Just had a great meal with a friend at Altair. We did the pre theater prix fixe menu ($55 each). This consisted of the following shared items: A huge pull-apart dinner roll with delicious lemon butter A black lentil salad with some kind of small heirloom carrots and a fabulous orange vinaigrette A garden greens salad with Roquefort cheese, lardons, and a little orange fruit that looked like cherry tomatoes and tasted like heaven. Artichoke Tempura with bearnaise sauce - perfectly cooked and I thought they were tasty even though I don't really like fried things very much. We were already full when our entrees arrived but we valiantly did our best. Sea bass with fine herbs and a verjus beurre blanc and salsa verde was good. We Loved the fresh herbs and the fish was perfectly cooked. If there was a less stellar than the others dish, it was the ricotta gnocchi with Aleppo pepper, honey nut squash and pecorino sardo. This dish was merely fine, not outstanding. It did improve when we asked for salt. Dessert for me was a fudge delicious brownie with Carmel sauce, whipped cream, and cocoa nibs that was out of this world. My friend is unable to eat chocolate so they relaxed their strict no substitutions policy for the prix fixe menu and gave her the fruit tart. The pastry was super delicate and all the parts worked well together. The waitstaff was friendly and understanding and did not rush us. The room was full of light and greenery and very welcoming and the noise level was very low. We wanted to take some food home because it was just too much for us to eat and they gave us a claim check for it and kept it in their fridge until we were ready to go so we didn't have to find a place to put it on our table. There's an ama menu based on the elements. Some plates are small and some are regular. The restaurant is inside a hotel. Had a nice enclosed area with windows above. I accidentally made the reservation for the bar, but when we showed up, they were able to accommodate us right away instead of in the normal dining room room. Our server Alex was absolutely a gem! He was so kind and patient given we were his last table of the night and he probably wanted to go home early, but he never once let us feel that way. We just live in Las Vegas so we definitely know when it comes to hospitality. We started with the hamachi and the gnocchi and oh my goodness give me two orders of it!! Very cute see and modern inside. The best part of the food was that it all came out hot!! We also got the seabass and the hanger steak. Let me tell you this place did not disappoint. We stopped in for a nightcap at The Bar Room at Altair, and it was a great way to end the evening. The space is beautiful, with cozy couch seating as well as traditional bar seating. They play really good music, and the overall vibe is relaxed and chill--perfect for winding down after a long day. We sat at the bar, and the bartenders were excellent. Jousten (I may be misspelling his name) helped my niece select the Guava cocktail, and she loved it. I took a sip, and it was exactly as he described--balanced and refreshing. Just a heads-up: the bar closes at 11 pm, and it appeared the kitchen shuts down about 1-2 hours before closing. Overall, this is definitely a great stop if you're in the area or staying at the Arlo Midtown--beautiful setting, good music, and attentive bartenders. read more

Bit of a belated post for their Thanksgiving dinner prix fixe - Altair is the restaurant of the Arlo hotel, and it's a gorgeous space - we were seated in the atrium area and it had great ambiance. Totally understand that Thanksgiving was a busy night, but we started off by being seated 1 full hour after our reservation time (apparently some of the earlier tables were dragging on). It was a bit frustrating as each group checking in was only told to wait to the side because "they wanted to check if the table was ready" - this resulted in all the groups getting antsy and checking with the front desk multiple times because of the lack of transparency. To their credit, the service was all super nice, and after the first course was served, everything moved at a good pace. However, for a 6:45pm reservation, we got seated at 7:45pm, and the first food didn't come until 8:15pm. There was a generous amount of food - anything Thanksgiving we could think of was served up. It did slightly feel as though quantity may have been prioritized over quality, as the dishes didn't seem super connected and our turkey was a bit dry. Overall, I'd have given it 4 stars (would consider coming back if in the area), but I personally took one off due to the long wait. Was looking for a place near our Broadway show that catered to Gluten-Free and Vegetarians. Boy, did this place hit the mark! We did the pre-theater menu and OMG everything was so good. The ambiance was lovely and the waitstaff amazing. The starters were a bit hard for my friend as both options were not gluten free so they brought out grilled artichokes instead of the tempura artichokes. The pumpkin bread with softened butter drizzled in butter was sublime. The grilled artichoke so good. I have no idea what the sauce was that came with it but it was super delicious. My friend likes spicy food so they ordered the hanger steak and I got the mushroom ravioli. It was so good. I was getting pretty full at this point and couldn't eat it all. For dessert we had the gluten free brownies which were amazing. Overall a 10/10 experience all around. read more

Staying at the hotel for a weekend trip to NY. Needed to grab lunch/snacks before going to a dinner/show later - had heard great things about this restaurant from other hotel guests. We loved it! The ambiance is warm, classy, chic and casual. We were seated in a booth which was super comfortable and enabled us to have a relaxing meal. Service was fantastic. From the host/hostess to our server, they were friendly, attentive, responsive, and spot on in terms of recommendations on the menu. We had the Delicata Squash, Hamachi crudo, pumpkin rolls and fries. Everything was fabulous! Beautifully presented and delicious. The squash was a generous portion as was the crudo. The rolls and accompanying butter were fabulous and the fries with harissa ketchup were crispy perfection. What a gem! This space is easy to miss if you don't know it's there but is so gorgeous inside you'll remember your visit. I was able to grab dinner here and loved the selection of cocktails as well. The salmon was astonishing. My guest and I had to agree to share because we both loved it. I ordered one of their Eucalyptus mocktail options which came topped with a delicious foam which was tart sweet and floral. We ordered the duck as well, Spring vegetables on a bed of lentils and the ravioli which was earthy. Really liked the ambiance, we were seated in the greenhouse in a corner with a comfortable couch for 3 out of 5 of us to relax on. Our waitress was very nice. Portions were way too small though...the $34 mushroom ravioli had maybe 5 quarter sized, a few mushrooms and a bunch of decorative fill the plate with fluff. The 3 guys ordered the hanger steak and the portion was just tiny. They had two sides that they shared between them but all were left wanting. Pumpkin dinner rolls were very good. Bathrooms were weird; it's unisex so there are separate stalls but you wash hands and touch up in the mirror with fellas walking about so not my idea of optimal. Pretty pricey and following a trend I've seen in NYC lately where one person asks for sparkling and then a big bottle is brought out, others glasses are auto filled, another bottle is brought out and soon you're adding to that bill with more bottled water than you could possibly need or want. Only one of us requested sparking, the rest were a-okay with still. No one rushed us out which was appreciated as well being that we were catching up with family from overseas. read more

A group of four of us went to Altair for pre-theater dinner in December. Food - very good, creative and tasty dishes, nice portions. Loved the pumpkin dinner roll. Service - generally very cordial, but felt we were being pressured to order alcoholic drinks. One person ordered wine. Two of us do not drink, and despite our politely saying more than once that we did not want drinks, the waiter repeatedly tried to cajole us into ordering drinks. And as noted by another reviewer, one person ordered sparkling water, the rest wanted still/tap, but all glasses were frequently topped up with the bottled water and a second large bottle was brought out immediately without being requested. Value - the pre- theater menu was a very good value. Considering going back to try the brunch, regular dinner menu, but was definitely put off by the seeming pressure to order drinks. read more

We went to Altair on a Monday at 5:30pm. The entrance was weird and the restaurant itself was a bit hard to find. When we first sat down there weren't too many people but it did fill up pretty quickly. Our server was terrible and kept forgetting the wine that we ordered but we pulled in another server who was able to help us and was very friendly. We ordered the foie gras which was excellent, the beef tartare was just ok, on the salty side, and the tempura asparagus which was very bland. For my main course, I got the salmon which was cooked well but was VERY salty. I couldn't finish it. We also took a look at the dessert menu and was not impressed with the selection. We booked at the restaurant for a company's night out. This place is right at the lobby of a hotel. The restaurant was bright and had very nice decorations. We originally came here for the happy hour but the happy hour is at the bar which is separate from the restaurant. We moved to the bar for the happy hour and got a few drinks, pizza and fries. There's not much selections for happy hour. We then decided to stay for dinner and we moved back to the restaurant. The staff was very accommodating. We were a party of 10 and they were able to make room for us at the bar and were able to give our table back when we decided to stay for dinner. Food was pretty good. Cocktail - was okay. It was kinda watered down Bread - amazing. Soft and delicious with the butter. Steak - a little on the chewy side but it was still good. (I like it medium rare) Octopus - nice and tender but it was really salty Sea bass - it was light and crispy. Had great flavors but the fish was very thin and was not very filling. Been meaning to try this place for a while when I saw pics of the Chestnut Agnolotti, but they took it off the menu, sadly. Everything was fine, but nothing blew me away. The ricotta gnocchi was good, but I was expecting it to be a bit softer and chewier. The hanger steak was pretty good. The octopus was cooked really well, super tender, but a bit small for the price. I really like my cocktail named Guava - just the right amount of sweetness. My friend didn't like the Eucalyptus & Yuzu, said it was too sour. My biggest gripe is that their menu, while whimsical, was confusing, which defeats the purpose of a menu! Could not tell appetizers from entrees by how it was structured. Was everything meant to be shared? We don't know. Service was attentive! 5 is perfection and very few restaurants deserve a "5", however Altair is one of the few that I put in that class. My wife and I happened to be in the area and found this gem quite by accident. Our server Rufiina, amazed us with her professionalism and knowledge about the menu. We began with a salad which we shared and was absolutely delicious. My wife had the lemon pappardelle and I had the salmon. Everything was cooked to perfection. Loved the lightly crisp skin on the salmon. Dinner was finished off with cappuccinos. I liked what I think is called "The Bar Room" -the bar of Altair restaurant at Arlo Midtown and the staff. I hated the customers. I met a colleague at this bar and I found us seats at the bar until she arrived. It's a good thing I claimed her spot because it began to get crowded. While I waited I chatted with our bartender and he helped me find a non-alcoholic drink that I could order when she arrived. We talked for about an hour and then she headed out for dinner. I sat enjoying the rest of my drink and as I was contemplating whether I wanted to eat there for dinner, one of the other (bro-ish) customers who was in a group asked if now that I'd acquiesed her seat, if I could move over to it so that he and his buddies could all sit together. I considered it but, then remembered how rude they'd been to the bartenders during their time there and also now this request, and I told them I'd rather stay in my seat and they could have it as well when I left. After that I paid my bill and left and went to enjoy dinner in peace. I felt bad for the bartender and barback because I'm sure that was just the start of their night with I-bankers or tech bros who were drinking in excess and being obnoxious. I am not a fan of restaurants in a hotel, they tend to be catering to convenience rather than the food. THIS is an exception. Altair was a pleasant surprise in the ambiance and the food. The options were well balanced and I want to go back for seconds of the roasted corn ravioli. The cocktails were excellent as was the fresh bread with the whipped butter and honeycomb. Oh my. We ordered the pork chop and the hanger steak with a side of smashed potatoes. All three were delicious and we ran out of room before we ran out of food. Well sized portions. this is inside the Arlo hotel. I came here for dinner and the menu while limited is very well presented and very well put together. Also, the wait staff is really friendly and helpful. I wasn't too sure about which wine I wanted but they came with a few options for me so I could try the portfolio and see which one I liked. I was seated immediately, but I did also have a reservation. We came on a Friday night and they were not too many people at 7 PM. there's some pretty greenery on top with flowers and lights so the space looks like a little indoor garden. It would be a cute place to bring a date for sure. We tried the chestnut agnolotti with brown butter and I highly recommend this dish, we also tried the Tokyo turnips which were well done, but not super great, I got the seared bass and my friend got the spring chicken. While the options are more limited everything was delicious and presented gorgeously. It may be silly and although everything was incredible, the pumpkin bread is the beginning was the highlight. The service was incredibly fast to where we weren't even able to finish the current course before the next one was ready. It was also beautiful in there and had a great ambiance overall. Loved the space! So beautiful. Came with a group and would think the space has to be better in an intimate setting of 2-4. Service was great and for the life of I can't recall the gentleman who helped out table, I don't want to jack it up. Overall the food was amazing, that lamb shoulder had no chance and was cooked so well. Drinks were good too, had a video of one with cotton candy that they pour over.
