Can we give this place 1000000/10?! Celebrated our wedding anniversary here on a weekend, so you could imagine how crazy the line is! Came in and the line was already outside, thankfully we had reservation. Sat down after few minutes, we then received some bread and water to start with. Everything looks delicious so we were a bit overwhelmed, although their menu selection is not that long. We started with thick bacon with Caesar salad and Shrimp cocktail. And for drinks we had wine and Negroni. For main we got their Porterhouse with sides of creamed spinach, mushroom, and their famous German Fried Potatoes. Oooff! By this time we barely ate because we were already getting full. The flavor was amazing and complemented each sides with it. It was a great combination. And for dessert I was the only one who ordered as my husband was already full. I got apple strudel, they served it with vanilla ice cream and homemade cream on the side. Been here before for the steak but this time I came for the burger which is only served during lunch time and it was amazing! Highly recommend. Got it with cheese, bacon and side of fries. Loved it so much was considering returning this week. Next time I'll opt out of the complimentary bread/butter so I can finish my meal. Got a couple of Luger Lagers to complete the meal and was so full and happy. Solo lunch and I got the perfect little corner with a view of the restaurant. I just walked in and they happen to have availability but when I came the first time I did have a reservation. Upon entry they were a little uptight but I didn't let that affect my experience. They also charged my phone while I was there so that was appreciated. I liked the bacon a lot. It was very smoky. The bleu cheese in the salad was good too. For entrees, we ordered medium rare steak for 2 (porterhouse cut) and medium rare ribeye for 2 with large fries. Our favorite was the porterhouse cut. The filet migon on the porterhouse was definitely very tender. Fries tasted similar to five guys. Dessert, we order chocolate mousse cake came with whipped cream Chocolate was rich and balanced with the cream Overall, it was nice to try once but probably will not come back for the steak. Steaks were all unevenly cooked not sure if that was the same cooking method back then but modern steakhouses let their meat rest before cutting into it, otherwise you get well done on the outside and then rare on the inside (like we see here). In all honesty, I was not very happy with my experience at Peter Luger. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday. I've seen some great reviews online and was excited to take her to a fancy steakhouse. Unfortunately, we were let down at every turn. The ambiance isn't the best. The place itself is historic, but the lights are on very bright and the tables are kind of just cluttered around. Our tables were right by the hooks, which was a bit annoying since other guests were hanging their coats on right behind us. The food was a 7/10 at best. I've had better steaks at much cheaper steak houses. We got a medium rare rib steak that was slightly overcooked. The steak was super oily and slightly rubbery. We also got some sides (spinach and potatoes) both of which I felt I could make at home. The service wasn't as expected either. They were nice but also not the most hospitable. It was a cold winter day so I understand not being the happiest at work, but it just didn't feel as friendly as I'd expect at any restaurant. When we were eating our bread, a waiter walked by and said "I wouldn't eat much bread if I were you" then later came back and said "I told you so" in a somewhat rude way when we didn't finish our sides all the way. Hmm I'm stumped. Not the experience I was expecting or hoping for after hearing so much praise for this place on tv over the years. My husband and I came to NY specifically to eat at this steakhouse. We started with the shrimp cocktail which were huge, cold/refreshing, and served with an excellent cocktail sauce! For our entree, we ordered the steak for two with Luger's potatoes and creamed spinach. The steak was served medium-rare on a sizzling platter, already sliced and still cooking in its own juices. The potatoes were great and reminded me of home fries. The "creamed" spinach was the most bland and uncreamy kind I've ever had! It was disappointing. This place has what they call "silver service" where the waiter will transfer the food from the platter onto your plate. I understand this concept is supposed to be formal & fancy, but it just feels outdated and parental, like a mother feeding her child. I am an adult and would prefer to choose my own slice of steak (and sides too for that matter!). This part was a big turn off for me. Our meal also came with their very own Peter Luger's steakhouse sauce. I was excited for this as I love sauces and dipping anything in anything...but it was shockingly bad!! Came in on a holiday for lunch to try the NYC famous burger and it did not disappoint. What a fabulous establishment in an old school steak house ambience. In this unpretentious surrounding is a very special and delicious dining experience. To start, being seated took almost as long as the dinner, even though we had a reservation. Seems like they do 'batch' reservations so everyone arrives at the same time. Things seemed mismanaged and the staff seemed a bit...unprofessional. Perhaps it was an off day, but our waiter was absolutely inattentive, unfriendly, and not worth the $260 price tag for two drinks, a steak, and some fries. We even needed to ask other waiters to fill our water glasses -- and they were kinder and friendlier -- perhaps we were just unlucky. Food wise, the steak was OK. The fries were plentiful, as they should be, for $18. The drinks were mediocre. The free bread rolls were possibly the best part of the meal (or the part I am least bitter about). It's not for the faint of heart, adding photos of the medium rare steak, and the entire meal. I'll also add - the table wasn't clean which was off-putting for a 'white table cloth' establishment. Truly a transcendent experience for anyone who values steak, tradition and quality. Peter Luger has been around for over 135 years and, to nobody's surprise, for good reason. The steak is just mind-bogglingly good. I've had a dry aged steak or two, but this was the most tender steak I've ever had in my life. A proper medium rare cook meant the steak literally dissolved in my mouth. The kind of steak that the back of a butterknife cuts through like warm butter. Also, the burger has no business being as delicious as it is. My friend got one and had about two to three tablespoons of straight meat juice on his plate after he finished devouring his burger. If you're strapped for cash (which, if that's the case, don't eat steak in NYC), the burger is an excellent option. The service was also phenomenal. It wasn't until after I dined at Peter Luger that I learned that the staff are supposedly kind of a**holes, which frankly couldn't have been further from the truth. They were kind and frank and respectful and nothing more. This establishment had been on my bucket list for years, and I can confidently say that it exceeded my expectations in every way. Came back for the first time in years and was afraid it would not be as good as I remembered and I am happy to report I was wrong. Very very wrong. This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of NYC. This place deserves all of the hype it gets because the food is sensational. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it worth it. ABSOLUTELY. I wouldn't recommend going every week, but definitely a great place to treat yourself for a special occasion or just because you can. The staff is friendly and all male (no idea why, just is) and the restaurant has an old tavern feel with lots of wood and plenty of seating though you definitely need a reservation. The portions are big and the food comes out at a good pace. They bring 3 types of rolls to the table along with butter and their Peter Luger sauce (tastes similar to cocktail sauce to me but is brown). We were a group of two and they brought us 6 rolls, 2 of each kind. Right off the bat this is a great start! One roll was a regular fluffy dinner roll, the other was a long caraway seed roll and lastly a round onion roll. If you are big eaters, ordering two entrees and two sides should be more than enough food, I think most people would be okay with 2 entrees and 1 side or 1 entree and 2 sides. We went with the ribeye for one (20oz, I like it better than the single steak), the lamb chops (2 per order), the special fried german potatoes and broccoli. The steak was phenomenal, they recommend medium rare and the spoon the jus over the steak on a sizzling hot plate tableside before they serve it to you. What is not to love!? The steak is tender with a crispy outside and is simply delectable. The lamb though might be the unsung hero. It is so ridiculously good, lots of flavor and similar to the steak, they spoon the jus over the thick chops so it sizzles before you eat it. I know they are famous for steak, but you really need to get the lamb too. Onto the sides, the german potatoes were superb (shocker given that everything we have eaten here has been out of this world good). They are soft with a crispy top, are nicely seasoned and have sauteed onion inside, think of it like elevated hash browns. Even the broccoli here is outstanding. Broccoli honestly has no business being this good. I don't know if they cook it in tons of butter or what but it is the best broccoli I have had. It doesn't look like much when they bring it to you, you'd think it was just boring fresh steamed broccoli, but don't be fooled. They are known for their schlag, but I am not a dessert person (we had it the last time we went and I can confirm it is very good, basically the best whipped cream you've ever had) and we were so full there was no way we had room for dessert. The total bill was a little over $200, but having spent alot of money on dinners in NYC, I can assure you this was worth every penny. My goal is to come here at least once a year. read more

I've been here before for the steak (highly recommend) but came this time to try the burger and let me tell you--it rivals the steak for deliciousness. It didn't need anything else to be honest--it was juicy and perfectly seasoned and one of the best burgers I have ever had. I would put this on the same level as the Minetta's burger--one of the best in the city. Absolutely delicious and worth every penny! We also got the steak sandwich...it was fine. It may have been better if it wasn't sitting on the same table with the burger--kind of hard to compare or compete with that! That's the only reason I left off a star...you shouldn't be "fine" as a menu item at a place like Peter Luger, where everything else is top tier. The place itself is no frills, no tablecloths and simple plate ware with ships. An expensive steak joint with a no nonsense and no high end feel to it for the perfect Brooklyn steakhouse experience. My favorite part of this place are the waitstaff: phenomenal at what they do and completely professional but not nice. They're all your typical New Yorkers and they represent the place perfectly: kind, not nice. Ask them what they recommend and they'll shrug and grumble something about what they get " not that it matters" and walk off. The Unacceptable: At the end of the meal, we told our server it was a birthday and asked if they could do anything special for dessert. He said there was a "special birthday cake" he could bring out. What arrived was a bowl of whipped cream with a candle stuck in it. No cake, no pastry, just whipped cream. Our friend was gracious, but insulted. The entire table was stunned and embarrassed. This table was made of all first responders in the healthcare system. For a restaurant with this name and price point, serving a bowl of whipped cream as a "birthday cake" to our friend celebrating a milestone feels dismissive and tone-deaf. It single-handedly soured the experience and left the entire table with a poor impression of this Brooklyn establishment. Unless you have a Luger's house account charge card. I'm one of those; had it for over 30 years. Be careful don't forget about this - bring CASH. I'd love to tell you everything is excellent, but I've always ended up ordering the same things, never did a deep dive on the menu. STEAKS. Important advice, if you go solo, don't get the single steak, order the steak for two it will cook to your temperature better, the single is too thin. You're going to love the dry-aged (they age in their own butcher shop in the basement - some creepy stories down there over the years for sure), it's a Porterhouse cut with both Filet Mignon and New York Strip, in an extra thick-cut steak. So, take the rest home for sandwiches and skip the steak for one. SIDES. Recommend several: Shrimp Cocktail they are giant - add side of extra-hot horseradish. Sliced tomato and onion (goes great with the Peter Luger Steak Sauce). Thick cut bacon, also great with the sauce. My last trip, for the first time ever I went with a Caesar Salad which was excellent. If you're looking for a rich, creamy, cheesy Creamed Spinach, you'll probably want to pass on their version - it's more "spinachy". Lyonnaise Potatoes are superb. DESSERT. I've only had one. When I told my dad I was going here for my partner's birthday, he responded with "Are you getting the steak for two?", the same order he got years ago when he was also living in NYC in his 20's. The last time i was in this joint, i was taking the men from Fort Pitt up to training at Randall Island. We were coming back to the firehouse and the men were caterwauling they wanted to eat here. They were like kids; i gave in. We arrive, get our seats, and a bunch of staff chiefs walk in.. .." Cap, we have to leave!". Too late jerkoffs.... enjoy your meal Then there was today.. . This place never disappoints. I haven't been back at Peter Luger Steakhouse in a while, so glad I was able to get a reservation for Valentine's Day dinner with my husband. This place has a classic old school ambiance. Everything from the service to food was phenomenal. We both had a glass of Pinot Noir, caesar salad, steak for two, creamed spinach, and hot fudge sundae. The portions were very generous, the steak was tender and juicy, melts in your mouth, and the sundae was also very delicious. Would like to try the burger and pecan pie next time. It is a cash only spot, but they also take debit card. I definitely won't wait too long on coming back again. Always a wonderful experience. read more

Wow, what a memorable experience! I've been wanting to visit for a while, and Peter Luger did not disappoint! I made a reservation ahead of time, but there was still about a thirty minute wait when I arrived. This was understandable, as the restaurant was absolutely packed. The atmosphere was super lively, with every single table and every single seat at the bar full. Once my party got seated, we immediately ordered, and the food arrived after a short wait. Every dish was just incredible. The Caesar salad was seasoned well and full of creamy sauce. I ordered the steak for two rare, and this was the best steak I've ever had. It was tender and mouthwatering. Every bite melted in my mouth and was so rich. I honestly could have done without the creamed spinach and fried potatoes because the steak was perfect on its own. For dessert, the hot fudge sundae was incredible. The whipped cream balanced well with the ice cream and wrapped up my meal nicely. The steak alone made my visit completely worth it, and all the other dishes were divine as well. read more

Short version: Ignore any naysayers, this is one of the best steakhouses in the entire city. Easily one of the best steaks I've ever had anywhere in town - better even than Gallagher's, Delmonico's or other ultra-famous establishments in New York. Excellent staff as well. Longer version: Came here yesterday after about half a decade of wanting to try the place out, given its history and hype - didn't quite have a good enough occasion for it until now though (especially given the price point). Luckily, some family were visiting and wanted to have a nice lunch together, and we snagged a reservation for 4. Easily worth the wait and super glad I finally went. Had to book a table at least 1 week in advance for a meal at 1:15 pm, prime-time lunch hour. Got there at 1:13 pm and told the floor manager we had a reservation; they had us wait for just a few minutes before seating us. A few tourists tried their best to wheedle their way into the restaurant without a reservation, but this is simply not a place you can "squeeze into"; it's popular and it's proudly old-school cool - from the decor to the service, to the menu. Our server quickly came over once we were seated and took excellent care of us for our entire meal - the gentleman's name is Jarek, and he treated us right from start to finish. Immediately took a shine to us when we asked where he was from / took a second to connect with him a tiny bit, and gave us very straightforward tips on what to order based on our preferences for meat and sides. Super glad we got to have him as our point of reference for the whole experience. We ordered two slabs of their famous bacon (predictably great), a side of cream spinach (I actually don't even like spinach, but this stuff was quite tasty), and of course a couple of steaks - my dad and I split a medium-rare porterhouse for two, the ladies had a NY strip. I've been lucky enough to have some very good steaks in my time, I must say; but this was one of the very best. We didn't even dream of using the steak sauce they provide on the side - it would've been a waste. Every bite of that steak, from start to finish, was dreamy. Even now if I close my eyes and picture the overpowering aroma of that first slice of prime USDA meat in front of me, I get chills. Just perfect, nothing more I could possibly want from a steak - cooked perfectly, seasoned perfectly (presumably basted in butter, salt etc.), and portioned perfectly for two people. Felt like Scooby Doo with a bucket full of Scooby snacks. Just heavenly. My dad ordered a very nice bottle of French red wine to go with the meal, and it was an excellent accompaniment - a smooth taste that didn't overpower / clash with the steak. After finishing our entree and chatting with our server Jarek a bit more, we'd digested just enough of our lunch to peek at the Dessert menu - and ended up ordering a slice of their Apple Strudel. It comes with an almost comically large amount of homemade whipped cream (schlag) that tastes excellent, but the strudel especially was just as delicious as anything else we'd had. Now, none of this comes cheap - for a nice lunch for 4 (including a good bottle of 2019 French wine) we ended up spending about $500 with a nice tip included. So, sadly, I won't get to come back here every week until I win the lottery or what have you - but it sure is a great spot to stop by for a fancy occasion. I finally had the opportunity to dine at the legendary Peter Luger Steak House, and I'm pleased to say it exceeded my expectations. I ordered the medium Porterhouse for two, which was perfectly cooked and richly flavorful. The accompanying potatoes were exceptional--crispy, savory, and truly unforgettable. To complement the meal, I chose a classic dirty martini, which paired beautifully with the steak. The overall experience was nothing short of exceptional. Visiting Peter Luger has long been on my culinary bucket list, and I'm thrilled to say it lived up to its iconic reputation. It was a vibe. I remember coming here several years ago and hating how they would seat you depending on how you were dressed. I would look around to see what all the people were ordering. It seemed to me in the section where everyone was dressed like working class, they ordered the big meals, so why sort, if the people are spending money. If anything sort based on money spent. But then, once I was seated, I was always fortunate to have an excellent server, and what I came for... still the best steak in New York. Their creamy spinach is unmatched. I go to great places for steak, but Peter Luger is still the standard. I came back last nite, and for the first time, the energy from the beginning was a ton better, and the steak, yet again, did not disappoint... still the best in The City. read more

Finally made it to the original Peter Luger's in Brooklyn, the steakhouse so many call a New York institution. It was great to experience it for myself, though the flavors leaned in a direction that didn't quite match my personal taste. The dry-aged steak carried that signature funk longtime fans rave about, but for me it felt more subdued than bold. I tend to prefer the juicier, fresher beef flavor. The Rib steak was a bit veiny. The lamb loin also arrived thinner and more cooked through than I'd hoped, so it didn't get its moment to shine. The thick cut bacon was outstanding, the Caesar salad perfectly balanced, and the steak sauce easily the best I've ever had. Service was good. There's a parking lot about half a block away. There's also a great bar to grab a drink while you wait. Inside, the look is unapologetically old-school with wood paneled walls, heavy wooden tables. Even the check comes handwritten. Just a heads up, it's cash or debit card only. I'm glad to have finally checked this classic off my list. While the steakhouse style may not be for everyone, the experience and atmosphere alone make it a worthwhile visit. read more
