However, the kway-teow (flat rice noodles) itself was too thin that it nearly all stock together, causing a kind-of-soggy texture. Food was solid with a lot of great vegetarian and eggless options, which I appreciated. We tried the Kah Moo as a starter--definitely unique, kind of reminded me of a coconut pakora. Not my personal favorite, but interesting. The Pad Krapow was flavorful and well-balanced, and the Thai Ma-Po Tofu was decent but leaned a little too salty for my taste. We ended with the mango sticky rice--the mango was super fresh, but I found myself missing that strong coconut flavor that makes for a great mango sticky rice. Enjoyed every dish we got from the Tom Yum soup with its refreshing astringency to the Kah Moo, fried Tofu and coconut fritters with a delicious tamarind sauce. I love the Larb Issan and my wife enjoyed that it was not too spicy and I requested some very good house made roasted ground chilies to add. Stopped by here to grab dinner with a small group of friends. I got the drunken noodles with tofu. I asked for it in a medium but I would probably call the dish mild. If you like your food spicier I'd go up a notch or two. The food was decent and the service was ok. They had some ok outdoor seating on the sidewalk, but really it's a somewhat busy street or can be right at Cambridge rush hour so a little loud but the evening was pleasant enough to sit outside so we took advantage. Our server was fine but some of the interactions with the staff and the policies were just surprising. I walked in to use the restroom and was stopped and then rather rudely asked if I was a customer and I said yes, I'm seated outside and the person reluctantly got out of my way. I customer only policy is fine, Attitude with it not so great. The other thing that surprised me was that they refused to split the check, at all, we couldn't even give them more than one credit card. Anyway, that was rather surprising as well. Was in the area and so glad to happen upon an Asian restaurant. The place itself is quite small and cozy, parties of 2-4 would be perfect. When we arrived after the lunch rush, there was no wait and we were seated immediately. The menu lists some lunch specials and each comes with an appetizer but the portion was smaller than I expected. For the price though, the quality of the food is decent and you won't go hungry. I walk past this restaurant all the time and finally got the chance to stop by for dinner. This place truly lives up to the hype-- the interior is clean with an elegant aesthetic and all of the people who work here are extremely kind. Two of us walked in without a reservation and were able to get seated pretty quickly, but the restaurant was pretty busy so I'd try to make a reservation the next time I come especially if I have a larger party. We got the Jim jiew fries ($7.95), cashew gai krob ($16.95), and kua kling gai ($16.95) with white rice ($1 each bowl). I'm usually not the biggest fan of crinkle-cut fries because they're mushy 50% of the time but the fries here are nice and crispy! The seasoning on the fries was addictive-- it had a very umami, almost seafood/fish taste to it. The fries were hot and crispy on the outside and super fluffy on the inside. The entrees were very large portions and we ended up taking leftovers home. The cashew gai krob had a generous portion of both crispy chicken and vegetables. The sauce was thick, savory, and sweet. I loved the flavors in the kua kling gai! It is supposed to be the spiciest dish on the menu and definitely packs a kick, but is not tortuous. While the dish mainly features ground chicken, there are fresh vegetables, bell peppers, and a very flavorful, earthy seed that adds lots of texture. The dish was so savory yet fresh at the same time and I haven't encountered a similar flavor profile in the Boston/Cambridge area in a while. Excellent family owned and run Thai restaurant in Cambridge. We tried the tofu and mixed vegetable pad thai, tofu and mixed vegetable pad kee mao, and yuzu spritz cocktail. Everything was 10/10. The food was fresh and piping hot, you could tell it was all made to order. Portions were also more than generous - we got 2 meals out of each dish. The flavors were robust and authentic. Thai is one of my favorite cuisines, and having tried countless restaurants, I find it difficult to find one with authentic flavors that hasn't been "watered down" for the American palette. The flavors at Mae were congruent with dishes I'd eaten in Thailand, making me a very happy and satisfied customer. The yuzu spritz was light and refreshing, perfect pairing with the food. OMG, so delicious!! We ordered the Crispy Chicken Zabb, the Crying Tiger, Calamari and the Fried Pad Thai Noodles. The star was definitely the Crispy Chicken Zabb. In fact we ordered another one after we finished the first one. It's that classic blend of spicy, limey, minty flavors with perfectly cooked chicken nuggets. Soooo good. Order that. The other items were also delicious but I don't think I could come here without always ordering the crispy chicken. We met the co-owner who was very nice and welcoming. He told us that his wife was the chef. So our compliments to her for serving up delicious, authentic food. And compliments to him for running the front of the house. Never an easy job. I've often joked that you can tell when a Chinese restaurant is good when there are a lot of Chinese people in it. While Mae Asian covers a variety of cuisines, it was very clear that there was a predominance of Asians dining here, at least when we were there. So in this case I was right! The Khao Soi was too sweet for me, also a little too salty and not spicy enough! I ended up adding hot sauces and because they have several different kinds, they came over and described them, which was nice. The soup was thicker than I expected, but the raw onions helped to cut through the richness. I also liked that I could really taste the egg flavor of the egg noodles. The short rib pieces were small but the texture was excellent -- so tender and juicy! The Original Street Noodles were even more boring, and the Singapore Mae Fun was so boring that I honestly can't remember anything about it. We're been to Thailand a number of times and eaten tons of street food there as well; this was NOTHING like the food in Thailand. All the dishes were disappointing, watered-down for gringo palates. There are many Thai/SE Asian restaurants around that serve authentic Thai food; this definitely isn't one of them. All this should have rated 3-stars. But I had to decrease this to one star due to the silly number of unwelcoming rules: 60 minute time limit, no substitutions (repeated 20+ times on the menu), no spice level changes, mandatory 20% tip. We just arrived in town to help our daughter move into her dorm. Mae Eatery is a delight. Exterior is unassuming. We were greeted by a welcoming staff which included the chefs husband. We ordered around 8 dishes to be shared family style. We started with chicken wing appetizers with a savory but not overpowering light Tom yum sauce. It was delicious. All the other dishes followed were all top tier tasty treats. Wine list is limited but gave us opportunities for bottles we typically would not have tried. Both the Beaujolais and Pinot paired very well with their dishes. Also tried a Vietnamese beer for the first time. Served in a rich duck broth) - This broth was so incredibly flavorful. Some might think its on the salty side, but I really enjoyed it. The duck meat falls off the bone, and it had some additional seasoning on top of it. I loved it!
