A classic steakhouse that hasn't lost its way. I often go to Wolfgang's when I am in New York and it is still great. In particular, the porterhouse is the best anywhere (definitely over Lugers). It's the steak that defines Wolfgang's and I not only recommend but if you want a different cut there are probably better options. Again it's a unique experience that very few steakhouses pull off. I was also surprised at how good the onion rings and creamed spinach were. The tomatoes and onion was probably the only thing not great, largely as tomatoes are not in season now and you could tell. Even though I am not a big red meat eater, I have been to many steakhouses - mostly because they're a favorite to host educational dinners. Wolfgang's, though, was one that I had never been to before - though one of my friends loves it and has been often. We had just finished having a few drinks and was looking for some dinner when she suggested we go - there were tables available here at the Times Sq location, so off we went. The original Wolfgang's is located on Park Ave in Manhattan, and they have since grown to several locations in the NYC area as well as some outside the US. Times Square is the armpit of NYC and I try to avoid it at all costs, but due to convenience (and table availability) we chose here. To be honest it wasn't that bad because it was a little down 41st so not in the thick of the crowds. The architecture was interesting - it had a really contemporary design with a full glass front that you can look into from the street; it didn't really have a warm presence like I'm used to at other steakhouses, but it wasn't offensive. The menu has typical steakhouse fare with a good selection of apps, steak cuts, non-beef options, and sides. We decided to start with the crab cake which was served with a small salad and a tasty aioli; the crab cake was good and not overly bready - the star was prominent. We also got Caesar salad which was perfectly fine - dressed well and tasty. We decided on the porterhouse for two for our main, and also ordered a side of German potatoes. We got the beef medium rare and it was cooked well - I could tell the beef was high quality and it was so tasty that we didn't need the bottle of steak sauce on the table (I know, I know - good steak doesn't need sauce). The German potatoes were almost hash-brown style with crispy bits scattered amongst the carbs - they were quite good. For dessert we got the hit fudge sundae which is a perfect steakhouse finisher IMO - well, that and cheesecake. Service was good - the wait staff made sure we were taken care of and food came out at a good pace. Overall, I had a great first experience at Wolfgang's - I can see why this is a popular spot and would definitely return - but maybe not in Times Square ;-). read more

The space itself is great. Fairly modern, spacious, and carries that classic steakhouse vibe you'd expect. I was here with friends, and honestly, it should've been a solid experience just based on that setting alone. But the food and service really didn't live up to the name or the price tag. Our server came across more demanding than welcoming, barely said a word beyond the basics and gave zero follow-up once our food hit the table. It was almost like we were bothering them by being there. Things got noticeably colder the moment we said we weren't ordering alcohol, just still water. That kind of energy is hard to ignore. We had the Wolfgang's Salad and Crab Cake, and not a word of explanation was given about how either would be served. Not that it's a huge deal, but for a place of this caliber, you'd expect at least a little guidance. The steak was another story. We ordered medium-rare, and what came out was more like well on one side and medium on the other. Based on other reviews, seems like if you want actual medium-rare here, you'd have to order it medium. I honestly had to laugh. I know this spot has a big name and reputation, but based on what we had, my friends said they've had better at Empire, and they had one only two days prior. The service was immaculate and I felt that the waiters tending to my table were extremely nice and consistently checked my table throughout the night to make sure we were ok. The food was very good. Got the crew back together for our quarterly dinner catch up session and chose to try out Wolfgang's. Situated in the iconic NY Times building, the restaurant sits in a sub-basement like space where pedestrians would be able to look in and get a pretty good visual of the dining room. The entrance, however, isn't grand. Comprised of 3 aluminum framed glass doors that lead into a small foyer which grants access to a flight of steps. We were graciously greeted by a young lady who escorted us to a table for 4 not too far away from their main entrance. Soon after we were handed menus and our meal promptly followed. Shared a portion of their think cut bacon, porterhouse for three accompanied by German potatoes and creamed spinach. We feel that sharing a piece of their bacon as a prelude to the main course was definitely the way to go... saving our appetite. The steak was marvelously tender. Tasted just right, not too salty and most importantly... the crust was not charred. Very good. The spinach was a bit on the runny side for my taste and the German potatoes were simply what we call home fries in NYC (should have gone w/ mashed). The space does not feel lavishly decorated, it is a bit on the noisy side, but adequately illuminated. The tuna tartare was good but how can you really screw up raw tuna?!? The tomato and avocado slices were a nice touch. I'm was expecting more for the lobster bisque but much too soupy without the creaminess and thickness one should expect from a quality bisque. The few fresh pieces of lobster were nice but not night to redeem the meal. Service was good but the atmosphere was loud and mainly from older clientele who seemed to be hard of hearing since everyone wanted to talk loud. We had very high expectations as Wolfgang is one of New York's well-known steakhouses, but our Christmas dinner turned out to be deeply disappointing. First, although we had a 6:15 PM reservation, we were seated 20-30 minutes late. Given that it was Christmas, we could understand the delay. However, after placing our order, it took ONE FULL HOUR for our steaks to arrive. We clearly ordered before the tables next to us--and even the table behind us--and we saw our server submit the order, yet all of those tables received their steaks far earlier than we did. Throughout this time, no server paid any attention to whether our food was coming out. There was not even a single server we could ask; they all rushed past, too busy to acknowledge us. The most unbelievable part was what happened afterward. When we asked for the check, the server asked BEFORE running our card, "Do you want to tip 20% or 25%?" We were confused and asked again, but received the same question, and awkwardly answered 20%. We assumed this meant the tip would be included upfront (which in itself is unreasonable and feels like forced tipping). However, when we received the receipt, it showed the usual 18%, 20%, and 25% options--and the server had already PRE-CHECKED 20% on our behalf. An 18% option clearly existed, yet it was presented as if it did not. I was shocked. There is no restaurant where staff decide and mark their own tip amount. This behavior is unacceptable and unjustifiable. The food itself was also mediocre at best. For this price, I strongly recommend spending your money elsewhere where the service is far better. read more

I could usually excuse the fat content if the center was good and this wasnt the case, i cut into an area of silverskin that made the next bites awful. So i sent the plate back and opted for a filet as i didnt want to have a second bad experience. Well that happened anyway. The filet came out about five minutes later and the outside had a great char. But after a few bites on the edges, it was obvious the steak was cooked less than ordered. The middle not only was rare, but it waa cold. Sent that back Waitstaff was attentive and good. Ambiance was nice. Doubtful that i will return as there are so many other options in nyc read more

Honestly, not sure how to rate this. I feel like this place is on par with most huge steakhouses in NYC, and I should give an objective rating based on that, but something about it was not as satisfying. A lot of the dishes we ordered were just good, not great. The oysters and shrimp were solid - nothing to complain about, and the wedge salad was pretty good with the blue cheese dressing (though the presentation just looks like a deconstructed burger without the buns and patty). The porterhouse was pretty soft and tender and had good flavor, but since our party was large, we ordered a Porterhouse for 10. So the staff tried squeezing as much of the steaks into 3 plates, which didn't leave a lot of room for additional grease and juices to marinate with the steaks. A lot of the sides that I typically enjoy with steak (asparagus and Brussels sprouts) were a little soggy rather than crispy, and I struggled to find much lobster in the lobster Mac and cheese. That said, with how many guests that can fit in there, it can get quite loud. Service was great. Our waiter was super nice and patient. We had some people with dietary restrictions that he was accommodating for. I ordered a mezcal old fashioned to start with. P Pretty solid! Smoky, a hint of sweetness, with a background citrus note. After that I had a ribeye that I ordered medium with a side of asparagus. The asparagus was grilled and cooked decently. There was still some bite to it and it wasn't some sad mush. Service was cold but I feel like that is how most of the older NYC steakhouses are (especially if they have Luger's lineage). We started off with bacon, oysters, shrimp, crab cakes and tuna tartar. All were good but the best part for me was the extra horseradish on the side. I piled it into my cocktail sauce and onto my oysters. For dinner I shared a porterhouse with a few friends. Located in Times Square vicinity, this is the closest decent steakhouse to Dave & Buster, and Port Authority Bus Terminal. They stay open till 11pm, so convenient for a late dinner, then take bus back to NJ. Even on busy weekend nights, chances are you will get a table. Being in Midtown, they have a short but very expensive menu. There are few individual steak dishes, but they also provide combo, that comes with mix of different type of meat. Their sea bass and lamb chops are pretty good too. We were little disappointed with the side dishes of Asparagus and Brussel Sprouts. Those lacked flavor, seemed it was just booked in salt water. We had a good service. Our server suggested us an excellent wine that complements the steak entree. The food came out with a manageable wait time. They also made a special side dish for the 4 year old at our table. The sea-bass was as smooth as butter and cooked to perfection. The salmon was fresh. The lobster Mac was disappointing, $40 for little pieces of lobster sprinkled on top does not constitute as "lobster Mac and cheese", save your money. The salads were lovely. They carry my favorite sparkling water... Saratoga. The restrooms are clean and modern. Typical white cloth restaurant that is significantly over priced. A quintessential NYC steakhouse. Visited with coworkers after having not been to this location in years. I forgot how nice this location is, with high ceilings, floor to ceiling windows, and a little back garden. We ordered cocktails first; old fashioneds, dirty martinis and a negroni to start. The negroni was a bit heavy on the sweet red vermouth but still enjoyable. For food, we started with the shrimp cocktail and thick cut bacon. The shrimp cocktail had an excellent seasoning to it and was a nice, chilled temperature. One of the slices of bacon was a little bit tough but the other was perfectly tender. For entrees, we got the porterhouse and ribeye both medium rare. The porterhouse was probably my favorite of the two, but both cuts were extremely tender and juicy. Sides included mac and cheese, sauteed broccoli, mushrooms, and creamed spinach. The mac and cheese had a hint of truffle in it which made for a very savory side. The creamed spinach tasted like my mother makes it, heavy on the spinach light on the cream, not overpowering but still flavorful. The mushrooms and broccoli were okay, nothing special, a bit of mush with salt/pepper on it. We mainly ordered them to put something else green on the plate. For dessert, we shared a baked apple crisp and a New York cheesecake, both exceptional. My preference was for the cheesecake having had too many apple pies/crisps in the last few weeks from Thanksgiving. Overall, we were not disappointed. Service and food were both exceptional.
