I visit NYC every year and this is a mandatory visit every time without fail. I usually take my family with me and I think they enjoy my visits just because they also love the restaurant. I live in a state that has plenty of great steakhouses but Gallaghers is still our favorite. read more

We had dinner at Gallaghers before attending a Broadway show and really enjoyed it. The atmosphere is quintessential old-school New York steakhouse, and they execute it extremely well. White tablecloths, classic decor, and excellent service. The highlight for me was easily the prime rib. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare, incredibly tender, and seasoned really well. Most importantly, it had great flavor throughout, which isn't always the case with prime rib. If you're looking for that classic NYC steakhouse experience and an incredible prime rib, I'd have absolutely no hesitation recommending Gallaghers. read more

Came in here with high expectations and they were met! I highly encourage a reservation to be made, as they had a waitlist for walk-ins and the restaurant seemed super busy. Once we were sat, they gave us an overview of the menu, the highlights, and specials that weren't on the menu including Tomahawk steak, rock shrimp appetizer, side of corn and more. We opted for the 1/2 dozen oysters, Porterhouse for 2, and a side of spinach and roasted corn. Everything was exceptional and a good portion for 2 people. For dessert, we ordered their special, Tiramisu, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Since we were celebrating a special occasion, they gave us a lava cake on the house which made our night even more special. Came here for lunch yesterday with a last minute reservation made on the website. We were seated promptly and given menus right away. The place is beautiful, I love the ambiance and I love being able to see the cuts of meat from the window outside. I opted for the filet mignon from the lunch special menu, medium, while my fiancé got a NY sirloin, medium rare. However, we got a very bloody red filet mignon and a pinkish sirloin. Iykyk. The food was good and other than that mistake, I have nothing to say about it, delicious drinks, too. One of the best dirty martinis found in the city. HOWEVER. We had to change our reservation to an hour later the same day and they were very accommodating. When we walked int the hostess greeted us warmly and took us to our table. Our server quickly took our orders and kindly recommended a wine to go with our meal. We ordered creamed spinach, roasted Brussels sprouts, and mashed potatoes for our sides. The creamed spinach was good and the potatoes were all right but the brussel sprouts were absolutely delicious! They had a nice char without being burnt and the honey glaze was flavorful and not overly sweet. For our main we of course got New York sirloin and it was cooked to perfection. For dessert I got the key lime pie and as a native Floridian it left much to be desired. It was strangely very spice forward and the cream topping I could have done with out. Gallaghers is known to be most reasonably priced steakhouse in the world. It's a classic nice restaurant with old black and white photos of famous people. You can even see their stock of meat behind the glass as you walk in. The sides and soup could be better. Steak is not bad. It's kind of like a fine dining experience where they take a small butter knife looking tool to scrape off your crumbs. No need to dress fancy. First time in New York, I wanted to take my mom to a special dinner before going to the theater, this was an amazing experience for the both of us! From the sidewalk, the dry aging room pulls you in, it is really a sight to see. We walked in and were immediately greeted by the host and taken to our table. John, one of our servers came and delivered water and our menus. The other waiter who served us (so sorry I forgot his name) was just as polite and delivered the bread basket. I don't believe that there is or could ever be a "perfect" steak. That being said, tonight I may have had the closest thing to a perfect stake. I first thought, "this is really good". Then it got more delicious the more I ate. But the "pièce de résistance" occurred when my daughter, who doesn't like steak tasted a bite a said, "I never knew steak could taste like that ". The crab cake and stuffed shrimp were very good also but not quite as good as the steak. Had an exceptional experience at Gallagher's. Got lucky with a roomy spot at the bar and enjoyed a full dinner. I started with the Gorgonzola salad which was simple but perfect. Great vinaigrette dressing with healthy chunks of cheese. For the main intent with their signature Rib Steak and would say it is up there with the greats in the city. Perfectly cooked to medium rare with lots of earthy notes. I closed with the tiramisu which was large and tasty. This place definitely wowed me. Open for 99 years, I'm impressed that the quality of the food and service hasn't deteriorated over time. I ordered the $34 lunch special with a Wedge Salad, Medium rare filet mignon, and Sorbet (Raspberry and Lemon). This special is honestly a steal. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection and was full of juicy flavor. The mushrooms it came with were also a hit for me. They weren't mushy, and actually provided an excellent texture comparison to the steak. I was also pleasantly surprised by the sorbet. The raspberry and lemon combo ended the meal on a slightly acidic note, which was excellent given that the meat was extremely rich. Also, I really need to call out the excellent service. Valentine's dinner well done (or shall I say medium rare?)! We were seated promptly after coat check and started off with two delicious cocktails-- Sidecar and Ziegfeld Follies. For starters, we got the steak tartare and tuna poke. For main, we shared a porterhouse for two with a side of mac n cheese, followed by a decadent cheesecake. Steak tartare 4/5: creamy texture, smooth and paired with lightly toasted bread. I enjoyed each bite, savoring the hints of mustard and pickle. If you're a savory fan, you'll enjoy this. Spicy tuna poke 3/5: besides the wonton chips being delicious, the poke itself was ok. It was bland in flavor compared to the poke I usually eat on the west coast and found that the radish chunks were too big. The quality was fresh but I'd skip this next time. Porterhouse 5/5: we got a mixed cut of medium rare ribeye and filet mignon, which was such a splendid eat. The steak was cooked to perfection and came out on a hot plate. Came here for my kid's birthday, his 1st time in NYC and he would like to try steak for his bday. So I took him here since it's closer to the Broadway area cause we have a show to catch afterward. This place is a legendary and definitely a landmarks. You can see the aging meats from the sidewalk outside and upon walking it, a whole glass refrig full of displaces all type of meats, just make you want to taste every single of its. Staff are wonderful and very elegant plus very helpful high standards for this institution place. The place is old fashioned style but cozy and elegant vibe. I had an amazing experience at Gallaghers last night! They truly live up to their name as the best steak in NYC. We ordered crab cakes as the starter appetizer and it was delicious. The filling was light and airy and I believe they used real crab for the filling! For the main course we tried the porterhouse and prime rib. I personally preferred the porterhouse more, especially the sirloin. The meat was juicy and tender and I have to say it was one of the best steak I have had. Food: My niece and I went to Gallagher's for lunch during the height of the NYC holiday season. Every table was booked so be sure to RSVP in advance! We both loved our $39 three course lunch meal: filet mignon, fingerling potatoes, in a mushroom in wine sauce. Plus Brussels sprouts to share. We both had the cesaer salad appetizer. I finished with the creamiest cheesecake ever and she had the creamiest/richest ice cream! The food was excellent and well priced. The most important thing, however, is that you definitely try the dense brown bread that is served before your meal. It is a date, walnut bread that will knock your socks off! Service: This first thing I noted was that our hostess pulled out our table when she brought us over. This was such a nice touch so you don't have to worry about squeezing in sideways while others are seated beside you. I also noted that my custom Gallagher's steak knife was warm. That was neat! We were tag teamed by two waiters. Harry was our main waiter and he was quite friendly and attentive, also doling out sightseeing recommendations. Our food was well timed and without delay. Gallagher's knows how to handle a full house. Ambience: Music was playing in the background and it wasn't too loud. I wish we had time peruse the old time pictures on the walls of famous actors and the like. We overheard a conversation at the table next to us and actors like George Clooney on Broadway frequent Gallagher's. And recently the three actors from the play, Art, were in: James Corden, Neil Patrick Harris, and Bobby Cannavale. So prepare to be star struck! read more

I had dinner at Gallaghers last weekend before a show. Gallaghers is a classic, and now I know why. Gallaghers was opened by a Ziegfield dancer (Helen Gallagher) and a partner in 1927 as a speakeasy and steakhouse. I'm sure a lot has changed at Gallaghers in that almost 100 years, but it stills retains so much history and charm. The menu is classic, and I had a very hard time choosing what to order (the downside of a solo meal - you can't try as much). I ended up ordering their jumbo shrimp cocktail, the beefsteak tomato and onion salad, and their bone-in New York sirloin sliced. Everything was delicious. (One note: I like onion a sort of absurd amount. You know people who just can't abide raw onion? I'm not one of those people. While I love the idea, I'm not sure I get their tomato and onion salad. The two slices of white onion were a half-inch thick - just entirely too much raw onion to the amount of tomato. Even for this girl. Is it meant to be a salad? They bring it with dressing! Or are you supposed to eat it as a side with the steak? But it's not listed with the sides? I don't know. But it was the one bite that made me go "huh?" I didn't hate it, but I don't get it either.) I also had a martini, which went great with my meal. The service is just the best. It's a classy place (white tablecloths, uniformed servers), but the service lives up to the class of the place. It had been a while since I went to a steakhouse before going to Gallagher's, and honestly it kinda reinforced what I thought. Perhaps it is hubris, but I feel like grilling a steak at home (reverse sear) is going to yield similar results to a steakhouse if you invest in the quality of the meat - probably because a $75 steak at a steakhouse is probably only $25? of actual steak, while cooking a $75 steak at home means you can get a much better cut. We ordered a filet mignon and a dry aged New York sirloin. I ordered my New York sirloin medium rare, but it came out pretty much medium well. It was a thick cut and wasn't cooked super evenly, so some bites came out very chewy, and the middle was medium at best. It feels like the steak was overcooked and too chewy, and some of the fat wasn't properly rendered. Also, the dry aged taste was too overpowering - I've had dry aged steaks before but this was on the stronger side of the nuttiness. Overall I came away thinking that I could really have cooked a better steak. The filet mignon was solid, but overall not super impressed by the spot. It probably didn't help that service was rushed and our seats were cramped. We had to move our tables any time our neighbors wanted to get out of their seats, and vice versa. Probably wouldn't come back, don't think it's worth it. read more

I think Gallagher's is overlooked when it comes to rating the top steakhouses in NYC. I've eaten at Peter Luger, The Palm, Sparks, Keens, Smith & Wollensky, Wolfgang's, Morton's, David Burke Tavern, Hawksmoor NYC, Charlie Palmer Steakhouse (Las Vegas-closed) and the late Tuscany Steakhouse. Gallagher's is equal to any of them (and better than some), in my opinion. There are a good number of new steakhouses that I have yet to try, for example, Cote, 4 Charles Prime Rib, Porter House and La Tete D'Or. Whether any of these can dethrone Gallagher's in my estimation remains to be seen. For now, though, I will recommend you to their generous jumbo lump crabmeat cocktail and one pound lobster cocktail both of which are only $28. The filet mignon and prime rib are super beefy and delicious. Their French fries are also excellent. read more
