Philz has finally made it to San Diego county by way of Encinitas, woohoo! Philz has long been a favorite of mine since the Bay Area. This place has some really fantastic coffee, headlined by the amazingly delicious iced mint mojito. That drink is legitimately delicious. Equally as delicious is the silken splendor, iced, sweet and creamy... soooo delicious. Pair any of these brews with some of their delicious Mediterranean avocado toast and you have yourself a dynamite combination. Overall, this place is a fantastic addition to Encinitas and a must try for any coffee lover. Philz Coffee is the perfect place to catchup with friends over a cup of coffee and pastries and some breakfast! As you walk in, the line is right in front of you, however once it gets crowded, people tend to forget to bend the line around the bench which makes it difficult to even enter the building. Since there isn't that much space vertically compared to horizontally, it can seem more crowded than it seems since the customer line is too close to the door. Once you get called, the employee will take your drink order underneath the menu sign and you go down the aisle to the cashier. SERVICE: 5/5 Amazing staff that actually cares about their customers. I enjoy having conversations with them since all of them have good attitudes which brings the overall atmosphere up. The cashier helped me pick out a vegan donut as I didn't know what donut was the best. But let me tell you, I stayed there for about two hours and a staff member held a tray of goods. At first, I didn't think much about it until they came over to each customer's table twice over the span of the time and offered free samples of their treats and blends of the month. Free cold brew? I think YES. It's not very common for a coffee place to be that accommodating and ensuring that each customer has a great experience. DRINK (Mint Mojito medium drink): 5/5 this is BOMB. I'm really digging the blend, especially since I'm one of those people with a sweeter tooth but still likes that good balance of bitterness. I have nothing bad to say about it but I would recommend this drink to a first comer. It's also very nice to look at. The staff member did a great job at presentation. DONUT (Blue Star(?) Donut): 4/5 I don't remember the exact name of this donut since I can't find it on the Philz Coffee donut but it was tasty. It has a nice texture and the moisture level was good. The only thing was that it as a bit pricy for the size of the donut. They did offer to heat up the donut but it took a while for some reason and my drink came out faster than the donut. Overall: 4.5/5 I enjoyed my experience here, I think the staff made the majority of the experience. I love that it has that "work/study for a couple hours" coffee shop feel. The drinks make me want to come back every day as long as my budget allows it. Philz Coffee is the place to be in San Diego! PROS: Fast service, friendly staff, vegan options!! Gone are the days when I would wander around Encinitas for a great little place to make a stop. However, this place is still a stop I make even though I no longer live in Encinitas, because it's still on the way to work. Sometimes I come here and meet up with my friend, do some work, hang out, and enjoy my mint mojito, extra creamy. Depending on the time of day, there's usually ample seating later in the day when the morning rush is over. On weekends, good luck with finding a seat or a parking spot, it's always packed here. Though, I'm convinced that most of the Encinitas residents don't work and they just spend all their time in various restaurants, because I can never find a seat or a parking spot anywhere in Encinitas, but I digress. Also, like any other Philz Coffee I go to, I bring my coffee mug here to get my coffee fill, for the price of a small. I love that Philz encourages us to reuse our mugs and cut back on the paper cups. Woohoo! Great to see Philz expanding outside the Bay Area. As someone who has been to Philz a lot, I spent a little time in line talking to people who had never been to a Philz. The common theme is that Philz is different from a lot of coffee shops you may have been to. For a quick reference: 1) they don't do espresso drinks: no lattes, shots, or cappuccino. Just coffee and tea. 2) Each cup is brewed on demand. There is really no "coffee of the day" that is brewed ahead of time and pulled from a thermos. 3) the "flavors" they show on their menu are mostly tasting notes like you would see for wine or whiskey: they don't put pineapple, berry, or cashews into the coffee. The only additives are chocolate (in the Mocha), and mint leaves or cardamom in a few (look for the green or yellow marks on the menu). 4) You select a coffee blend from the list and then tell the barista whether you want hot or iced, small or large and cream and/or sugar... and about how much (light, medium, creamy, sweet, etc.) They will make it how you request it and then call it out. Remember what you ordered :) 5) Wait in line, order your coffee, then wait for them to call yours. Try it out at the counter and they will adjust it if you need more sugar or cream. They want you to be happy! For newbies, they usually recommend "Tesora," which is a medium roast. I hear a lot of people order it "sweet and creamy." If you like your coffee dark, like at that huge chain with the green and white logo, "Ether" is at the top end of the spectrum. Many people drink that one black. Parking here is pretty limited, and the lines can be long, so plan ahead. It is a nice location with large windows and some outdoor seating. read more

If there is one good thing to come out of COVID, it's the increase use of mobile ordering. When the apps are developed well, they are very convenient when you want to get in and out quickly. Decided to visit Philz after a run and thanks to their Philz app, got to bypass a group of tourist who had never been to Philz and were asking a ton of questions to the gal up front. Although rare, there are off peak times where you can walk up and order your drink without large crowds. This wasn't one of them. I ordered an iced tantalizing Turkish coffee with a splash of almond milk. I always enjoy this blend when I visit. It's a full body coffee and it's pretty intense if you don't drink coffee often. This isn't my normal spot to grab a cup of Joe but it's nice to break from our usual Pannikin, Blue Bottle, Lofty or Better Buzz coffee runs. Staff is very friendly each time we come through here. The introduction of Philz Coffee to San Deigo has certainly been received on a positive note and for good reason too. In addition to their melee of pour over coffee offerings they also offer some nice grub and tasty baked goods. For my coffee, I had the Tesora, a medium roast with a subtle nuttiness and sweetness. They don't steam milk here, but the barista happily aggressively whipped the milk to give that nice foamy appeal. The Tesora was smooth at the beginning but did have a slight bitterness at the end. I quelled it with a touch of honey. In the end, it was a pretty good pour over. For eats I ordered the Hummus & Fresh Tomato Toast. It was nice but I was a little confused why it's called "toast" given the bread underneath was not toasted. I certainly would of liked it toasted to give the bread that nice crunchy appeal: a quality bread that deserved such treatment. The lack of toasting made the bread difficult to eat with the ingredients on top because of its chewy nature. It was hard to cut with the plastic knife and fork. The hummus that was spread onto the bread was good. It was a little heavy on the lemon but it had a good creamy consistency and spread nicely. The sliced tomatoes were thick and fresh, and I loved the slightly salty feta cheese on top that helped bring all the flavors together. I do recommend that they serve it on a flat plate for those who are dinning to eat. The container they served it in is great for a "to go" order but not helpful for dining in. I asked for a flat late after a few failed attempts in slicing the toast. The flat plate made the experience much easier. Service was up beat and I could tell that the employees were exciting about working there. The location has a small parking lot outside and plenty of street parking all around. Just so you know, they only offer pour overs here. Oh yes, you order at a counter as you walk in, then slice down and pass the the mouthwatering display of eats, and then you either order some eats or pay at the register down at the end of the line. Came here early Saturday morning around 730am. Small parking lot available and was able to snag a spot. There were about 4 people in front of me to order coffee.. The line moved very slow compared to surrounding coffee places. Once I was up at the counter.. I decided to try the medium blend silken splendor. My coffee took about 5-10 minutes. The barista was very friendly and asked if it tasted alright before I left. Very strong flavored coffee.. With hints of chocolate and butterscotch to sweeten it. Also ordered the avocado toast.. For $5.75. A great hearty piece of rustic crusty bread, avo, and hard boiled egg.. Mediterranean seasoning sprinkled on top. This was so filling.. I was able to save half for lunch. Indoor seating or it's only a couple blocks from the beach if you want to enjoy your coffee and snack outdoors. read more

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Interesting coffees, weird ordering system. I'd only been to Philz a couple of other times, once in SF and another time at the Huntington Beach location, both quite a while ago so I'd forgotten how their ordering system went. The whole ordering first and paying a cashier separately always seemed weird to me--I have to tell the cashier what I ordered after telling the barista my order--I find it unnecessarily redundant and annoying. Well whatever, their mint mojito latte is pretty good so every great once in a while I guess it's worth it. At this particular location we got seating outside because it was too crowded inside and we didn't end up hearing our orders come up and it turned out one of the orders was wrong, causing yet more delays. Bottom line: I don't get the mystique of Philz; I only went because it was the closest coffee place after our lunch. read more

After seeing many friends post about Philz Coffee on social media, I was excited to experience this popular coffee shop while up north. I was initially unsure of what to order since Philz offers unique blends instead of lattes or espresso, so my friend and I went with a mix that seemed more traditional. Two small coffees and a pastry somehow came out to $13 and change. The coffee had a strange flavor combination that my friend and I did not enjoy. I'm so happy another Philz made it way to SoCal! Just weeks before this place opened, I had tried Philz in Santa Monica and loved it. From the fresh ingredients to the personable baristas, Philz leaves you with a coffee experience unlike another places. This location is busy but very roomy. Theres many tables that are often occupied with people chatting or working. I want to come back here to try and study as there are parking spots available in front and outlets located at a large table. The drinks here are, of course, delicious. I ordered an Istanbul Treat with vanilla soy milk and medium honey. The barista recommended the Istanbul Treat as it is a mix of black and green tea and anise. Adding soy milk and honey made this taste more like a tea latte. I noticed the barista steamed the milk instead of just pouring it into the tea like every other coffee shop does. She even added a spring of mint on top, like the famous mint mojito. I really appreciated the extra effort! Overall, this place is great and I'm happy to see it in San Diego! I like this place, it was a pleasant find, moving from NorCal to SoCal I didn't get to experience the whole "Philz coffee" and their mint mojitos, I'm glad that I can taste it now. And to be honest the coffee is worth the hype. My SO got the mint mojito, house style meaning their regular cream and sugar etc, but with light ice. It's super creamy, with a slight sweetness, the foam on top is kind of like the boba foam but that's because we don't mix it all the way. I got the soulmate, typically it's made with cream and sugar, but I got it without cream and sugar, and I personally like it a lot better. Gives a huge energy boost since it's jam packed with caffeine, but if you get it with cream and sugar, it apparently tastes like Thai tea. This review is long overdue. I went here for the soft opening 2 years ago, and then just this past weekend in March 2019. Not a whole lot has really changed since then and it's as good as Philz gets. One star off only because on my most recent visit, there were only 2 baristas working. That meant a rather long wait time, even though I was first in line. Tatiana (hopefully that's the right spelling) matched my enthusiasm and made me the perfect cup of Philtered Soul. Mint Mojito might be the fan favorite at Philz, but Philtered Soul is my go to drink when I'm looking for a hot cup of coffee. Philz also adds creamer and sweetener behind the counter to match your taste which is really nice. Every cup at Philz is made to order which sets them apart from a lot of other coffee shop. Although I did not try the food, there was a great selection for those looking to eat. Their pastries are from Nutmeg, a local bakery in San Diego. This Philz is located on the intersection of J and Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas. It's really easy to find and the ambiance inside is on point. If you rather be outside, you can go on a nice jog along Highway 101 to this location, sit outside, or take a stroll to the beach (that's what I did). And for those wondering when the La Jolla location will open, I was told sometime in August. Can't wait! Take my money Philz!! read more

I used to love Philz and I really wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt... but we're breaking up. Last two experiences included rude service, inefficient systems, and extraordinarily long wait times (30+ min). I understand given the current climate that your staff may be more stressed out - but after walking down the street to Starbucks and having a great experience and greeted by kind staff, and having my coffee 60 seconds later, I had to write this review to hopefully save someone else from having a bad experience at Philz. I love me a latté, but I have to say the Tesora done Philz way was outstanding. Take a moment to explore the menu before ordering or going in so you know what you're looking at. It was my first time here and upon seeing the menu I felt a little intimidated. It's not your typical coffee shop menu where you can just get your typical latte. They had all these very unique drinks which seemed a little overwhelming since I had never been here and had no idea where to even start. I figured I would ask what to get as someone who likes Vanilla lattes and the guy behind the counter was very nice and offered a suggestion of Philtered Soul, so that's what I ordered. After ordering you head down to the cashier to let them know what you ordered and pay. I kind of thought it was weird how the whole system worked After getting my drink the barista told me to let him know if I wanted it any sweeter which I didn't but I appreciated him asking. TL;DR: Waited an HOUR for my drinks and then they only gave me half of my order. There wasn't much of a line when I placed my order so I was surprised when 30 minutes had gone by and I still hadn't received my drinks. I asked the staff what was going on and they said they had accidentally lost the label for my order and would give me the drinks for free as an apology. However, another 30 minutes went by before they were able to give me my order and they got it completely wrong. I ordered 2 medium drinks and they only gave me 1 small drink after that long hour of waiting. I've been to a bunch of other Philz and had a great experience there. I think this is a great hangout place and the coffee is pretty darn good to boot. the staff are all friendly and inviting, which is important to me. I am not a fan of their app, but if you like to order your drink before you get there so it is ready and waiting you may like it. I prefer the personal interaction, which is why I never use self checkout at a store. Parking is tight, but I'm sure you can find something not to far away. the only thing I'm not a fan of, is they make the cold drinks in the same cups they serve the hot drinks in. Ok, having owned a coffee shop in the past and being an avid coffee snob, I have to say that Philz has got a winning formula. I do not live close by, in fact it's about 30 minutes with good traffic, but I find myself at Philz way more than I would have expected. I have been here many times and they always deliver a good experience. I like the iced mint mohito. Awesome coffee shop. Used to go to Philz when I lived in LA, so I was so happy to see a location in North SD County! It's been a little crowded every time I've gone, but I've always been able to find a seat. I actually really like the busy energy of the shop; it makes it feel like a real community gathering place! Their coffee is what shines the most, so don't feel the need to go overboard on sugar and sweeteners. An iced Ecstatic is a classic fave for me. I'm slightly allergic to mint, so this next drink is not for me, but everyone I know is OBSESSED with the Mint Mojito. Just be aware that they don't serve espresso drinks, so ordering a latte, Americano, cappuccino, etc. won't work. Their menu is strictly coffee-based and can be a little confusing to a non-connoisseur.
