Absolutely wretched host staff and completely rude to my family who's visiting. We just stepped in to literally put our names in the wait list and the woman at the screen blatantly ignored us (coincidentally we are Afro Latin) and proceeded to take care of the white family who entered 5 minutes after us. Mind you, both of us didn't have reservations which is why we wanted to put our name in. She then was rude to my mother (we were explaining that we were patiently waiting to put our names in, to which she started getting reactive). The manager(?) or Host Lead (?) (she had a green shirt) next to her, who had absolutely no idea of the situation DEFENDED the host and maliciously told me that we aren't going get seated after I was trying to explain the situation. Both were hateful and had atrocious hospitality behaviour I've ever seen in midtown. This was micro aggression at its finest and I will NEVER suggest Friedman's on 47th with that kind of energy. We simply entered the door and were faced with jaded restaurant employees. As a former restaurant worker of almost two decades this Friedman's should be ashamed and embarrassed. Do NOT eat here folks. Avoid like the plague for Saturday Brunch, especially my BIPOC folks. A quick walk over and we were seated immediately on a Saturday morning. Highlights: decor is lovely and welcoming. Staff is quick and uber friendly, answering menu questions with no fuss. If you're a celiac like me - Friedmans has you covered with plentiful GF options. Mimosas are $10 all day. Coffee is dark and strong. BUT THE FOOD. I was craving something healthy, and the Sesame salmon salad did not disappoint. Bright, flavorful, gluten free, fresh and filling. I happily devoured my plate and made mental notes to recreate this salad back home in CA. My husband enjoyed his Shakshuka and said it was very similar to his Greek mother's creation when he was a child. I came earlier than my friend and they let me sit at the bar to wait, which was really nice. I ordered the mango pineapple nonalcoholic drink and it was super sweet. My friend came and we got seated at a table immediately. We had the gluten free pot stickers and chicken fingers for appetizers and they were both crunchy and tasty. I got the fried chicken dinner with sweet potato fries and Brussel sprouts as my sides. I'd skip both of these next time, I didnt even finish them. A++ experience. After a nice stroll on the Hi-line, we landed on brunch at Friedman. No reservation and we were seated quickly (11:30am). I can understand the need for a lunch reservation as this place filled up fast. Great menu and lunch specials, soup/ 1-2 sandwich or salad/ 1-2 sandwich. Also based on yelp reviews, the lemon Ricotta pancakes sounded great. We kept it simple, I had the Matzah Ball soup and 1/2 pastrami sandwich, my wife had the Lemon Ricotta Pandcakes. Both home runs! Soup was perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of dill and the matzah balls were soft and flavorful, 1/2 Pastrami on rye was the perfect taste and they did not skimp. Don't always believe Yelp reviews--especially coming from a Yelp Elite--so let's set the record straight! First off, just a quick note for anyone looking: this restaurant is not halal. Aside from that, we had a fantastic experience here at Friedmans Herald Square near Penn Station. They were playing Hilary Duff music, which was such a fun touch since they often match the vibe of whatever is happening at MSG! They even had special Hilary Duff mocktails. The atmosphere is super sweet and cozy. The restaurant was empty when we first walked in, but the second we sat down, it completely packed up! The waiter was very friendly, and even though they weren't able to split the check at the table, they did provide an itemized receipt to make figuring it out easy. Had reservations for 2 on a Saturday afternoon and the place was packed. We got there about three minutes late, but they seated us within 5 minutes in a booth. It was our first time eating at a Friedman's location. It had a nice diner feel to it, with a mix of booths and tables. The brunch menu has a variety of breakfast items, salads, sandwiches and burgers, starters, and entrees (fish tacos, grain bowl, fried chicken). I like that several of the items are naturally gluten free, and some can be made gluten free by request. We decided to go with three breakfast items from the brunch menu: I got the shakshuka, my sister got the Nova Benny, and we got the lemon ricotta pancakes to share. All 3 dishes were great. The shashuka came with grilled ciabatta, perfect for dipping into the sunny side eggs and tomato sauce. My sister loved that the poached eggs and smoked salmon of the Nova Benny came on top of a crispy potato latke. The pancakes were fluffy and the lemon ricotta and lemon zest elevated their flavor. Our server was friendly and attentive, and he asked us if we had any allergies when he took our order. He came by several times to check on us and refill water. Friedman is an absolute must-visit if you are looking for an incredible burger in NYC. I honestly did not expect to be this impressed, but this ended up being one of the best burgers I have ever had -- and quite possibly the best burger of my life. I ordered the burger with cheese, and everything about it was perfect. The burger itself was THICK, incredibly juicy, and cooked beautifully. You could immediately tell that the meat was high quality, and knowing that they use Creekstone beef made it even better. The flavor was rich and beefy without being overwhelming, and every bite was incredibly satisfying. The patty had that perfect combination of a beautifully cooked exterior while still being extremely juicy and tender inside. And the bread deserves its own paragraph! The brioche-style bun was excellent. It was soft, slightly buttery, and substantial enough to hold the thick patty without falling apart or becoming soggy. It complemented the burger perfectly rather than taking away from the meat. The combination of the juicy Creekstone beef, melted cheese, and that excellent brioche-style bread was honestly phenomenal. What really stood out to me was how substantial the burger was. This wasn't one of those thin burgers where you finish it and immediately feel like you could eat another one. It was thick, hearty, juicy, and incredibly flavorful. Every bite felt like you were getting exactly what you want from a great burger. The fries were also excellent. I really appreciated that they weren't overly fried or greasy. They had a great texture and were crispy without feeling heavy or excessively oily. Sometimes fries can completely overwhelm a meal because they're so fried, but these were much more balanced and paired perfectly with the burger. Overall, Friedman absolutely exceeded my expectations. The burger, especially with the cheese, was outstanding, the Creekstone beef was incredibly flavorful, the brioche-style bun was excellent, and the fries were the perfect accompaniment. If you're in NYC and love burgers, this is a must-go-to. I would absolutely order this burger again and would highly recommend Friedman to anyone looking for a thick, juicy, high-quality burger. I got the pan-seared fish sandwich with gluten free bread. So good. I had trouble figuring out the dipping sauces I liked. They don't have barbecue sauce so I tried the honey mustard and the herbed aioli. So-so but not quite right. (The next day I went to the singing Friedmans at Times Square and tried the garlic aioli. We were able to snag a booth for two on a Saturday at lunch with under a 5 mins wait. The place is super inviting with spacious windows and high ceilings and plants which make it feel airy while the wood made it warm and natural. The booth was comfortable. Our server was outstanding. The chicken was perfectly fried, crispy, moist, and seasoned just right. The waffle had a nice texture: soft with a little crunch. The cheddar was mild and didn't overpower the waffle. Overall, a solid combo. The B.E.L.T. hit the spot. The bread was toasted just right, and the bacon was high quality. I swapped the sunny side up egg for scrambled, and it still worked great. The potato hash was fried nicely, could've used a bit more salt, but nothing a little ketchup couldn't fix. Our server mentioned the $10 mimosas, so of course, we had to try them. They were just ok, with extremely small portions. I also would have preferred other juice options for the mimosa besides orange juice.
