard, and lime wedge. Multiple choice of protein. I got it with seafood (2 each of mussels, calamari/squid, and peeled head on medium-large shrimp, additional $3) which worked so well with the curry soup. - Gui-chai-tod: Fried chive veggie triangle cake served with ginger dipping sauce. The outside looked overly fried, but the inside was surprisingly spongy and soft. We also got the following - Pad see ew with chicken: My friend's dish so I didn't taste. She said it was yummy but nothing extraordinary. - Crispy pork belly on the side: They mean crispy! Thoroughly crunchy, no soft or fatty meat at all. This felt more like a garnish and cannot be eaten alone. I put this in the soup and worked well. Would be weird with a rice dish. Nice portion size as a side. - Moo yaw tod: do NOT recommend. It looks like a fish ball in the shape of a flat dumpling, and tastes a little like pork. Very salty. One of the rare occasions I couldn't finish the food. - Thai iced tea: nice to sip throughout the meal. Rich and very sweet. Maybe ask to go lighter on the ice so it doesn't get diluted at the end. Service was fast. No reservations. Give it a try if you like authentic Thai food. I hope to be back for the boat noodles or Tom yum noodle soup. read more

Still one of the best thai places in Somerville/Boston. They upped their menu prices to around $11-12.95 a dish, but they also increased their portion sizes. We got the Khao soi (always good) tom yum noodle soup, the larb gai (a January special), and the puk boong fai dang. The larb was really good! This place's interior is really cool. The customer service is great. They have a lot of Thai dishes that are very unique and authentic and are the types you can't get anywhere else, especially in Boston. I was very excited that they have rook chin tod 'cause it reminds me of my childhood street food/snacks I used to get. The boat noodle soup was an experience and the khao grapow was good but when i tell you it's spicy... it's SPICY and sadly didn't come with a fried egg (I guess that's something you gotta order extra on the side?). A little further down in Davis Square, Dakzen has a unique street food vibe with affordable prices. Most dishes here are less than $10 while still being large enough to fill you up. The service is fast though be aware there is no tap water available, you have to buy it bottled (or buy another drink). In addition to being quite tasty, Dakzen offers some dishes that are less common among Thai restaurants in the city (and when offered, are rarely done as well) - only note is that both of our noodle soups were a touch too sweet. Overall, this place is great and a rare find in Boston. The restaurant itself is not that big and it would be difficult to eat in with a party of more than four people, but it is definitely a must try place for either sit in or take out. read more

Wowow so lucky to have come across this find! This was one of the best Thai restaurants I've tried. Dakzen is a cozy quick-eat place in Somerville with speedy service (pay before receiving the meal). Their prices are truly unbeatable (most dishes less than $10 for a sizeable portion) especially when compared against Boston standard prices. The quality to price ratio for this place really earns itself a 5 star rating. Definitely try their most popular dish, Khao Soi ($8.95), a curry noodle soup from northern Thailand. It was my first time trying it so I have no other comparison, but I thought it was an amazing dish. The curry broth was flavorful and spicy, and I loved that it came with the boiled egg noodles and a crispy fried egg noodle nest on top. Each table also has 4 different types of hot sauce available if you like even more kick to your soup. We chose a hot 90 degree day to try this hot dish so I was definitely sweating throughout the meal. At the end, I had plenty of broth leftover so I asked for the remainder to be packaged, and it tasted great the next day with more noodles/rice at home. My boyfriend also got the khao-moo-dang, which includes BBQ red pork, crispy pork belly, sweet sausage, and a broiled egg. As an FYI, the crispy pork belly is fried all the way through for maximum crunch. He was a fan of the dish and really enjoyed the sauce that came with. We also shared the thai lime iced tea (house made) and pink guava juice (pre packaged) which was refreshing, but a little too sweet for our taste. Definitely will be returning again some time! read more

One of my only truly 5 star reviews and probably my favorite restaurant in Boston. My girlfriend and I get takeout from here all the time (especially during the pandemic) and everything is consistently high quality. Also, all the noodles are ~$10 so it's a great value as well! Our favorite is the Khao Soi (I get it with pork, she gets it with crispy pork), but the other menu options I've tried, including the Ba Mi Moo Dang, have been great as well. My girlfriend's family is Thai and they loved the authenticity of the food and the menu options for Thai street food. The Khao Soi is a creamy slightly spicy curry noodle soup with both crispy and soft egg noodles, pickled greens, and an egg. I love how the creaminess of the soup is balanced by the sourness of the greens, and there is a balance of textures between the soft and crispy noodles. We've been to Dakzen probably close to 30 times and we almost always get the Khao Soi, so that would be what I would recommend! read more

I should have visited Dakzen earlier as I live within walking distance but alas I finally had a chance to try out their delicious Thai street food after living here for 18 months. I was very impressed with the Chicken Red Curry that's currently their special menu. The chicken was left bone in which really add to the flavor of the dish. The eggplants and rest of the dish were simply amazing its definitely one of the best thai curry I've had ever. The crispy pork was really good too although some can be a bit dry however its a solid dish and I would order it again. The pork ribs was decent but I thought a bit too much sauce and I didn't quite enjoy it as much but its very unique indeed. Definitely come and visit if you're bored of the typical Thai food in the area. DAKZEN is quite memorable and stands out on its own read more

Stopped in this past Wednesday to grab some carry out. I've been here plenty of times but this was my first time getting carry out. As with any food to go, i always am cautious of the quality of food due to storage, humidity not being a food friend, and not being able to eat it super fresh as it's being brought out from the kitchen. To my surprise, everything was packed like a pro. the food was as good as carry out quality can be and Dakzen hit that level. i ordered the khao soi and the ba mee moo. in both dishes, the dry ingredients were in the main container with the soup in a separate smaller container. again, very pleasantly surprised. The paper bag used for the order was very thin and ripped in the car. Also, i would have liked to see a piece of cardboard on the bottom of the bag to add support. when you pick up your food, you can't go into the restaurant, there's a barrage of tables that greets you as soon as you open the front door. i actually feel safer this way as no one is in contact with the Dakzen team which cooks the food. The Pad Thai and the Khao-Moo-Dang were a pleasant surprise - noodles for the Pad Thai itself weren't authentic and the dish was slightly soggier than what is served in Thailand. The Khao-Moo-Dang was slightly sweeter than I expected. ... Service was great and the dishes are served incredibly fast. I've been here twice within the span of a week. The food has a lot of flavor and is extremely affordable. I cannot comment on if the food is authentic, but they had a lot of different dishes I had never seen before. Also, they are open until 2am, which is something you don't see very often around here! Experience: First time I came for late lunch on a weekday, there was no one around. I got seated instantly, chose my dish, ate it, and left. Very minimal interaction with the staff, as expected from a low key spot. The second time I came, it was dinner time on a weekend and much more crowded. I gave my name and number to the staff, and they had their own version of waitlist. No reservations. After waiting for a text message, we were not immediately seated, but given menus to help us start deciding. Please note we weren't walking around, just waiting outside the restaurant, so we arrived almost instantly after the text was sent. When our table was cleaned, we sat and ordered, and paid at that moment. I feel there is not a huge need to tip largely as you are expected to bus your own table at the end. The food comes out really fast! The portions may not appear too big, but are quite filling and delicious. Things to note: No tap water, must purchase bottled water (beware for the spicy dishes!) Limited seating (consider take out/delivery) Pay when you order Service your own table when finished Dishes: (4/5) Pad-Se-Ew with tofu: Tasted really good, but nothing special. (5/5) Khao Soi with beef: A runny curry consistency with egg noddles, meat of choice, and crunchy noodle topping. I didn't find it spicy, but they have an assortment of spices on the table if you would like to add some heat. I will be back to try more varieties of street noodles. read more
