I was excited to try this donut spot after reading so many glowing reviews, but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. The service was friendly and efficient which I appreciated. However, $17 for a half dozen felt a bit steep, and I was expecting something truly special for that price. The donuts themselves were just okay. They had a slightly greasy aftertaste and the texture leaned more toward dry and bready rather than the moist, rich "eggy" style I prefer. You could drive by this place 100 times and not notice it, but once you go in and have one of their donuts you'll never drive by it without thinking about it ever again. Limited parking, but if you want it, you'll find it. Incredible selection of every kind of donut From cake to glazed to cinnamon rolls and everything's fantastic. It's the one place. I'm really gonna miss when I leave. Run by a mom and pop who are there probably at 4 AM getting ready for a 6 AM opening and then close around noon when everything's gone. While I may not know why that happens, I can tell you that donuts sure seem like a great option when you find yourself in this predicament! The owners of "Leucadia Donut Shoppe" have been fulfilling these needs for North County San Diegans for more than 30 years. I heard that this husband and wife team put their kids through college one at a time, so I had to ask them if this local legend is accurate. The husband laughed, told me that it is true, but also confided that the donut gravy train wasn't entirely sufficient and needed to be supplemented by student loans. I was also curious about how the interior walls came to be covered by the photos of so many different patrons. He explained that initially they placed a few family pics on the wall and found that customers wanted to get in on the action themselves (which led to the bumper sticker contributions that now entirely cover their front windows). If you choose to visit while in search of a sugar fix, I think you'll find this to be one of the friendliest places to enjoy a donut. A little advice though: bring cash (that's all they accept) and get here as early as you can. While their advertised closing time is 1:00, on the day we visited most of the donuts had been claimed by 9:00 (and by 10:00 they were down to their last dozen). If you find yourself unable to finish everything, not to worry. Even the birds are friendly here and they'd be more than happy to assist you in finishing whatever you've ordered. First time in decades going into a donut shop to buy a dozen for a thank you offering to a medical staff. Picked Leucadia Donut Shoppe because of the comments on yelp, the old school feel, opened early and it is local. It did not disappoint. Got a nice selection of bear claws, buttermilks, cakes, fills etc. Owner/operators were great, helpful and friendly. Coffee black was very good and a baker's dozen thrown in. Old school donuts just a block away from the beach. Came here just after 5am and you could smell the sugar from down the street. So many donuts to choose from! There were a few locals shooting the shit with the fun owners. I was still half asleep so took a few donuts for later so they could be enjoyed at the beach. I love yeast-raised donuts because they tend to be lighter. These donuts are on the more dense side and when I held one in my hand it felt like it weighed two pounds. I know most love more, bigger everything, and all that but I actually prefer my donuts to be lighter. Next time I think I'll stick to some donut holes. Leucadia Donut Shoppe is one of the funky businesses at the soul of the city. The family owned small business resides in a tiny mason building with a huge mural on the west wall. This business is a treasure that is loved by the locals who flock here, cash in hand to purchase their freshly made daily bounty. Donut shoppes have been disappearing along the coast and Solana Beach donuts was replaced by a hipster cafe. The Encinitas Donuts location is now a hair salon, and it is sad to see them disappear. I seldom eat donuts, and I wish I liked them more so that I could send more love to this special business. My only request would be for Almond bear claws instead of apple ones. read more

It's a smallish stand alone location along 101. If you blink, you'll miss it. There are a few parking spots right out front along side a decent sized patio to enjoy their goodies. The front is kinda suspect but very fun. Can't see inside the windows because they're covered with stickers. Take a step inside and you be hit with the aroma of fresh baked goodness. The counter display is large with a variety of donuts to choose from. I made it easy on myself and simply asked them for 5 dozen to go that I'd pick up the next morning. Easy peasy! When I arrived the next morning, my order was boxed, sealed and ready to go! Walked in, walked out and headed to my meeting with treats for the team. Definitely not a bougie spot for donuts. This is my favorite donut shop. I live 15 driving minutes away, and it is often hard to find a place to park, but the donuts are the best around and the owners are super friendly and helpful. There are several donut shops closer to me, but their donuts just aren't as good. Like all donut shops, you need to get there early in the day if you want your first choice, because it was probably everyone else's first choice, too. There's a donut shop a few miles farther south that makes donuts to order. I've tried those a few times, but I really like these better. Miraculously, I've managed to lose weight in the last year despite regular trips to Leucadia Donuts. I think it's because I have somehow found the discipline not to eat an entire donut. These are so delicious that the only way to accomplish that is to cut the donut into the piece you are going to eat and the piece you are not going to eat, and then discard the piece you are not going to eat before you take a bite. read more

I was in town for a bachelorette party and there were actually multiple trips to the Leucadia Donut Shoppe during our weekend! One was as part of a scavenger hunt, we had to go take a picture by the beautiful mural on the outside of the shop. The other was to pick up donuts to have for breakfast one morning! They have a wide variety of different donut flavors to choose from. Our group got a couple boxes, so we got to try several of the flavors! My mother in law picked up a dozen assorted donuts at this shop. The donuts selected were glaze, sprinkles, chocolate, and a random cake donut with coconut shaving. When I opened the box, the glaze donut was calling my name. I grabbed one and nuked it for 10 seconds since I wanted that fresh, warm taste. When I cut into the donut with my fork, the donut was very soft and moist. I tasted a piece and the donut was so light and fluffy! I was so shocked that the donut did not taste heavy and the glaze was not thick or super sweet. The donut was a pretty good sized shape and I didn't feel full or gross afterwards, especially after eating a sweet breakfast. In fact, after eating a donut, I wanted another but had to limit myself.
