I try never to compare a place to another when reviewing, but it's essentially impossible not to evaluate Wolfgang's alongside Peter Luger's. By now, I'm sure you know the history. Wolfgang Zwiener left his position as the headwaiter at Peter Luger to found his namesake restaurant in 2004, basing the place (and some say improving) on the famed Brooklyn steakhouse's core principles. For better and for worse, there are similarities and differences between the two steakhouses. I'm going to give you three of each, because I don't have all day: Just Like Luger's: 1. The steak is why you're here. Although, the porterhouse for 13 is too much for 13 people (especially if you also get a few lamb chops, all the sides, and starters...which you should because they're delicious). You'll eat until you might actually vomit, and then you'll still need a doggie bag full of meat that you'll probably give to a random bartender later in the evening because he became your new best friend. 2. It's too expensive. You're going to drop substantially more on this meal than anyone probably should on one evening. But if you like steak, whiskey, red wine, and celebrating in a manly manner, it's a good choice. 3. The service is the right kind of rude, with plenty of good humor to offset it as long as you're not uptight. For example, if you ask for a group photo of your giant party of dudes, you'll get more than a few selfies of your waiter tossed into the mix. Unlike Luger's: 1. It's in Manhattan, instead of Brooklyn. Automatically a downgrade. 2. They take credit cards. Huge upgrade. 3. They will just chop up the onions, tomatoes, shrimp cocktail, and bacon and throw them all in one big salad if you can't be bothered to eat them separately. I like it. Upgrade. Especially since I find the tomatoes and onion to be a waste, generally. The strange thing is that after many visits to both over the last couple decades, Wolfgang's has been more consistent, and honestly, better overall. Nowadays, when I'm getting a bunch of guys together, I usually roll with Wolfgang's. read more

I had a visitor in town who wanted to have steak, so I booked this flagship location on Park Ave, hoping for a nice dining experience. I'd been to this location years ago and it wasn't particularly memorable, but my client was keen to try it. Unfortunately, the porterhouse we ordered was cooked very unevenly and we weren't impressed at all. The mashed potatoes were tasty, though. The service was also slow and disconnected. One staff said they'd bring the dessert menu, but then, a while later, our server brought our check before we even had a chance to look at dessert options. Like other popular steakhouses, the prices are not cheap but the good quality justifies them. We had their dry aged porterhouse which they sizzle in butter. The meat is very juicy and melts in your mouth. We shared a few sides as well, but they were nothing special. The meat is why everyone comes here. This Park Avenue location is their original location, and the decor here is a bit weird. The place has these very low cobblestone ceilings. There are newer and more modern looking steakhouses, but Wolfgang delivers a solid old school steakhouse experience. read more

We got porterhouse for three, a side of mashed potatoes, and a vegetable platter. Everything tasted the way you wanted it to taste. For dessert, we shared a hot fudge sundae with whipped cream and nuts. Service was attentive, all the guys taking care of us were great, and added to the experience. I usually love Wolfgang's, but this location didn't quite live up to my past experiences. Maybe they were having an off day, since we came in for a late lunch on a Saturday. I started with an Old Fashioned that, unfortunately, was pretty poorly made. There were a few of us, so we shared several dishes. The bacon, wedge salad, and Caesar salads were all good, especially the wedge salad, which was probably the standout of the meal. We ordered the Cajun tomahawk to share, but it was a bit overcooked and lacked flavor. The German potatoes and creamed spinach on the side were both solid. Service was fine, not bad, but nothing memorable either. Overall, I'd give this visit a 3.5. Got the porterhouse steak for 2 ~$70 per person was a bit pricey but the portion size is actually so generous and I cannot emphasize how perfectly cooked and flavorful and juicy it was. The Tomahawk steak was easily the star of the meal -- incredibly tender, buttery, and flavorful. It practically melted in the mouth and had that perfect char on the outside. Went to the Broadway location with a party of 10 on Saturday night. The restaurant was clean and looked beautiful. Lots of entrees and sides ordered. thought prices were a little heavy and there were only a handful of seafood options for entrees. the $20 sides and $17 baked potato seemed excessive in price. The Lobster Mac did have large chunks of lobster but was watery instead or the creamy texture you seek when ordering this. My mozzarella and tomato salad had only two slices of tomato and very little balsamic. I was really disappointed with my choices. I tried my friend's crab cake and that was a winning appetizer. Everyone who ordered steak said their steaks arrived perfectly which is important at a steakhouse. Personal pet piece of mine is when sodas are served in tiny miniature glass bottles. We have been here on several occasions, and it's always a great night out. The dining room looks like it's located in a subway station, and it's a loud, busy, exciting room. Celebrated my 40th Birthday at Wolfgang's. I would say I had a so-so experience. I had a 8:30PM reservation, but when I arrived I was told it was going to be a wait time. I wound up waiting about 20 minutes or so. Which was a little annoying and to further frustrate things was it's very loud there, which is almost standard at most NYC steakhouses, but the manager told the hostess that the table was ready, but since she was so busy applying lipstick and chatting with the other hostess, I had to stand there and wait even longer, when it wasn't necessary. Now, onto to the good part. After we were seated we seemingly got two servers because it was two different guys coming over to assist. They were extremely friendly and cordial. I did not want steak, but did end up having some of the Porterhouse steak, which was pretty good, but I actually was in the mood for Salmon. The Salmon was a little bland, but more importantly, didn't come with any accompaniments. I've been to many steakhouses which provided vegetables, at the minimum with it. I would have still ordered spinach and mashed potatoes but still found it awkward for nothing to come on the player aside from lemon. I know several of my criticisms make it seem like I had a bad experience, but overall I would say it was good. I appreciated the severs constantly checking on the table and singing Happy Birthday. A bit disappointing. Although this has been one of my favorite places to go, I have to admit that I was a little disappointed by the service at the bar. My aunt simply asked if they could warm up the bread and was told no that's the way it comes out... Cold. I was actually shocked. I've been to this place so many times and I've not had a bad experience until today, but I think Larry could've handled that situation a lot differently. The cocktails were good although I was kind of surprised didn't ask if I wanted blue cheese stuffed olives with my dirty martini. The crabcake and the lobster mac & cheese was so so. Came in a large group of 17, so got to try quite a few things. Overall, the steak was worth the price although the sides and desserts were more lackluster. Started off with complimentary bread and butter which were standard too. I got the porterhouse for 3, medium rare, and it was indeed cooked medium rare. The sear was nicely seasoned but still tender in the middle, and I appreciated their slightly sweet tomato sauce that are bottled. I didn't realize porterhouse comes with both filet and sirloin pieces before. I got a bottle of Australian Shiraz ($70ish) that I'd get again. Tried the Brussel sprouts (good), mash potatoes (I thought okay, but others thought it tasted like from a box), sauteed spinach (not as creamy and flavorful as others like Smith and Wollensky), and onion rings (alright). None of the desserts are housemade and most come with a huge amount of homemade whip cream. The pecan pie was the best of what we got. I liked the accompaniments that came with it, good old-school creamed spinach without the addition of something trendy like truffle oil. The Caesar salad was tasty but lacked anchovies. It was actually cooked well (perfect medium rare), although too much butter for my liking. Nice dry aged flavor. It was super rich likely due to the butter and my friend & I were drinking a lot of water after. Canadian bacon appetizer was underwhelming. Lugers is significantly better, and so this is a hard pass for me. Ordered brussel sprouts and fries for sides, and thought that both were really good. I felt that the prices were reasonable for a NY steakhouse. Only let down was the service. Definitely got a feeling that they were trying to rush us through. We came with a party of 13 and spent over $1,000, which we didn't mind, but the overall experience was terrible. The waiter lacked patience, making us feel like we were at a military base--definitely not the kind of experience we were hoping for. We wanted to order individual meals, but the waiter insisted on family-style dining, which we didn't like. The sides were small and limited, leaving us unsatisfied. The bread and butter were served cold. When we asked for a salad, we were told they don't have any. We also requested soda with no ice, but it was served with ice anyway. When we politely reminded the waiter about our request, he replied, "Well, it's going to be hot," and left the glass with iced soda. Overall, a very unpleasant dining experience. Came to Wolfgang's on a Monday night at 7:30 as part of a bday group of 5. After being seated, we were presented with the drink menus and offered some table bread while the guest of honor mulled over the wine list. Round 1 - Malbec and a dozen oysters. The oysters were fresh and came out with a heaping bowl of horseradish, which really cleared the nostrils lol. For Round 2, we opted to go family style with the porterhouse for 4 ( = 2 orders) and sides of brussels, asparagus, and mashed potatoes. When we were asked how the steaks should be cooked, we said medium rare for both. Oh man...if what we got initially was 'medium rare' (i.e., mostly raw)...ordering 'rare' would involve no cooking at all. Both steaks arrived practically still mooing. After a couple of us got through the first couple bites, group consensus was to ask if they could be thrown back on the grill/oven for a bit more. Eventually the steaks came back and were a bit more palatable/safe, but...I guess I was just expecting a bit more for a reputable steak house. The sides, and service, btw - were fine. For dessert, the choice was the chocolate mousse cake, accompanied by their homemade whipped cream. Actually pretty darn yummy - I'm normally ambivalent about chocolate mousse cakes, but really enjoyed this one; and who doesn't love whipped cream? All in all...this was a rather disappointing outing, celebrations aside. Having been to Wolfgang's spot at the Borgata, I had much higher expectations for the Park Ave location. If you're going to charge $80+ for a steak...you would have thought they'd be a bit more competent in knowing how to cook, especially to the popular temperature of medium rare. You like New York Steakhouses? If you do, this should be on your 'must do' list. The interior harkens to the days of the classic New York subway station. While it can be noisy when it's full, it's like stepping back in time when you enter here...this is the old New York vibe. The food is solid, not over the top...it's very good..but it's the ambience, the service and the people that draws you to this place. While the steaks are very good..what really separates this place from the others is the burger...yes, you heard that right...the burger and it is great. It's mixed on site that day and is probably the best you will have in New York if you like steakhouse burgers...which I do. The ground dry-aged prime sirloin gives it a perfect texture and flavor. This burger soars compared to other burgers in NYC....it's a must try...however, it's only on the lunch menu so call ahead to see if then can put one (or more) aside for you for dinner. The Park Avenue location is the original Wolfgang's and the owner was a former waiter at Peter Lugers until he struck out on his own...he gets it. There are many Wolfgangs now across the globe but this is the one you want to go to....don't tempt fate...go here for the true experience. It was my big bros birthday, so we got the royal treatment. Walking into Wolfgang's with him felt like walking into the strip club with James Harden right after a first-round playoff exit. The whole staff coming up to him dapping him up, with all the restaurant patrons whispering amongst themselves trying to figure out who he is. One staff member shouted, "Mr. Bloomberg is in the building!!" While another one came up to dap him up saying "It's big bro!" He responded with a disarming smile, slapping his hand away and going for the hug while saying "Nah you know you're my big homie!!" I got a little shy during all this commotion so went to the bar and started with an espresso martini to wake me up and get me out of my shell a little bit. We were then seated at the best table in the joint. The bread to start off was immaculate, I probably had 4 pieces. I love bread. My only complaint was the butter was ice cold. Me and my homie were inspired and began to discuss making a heated butter knife and selling it to steakhouses. I mean there is a major gap in the market for this. Sit back and visualize how optimal a lukewarm butter knife would be to spread your butter perfectly all over every corner of the bread. I can see millions. We all got the porter house steak medium rare (obviously), and it was absolutely to die for. The best steak I have had in NYC if I'm being really honest, and I can only speak the truth.
